Introduction to Tata Power-Mumbai Distribution

• Tata Power - Distribution is engaged in Retail Supply of Electricity across Mumbai License area in the western region of India.

• The total spread of the license area is around 485 sq. km. and houses a population of approximately 14.5 million

AMR system to manage large amount of meter data and perform effective analysis of load profiles, tamper events etc.

• The introduction of MDM in AMR has helped Tata Power for seamless integration of meters with billing system.

Use of MDM • MDM is the central repository for data collected from all consumer meters

covered under AMR.

• The MDM system maintains repository of meter data such as interval usage data, event logs , register data & outage history.

• The data of meters which could not be read through AMR system is uploaded manually in MDM through MRI.

• Processed data from MDM is fed to SAP ISU for monthly billing purpose.

A. Validation of Billing data

• In India, billing is done using meter register data. Meter register data is validated against the load profile data and is sent to billing system only if it passes validation.

• This ensures that billing data is accurate and helps improve consumer satisfaction.

• Validations like Gap Check ,Usage Tolerance, Low/high Usage Check , Register overflow check are being used.

B. Analysis of Meter events

• Meters record events including tamper events as per site conditions/operating conditions. The event report has been developed in MDM which provides list of meters that have recorded a particular event (Event wise meter list).

• A report is also configured to list all the events registered by a particular meter. (Meter wise event list).

• This analysis helps in early detection of meter abnormalities and to identify tamper and theft.

• The MDMS is also used to identify meters which have recorded energy even when premise has been declared inactive.

C. Asset management

• The load pattern/ trend of Distribution Transformers and Distribution Feeders are maintained in MDMS and analysed.

• This helps to rationalise loads on distribution transformers/feeders by transferring loads from over loaded to less loaded Transformers and feeders.

• Alternately, DTs are swapped as per their capacity to areas where they can be loaded optimally to reduce losses.

D. Identifying potential participants for DR

• Load profiles of high value consumers generated through MDMS are studied and compared with overall load profile of DISCOM.

E. Coincident peak demand for a group of meters

• The coincident maximum demand report for a group of meters under one distribution transformer / feeder and the load factor analysis report is used to understand the loading of distribution network.

• This helps to maximize asset utilization, improve outage planning, and reduce O&M cost.

• The consumption variation report of consumer meters is compared with concerned DT/Feeder consumption pattern.

G. Integration with Boundary Metering System (ABT)

• MDMS has been integrated with boundary metering system ( G<>T and T<>D ).

• The data of Main and Check boundary meters is compared in MDMS for each 15 minute interval to check healthiness of metering system.

• MDMS facilitates flow of boundary meter data to the Billing system and enables accurate calculation of distribution loss, AT&C loss, receiving station energy balance and feeder wise energy audit.

• The benchmarking feature of MDMS is used to define a consumption benchmark for different category of consumers and compare consumption of individual consumers with the benchmark.

• This helps in identifying the best and worst performing consumers vis-a-vis benchmark.

• This data is shared with concerned consumers to help them improve their behaviour.

I. Customer care module

• Using this module, we are providing consumption /load profiles to consumers through Tata Power customer portal.

• A “bill-to-date” functionality of the customer care module enables the consumers to estimate the bill at any time in the month based on consumption trend till date.

• Rate Analysis feature is used by the consumers to assess the impact of load shifting from one TOD slot to other through what – if analysis. This feature is used by the consumer to study the impact on cost by shifting loads to different TOD slots.

J. Green button data

• The customer care module is used to provide meter data in Green Button (GB) format to consumer.

• