2018-2019 Room
Selection Guidelines
I. Overview
The information contained in the Guidelines on the 2018-2019 Room Selection Process
will provide direction and answer almost all questions related to the process. The Room
Selection Process has been designed to give returning students the opportunity to make
some choices about their 2018-2019 room type, roommate(s), and residence hall while
minimizing time demands. Review this packet thoroughly. If questions exist after
reviewing these Guidelines please feel free to contact the Office of Residence Life.
Section II of these Guidelines provides a timeline of important dates related to the Room
Selection Process. By participating in the Room Selection Process, students have Room
selection eligibility, as discussed in Section III. It is important to carefully review these
eligibility requirements. Perhaps most important for eligibility is submission of the
2018-2019 housing reservation deposit. This non-refundable and non-transferable
deposit must be confirmed as received in the Office of Student Accounts by
Friday, March 23, 2018.
Section IV includes information about residence hall and housing options. This section
includes information on themed learning community floors, quiet floors, gender-inclusive
housing options, suites, conjoined rooms (North and West Halls), and academic year
vacation housing, rooms designated to accommodate students with disabilities, and
considerations for winter varsity athletes.
Section V describes the two ways students can select their 2018-2019 room. Actual
selection will occur online through one of these two room selection options. They are:
1. Single Room Selection – For selection of design single rooms in Horace
Mann, Peirce, Towers and Linsley Halls; OR
2. Open Room Selection – For selection of standard rooms, suites, North and
West Hall conjoined rooms (including singles). Students can select spaces
in available halls and on themed learning community floors.

2018-2019 Room
Selection Guidelines
Room selection policies and procedures and other considerations are discussed in
Section VI. This section explains room selection order, how to pick a room with a
roommate, and information on 2018-2019 room rates, vacation periods, fall opening and
the Residence Hall License Agreement. Students should review and consider these
guidelines which include:
room selection priority order
the ability to choose roommates
the opportunity to reside in a suite with friends
medical considerations
scheduled residence hall changes
Current first-year residents sometimes worry that all rooms will be assigned before it is
their turn to select a room. This should not be a concern. Even after all current students
participate in the Room Selection Process, spaces will remain open and be assigned to
the new Fall 2018 incoming residents. After incoming first-year residents are assigned
housing, any remaining vacancies are assigned to students on the Housing Wait List (on
a space-available basis).

C. Maintaining Eligibility for On-Campus Housing
Applicants may lose eligibility for on-campus housing if they do not:
Remain a matriculated undergraduate student in good academic standing. (Must
not be on academic suspension/dismissal)
Register for undergraduate classes during the scheduled registration period and
by the last day of the previous semester.

Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residence Life. Dropping below a full
course load does not constitute grounds for release from the Residence Hall
License Agreement.
D. Students on Residential Review
Students on Residential Review are allowed to participate in Room Selection, but will not
have their on-campus housing assignment confirmed until after the Residential Review
status is evaluated at the end of the semester.

Residence Life Staff will enter suites to inspect for health, safety, and
compliance to the University’s policies. Suite residents will be notified of any
health and safety concerns and required corrective action.
In accordance with fire safety, the number of people present in a suite at any
given time may not exceed twice the capacity of the suite (e.g. 4-person suites
are limited to a maximum of 8 people present at any given time). Suite

B. Gender-Inclusive Housing Program
Framingham State University supports an inclusive and diverse learning and living
environment. Accordingly, gender-inclusive housing is available to students who wish
to live in a room with another eligible resident without restriction based on their
roommate’s biological sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression.
Depending on the applicant’s interests and needs, Residence Life will consider gender-
inclusive options in all residence halls.
Residence Life is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive experience for all
resident students and offers options for residents who may prefer to live in a gender-
inclusive room assignment.
Restroom configuration is a consideration for some residents when considering gender-
inclusive housing. Please note that all North Hall and West Hall housing options include
shared semi-private bathrooms. Residence Hall community restrooms are designated
(a) “male” by biological sex or gender identity; (b) “female” by biological sex or gender
identity, or (c) are single user/gender neutral bathrooms without gender designation.
Gender neutral bathrooms are available in all halls. Please note, however, not all gender
neutral bathrooms include showers.
Current resident students who are interested in assignment through the Gender-
Inclusive Housing Program should indicate their preference on their housing application
and email Laurie Carr, Residence Life Assignment Coordinator ([email protected])
after they receive their Room Selection Appointment Time. Laurie Carr will work with
applicants to review and select from available gender-inclusive rooms (in seniority order).
Students will not be asked to disclose why they have selected a preference for gender-
inclusive housing.
In the event a vacancy occurs in a gender inclusive room assignment, the remaining
resident will be given an opportunity to pull in another eligible resident if housing
demands allow. During high occupancy periods, either another student requesting
gender inclusive housing will be assigned to the vacancy or the room’s designation will
default to assignment by biological sex.
Couples involved romantically are discouraged from choosing gender inclusive housing.
It is up to the discretion of individual students interested in gender-inclusive housing
whether they wish to discuss this option with their parents.

