Staples Center is the largest indoor sports and entertainment venue in the world’s entertainment capital, and is the only arena in the United States to serve as home to five major professional sports franchises, including two NBA teams and one NHL team.

The 954,000 square foot facility includes two public concourses and three private concessions, 180 luxury suites, 2,500 premium seats, a broadcast studio, and a team store. Enveloping the oval bowl in a circular plaza allowed for dynamic layers of interior space with open terraces and 85’ public lobbies with five-story atriums.

Lincoln Financial FieldPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Project completed by NBBJ.Ron Turner, Principal-in-Charge.

Lincoln Financial Field is a 67,000 seat, 172 suite football stadium that was uniquely designed to fit the needs of the Philadelphia Eagles and the personality of the city.

Innovations in the geometry of the superstructure and grid gives the stadium its distinguishing character as well as allowing the building to be completed ahead of schedule.

Lincoln Financial Field has three distinct building sections, each with its own character, emulating the diverse neighborhoods in the city of Philadelphia. The historic buildings and shipyards of the city also provide the inspiration for the use of brick and steel on the facades of the building.

‘The Linc’ contains unique and innovative hospitality and entertainment spaces including a divisible owners suite with direct access to an entertainment space for 400 people. The President’s club provides an intimate, distinct high end setting dedicated to 14 suites on a private level.

Columbus Crew StadiumSeattle, Washington, U.S.A.

Project completed by NBBJ.Ron Turner, Principal-in-Charge.

Columbus Crew Stadium established itself as one of the premier sports facilities in the country on May 15, 1999 as the first stadium in the United States dedicated to professional soccer. This 22,500-seat stadium combines the intimacy of European soccer, traditional American sports amenities, and The Crew’s hard-working image. Located within the Ohio Expo Center grounds, fans are just 24 feet from the sidelines at midfield. The design also features fan-favorite viewing plazas at the corners, allowing fans to gather at concessions without missing any action.

This building has hosted numerous international soccer matches and during the Ohio State Fair becomes a concert venue each night with nationally recognized music performers. This building was designed and built for under $30 million.

Safeco FieldSeattle, Washington, U.S.A.

Project completed by NBBJ.Ron Turner, Principal-in-Charge through Schematic Design Phase.

Combining nostalgic ballpark elements with the demand for amenities and revenue-generating features, Safeco Field is the world-class home for the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball Club.

The brick facade and curved entry behind home plate reference great ballparks of the past like Ebbets Field, responding to dual contextual forces: Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square district and nearby Port of Seattle with its waterfront docks and large steel cranes. The 650-foot span retractable roof glides over the playing field on steel rails, allowing for a natural grass turf and giving fans the opportunity to enjoy outdoor baseball in Seattle. The ballpark seats 47,116 and features 63 luxury suites and eight party suites.

Safeco Field was completed in July 1999.

Initial Vision Plan

Més que un estadi

In order for Futbol Club Barce-lona to achieve its goal of trans-forming Camp Nou into a highly visible and integrated urban destination, the remodeling project must transcend the nor-mal bounds of refurbishment to encompass the re-imagination of the entire district. The stadium itself must become a beacon that extends a welcome along the key avenues that access the build-ing while the surrounding site must be developed as an open urban environment accommo-dating everyday visitors as well as gatherings for special events. The gates must come down and a place must be made. Existing facilities must be reorganized to connect with the neighboring context and a sequence of public spaces introduced to engender non-game day activity and local interaction.

At the heart of this new district, the icon of FC Barcelona, the stadium’s heavy concrete frame will be clad with a series of light-weight pre-fabricated shells. The shells will be constructed in mul-tiple sections to minimize impact to seating capacity during con-struction. In accordance with the Club’s priorities, it is intended that the construction will pro-ceed safely and efficiently while the stadium maintains a capac-ity at or above current average attendance figures. Completed season by season, the shells will enclose new efficient vertical transportation systems, im-proved concession and restroom facilities and required structure for the new seating canopy.

Designed to enhance Club Mem-bers’ experience before, during and after a match, the renova-tion of Camp Nou will also create a vibrant urban district that will be of lasting value to the Club, the surrounding community and the City of Barcelona. Of the many goals that FC Barcelona has achieved in its long history, this project has the potential to be its greatest goal ever.

Saitama ArenaSaitama, Japan

Project completed by Ellerbe Becket.Ron Turner, Principal.

The symbolic heart of Saitama Prefecture, the Saitama Super Arena is the central element of a major mixed-use entertainment complex. The $750 million complex is seen as a striking visual demonstration of Japanese technology coupled with the latest in American Design. The arena, designed as a multi-purpose venue includes technology to move seating, ceilings, lighting and plumbing to seamlessly create a 40,000 seat soccer venue, 20,000 seat arena for basketball, hockey and concerts as well as a 3,000 seat performing arts venue.

The building is also home to the John Lennon Museum, exclusive restaurants and a Japanese Sports Hall of Fame. The building was opened in 2000 by the US A Basketball (Dream Team) in a series of exhibition games prior to the Sydney Summer Olympics.

Chase FieldPhoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.

Project completed by Ellerbe Becket.Ron Turner, Principal-in-Charge.

Located in downtown Phoenix, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ home ballpark is a state-of-the-art, retractable dome with a natural grass playing surface.

It was only the second MLB stadium at the time to have a retractable roof. The roof opens to various positions to make sure a proper amount of sunlight hits the natural turf without heating the concrete and metal within the stadium, thus allowing it to cool quickly and efficiently. With the roof in the closed position, the minimum height over the playing surface is 180 feet and the maximum height is 200 feet.

Eighty-five percent of Chase Field’s 48,569 seats are located between the foul poles. There are 69 luxury suites located at the mid-level of Chase Field, as well as six additional party suites. Chase Field’s roof is opened or closed depending on the game-time temperature. When the decision is made to close the roof, it is left open for as long as possible before game time in order to keep the grass alive. Even when closed, the park’s design allows just enough sunlight to play in true daylight without overheating the stadium. The roof is closed three hours before game time, and a massive HVAC system drops the temperature inside the park 30 degrees by the time the gates open.

Turner Field / Olympic StadiumAtlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

Project completed by Ellerbe Becket.Ron Turner, Principal-in-Charge.

The design challenge was to create an Olympic Stadium that could convert into a major league baseball stadium after the 1996 Olympic Games.

After opening in 1997, the “Home of the Braves” has quickly become an Atlanta landmark and the benchmark for future baseball park design. Turner Field combines the nostalgia and the atmosphere of old-time baseball with state-of-the-art family entertainment unlike that of any other park.

Turner Field is unrivaled in its blend of technology and entertainment. At all times, fans are entertained and informed of Turner Field activities through superior sound systems, the BravesVision video board in center field, the PlazaVision board in the Fan Plaza and over 500 television monitors situated throughout Turner Field.
