Roleplaymethodology• Roleplayingallowsparticipantstopracticerepresentationofdifferentinterestgroupsconcerningthesamefacts.
• Roleplayscanbedesignedfordisputeresolutionwithinformalsettingssuchascourtsandtribunals,aswellassituationswherealternativedisputeresolutionmechanismsareemployed
• Alternativedisputeresolution,mechanismsinclude:directnegotiation,arbitration,conciliationandmediation

Roleplaymethodology• Roleplayscanbebasedonafictitiousscenario,withrolesallocatedaccordingtoassumedinterestgroups.
• Theycanalsobebasedonactualcases• Ortheycanbebasedonamixtureoffactcombinedwithfiction.Professorscanchoosebetweenthesetypes,dependingonwhattheyaretryingtoachieve,andwhateverismostappropriateinthecircumstances.

Roleplaymethodology• Inaroleplayexercise,eachgroupshouldbeaskedtorepresenta
differentsetofinterestswithinafactsituation.
• Ifitisamediationexercise,thesamegroupscanbeusedtorepresentthedifferentinterests,butwiththeadditionoftheuseofamediator.
• Ifitisanegotiationexercise,eachgroupcanbeaskedtonegotiatewiththeothergroupstoreacharesolution.
• Dependingonthelevelofexpertiseofstudents,thebasiclegalandpolicyissuesintheroleplayshouldbesetoutinwritingoronaPowerPointslide.
• Itcanbeusefultohaveamaporphotostohelpdescribethefact
situation

Roleplayinstructions– thehypothetical• Theparticipantswillbedividedinto6groups+mediators.• Today,readanddiscussthefactsituation.Begintoprepareyourpositions• Eachgroupshouldchooseareporterwhowilltakenotesonbehalfofthe
group,andbepreparedtosummarizediscussionsonawhiteboardoronacomputer.
• Eachgroupshouldchoosetwopeopletoleadthediscussionsandrepresenttheminthemediation.
• Eachparticipantisexpectedtotakesomepartinthediscussionsandnegotiations.
• Twoparticipantswillbechosenasmediatorstomediatetheprocess• Therole-playleaderswillbeavailableforclarificationsandinputduring
