How to go to Confession

1. You always have the option to go to

confession anonymously, that is, behind a

screen or face to face, if you so desire.

2. After the priest greets you in the name of

Christ, make the sign of the cross. He may

choose to recite a reading from Scripture,

after which you say: "Bless me Father for I

have sinned. It has been (state how long)

since my last confession. These are my

sins."

3. Tell your sins simply and honestly to the

priest.

4. Listen to the advice the priest gives you

and accept the penance from him. Then

make an Act of Contrition for your sins.

(Guides will be available for you)

5. The priest will then dismiss you with the

words of praise: "Give thanks to the Lord for

He is good. You respond: "For His mercy

endures forever." The priest will then

conclude with: "The Lord has freed you from

your sins. Go in peace." And you respond by

saying: "Thanks be to God."

6. Spend some time with Our Lord thanking

and praising Him for the gift of His mercy.

Try to perform your penance as soon as

possible.

WHAT WE DO AS CATHOLICS: Part 8: The Eucharistic Prayer Now that the altar and the gifts have been prepared, the Mass proceeds with the Eucharistic Prayer – this is actually the high point of the Mass I mentioned a few weeks ago. I will explain that further and in more detail in the coming weeks as I walk through the Eucharistic Prayers in detail with you. For now, though, I want to talk about the options you might hear. The Church offers four principal Eucharistic Prayers (I-IV) and several others for specific uses (e.g., Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation and various Eucharistic Prayers for Special Needs). The basic structure of all of the Eucharistic prayers goes something like this, though the order changes in some cases. I will go into more detail on each movement in the coming weeks.

1. Preface: expresses God’s gift of salvation in history 2. Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) 3. Epiclesis: calls down the Holy Spirit on the gifts 4. Institution Narrative: the words of Jesus that effect the consecration 5. Anamnesis: Remembers Christ’s historical sacrifice and victory 6. Second Epiclesis: calls down the Holy Spirit on the Church 7. Prayers for the living and the dead, including the pope and bishop 8. Doxology

Eucharistic Prayer I, also called The Roman Canon, is the oldest of these prayers. We can trace this prayer back to the 4th-5th century in forms that are recognizable as the current prayer. From the Council of Trent until the promulgation of Missal of Paul VI, this was the only Mass used in the Roman Rite. This option is encouraged by the Church on her highest feast days and Sundays. Eucharistic Prayer II was composed in the 20th century when the current form of the Roman Rite was prepared. It is loosely based on the Eucharistic Prayer found in the writings of Hippolytus in the 2nd-3rd century. You will notice we rarely use this particular option on Sundays & higher feast days. The guidance from the Church indicates that we use this prayer, principally, for daily Masses. Eucharistic Prayer III was written from whole cloth, as it were, with the preparation of the Missal of Paul VI. Even though this prayer doesn’t have the long history of the other prayers, in its own way, it expresses the Church’s theology of Eucharist, the Mass, and salvation in a beautiful way. The Church encourages us to use Eucharistic Prayer III on “Sundays and festive days” when Eucharistic Prayer I is not used. Eucharistic Prayer IV is based on the Anaphora of Saint Basil from the Eastern Divine Liturgies (Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic). It is unique among the Eucharistic Prayers in that it has a preface that must be used in it rather than options for the priest to pick an appropriate preface to the day. Because of that, the times it can be used are limited to days without a preface already prescribed by the Church. This prayer covers, in the briefest fashion, the whole of creation and salvation history, and, as such, is a beautiful, if brief catechesis on God’s plan. Fr. Joe Fessenden

We meet on Saturday mornings at 6:30 AM. Our study is Bishop Robert Barron's six-

part series "Priest, Prophet, King". This series on Jesus is a natural follow-up to our fall sessions that featured the Bishop's "King David". We'll have to decide on a second series for the spring. We start gathering for coffee, doughnuts & fruit at 6:15 AM but start the program at 6:30 AM. We then watch the DVD session and end with small group discussion. BRIDGE MINISTRY OUR MISSION IS TO ASSIST SAINT ROSE PARISHIONERS and those in the community having financial difficulties. We provide limited monetary assistance as funds allow and/or referrals to other local resources.

