Shiver By The River #4 and
Awards Banquet
11:00am - 5K and 10K Jim Dietrich Park, Muhlenberg
Wow, what a month February has been. Hello Winter!!! The challenges of running in
the month of February have been nothing but exceptional. However, we are moving
into the month of March, with the anticipation of daylight savings time, and better
weather. I almost hate to write the word, spring, for fear of putting a jinx on it.
We are quickly approaching our 4th and final Shiver Race, which will probably, and
hopefully, be a thing of the past by the time you receive this newsletter. In spite of all
the winter weather, we have managed to get the first 3 races in without too much in-
terference from mother nature. Hopefully #4 will be the same as we have our banquet
following the last race.
Our next race is the Mudfest, to be held April 19th. Pacers, please come out and
run and support what will be a new course under new direction. Ken Seale is now race
director for the 20th Mt. Penn Mudfest 15K. We hope to bring some real mud back
into the race with some great goodies to be received. The race will now start behind
Captain’s Cove, with parking in and around that area.
We continue to work on our membership list and some changes with the newslet-
ter printing. So please bear with us if your newsletter is a few days late. As always, the
newsletter is on our website, and in mentioning the website, please view it for all our
current races and social events. Also, we will be working toward people opting out of a
hard copy with our new membership drive in the fall for 2015. We do much with sup-
porting our environment, and this is just another way of us “going green.” One last
thing, in continuing to make our membership lists easier to work with and keeping it
current, you may get an email from RunSignUp.com; if you do, please just disregard it.
Please save the date for April 26. We will be asking for volunteers to come out that
morning to work on a clean up day for the city of Reading. We are requesting that we
work on the trails behind Phil Lechner’s house. More information will follow as the
date approaches. A Pacer luncheon will follow.
Our scholarship drive has ended. We have seniors from both cross country as well
as from Pacer families that we will be reviewing and selecting from. We will announce
the winners once they become available.
We are looking into having another blood drive over the summer months. Our blood
drive in January was beyond successful. The Miller Keystone Blood Center is always in
need of blood so once we have details on this we will let everyone know.
With all the ice and snow that are on the roads as well as on the trails, please be
careful. Hopefully, everyone will survive this winter season without any broken bones
and such from running. Happy and safe running to all.

Treasurer’s Report:
Shaun Luther presented the treasurer’s report and report-
ed the club is in good financial standing. Invoices for newslet-
ter advertisements have been sent out. The club’s bank ac-
counts have been switched from Sovereign Bank to Fulton
Bank. The taxes have not yet been started. The club is a tax
exempt organization so has until May 15th to complete taxes.
Race Director’s Reports:
Mt. Penn Mudfest: Ken Seale reported that there currently
are 169 runners registered. A letter was sent to The Berks
County Conservancy, letting them know a donation will be
made to them after the race. Ken also invited the Conservan-
cy to set up a table at the race. Ken met with a few of the
people from Berks Area Mountain Biking Association. A rela-
tionship is trying to be formed so that both groups help each
other, since both groups use the mountain. Ken met with
someone from Captain’s Cove. Erik Leeds will help with meet-
ing people from the different townships. Volunteers will be
needed. There will be no race day registration. There will be a
cap of 500 runners allowed for this race. This year’s race will
have a new course.
Shiver by the River: Sue Jackson reported that the last
Shiver race will be held on March 2nd. The party after this
last race will be held at the Temple Fire Company. Volunteers
will be needed for the race and at the Temple Fire Company.
Please come out and help. Door prizes also are needed.
Blues Cruise 50K: Mike Yoder reported that there currently
are three runners registered. This year camp chairs may be
given as the finisher awards.
No reports were given on the Charlie Horse Half Marathon,
Run for the Ages, Grings Mill Run, Jr. High XC Race, or Oley
Valley Country Classic, or Kris Kringle 5 Mile Run.
Social Events:
Karen Horn reported on the intro to rowing class that was
being offered to Pagoda Pacer members. The class could not
be held Friday February 14, but will be held Friday February
21 at the Flying Hills gym.
Public Relations Committee Report:
Katie Exas reported that she talked to Christin Kelley.
Christin will show what the Pagoda Pacer brochure looks like
at the March meeting.
Membership Report:
Katie Exas reported on membership. The 2014 member-
ship campaign was very successful. There currently are 430
members and 312 households receiving the newsletter. New
members will continue to be accepted. New members will
have the option of receiving the paper newsletter or not. The
club would like to eventually go green and have the newslet-
ter available only online, and phase out mailing newsletters.