C. Full Academic Year + Vacation Housing (Thanksgiving, Winter & Spring Breaks)
There is an option for residents to select full academic year housing including the three
academic year vacation periods (Thanksgiving, Winter & Spring Breaks). This option is
available only in Corinne Hall Towers for 2018-2019. Residents selecting this option will
move in for the Fall Term with other students, but may remain in housing during the three
vacation periods (Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break) not covered by
the standard Residence Hall License Agreement. Full Academic Year + Vacation
Housing ends with spring semester final exams and does not extend into the summer.
Students interested in this option must select this option on their 2018-2019 Housing
Application. The cost for Full Academic Year + Vacation Housing (Thanksgiving, Winter &
Spring Breaks) is anticipated to be the standard room rate plus a premium of $1,474^ for
residents assigned to a standard room.
^NOTE: Rates provided are estimated for the 2018-2019 academic year. Actual rates
will be set by, and are subject to approval of, the Framingham State University Board of
Trustees.
Students selecting the Full Academic Year + Vacation Housing (Thanksgiving, Winter &
Spring Breaks) option agree to extend the terms of the Residence Hall License Agreement
through the Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Break vacation periods.
After the Room Selection Process, students may add or cancel this option at any time
through August 1, 2018.
Please note: There is no meal plan during the vacation housing period. Campus dining
services are available on a limited cash basis during some vacation periods.
D. Quiet Floor (Larned Hall)
Students interested in living with others who wish to commit to a quiet floor environment may want to consider the Quiet Floor Option. This floor will be designated on Larned Hall’s 2nd floor. The Quiet Floor is available for individuals willing to commit to an environment with extended quiet hours (8:00 p.m.- 8:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday). A quiet floor contract must be signed if one chooses a room on this floor.

E. Themed Learning Community (LC) Housing Options
Themed learning communities are residence hall neighborhoods organized around
themes residents share with neighbors and are interested in learning more about. Floor
activities and programming will be the result of the involvement of residents of the floor
with guidance and assistance from staff. Please note, in some cases space limitations
may result in some residents being assigned to a floor if spaces remain vacant after
room selection and new student housing assignments.
1. Arts Collective (Corinne Hall Towers) During 2018-2019 the sixth floor in Corinne Hall Towers will be home to the Arts Collective floor. This option is designed for students involved in the performing or visual arts. Floor members are expected to help plan and support floor programming which may include museum trips, viewing parties, award show nights, and other similar events.
2. New England Sports Nation Floor (Larned Hall) The England Sports Nation option will be located on the third floor in Larned Hall and is designed for students who love everything about the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics or Patriots. Floor members are expected to help organize and support floor programming which may include Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox and Patriots viewing parties as well as exploring the role of sports in society and/or sports and business.
3. Civic Engagement Floor (West Hall) A portion of the second floor in West Hall will be home for residents who are interested in participating in service projects, discussion groups and other campus involvement activities. Students registered for designated 2018-2019 civic engagement courses are especially encouraged to consider this themed housing option. Floor members are expected to help organize and support floor programming centered on service & civic engagement activities.
4. Health and Wellness Living Floor (Larned Hall) – NEW! Have interest in health, fitness, diet, exercise, and a lifestyle guided by overall wellness? The fourth floor of Larned Hall has been designated as a new Health and Wellness floor for 2018-2019. Floor members are expected to work closely with staff and help organize and support floor programming.
5. Honors/High Academic Achievement (Corinne Hall Towers) – NEW! The tenth floor in Corinne Hall Towers will be home to the 2018-2019 Honors/Academic High Achievement Floor. This floor is for returning and first year students in the FSU Honors program as well as for those committed to academic high achievement with an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher. Floor members are expected to help plan and support floor programming.

