Roman Republic

Julius CaesarJulius Caesar conquered Rome, became dictator, but was assassinated by

the Roman Senate on March 15, 44 BC!

Shakespeare later wrote about his assassination and coined the phrase, “Beware the Ides

of March!”

Asterix and Obelix Comics are about a Gaul named Asterix (and his friend Obelix) who

try to conquer the Roman Empire!

Caesar Augustus (Octavian)

He did not want to be emperor and hid behind a curtain when

his father was assassinated! However, he became one of Rome’s greatest emperors.

Nerva & Trajan

Trajan built roads, bridges and harbors, and

improved conditions for the

poor.

Hadrian

Hadrian built a wall in northern Britain to keep the “barbarians” (or Scott Celts)

out of what later became known as England.

Marcus AureliusMarcus Aurelius was a philosopher who

wrote a book called, Meditations. He said, “Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people

with whom fate brings you together,

but do so with all your heart.” He was the last of the “good

emperors.”

DiocletianDiocletian took power after much turmoil. To help save the empire, he divided it into two parts. However, in the long run, the empire became even weaker.
