Humans have always looked for protection under roofs. Not only in order to protect themselves from the forces of nature and wild animals, but sometimes even otu of the fear that the sky could fall on their heads. There were only caves, that offered security to early humans. But soon they began to build their homes with their own hands and ideas. About 2500 B.C. the Greeks then developed the forerunner of our present-day roofing tiles - already at that time made of fired clay - and in doing so revolutionised roof construction.

And up to this day a clay tile roof is a symbol of quality and security.

The development of the building of houses therefore always went hand in glove with the further develop-ment of roof covering. While in the course of the centuries the external walls of the house became increasing-ly stable and stone was discovered as a building material, roofs also had to meet people's new, more sophisticat-ed standards.

Thus, depending upon the region, wood in addition, stone slabs were used as the frst more solid roofng. With the discovery and development of the building material clay the way was cleared for tiles as a roof construction material almost without competition.

Julius Caesar was obviously already inspired by this invention, because he was considerably involved in mak-ing clay tiles popular throughout the whole of the known world. That tiles made of clay are genuine natural products, since for their production only the

four basic elements of earth, water, air and fre interact, was and is a further point for the popularity of these products.

With unmistakable surface fin-ishes and expressive colours, you have almost unlimited design possibilities.

Our colour palette begins with natural red tiles. Only fired clay tiles can be called 'natural red'. The appearance of this colour shade can vary, like it also appears in nature, e.g. in the case of flowers and leaves..

Our natural firing it is a special production process to achieve particular colour shades. The main feature is that the colours go right through the whole tile, i.e. the tiles are through-coloured.

Our natural engobes represent a kind of colour closer to nature. An engobe made of natural minerals is applied to the dried clay tile before firing. These fine clay slurries allow natural earth-coloured tones. During firing the engobe forms a permanent bond with the clay tile creating a lively nuanced interplay of colours.

Sinter engobes are refined by the addition of glass particles. The surface is significantly harder and therefore less sensitive to mechanical shocks and scratches. Besides, the denser surface has a dirt repellent effect similar to a glaze. Our Sinter engobes are vapour-permeable and character-istically semi-glossy.

Brilliant glazes are ceramic surface finishes changing the look of the tile. These glazes fuse when being fired and give the tile that vivid, glassy appearance. The shimmering hues of different intensity ensure a natural inter-play of colours. We consciously call this look 'nuanced' since every clay tile turns out unique.

Regarding their surface quality the Trend glazes match the Brilliant-glazes: the smooth fnish results in a dirt repellent effect, while the hard surface imparts robustness to the tile. As for the visual impression the two glazes are quite different regarding shine.

The satin surface fnish of the Trend-glazes reflects 90 % less light. For an intentionally matt visual appearance.

The brilliance of glazes and tile colours can be shown only approximately. A better impres-sion of the colouring can be obtained by looking at sample tiles. Please note that even cur-rent sample tiles are always to be considered average samples.

No matter which colour best matches your house: the red, yellow, brown and grey tones of the Hohlpfanne always make a valuable contribution to the overall appearance of your real estate.

A special manufacturing process is used to achieve particular colour shades: natural fring. The main feature is that the colours go right through the whole tile, i.e. the tile is through-coloured. Adding the natural mineral titanium oxide to the clay mass produces yellow shades, whilst mixing in manganese produces the brown colour spectrum. The removal of oxygen during the fring process changes the natural red body completely into a grey shade known as subdued grey.

The resulting colours are unsurpassed in their lively appearance, showing distinct nuances and a particularly intense and natural interplay of colours in the sur-face effect.
