Throughout the month of February, both teachers sparked the interests of students to learn about Black History from a variety of perspectives. Ms. Warrick played an amazing role supporting the work of students in both classes. Pictured here is Channing, who completed her research project on Josephine Baker, an American born French entertainer and activist. Mr. Jian’s and Ms. Ali’s students have been doing a wonderful job growing their students’ math knowledge through the Montessori math materials. In their classrooms on any given day, students are working with the stamp game, the checkerboard, and more to develop a strong conceptual understanding of multi-digit operations. Both girls are new to CHML this school year and we are so proud to have them! Cameron participates on the CHML track team, where she competes in hurdles and relays. When asked to share a favorite assignment, she described an art project with Ms. Siham where students are currently making a creative headpiece with photo inserts to share their personalities with the world. Outside of school, Brooke is a cheerleader, and her squad recently competed in Ocean City. When asked to highlight a school project, Brooke described how she loved Ms. Chambers’ science assignment where she designed and made a cup holder that could be worn around your neck. Brooke is also part of the CHML Travel Club, where students and families are planning a trip to London, Rome and Paris.

T E N SO T O - Num R dThe initial lesson with the Number Rods is the first formal math presentation a child receives in the Primary Montessori classroom. The Number Rods are ten wooden rods that are painted red and blue. The first rod, representing “1,” is painted red and is ten centimeters long. The second rod, representing “2,” is twenty centimeters long, with the first half painted red and the second half painted blue. The third rod, representing “3”, is thirty centimeters long and is painted in alternate sections of red, blue, and red again. This pattern continues with all ten rods. The purposes of the Number Rods are to learn the names and sequences of the numbers from one to ten, to gain a concept of number as represented by a single entity, and to provide a foundation for our system of mathematics.Learn more about Number Rods and other Montessori math materials at the Primary Parent Ed Night on March 14!

GA ME - Mat s es Each of the digits 1 through 9 is used once and only once in the puzzle below. Can you figure out where they must be placed so that each of the equations is true. Only positive numbers are used. Submit your answer to Mr. Ben’s mailbox by Wednesday March 20th for your chance to win a prize! Student and family entries are welcome!

ED IN H LE L - Mon in M a It's important to know that we're all trying to navigate this new world of devices and tech, and it's not always easy. Kids are using a lot of media, and parents and educators feel a potent sense of anxiety about how to navigate it all. We don't want our kids to get hurt, or get in trouble! We must also keep in mind there are ways media can be great and offer amazing opportunities to our kids. Setting limits and discussing the potential pitfalls of technology can be tricky! Common Sense Media is a great resource that includes independent reviews, age ratings, & other information about all types of media. Check it out at… CommonSenseMedia.org.
