ENVIRONMENTAL CATEGORIES (AS PER AS/NZS 2728: 2013) ROOFING SCREWS
All of our self-drilling roofing screws are supplied with high performance anti-corrosive coatings and specialised materials to meet the AS 3566:2002 standard for self-drilling screws in the building industry.
Our roofing screws are designed with careful consideration of the relationship of drilling speed, stability and stripping torque for drilling performance. This eliminates the cost of drilling and tapping holes as separate operations.
EDL Roofing and Wall screws use a new innovative coating that is extremely resistant to corrosion. It has bridged the gap between Stainless Steel and Galvanising in the fastener industry and in many cases is a cost effective alternative for some Stainless Steel fasteners. This unique coating is Hydrogen Embrittlement free, drills faster, lasts longer and adheres strongly to the metal substrate, has been engineered to perform in real world applications and is suitable for use in ISO 9223 categories 3, 4 and 5.
Extensive real world testing has been established the durability of our new coating, including on the under-head and shank of the screw. Being comprised of a hard, high density alloy it is retained post driving, significantly improving the life of the fastener, sheeting and purlins.• Being thinner coating it has less driving resistance and thread gauling.
• Unique alloy has a low coefficient of friction making for faster, easier driving.
• Fully compatible with all steel based substrates commonly used in New Zealand.
• Available in plain and in a range of colours to match roofing and cladding colours.
Test screws (right) and Class 4 (left) drilled through galvanised steel during accelerated testing.
Simultaneous corrosion testing of post-driven concrete fasteners- electro-plated Zinc (left), 55μm mechanically-plated Zinc (middle) and (right) EDL coating on a galvanized backing plate during accelerated testing

These Environment Categories should be used as a guide. It is the users responsibility:• To identify the environmental category to which the product will be exposed for the duration of its life, including any micro-climates that
may affect the fastener.• To ensure that during installation, there is no physical damage to the product’s protective coating and that installation procedures are
correctly carried out.• To ensure that the product is not subjected to unintended conditions during its life. This includes exposure to fire or other elevated
temperatures.• To ensure the product is maintained correctly for its life. Refer to the EDL Roofing and Wall Cladding warranty document.• If there is any doubt on the correct fastener contact EDL Roofing Division for advice.• For other materials being fixed that are not listed in this table, contact EDL Roofing Division for specific advice.
• Our fasteners should be compatible with the sheeting they are fixing when they are used in the appropriate environment.
• It is the user’s responsibility to ensure compatibility of the fasteners and the roofing or wall cladding materials. If in doubt, contact EDL Roofing Division for advice.
• All NEO washers are DEKS brand being low carbon content to minimise conductivity.• All EDL TimbergripsTM, Steegrips and DualgripsTM are suitable for all New Zealand atmospheric
environments (refer to the EDL Roofing and Wall Cladding warranty document).

Notes
1. The profiles listed above are a selection from those currently on offer. There are many others available from other manufacturers, similarly dimensioned. When pairing “off the shelf” washers to a customer’s profile, it would be prudent to compare physically to ascertain suitability.
2. Use as a guide only. However, screw lengths shown are based on MINIMUM required embedment as described in Section 7 of the “NZMRM Code of Practice.”
3. Embedments: A minimum of 35mm and greater than 6x the screw thread diameter when drilled into softwood, and 5-6mm beyond the drill tip plus 3x threads minimum in steel purlin. (Refer to NZMRM Code of Practice section 7.5.1).
4. Subtract 6mm from lengths shown if no profile washer is used.
5. Round up to nearest screw length stocked.
6. Appropriate profile washer gauges should be at least 0.95mm in Stainless Steel, Zincalume® or galvanised. Furthermore they should be at least 1.2mm in aluminium.
7. Ensure a low carbon EPDM sealing washer is used.
8. Avoid using 316 Stainless Steel screws. 316 has a higher electrical potential than 304. Using 316 will increase the level of corrosion.
9. Do not use Stainless Steel screws with Zincalume® or other steel-based substrates. This will void the warranty of the roof material.