The newsletter would then be accessible from the weekly e-
blasts.
Shaun Luther reported on streamlining membership. Road
Runners Club of America has free software that can be used
to better manage membership. This software also gives the
option where when you are joining or renewing your member-
ship, to select if you would like to receive the newsletter or
not. In an effort to reduce costs, Berks County Intermediate
Unit will now print the newsletter. BCIU will also put the ad-
dress labels on the newsletters. Katie or Ellie will pick the
newsletters up, put the adhesive tabs on them, and take
them to the post office for mailing.
Community Service Report:
Phil Lechner thanks those that brought donations for
Mary’s Shelter. Daylight savings time starts on Sunday March
9th. March 19th is “Bring a New Pacer Night”, and that run will
start at Nolde. April 23rd will be a charity run to benefit the
Animal Rescue League. Phil currently is looking for people
that are interested in hosting a gathering at their house after
the summer Wednesday night runs. Contact Phil if interested.
Scholarship Committee Report:
Beth Auman reported that the committee has started to
receive applications for the two Pagoda Pacer scholarships.
Old Business:
Katie Exas reported that she received a thank you letter
from Miller-Keystone Blood Bank. The club is considering hav-
ing another blood drive this summer.
Mike Yoder discussed money that is earmarked for Blue
Marsh. This money comes from the Blues Cruise registration,
where an option is given to donate extra money to Blue
Marsh. Blue Marsh would like to advertise on billboards for
the Get Outdoors Day and with water safety messages. The
club agreed to use this money to pay the cost of these two
billboards.
New Business:
Phil Lechner received a letter from the city of Reading ask-
ing for people to participate in the Great American Cleanup
on Saturday April 26. Reading is asking for donations to go
towards Reading Beautification Inc., and also Reading is look-
ing for volunteer groups to clean up sections of the city. Phil
suggested getting a group to start at his house and clean up
trails in that area, or Duryea Drive. The club is not interested
in making a donation, but is interested in getting a group to-
gether to participate in the cleanup. If you are interested in
volunteering, this will be on April 26 from 8:00AM to noon.
A request was made to give a donation to the Frozen
Knight 5K, which is held to raise money for the Reading H.S.
Cross Country team. After a discussion on this, it was decided
to talk to a running store and see if they would be willing to
(continued on next page)
M E E T I N G M I N U T E S , C O N T ’D manage money donated by the club which would be used to-
wards purchasing shoes. Phil Lechner will talk to A Running
Start and also the coach of the Reading High Cross Country
team. This topic will be revisited in March for further discussion.
Katie Exas discussed a Facebook member(s) scamming the
Pagoda Pacer Facebook site. That member has been blocked.
Beth Auman was contacted by a representative of the Berks
County Parks system. They are talking of possibly having a race
utilizing parks in the county park system. Berks County Parks
are looking to the club for advice, organization skills, and any
other input on holding a race. The club thought maybe someone
from Berks County Parks could attend a Pacer meeting, and the
club could hear more information and offer suggestions.
Celebrating Twenty
Years of the
Mt Penn Mudfest
On Saturday April 19th, 2014,
we will be celebrating our 20th
anniversary and with that, we introduce a NEW Mud-
fest. A new course, new race directors and a new
starting location. The Mt Penn Mudfest has been the
crown jewel of Pacer races, held the Saturday before
Easter and bringing in over 600 runners for the past
several years. I am very excited to be putting togeth-
er this race along with my fellow race directors, Erik
Leeds, Beth Auman, and Jeff Merritt. While there are
many ”New” things about the race, we will
have several things that remain the same.
The hidden Easter egg hunt on the course,
the raw egg carry and our Pig theme will
still be there as well as the rocks of Mt
Penn. As for some detail on the new… here’s a quick
recap. The race will now start and finish at the Moun-
tain Springs and Captains Cove Restaurant and Bar on
Hill Road. Our course will be a mix of new and old trails
in a lollipop type course featuring a “stick” of about 2
miles and a 5 mile loop returning to the “stick” which
will eliminate any crossover of the runners. We think
you will find this to be a challenging but enjoyable
course that will showcase the mountain very well.
