Message from the Director
The year is 1939.The UnitedStates is be-tween warsand watchingEurope closelyfor its activity. The financialstability in theUS is factory
based as the industrialization haspicked up after the Depressionand WWI although there are con-flicts between factories andunions. However, affluence is notthe norm. So we are dependenton entertainers and thosepoliticians, philosophers, scien-tists, and journalists who travelthe country providing diversionswhich give us a broader view, in-form us, and entertain us. Thusbegins the story of The Man WhoCame to Dinner. I was not, as will surprise somewho know me, alive in 1939. Iwas fortunate to have parentswho were and my base knowl-edge of the era comes from theconversations sharing experienc-es and the photos they were kindenough to share and events theydetailed for me. To me it seemedquite glamorous but I do realize itwas a time of hard work and, of-ten, want. I have found one of thegreatest challenges I have haddirecting this play: getting mycast, most of whom are signifi-cantly younger than I, to under-stand that in 1939 one did notdefy one's parents (some oftenheard phrases include "because I
said so", "not if you plan to liveunder my roof", and "I broughtyou in to this world; I can take youout!") by doing what one wouldchoose as a profession nor bymarrying whomever one mightchoose unless approval wasgranted by one's parents. Every-one sat down to meals togetherand church, country, work, com-munity and family were what onelived for. And so our play contin-ues. This group of 28 thespians hasbeen such a delight! Every one ofthem has stepped up in someother way besides working onhis/her part. I am so fortunate tohave had the pleasure to workwith each of them! And they havebeen well supported by the al-most invisible crew who hasmade sure we look good, soundgood, are period appropriate asbest as possible, and who makessure things run smoothly and ev-eryone gets where he/she needsto be at the right time. My sincereadmiration to everyone involvedwith the production! You eachhave a special place in my heart! Thank you for finding the time inyour busy schedule to attend thisshow. Without you, our audience,we would have no reason to exist!Your generosity and kindness aregreatly appreciated. Many sincerethanks.

When I first read The Man Who Came to Din-ner, I was astounded at the number of refer-ences to early 20th century celebrities andthings. In college I had majored in History, and I only knew maybe half of the references.Figuring that most folks in the cast would beequally clueless, I embarked on a researchproject that would identify the many referencesso that the play would be a bit more under-standable.
Characters Who Portray Real People
The play’s central character, Sheridan White-side, is based on Alexander Woolcott, thepompous and outspoken critic, journalist, intel-lectual, and star of the national radio show,The Town Crier. Moss Hart and George Kauf-mann wanted to write a play based on Wool-cott, their good friend, but they were stumpedfor a plot idea. Then Woolcott arrived unan-nounced at Hart’s Bucks County Estate. Hetook over the house, slept in the master bed-room, and terrorized Hart’s domestic staff.Hart told Kaufman the story, and as they werelaughing about it, Hart remarked that he waslucky that Woolcott hadn’t broken his leg andgotten stuck there. Kaufman looked at Hartand the idea for the play was born. NotablyAlexander Woolcott himself later played White-side in a west coast run of the play.
Beverly Carlton, a key character of Act 2, is acaricature of the gifted Sir Noel Coward, aka“The Master.” Coward wrote 50 plays, 16 mu-sical revues, musicals, and operettas, and hecomposed over 300 songs. Fourteen of hisplays were adapted to film, and Coward partic-ipated as actor, screenwriter, director, or pro-ducer in 19 films. Using his acting career ashis “cover,” he also served as an intelligenceagent for the British government during WorldWar II. He won an Honorary Oscar in 1943 forhis naval drama In Which We Serve, and hewas knighted in 1969.
Lorraine Sheldon (Acts 2 & 3) is based on theflamboyant actress Gertrude Lawrence. Shemet a very young Noel Coward when she was15 years old. Later, Coward wrote several ofhis musical reviews and plays for her to star in,but she was famous in her own right. She wasalso notorious for spending money she didn’thave, much to the distress of her agent. Shewas the lead in the Broadway premiere of TheKing and I, winning the Best Actress TonyAward, but died from cancer during play’s run.
She was buried in the gown she wore for thenumber “Shall we Dance?”
Banjo (Act 3) is based on the zany HarpoMarx, the silent Marx Brother with the pink (lat-er orange) wig, wacky hat and pantomime act-ing, often embellished with many props thatemerged from deep coat pockets. Like hisfriend Alexander Woolcott, he was a memberof the Algonquin Round Table, a group of crit-ics, celebrities, and wits who met daily forlunch in the Algonquin Hotel and played elabo-rate practical jokes on each other. Harpo gothis nickname from playing the harp, which hetaught himself. When he died, he willed hisharp to the State of Israel.
Professor Metz (Act 1) is associated with Dr.Gustav Eckstein, a professor of physiology atthe University of Cincinnati from 1922 to 1960.His laboratory held a large group of canaries, and he published several stories about them inmagazines, which were read by AlexanderWoollcott to his large radio audience. Ecksteinand Woollcott got to be lifelong friends. Itshould be noted that besides all the canaries,Dr. Eckstein did keep a colony of PeriplanetaAmericana in his desk.
There is one other character loosely associat-ed with another real person, but to reveal thatconnection now would spoil one of the surpris-es of the play. Here is a challenge: watch theplay and see if you can figure out which char-acter it is and what real character from the erahe/she depicts? Here’s a clue: In AgathaChristie’s And Then There Were None (per-formed last season on the RLT stage), Detec-tive William Blore mentioned the real person inone of his lines. The answer to this challengewill be posted in the Lobby at the conclusion ofthe play.

This past year, the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was created to help securefunding to restore the DeSoto Theatre to its former splendor. With assistance from the FoxTheatre Institute, the tireless work of many volunteers and generous donations from ourmembers and friends, the rehabilitation process has begun with the repair of the ornateplasterwork in the vestibule and the complete remodeling of the upstairs meeting rooms.Although much has been done, many more restoration projects are needed.