Throughout 2017, the Bridge Ministry received requests for help from more than 414 families. We were able to provide an average of $60 per family towards their Electric, Water or Gas bills, as well as gas cards and Rover tickets for families with special transportation needs.

This year, the cold weather has hit hard on our community; we have felt this through an increase in the families asking for help. In January of 2018, Bridge received requests from more than 54 families, and we’ve helped with an average of $73.43 per family; a total expense of $3,962. In 2017, the average expense per month was $2,065.

We are in need of both monetary resources and volunteers so we can keep helping our community. Bridge meets every Tuesday from 9:30am to 12:00pm. Monetary donations and Kroger cards are received at the Church Office. If you are interested in becoming a BRIDGE volunteer, please email Paul Reissner at reissners@bellsouth.net.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity for all our charitable works ministries at St Rose. The impact and hope given to our parish families and community is immeasurable.

LEGION OF MARY The Legion of Mary is an international lay apostolic organization whose membership offers service to the Church on a voluntary basis. Its goal is to glorify God by co-operating in Mary's and the Church's work. Our St. Rose Legion meets each week to pray, learn, and share

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CROWN STATE FREE THROW CHAMPIONS 2018 Thirty boys and girls participated in the event. We have 12 boys and girls from Middle Tennessee, ages 9 to 14, who were named Tennessee State Champions of the 2018 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

Congrats to our Saint Rose State Champion! Anna Graham was the winner of the 9 year-old girls in a shoot-out!! Congrats to our Saint Rose State Runner-Up! Zion Wade was the runner up of the 9 year-old boys.

Special Thanks to the following local St. Rose Marion Council 4563 brother Knights who helped make this year’s event a huge success: Youth Director John McNicholas, Rob Thomas, Jim Barnes, Paul Borkoski, Nick Bialkowski, and Frank Bongiorno.

The Saint Rose Science Olympiad team earned 1st place overall at the Science Olympiad Regional Tournament at MTSU on February 24th. Fifteen 6th-8th grade students competed all day in events such as Disease Detectives, Optics, Science Crime Busters, and Roller Coaster. Medals were given for the top 6 places out of 14 teams competing. This year’s competition included Central Magnet Middle School, Providence Christian Academy, and Rockvale Middle School. The Saint Rose team earned medals in an incredible 22 of the 23 events and took home 15 first-place and second-place medals! Because of their hard work and dedication, the Saint Rose team will be representing their school at the Science Olympiad State Tournament at UT-Knoxville on April 7th. We are grateful for your support and prayers. The Saint Rose Science Olympiad team members are: Will Becker, Chloe Carreras, Nicky Farone, Xander Fox, Gabby Gruber, Mary Hedge, Cecilia Held, Eric Jackson, Becky Klukowski, Kary Lorenzana-Dewitt, Sophie MaGinn, Madeline Myers, Miles Potter, Andrea Sagman, and Luke Speyrer. Their coaches are Tony Farone, Mary Farone, Lori Klukowski, and Lisa Sagman. Special thanks go to the following people for their time and talent in helping the students prepare for their events: Frank Bordash, Greg Doe, Jennifer Held, Matt Klukowski, Matt MaGinn, Orrin Sagman (Saint Rose alumnus), Nicole Speyrer (Saint Rose alumna), and Daniel Maune. And a big thank you to all of the parents of the team for supporting Science Olympiad and for being there on Saturday! Several Saint Rose alumni also competed in the high school division on Saturday: Father Ryan’s team (1st place overall at Vol State Regional) included Danny Farone and Central Magnet School’s team (1st place overall at MTSU regional) included Angelica Bautista, Ana Klukowski, and Gwyneth Polak. Both teams will be headed to the state tournament in April.
