Sure, we all know what a “selfie” is, right? It’s a photo of your-self taken with your own device. Well, in a few weeks millions of people across the country are going to be taking “skate self-ies,” pictures of themselves skating or at a skating rink!

Mark your calendars! On February 7th there will be a nation-wide internet flash mob using the hashtag #sk8selfie! Kelly McGough from Sparkles skating rink in Atlanta, Georgia, came up with the idea and is encouraging everyone to join in!

It’s easy to be a part of the fun. First, ask your mom or dad if it’s ok to do this. That’s important! Then, take a picture of yourself (a ‘selfie’) while skating or at the rink. Post it on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #sk8selfie.

There are no rules (other than asking your parents), so be as creative as you want with your “skate selfie.” The goal is to show millions of people on social media how much we love skating!

Did you know that Olympic speedskater Apollo Ohno first learned to roller skate on inline roller skates before trying ice skating? He trained early in his career on inline roller skates and still enjoys it! Now he encour-ages others to try roller skating!

Here’s Apollo training with Sunita Surya-vanshi, who won a Gold Medal in the Special Olympics in roller skating. Sunita has only one arm, but that did not stop her from becoming an Olympic cham-pion! See her incredible story HERE.

Japanese soccer star Shinji Kagawa, who plays for Manchester United in England, recently held a special ‘match’ against some undersized defenders. Kagawa had only himself and one person to pass to him, and defending him were fifty-five (55!) kids! Five were goalkeepers! He still scored! Watch the cool video HERE.
