Attendance Each day we will begin class with a bellringer/DOL that practices essential ACT skills such as editing and vocabulary, that I will hand out at the door. You will then save these DOLs to staple together and turn in at the end of the week. Please be on time to class to receive a DOL, as after the tardy bell rings, I will not hand out any further DOLs. *You can make up these DOLs by attending FLEX TIME, where you can come in to get your DOL and to read or do missed work. *Please note that if you are absent for an excused absence, you can come and get your DOLs from me. Your absence must be excused in Skyward before picking these up. REMEDIATION If you find that you have fallen behind, done poorly on your work, or simply missed a lot of class, please come and talk to me ! I am here every day after school, and arrangements can be made, so please come and let me know. Best remedy is to plan and prepare. GRADING All class work is broken down into four categories: Daily Work – 40% Papers – 35% Tests/Quizzes – 15% Book Reports/Reading – 10%. Generally all work will be graded and updated by the end of each week. Papers/Essays/Reports can take longer to grade. By Friday of each week, late & absent work will be updated and put into Skyward. For excused absences, students must have classwork in by one week after their absence. PLEASE record “Absent” on any assignments turned in due to excused absence. *Plagiarized work will not be graded and will receive no points. Please refer to school policies on plagiarism and cheating. *Also, please note that I do not change or negotiate grade changes at the end of the term if the student has late assignments throughout the term. I can, however, offer you SKILL-BASED work to earn a passing grade in the course. COURSE CONTENT NARRATIVE READING, LITERARY ESSAY, and INFORMATIONAL READING. We will be focusing on FIVE essential standards: 1. Main Idea & Analysis, 2. Informational Writing, 3. Synthesis of Ideas, 4. Argumentative Writing, and 5. Discussions. Each term will address one of these standards, while taking in or reinforcing others. READING You will read for 15 minutes at the beginning of each class. You will get 5 points per week if you bring your own book to class! Book Reports: We will generally have two reports a term, with at least half a book read by midterm and finished by end of term. Late Policy: Assignments submitted after the due date will be docked 10% if turned in by the next class. Any assignments turned in after that point will be docked 50%. Hall Passes Generally, I do not let students out to go use the restroom or run to their lockers unless it’s an emergency. However, each term you will be given one Hall Pass that will allow you to get out of class for a short break. This is my “non-judgment” pass to leave as needed. *10 points awarded end of term if not used.