10. #5 point deep drilling screws should be used where purlin thickness is between 6mm and 12mm.
11. For further information refer to the NZMRM Code of Practice 2014, or EDL Roofing Division.
GENERAL SCREW FIXING GUIDELINES:
1. For fixing to metal purlins use a high drill speed (approx. 2500 rpm)
2. For fixing to timber purlins use a low drill speed (approx. 900rpm)
3. Do NOT use impact drivers. Impact drivers cause damage in two ways: 1/ Damage to the screw head causing premature corrosion 2/ Breakage of the timber fibres, lessening the pull out strength of the screw (refer to NZRM Code of Practice secion 7.5.1). The use of impact drivers invalidates the EDL Roofing and Wall Cladding warranty.
4. Ensure any swarf is removed promptly.
5. Ensure drive bits are in good condition, and replaced regularly to avoid damage to the screw head.

POLYCARBONATE ROOFING SCREW
The polycarbonate roofing screw comes with a unique wing design that eliminates having to pre-drill an expansion hole. It only requires a power drill/screw gun and a 5/16” hex socket. No drill bit is required. Temperature changes will cause polycarbonate roofing to expand and contract. So, allowances need to be made for thermal movement.
The polycarbonate roofing screw has a hex head with polycarbonate dome seal washer to suit either fibreglass or polycarbonate roof sheets. With its DualgripTM
feature, the polycarbonate roofing screw is applicable for fixing the polycarbonate roofing to both timber and metal purlins.

4. Notice of DefectThe warranty is subject to the customer giving EDL written notification of any alleged defect within 14 days of the customer (or any officer, employee or agent of the customer) first becoming aware of the alleged defect or from when the customer (or any officer, employee or agent of the customer) reasonably ought to have become aware of the alleged defect (whichever is the earlier). The customer must provide full details in the written notification of the alleged defect, including a copy of the proof of purchase and details of the date of installation, the head mark on the fasteners, the material the fasteners were fixing and the location and address where the alleged defect has occurred. Any claim is subject to inspection by EDL before any action is taken.
5. Environmental Characteristicsa. Environmental Characteristics should be used as a guide only. The warranty indicates the period of time that products are expected to fulfil their functional requirements with normal maintenance. In addition, these special conditions must be taken into account:
i. GEOTHERMAL – Variations in natural activity or draw-off from steam bores plus the effects of weather conditions makes it im-possible to precisely define the boundaries of these zones.ii. WEST COAST SOUTH ISLAND – Coal burning fires cause high concentrations of sulphur dioxide in the air, the high rainfall and the effects of a severe marine environment produce very aggressive conditions for this region.iii. MICROCLIMATE – Internal and external microclimates with high humidity condensation and pollution will alter the categories, and local knowledge is important in assessing the corrosivity of the location.
6. RemedyIf EDL is liable to the customer, whether under this warranty, in tort or otherwise, EDL’s liability will in all cases be limited to the replacement of the defective fastener (for the avoidance of doubt, this does not extend to the costs associated with the installation of the defective fastener or the repair or replacement of any roofing components or materials or other consequential costs directly or indirectly ensuing from or caused by the defective fastener) and will in no case exceed the cost of the defective product. There are no other implied terms and conditions under this warranty. EDL will not be liable for any other loss or damage howsoever caused including direct; indirect; consequential; or incidental damages.
7. MaintenanceTo ensure the performance of the fastener over its life, and to help prevent corrosion, regular maintenance is required. This includes the remov-al of dirt, contaminants, and debris from the fastener (including under solar collectors, sky aerials, and other devices installed on the roof or wall cladding). Generally, adequate rainfall will wash the fasteners, but in areas of low rainfall, or in naturally unwashed areas of the building or on low roof pitches or underneath devices, more frequent manual washing is required. This should be carried out using a soft bristle broom and fresh water, or with a low-pressure water-blaster (working away from the laps). More severe atmospheric environments will require more frequent maintenance. In all cases observe safe work practices. For specific advice or recommendations contact the EDL Roofing Technical Specialist.