F. North and West Halls Connected Single Rooms
North Hall and West Hall single rooms are connected to a neighboring room and share
bathroom, vanity, and entry vestibule (in the case of West Hall) space. As a result, these
design singles still have important relationship considerations and so are selected during
Open Room Selection. Because students often inquire about which specific rooms are
connected singles they are listed in the following paragraphs.
North Hall (connected to a double room through a shared bathroom): 203A, 208A, 218A,
303A, 403A, 415A, 425B, 503A, 515A, 525B, 603A, 615A, 625B, 703A, 715A, 725B
West Hall (A & B rooms connected through a shared entry and bathroom) : 202A & B,
232A & B, 234A & B, 302A & B, 332A & B, 334A & B, 402A & B, 432A & B, 434A & B,

V. Room Selection Options
A. How Do I Participate in Single Room Selection?
Single Room Selection provides participants1 with the opportunity to select available design
single occupancy rooms in Corinne Hall Towers, Horace Mann, Peirce, or Linsley Halls. A
limited number of double-as-single rooms may also be available during Single Room
Selection. Room Selection appointment timeslots will be scheduled according to seniority-
based priority order (see Section VI for a detailed explanation of Room Selection Priority).
Single room availability is limited so delaying selection beyond the assigned appointment
timeslot may diminish ability to select a single.
Because single occupancy rooms in North and West Halls are attached to other
rooms with shared bathroom and common spaces, these rooms are only open
through Open Room Selection.
To participate in Open Room Selection, eligible participants must complete the online
2018-2019 Housing Application by April 3, 2018 and select “single room preference” on
the application. Applicants will receive a selection appointment date and specific timeslot
for access to selection via student e-mail on April 4, 2018.
If there are more participants than available rooms, applicants not able to select a design
single occupancy room will be able to revisit their housing application and create or join
a roommate group. They will then be given an Open Room Selection appointment date
and timeslot for the Open Room Selection. Applicants not able to select a single room
will be placed on the Single Room Wait List, but must participate in Open Room Selection
to remain on the Single Room Wait List.
Timeslots to access Single Room Selection on the myResLife portal will be scheduled
for April 5 - 6, 2018.
Please pay attention to the timeslot when selection is open, as punctuality is important
given limited room availability!
1 Students with a documented disability requiring a single room accommodation must pay the housing reservation deposit deadline, complete the
housing application, and participate in Single Room Selection. If unable to select a room through Open Room Selection these, students should email
[email protected] by April 27, 2018.

B. How Do I Participate in Open Room Selection?
During Open Room Selection, participants will select from a range of available on-
campus rooms and housing options (see Section V). Room Selection appointment
timeslots will be scheduled according to seniority-based priority order (see Section VI for
a detailed explanation of Room Selection Priority).
In order to participate in this process, applicants must complete the online 2018-2019
Housing Application by April 11, 2018 and, if interested in living with a specific roommate
or roommates, also create or join a roommate group on their applications by that date.
Applicants will receive a selection appointment date and timeslot via student e-mail on
April 13, 2018. During the appointed timeslot, students will log onto the myResLife portal
to select a 2018-2019 room assignment.
Timeslots to access Single Room Selection on the myResLife portal will be scheduled
for April 18-19, 2018.
Please pay attention to the time frames, as punctuality will result in having more room
choices!
1. Creating a Roommate or Suite Group
a. In order to live with a specific person(s) a group must be formed during the
Housing Application: Assign a group leader who will create a roommate
group and password on his/her housing application on myResLife. It is
advantageous to assign the leader based on who would have the highest
seniority (a person with the highest number of completed courses plus
courses attempted – see Section VI below), since selection appointment
timeslots are assigned to a group based on group leader seniority.
b. All members of the group must individually complete their online 2018-
2019 Housing Application on the myResLife portal and join the group.
c. As a group discuss which rooms/suites would best suit the group’s needs
and decide on roommate pairings, if applicable.
d. The group leader will select the room/suite once his/her selection
appointment timeslot opens. The group leader will assign all
roommate pairings to rooms within the selected suite.
e. Group leaders should be sure all of this information has been gathered and
understood by the group well in advance of selection.

Selection Guidelines
Have a contingency/ back-up plans. If the group leader is not able to select the planned
room/suite(s), the group leader should be ready to pursue alternative plans.
Once a room/suite has been selected, members of the group may not participate further
in the Open Room Selection Process.
Additional roommate(s)/suitemates: Throughout Open Room Selection students may
select any open space within a room or suite. Any vacancies that remain after Open
Room Selection will be assigned by the Housing Assignment Coordinator. Therefore, a
resident may want to fill a room/suite unless there are no preferences on additional
occupants.
To accommodate new student assignments, upperclassmen in unfilled rooms/suites may
be re-assigned during the summer to live with other returning students as Residence Life
consolidates rooms/suites.

