Welcome to Sadler’s Wells Theatre

We are a world-leading theatre for dance in London. You may come here to see a wide range of dance shows from contemporary to flamenco, ballet to hip hop and more.

The Venue

This is the main entrance to Sadler’s Wells theatre.The theatre is along Rosebery Avenue in Angel.

You will go through these red doors to enter the foyer. You can wait in here before the screening begins.

You will see the ticket office. This is where you may come to buy or collect your tickets.

There is a bar where you can buy a snack or drink.

You may also like to go to the café.

You will walk through these sliding doors towards the reception.

You will then turn right past the reception and into café. You may like to eat your lunch here or buy something from the café before the screening starts.

You can find toilets on 4 levels of the theatre. They are located in the basement, mezzanine, first circle and second circle.

We have an accessible toilet on 4 levels.

To get to the auditorium, you can enter from the foyer if you are sitting in the Stalls.

You need to go to the first floor or second floor if you are sitting in the circles.

You can either take the stairs or use the lift.

This is the mezzanine level where you can relax before and after the screening.

This is the first circle. You can relax here before and after the screening.

This is the second circle. You can relax here before and after the screening.

You can enter the auditorium from entrances on both the first and second circles. You may like to ask an usher to help you find the entrance to your seat.

This is the auditorium where the screening will take place.The auditorium will seat 998 people.

The lights will be dimmed before the film begins but it won't be dark. You will still be able to see.

During the screening, you can come and relax in one of our designated break out areas, these are found on the red sofas in the foyer on the stalls level or in the Rosebery room on the first circle.

There will be a screen on stage to watch the film.

There is an interval halfway through the film and the lights will come on.

After the show finishes the lights in the auditorium come back on and everyone will leave. You can wait in your seat until everyone else has gone and it becomes quieter.

Guide to sound and specific scenesRomeo and Juliet: Beyond Words is accompanied by music throughout the film. The sound levels are lowered for Relaxed performances. Sometimes this music is loud and sometimes it is quiet. If the music feels too loud, you can cover your ears if you like, or visit the ‘break out space’.

In the opening scenes, a fight breaks out between the townspeople. This might seem a bit startling, but this scene does not last for long and none of the characters get hurt.

When the fight that breaks out between Tybalt, Mercutio and Romeo you will see the characters becoming angry, sad and some characters appear to be hurt. This has been created using special effects. If you feel uncomfortable watching this, you can take a break in the break out space.

Later in the film, Juliet is forced to marry Paris and she shown to be sad. Like Juliet, you may also feel this way and that’s okay. Following this scene, Juliet is shown to take a potion that makes people believe she is dead. This may make you feel sad, but Juliet is only asleep.

At the end of the film, Romeo thinks Juliet is dead and because of this, drinks a poison to end his life. Juliet awakens to find Romeo is dead and so stabs herself as she does not want to live without him. This scene can be distressing, and it is okay to feel upset. If you feel you need to visit the ‘break out space’, please do.

1 Mercutio and Benvolio are hanging out in the market square waiting for Romeo to arrive.

2 Romeo arrives, in pursuit of Rosaline, but he fails to get her attention.

3 Romeo is not disheartened by her rejection; he blows her a kiss as she leaves and then he dances with Mercutio, Benvolio and their friends in the market square.

4 Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, who is from a rival family, arrives in the town square.

5 After teasing each other, a fight breaks out between the townspeople.

6 Prince Escalus, who rules the town, arrives, and says there must be no more fighting, because there are too many deaths.

7 Juliet is in her bedroom, playing games with her Nurse.

8 Juliet’s Mother and Father arrive, with Paris. They want him to be her future husband

9 Juliet is reluctant at first, but she realises that it is time for her to grow up.

10 Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio hang out, and guests make their way to a garden party that Juliet’s parents are holding.

11 Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio decide to go to the party because Rosaline will be there. They sneak in secretly, via the back door.

12 All the guests dance together at the Capulet party.

13 Juliet politely dances with Paris, at her parents’ request.

14 The party continues; Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time.

15 Juliet plays music for her friends, and Romeo dances for her.

16 Romeo and Juliet dance together but aren’t allowed to because they are from feuding families. Mercutio and Benvolio distract the other guests at the party until Tybalt directs them all away.

17 Romeo and Juliet dance and get to know each other. They are interrupted a few times and Romeo manages to hide, until Tybalt catches them together.

18 Tybalt gets angry but Juliet’s Father reminds them of the warning Prince Escalus gave the day before. Romeo says goodbye to Juliet and the party ends without any fighting.

19 Romeo visits Juliet in the middle of the night, and they dance together on her balcony. They kiss and declare their love for each other. There will now be an interval.

20 The next day, everyone is back in the market square, and spirits are high.

21 A wedding party arrives with their priest and Romeo realises that he wants to marry Juliet.

22 Juliet’s Nurse arrives with a letter for Romeo. Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio tease her by disguising their identities until Romeo takes the letter.

23 Juliet’s letter asks Romeo to meet her in the church so they can get married.

24 Mercutio is entertaining the crowds in the town square. Tybalt hears the music and is still angry about the way he was treated at the Capulet party, so he decides to start another fight.

25 Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, tries to fight Romeo but Romeo doesn’t want to because he has just married Juliet. Mercutio decides to fight in his place.

26 A big fight breaks out. Everyone joins in with the excitement, chasing Tybalt and Mercutio through the streets. The fight turns suddenly serious when Mercutio gets stabbed.

27 Everyone thinks Mercutio is joking at first, but they soon realise that he is seriously injured. When Mercutio dies, Romeo is overwhelmed with grief and anger, and he fights Tybalt to get revenge for his best friend’s death.

28 As it starts to rain, Romeo and Tybalt fight, and everyone realises that this is unlike any of the play fighting that has happened before. The fight continues until Romeo kills Tybalt.

29 Romeo is horrified by what he has done and realises he has to run away when Lady Capulet, Juliet’s Mother, arrives. She is completely distraught with grief and cradles Tybalt’s body in the rain as she cries.

30 Romeo spends the night with Juliet, but at dawn he realises that he has to go into exile in order to protect himself and Juliet. Juliet is reluctant to let him go, but eventually they kiss Juliet is reluctant to let him go, but eventually they kiss goodbye.

31 Juliet’s Mother and Father visit her in her bedroom together with her Nurse and Paris. They want her to commit to marrying Paris, but she refuses.

32 Juliet’s Father tells her to do as she is told, and Juliet struggles with her emotions as she contemplates what to do – she wants to be with Romeo.

33 Juliet visits Friar Lawrence for advice. He takes her to get a potion that will make her appear dead. She is nervous but Friar Lawrence reassures her that his plan will work.

34 When Juliet returns to her bedroom, her parents visit her once again with Paris, and Juliet submits to them this time, knowing that she will end up with Romeo.

35 Juliet is nervous about taking the sleeping potion, and she builds up the courage to drink it. Everyone will think she has died, and she will be free to live the rest of her life with Romeo.

36 Juliet’s friends visit her in her bedroom. It takes them a while to realise that she is dead, and when they do, they cry and mourn together with her Nurse and her parents.

37 Romeo arrives in Juliet’s crypt and finds her dead. He didn’t receive the message that she is only pretending, so he is distraught and tries to wake her up. He fails, decides to drink a deadly poison to join her in death, and collapses next to her deathbed.

38 Moments after Romeo has died, Juliet wakes up. When she sees Romeo on the floor, she understands that the plan has failed. She cries.

39 Realising that she doesn’t want to live without Romeo, Juliet stabs herself with a knife. She dies with her fingers just inches away from Romeo’s hands.