8. Statutory Warrantiesa. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 (“CGA”), and other statutes may impose warranties, conditions or obligations upon EDL which cannot by law (or which can only to a limited extent by law) be excluded. Other than as expressly provided for in these terms, to the extent permitted by law, EDL excludes all such imposed warranties, conditions or obligations and excludes any warranty, condition or obligation imposed or implied under common law, equity or otherwise.b. Specifically, where the customer acquires goods from EDL for the purposes of a business:
i. the parties acknowledge and agree that the customer is acquiring the goods under these terms for the purposes of a business in terms of sections 2 and 43(2) of the CGA; andii. the customer agrees that all warranties, conditions and other terms implied by the CGA or any other statute or common law are excluded from these terms to the fullest extent permitted by law.
9. Wear and TearThis warranty does not cover damage caused by fair wear and tear of the fasteners.
For product or technical enquiries contact EDL Roofing Division at [email protected]
ROOFING AND WALL CLADDING SCREW WARRANTY continued
Terms and ConditionsThis warranty is subject to the minimum maintenance requirements, set out in paragraph 7 below, being met. Failure of the product due to inadequate maintenance is not covered. If the minimum maintenance requirements have not been followed, then the customer must show that the failure of the product was not caused by failure to follow the minimum maintenance requirements.
1. Installation a. The fasteners must be installed according to the New Zealand Metal Roof Manufacturers Inc. (“NZMRM”) Code of Practice. There must be no physical damage to the fasteners during installation (e.g. damage to the protective decorative or metallic coating, etc.) b. The use of impact drivers to install fasteners can cause damage to the decorative and/or protective metallic coating. This damage is not covered by this warranty.
3. Limitations- the warranty will not apply where:a. The incorrect fastener has been selected for the environment or profile. It is the user’s responsibility to identify the appropriate at-mospheric environments, and any special conditions or micro-climates present, for the life of the fastener, to ensure the correct fastener selection. If in doubt consult the EDL Roofing Technical Specialist.b. The fastener is being used for an application for which the fastener is not primarily intended, for example (without limitation) tanneries, or swimming pools etc. Any special applications should be discussed with the EDL Roofing Technical Specialist. c. Damage is caused to the product after the product has left EDL’s control and before it is installed. d. Defects or failures have been caused by faulty building design or method of construction/manufacture.e. The fastener is not compatible with the roofing or wall cladding material with which it is being used.f. Material changes in the use of the building which cause contaminants to become present.g. To the extent permitted by applicable law, if any alleged defect, fault or default arises, in whole or in part from the following conditions:
i. chemical, mechanical or other damage sustained during storage (including, without limitation, due to inappropriate storage conditions), handling, installation or subsequent to installation of the product;ii. damage caused by fumes, solids, liquids or chemical agents, other than direct rain falling on the products;iii. contact with soil, ashes, fertilisers or other moisture-retaining substances;iv. areas in direct contact with lead, copper or brass, or subject to water runoff from flashings or pipes made from these materials;v. storm, volcanic/geothermal activity, tempest, war or Acts of God;vi. metal fatigue caused by incorrectly installed or tensioned products and/or other fasteners;vii. changes to existing environmental conditions that impact detrimentally on the products.

term is defined in the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993). In such event as between the Company and the Customer, the guarantee provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 are expressly excluded and shall not apply to any supplies of goods and services by the Company to the Customer.
9. Goods returned for credit
9.1 EDL is not obliged to accept the return of any goods for credit. Requests for goods to be returned for credit will be considered only if received in writing within 7 days of the delivery of the goods and quoting the invoice number, and if the goods are in the same condition as despatched. EDL may grant or refuse any such requests at its sole discretion.
10. Buyer’s undertakings relating to Consumer Guarantees Act 1993
10.1 Buyer undertakes in relation to goods it acquires from EDL.
10.2 Not to give any express written guarantees on behalf of the manufacturer, or NZ importer, or distributor of the goods, or on behalf of EDL except with EDL’s express written approval.
10.3 That it will not use EDL’s goods for any purpose for which they are not suitable, and it will (wherever appropriate) correctly advise its customers as to the purposes to which EDL’s goods should or should not be put.