If you would like to run the race, please go to either
www.pagodapacers.com or www.pretzelcitysports.com
to sign up as we are only offering online sign up. We
suggest you sign up quickly as we do have a limit this
year of 500 runners. All Runners will get a custom
T-shirt, finishers award and a meal ticket. Great new
food options will be provided by Captains Cove and we
can assure you that you will be very pleased with the
quality of the food! Also, your friends and family that
come to cheer you on will be able to order food as the
restaurant and bar will be open for business. This year
we will be collecting donations for the Berks County
Conservancy; this is a great opportunity to give back
to the mountain. We will be offering a special in the
bar where 1/2 of the proceeds sold will be donated to
the Conservancy as well as having a collection “PIGGY
BANK”. As always, our race depends on our running
club and volunteers will be needed before, during and
after the race. If you would like to help, please reach
out to any of the race directors.
Hope to see you there!
Blue Marsh Lake Adopt-A-Trail Reminder The Pacers have adopted the section of Blue Marsh Lake’s multi-use trail between Old Church Road and North Heidelberg Road, on the west side of the lake (the hilly side of what some call the “ski loop”).
Any trail maintenance efforts done on this section should be reported to Mike Yoder for recordkeeping. Please also let Mike know if you encounter any areas that need attention (trees down, overgrowth, etc.) so they can be addressed and/or reported to Blue Marsh.

The Power of the Pacer Persuasion and the Road to Your Next Adventure:
The Ragnar Relay By Jenn Seale
I have always been amazed by the diversity of talent within the Pacer community. What I find particularly in-teresting is how easily runners, in this club, can be swayed to try new things. 5k people doing Marathons, trail runners doing adventure races, and casual runners becoming Ultramarathoners. These transitions happen seamlessly, for instance, over a beer after a Wednesday night run. “Oh, your far-thest distance is 8 miles? That’s great. You could do a 50, easy!” And the 12 other people who have run this dis-tance nod their heads. And you’re left with mouth gaping open like, who ARE these people?! Before you know it, you’re at home on the computer signing up for Bull Run and your significant other is looking at you like you’ve just signed up to die. “What’s wrong with you?” to which you can only shrug your shoulders as you have no idea why. Best answer, “because someone asked me to?” There is just something about the Pacers and the ex-treme personal accomplishments that people have made that is infectious. “Maybe…. maybe, I could do that…” your little soft inner voice says. We don’t know why we dumbly agree to do insane things like run 100 miles (seriously, no one does this!) or try our hand at adven-ture racing or triathlons. And, yet, somehow the Pacers have an insane amount of MMT finishers, adventure rac-ers and triathletes, not to mention other distances in be-tween.
My husband, Ken and I have both fallen prey to the disorienting lure of the Pacer Persuasion. Ken joins the Pagoda Pacers and becomes a marathoner. The Pacers then convince him to do a 50K and 50 miles and then holy Sh** 100 miles! I’m like, “how is this really happening?! What is in the beer around here!”
I hated running as a kid, in my teens, in my 20’s and was happy to hate running in my early 30’s and then BAM! Ken, my own personal persuader, convinced me to do a 5k. It was the most UNenjoyable training of my life. It was painful and slow and horrible and humbling, but fin-ishing that 5k was like breaking free of my limiting thoughts of myself. Super empowering and amazing!! And I haven’t stopped running since! The Persuasion Factor continues as Libby talks us into doing The French Creek Fling, an adventure style race that included not only running, but mountain biking and canoeing amongst other crazy things. Libby literally had to teach us how to ride a mountain bike and as we strug-gle over roots and rocks, she says in her sweetest Aussie voice, “You’re doing great! Just keep coming. Not much farther.” I don’t recall how or why we actually signed up for that race, but we did it and continued racing together as a team for 9 years. Libby could still kick our butts, but I re-member her gracious time teaching us. So many Pacers

are like this. Here is the cool thing… once you become a Pacer, you do nothing alone. The same people who convince you to do something seemingly crazy, unreasonable, and com-pletely idiotic are the same people who will be there to train with you, support you, crew you or run along side you. There is no discrimination… just a supportive net-work of people who are willing to challenge your limited beliefs and help you rise above them. I am a Pacer. Ken is a Pacer. So many of you have helped us along our running path and helped us remove obstacles along the way. This found confidence has led us to try new challenges including the RAGNAR RELAY SERIES. So here is where WE persuade YOU! Even if you don’t enjoy racing or you consider yourself more of a solitary runner, this event is a great way to continue cultivating friendships while doing something we all have in com-mon… running. So, what