VI. Additional Room Selection Guidelines
This section provides an overview of additional guidelines related to the Room Selection
Process.
A. Room Selection Priority Order
Room Selection Priority Order plays a role in the Room Selection Process. Residents
wishing to live with a desired roommate for the 2018-2019 academic year will want to
carefully review this information.
In both Single Room and Open Room Selection, the order in which participants select
rooms is determined by a seniority-based lottery system. Seniority is set according to the
number of credit-bearing courses completed, plus those credit-bearing courses currently
in progress. Those students with the highest number of completed plus attempted
courses will be provided appointment time slots earlier than those with a fewer number
of completed plus attempted courses. Appointment time slots are assigned randomly in
cases where multiple students have the same number of completed plus attempted
courses.
Generally, a participant’s choices increase with seniority and improve by selecting at
earlier appointment times. This advantage, however, is only realized if one selects a
room when the selection time slot opens since time slots continue to open on a rolling
basis for other participants beginning several minutes after the time slot opens.
B. Selecting a Room with a Desired Roommate(s)
Individuals who wish to be roommates in double and multiple occupancy rooms should
decide on a name for their Roommate Group and decide upon a leader. Roommates
must be current students eligible to participate in Room Selection.
C. Winter Varsity Athletes
Returning residents who may be members of winter athletic teams should note that
Corinne Hall Towers Hall will be available for winter intersession housing on a limited
basis. Winter varsity athletes who do not select Corinne Hall Towers are not guaranteed

D. Rooms Designated to Accommodate Students With Disabilities
The rooms listed below may be reassigned to students with disabilities, if the need arises.
Persons without disabilities are free to choose these rooms with the understanding that,
should a student with a disability need housing in the future, they may be displaced to
accommodate a student with a disability, and would be reassigned to another room. If
the need for displacement occurs, every effort will be made to maintain the existing
roommate configuration. However, due to space constraints, this cannot be guaranteed.

Selection Guidelines
The agreement does not include residency during the University’s vacation periods
(Thanksgiving, Winter & Spring Breaks) unless a student has selected the Full Academic Year
+ Vacation Housing (Thanksgiving, Winter & Spring Breaks) option. The calendar in the Guide
to Residence Living lists the vacation dates as to when the residence halls are closed.
G. Vacation Periods
All residence halls (with the exception of students who select the Full Academic Year +
Vacation Housing option) close to all residents, including those residents student
teaching or on in internship during Thanksgiving, Winter and/or Spring Breaks. These
periods are not covered by the Residence Hall License Agreement. During vacations,
the University reserves the right to use rooms as it deems necessary. In the event that
the University must utilize this right, the resident must, upon reasonable notice, remove
personal belongings from the room. Vacancies may be assigned at any time without
notice, including vacation periods in Corinne Hall Towers.
Student teachers, interns or others interested in vacation period housing may choose
the Full Academic Year + Vacation Housing option or may make alternative housing
and/or travel arrangements during vacation periods when residence halls are closed.
H. Fall Move-In Day
Move-in Day for returning residents is Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Please plan
accordingly.

VII. Room Selection Process Policies & Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What if I forget to pay my deposit or paid it after Friday, March 23, 2018?
A. If your deposit is not received in the Office of Student Accounts by the deadline,
you will be changed to commuter status. Your deposit will be held as a wait
list deposit and you will be placed on the Housing Wait List, contingent upon
your completion of the 2018-2019 Housing Wait List Application on the
myResLife section of myFramingham. We will do our very best to
accommodate all students who deposit after the deadline. These students will
generally be assigned to housing and do not participate in the Room Selection
Process.
Q. When do I find out my Room Selection Appointment?
A. Room Selection appointment times will be emailed to students FSU email
addresses prior to their selection type and according to the schedule in section
II of these Guidelines.
Q. What if I am late entering my selection choices?
A. You will still be able to select a room while the portal is open.
Q. If I pay my room deposit early, will I get a better room selection appointment
number?
A. No. The date you pay your room deposit has no impact on the appointment
time you receive. Appointment times are random within seniority levels.
Q. If I decide later that I do not want my room or I do not want my selection time, can I give it to someone else?
A. No. Housing assignments and selection times are non-transferable.
Q. When do returning students move in for the Fall 2018 semester?
A. Tuesday, September 4, 2018 is Returning Student Move-in Day. Classes