10.4 That any literature that it may supply and which relates to EDL’s goods will comply with the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.
10.5 To immediately notify EDL in writing of any claim Buyer may receive pursuant to the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, giving details of the EDL goods concerned, and claimant’s contact information.
10.6 To effectively and in writing contract out of the Customer Guarantees Act 1993 whenever it agrees to supply EDL’s goods to Buyer’s own customer, for the purposes of that customer’s business.
11. Buyer’s indemnity to EDL
11.1 Buyer agrees immediately on demand to indemnify EDL against liability (including liability to claims, costs and expenses defending claims), which would not have arisen, had Buyer complied with the undertakings set out in clause 10 above.
12. Termination
12.1 EDL may (in addition to its other rights) terminate the contact if Buyer fails to comply with any of these conditions or other terms of agreement with EDL or commits an act of bankruptcy, or (being a company) has a receiver appointed or goes into liquidation, or compounds or arranges with its creditors, or if EDL has reasonable grounds to believe that its goods have been or will be destroyed, damaged, endangered or removed from Buyer’s normal place of business (except in the ordinary course of trade). Upon termination, Buyer agrees that EDL or its agent(s) may enter Buyer’s premises (or other premises to which Buyer has access and where any of the goods subject of the contract are stored) during normal business hours, without notice, and search for and recover its goods, and may resell any of them, without incurring any liability to Buyer or any person claiming through Buyer. Buyer may not revoke the permission granted in this clause.
12.2 Upon the Company becoming entitled to terminate a contract with the Customer, the Company shall also be entitled to terminate all other contracts with the Customer so far as they are unfulfilled, without prejudice to the Company’s rights to recover all moneys owing to it in respect of deliveries already made and services already provided. The Company shall be entitled to dispose of the balance of the goods contracted for, and the Customer shall indemnify the Company for any loss in price incurred by it on realisation against that price at which such goods were contracted to be bought by the Customer.
13. General
13.1 Nothing contained in these conditions shall be deemed to exclude or restrict any rights or remedies the Buyer may have under the Fair Trading Act 1986. If the provision in these conditions is illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the validity and enforceability of the remaining provisions will not be affected.
14. Personal Property Securities Act 1999
14.1 For the purposes of the Personal Property and Securities Act 1999 (PPSA), Buyer agrees these conditions constitute and create a security agreement. Buyer grants a security interest in favour of EDL in all Buyer’s present and after-acquired inventory of industrial fasteners supplied to Buyer by EDL, and all proceeds and accounts receivable in relation to that inventory (which present and after-acquired inventory is hereafter in this clause 14 of these Conditions referred to as “Goods”) to secure the payment by Buyer to EDL of all amounts Buyer may owe EDL from time to time and at any time in respect of such Goods.
14.2 EDL may at its discretion and in such manner as EDL determines allocate payments made by Buyer for all and any Goods.
14.3 Until payment is made to EDL, Buyer agrees to store the Goods in a manner, which permits them to be identified, and cross-referenced to particular invoices for the goods.
14.4 To the extent permitted by law, if Buyer defaults under these conditions or under any other payment obligation to EDL:
7. (a) Each security interest created in favour of EDL will become immediately enforceable.
8. (b) EDL may, at any time, by notice to Buyer declare all or any part of the moneys owing to EDL to be due and payable immediately, upon demand or at a later date as EDL may specify.
9. (c) EDL may:
(i) Take possession of and either sell or retain the Goods; and
(ii) Pay any expenses incurred in the exercise of any such powers out of the revenue from, or proceeds of realisation of, the Goods.
(iii) Under Sections 133 and 134 of the PPSA, to reinstate the security agreement; and
(iv) To receive a copy of the Verification Statement or a Financing Change Statement relating to EDL’s security interest.
14.5 Buyer shall give written notice to EDL immediately upon any change of name of Buyer.
14.6 On being requested by EDL, Buyer shall promptly do all things (including signing any document) and provide all information necessary to enable EDL to perfect and maintain the perfection of any and each security interest granted to EDL by Buyer (including by registration of a Financing Statement).