is RAGNAR? Teams of either 12 people or 6 (ultra teams) will cover a distance of 200 miles over a 24 hour period. Each runner runs 3 times with total distanc-es ranging 10 miles to 25. This makes the race very acces-sible to all types of runners. NOTE: If you are an ultrarunner, you can ask for anoth-er runner spot which doubles your distance. Essentially, your team will have 2 vans with 6 people per van. Van one will have runners 1-6 and van two has runners 7-12. At the start of the race, runner #1 starts their “leg” which is a set distance, then hands off to run-ner 2 etc. Once all 6 runners in van one have finished, van two will then start running beginning with runner #7. Van one will jump ahead and will take over running again af-ter runner #12 finishes and this leap frog action continues until you finish. So there is always a runner on the road. If you are a PR seeker, RAGNAR has a way of
“inspiring” you to lay it all on the road. When you are run-ning for your team, it’s all or nothing. I have seen people with 9:30 paces pull off 8:00 min. miles… crazy!!! Even THEY don’t know how it happened. If you just want to be a part of the amazing experi-ence, this race is structured to accommodate fast and not so fast runners alike on the same team. It’s about the AV-ERAGE pace, so don’t worry about feeling “slow”... it doesn’t matter! I have done 5 RAGNARS, two with Ken, and we have more planned for the future. It is truly an adventure that brings people of all running abilities together to accom-plish a single goal… finishing the race with pride and hav-ing fun along the way. Since everyone is running at some point, there is a sense of true camaraderie that you are all sharing the same experience. You are giving everything you’ve got for the team. Did I mention the medal doubles as a beer opener. Oh, yeah it does!! Alright Pacers… Here it is… a NEW OPPORTUNITY! Add the RAGNAR race to your calendar! MAY 8 - 9th!!!! This event is in Cape Cod. It is a Friday to Saturday event so you may need to request time off from work and find kid, pet, house coverage…lol! Ken is accepting racers on his team. If you are interest-ed, please contact him at 610-858-6919. You will be rac-ing against MY team… should be fun!!!! Just in case the RAGNAR “bug” bites you, RAGNAR has many different race locations across the country includ-ing “local” Cape Cod, Niagara Falls, Washington, New Hampshire, and Adirondacks…. or travel to distant loca-tions like Moab, Southern California or the Florida Keys. And Ken and I are here, in PACER form, to help you along the way! Feel free to call or email if you have ques-tions. Anyone want to go out for a beer? Jenn Seale (610) 413-9240

Shiver #3 had 299 runners finishing
the 5K and 173 runners finishing the
10K, for our 2nd highest turnout for a
February Shiver. I guess it was the
balmy 30 degrees that brought everyone
out. As always, thanks to all of the vol-
unteers!
Shiver #4 will be held March 2nd. As always we need
more volunteers for this race. Specifically, we need 3 or 4
people willing to take results off of the board, so that the race
directors can calculate results as soon as possible. We also
need the usual help parking, on the road, at the finish line,
clean up, water stop, and within the house (serving soup, con-
stantly filling the snack baskets, keeping the bagel table full).
Anyone helping with registration, should arrive at Jim Dietrich
Park between 9:00 & 9:30; anyone helping during the race
should arrive by 10:30; either way, look for one of the race
directors and we can find something for you to do.
The awards ceremony will be held immediately after the
4th race, at the Temple Fire Company, 4963 Kutztown Road,
which is about 3 miles from Jim Dietrich Park. This is the
same location as the last couple of years. We will have direc-
tions at the 4th race. We are looking for more door prizes. If
anyone can donate personally, or secure a door prize, please
notify one of the race directors. To be eligible to win a door
prize, simply complete the survey at the awards banquet. A
cold buffet will be served shortly after noon, followed by door
prizes and then the awards. Due to the costs associated with
the party, we will follow the guidelines we established a cou-
ple of years ago.
The party is FREE to everyone who has either:
(1) Finished 3 or more races in this year’s series - please
bring your race number from the 4th race to the par-
ty, it will be your ticket for free entry. We will place an
additional label on the back of your number which
will indicate your eligibility;
(2) Assisted with any of the races; or
(3) Paid for the series.
We will be charging all others (including Pacers who do not
fall into one of the above categories), a $10.00 fee to help
cover some of our costs.
Remember, to help us maintain accurate results, DO NOT
COMPLETE ANOTHER REGISTRATION FORM if you already ran
this year. If you paid for the series, registration is in the front
room of the house. If you are paying race by race, we have a
number for you at the ‘single race registration’ table in the
2nd room. If you have not previously registered for the 2013-
2014 series, registration is also in the 2nd room.
Thanks for all the support we have re-
ceived and hope to see many of you at
the Shiver, either running or volunteering!
