They want it to look like Training Day, it does Washington is walking that line where you dont know if hes a villain or not, and Reynolds isdoing the Ethan Hawke role. This looks decent enough, and the South African setting shouldgive it a bit of personality. [Critics: 53%] [Public: 6.8] Decent

A Navy SEAL squad goes on a covert operation to rescue a kidnapped CIA Officer, while alsotaking down terrorists who aim to strike America. Most of the people in the movie are real-lifeactive duty Navy SEALs, and the action is intended to be as authentic as possible to actualmilitary operations. This actually began life as a recruitment video for the U.S. military, soexpect a black and white view of the world, lots of back-slapping hoo-hahs, and probably basic-level dialogue and character-work. Still it is an original idea using real operators and military co-operation on this scale, and it should be interesting to see how the experiment turns out. The filmmakers say they are shiftingthis toward horror, away from the 2007 movie. Hes not really a superhero. His superpower isthat he sucks out your soul. Physica lly Ghost Rider will be more frightening this time, includinga jacket that bubbles like tar, and a mouth that spews fire. From the directors of Crank, whoalso scripted the dire Jonah Hex, this could go either way their shoot-from-the-hip style couldeither mean something fresh, or a lack of care and attention. Summer begins with the biggest crossover movie ever made. The all-star line-up includes IronMan, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). MarkRuffalo is replacing Ed Norton as The Hulk. Theyre all fighting Thors brother Loki and,presumably, the Skrull army he helps invade earth. Itll be fascinating to see how the leadcharacters are balanced and how they play off each other, it really does feel like somethingunique is happening. Director Joss Whedon has a daunting task on his hands. [Critics: 92%][Public: 8.4] Excellent

A small fleet of naval ships on exercise off the Hawaiian islands finds itself pitted against analien force intent on building a dangerous power source in the ocean. The movie will apparentlyshow the battle from both the human and alien perspectives, which sounds ballsy. The set-upand visual style do everything they can to appear like a Michael Bay movie, hoping to catch afraction of the Transformers crowd. Its based on the board game, but would actually be gettingpeople more excited were it not. 1985s Clue showed that you can make a good movie based ona board game, and Pirates Of The Caribbean was based on a theme park ride, but this seemssillier because its not being played tongue in cheek. Also casting Rihanna isnt helping itscredibility. At least a futuristic war movie set at sea is original and offers a spectacle not seenbefore. [Critics: 34%] [Public: 6.0] Mediocre

This reimagining sees the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) intothe woods to be killed, but instead winding up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest tovanquish the Evil Queen (Theron). The dwarves are a whos who of British acting talent IanMcShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Eddie Izzard, RayWinstone, Nick Frost and yes there are eight, which means one gets killed probably. Tonallythis is a dark fantasy adventure movie. Theres another Snow White movie out in Mar ch calledMirror Mirror, which is a ghastly-looking kids version. This actually has an excellent trailer andmay well surprise the doubters. Part of a planned trilogy. [Critics: 49%] [Public: 6.3] Decent

It was a brave move naming a Batman film The Dark Knight, since it didnt have the wordBatman in it. Theres nothing bold about the title here . That aside, this is easily one of theyears highlights. The plot involves the whole of Gotham descending into anarchy and mob rule,while Batman is put out of action. Tom Hardy looks imposing as Bane but his vocals seem hardto follow, Anne Hathaway plays an angry-looking Catwoman who appears to steal from the richbecause she has a chip on her shoulder, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a beat cop and MarionCotillard plays a Wayne Enterprises board member. Director Christopher Nolan has made itclear this is the final chapter for his Batman, so expect fireworks and major character death,probably. [Critics: 87%] [Public: 8.8] Excellent

Damon and previous directorGreengrass were determined to end the series with the third movie, but the studio wants tocontinue the franchise, as it has made them too much money. This is not a sequel or a reboot,but a standalone story about another agent (Renner) trained by the murderous shadow

government operation Treadstone, who went through experiences similar to Bournes or thecharacter played by Clive Owen in the original movie. Rachel Weisz plays the love interest.Edward Norton is the antagonist. Matt Damon is not ruling out returning to the series at a laterpoint, so this could act as something of a set-up for that. New director Gilroy adapted the

original trilogyand directed Michael Clayton, so its actually in pretty decent hands. [Critics:56%] [Public: 6.9] Very Good

Total Recall Starring: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy, Ethan HawkeDirector: Len WisemanOut: 3rd August 2012

With a story lying half way between the 1990 version and the 1966 novelette, this sees afactory worker (Farrell) begins to suspect that hes a spy, though he is unaware which side of the fight hes on (between nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai). Incredibly (unless Ivemissed something) the movie does not involve Mars in any way, which for me is an enormousletdown. Its also going to be PG -13, throwing out the wonderful bloody violence of the original.Colin Farrell can lead a good remake, as shown in the entertaining Fright Night redo.Unfortunately he is poison at the box office, and since this reportedly has a massive $200million budget, theres an even chance this might be one of the biggest money losers of theyear. The director of Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard will need to step up his game inevery respect. [Critics: 30%] [Public: 6.3] Mixed Reaction

The general feeling about the first movie was that it wasnt as good as its line -up. That maychange here with Stallone handing over directing duties to Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider).This time Schwarzenegger will do a fullweeks shooting, Bruce Willis will do two weeks as theexpected villain. And with the addition of Van Damme and Chuck Norris this is now the greatestaction cast ever assembled. Lets hope they can do it justice with a compelling story or at leastsome stunning fight scenes. In this fifth installment, game favourites Ada Wong, Barry Burton and Leon Kennedy all join theadventure, with the latter as the leader of a resistance group that unites with Alice (Jovovich) tofight Umbrella corporation and the undead. Chris and Claire Redfield (Wentworth Miller and AliLarter) are not in the movie as theyve been abducted by Umbrella. However, returningcharacters include Jill Valentine and, oddly, Rain, Carlos and One despite all three being killedin previous movies. Im guessing cloning or flashbacks are involved. Its not like the narrative

has to make any sense at this point. Jovovich has suggested that the Las Plagas parasite fromthe fourth video game will also feature in the story. [Critics: 29%] [Public: 5.9] Mediocre

In feudal China, a blacksmith (RZA) who makes weapons for a small village is put in the positionwhere he must defend himself and his fellow villagers. From Tarantino-collaborator and Wu-Tang Clan supremo RZA, and produced by Eli Roth, this is an ode to kung-fu, aiming at a cool,fun vibe, along the lines of 36th Chamber of Shaolin or Five Deadly Venoms. Were promiseda side to Russell Crowe we havent seen before. His character name is The Baddest Man Alive.Its his presence that makes this intrigu ing for me.

China will beone of the main locations. Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) directs from a script byWade and Purvis, whove been the main writers on every Bond since TWINE. Quantum was astumble from Casino Royale, replacing freshness with formula. Hopefully theyve learnt fromthe mistake. 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of Dr. No and the franchise.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) stars in this remake of the worst-fears-realised action- thriller from 84,about an invasion of the U.S. mainland by the Soviets and their Central American allies. Thatstory focused on a group of American high school students who resisted their foreign occupiersthrough guerrilla warfare. This time, its a North Korean invasion. It was filmed as the Chinesearmy, but the studio lost its nerve and altered the flags in post-production. Nonetheless, with

the Cold War long over this feels like an edgy, un-pc concept and Im extremely curious to seethe result. Also, due to MGMs bankruptcy, its been sitting on the shelf for over 2 years, so longthat Kim Jong-Il has died waiting, so thatll have to be updat ed too.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Starring: Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt, Richard Armitage, Andy SerkisDirector: Peter JacksonOut: 14th December 2012

Hobbit Bilbo (Freeman) begins his journey to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. The first movie in whathas now become The Hobbit Trilogy. The Desolation of Smaug follows exactly one year later,and the final chapter, There and Back Again comes six months after that. Sir Ian GandalfMcKellen returns, as does Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, and Hugo Weaving. Also in the mix aresmaller roles for Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, and Christopher Lee. Some have hadtheir fill of Lord Of The Rings , but after a 9 year break most will be pretty excited to see thisparticular story finally done right. The trailer has an adventurous spirit, showcasing fun andfrolicking alongside hints of darkness to come.

Spaghetti western set in Americas Deep South, which Tarantino calls a southern. The plotfollows a slave-turned-bounty hunter (Foxx) who, with the help of his German mentor (Waltz),sets out to rescue his wife (Washington) from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (DiCaprio).A plantation owner who forces his slaves to fight in twisted death matches. The fantastic castalso includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kurt Russell, Don Johnson, JamesRemar, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA and Tom Savini. It will be very interesting to see DiCaprio in avillain role, especially such a nasty one.
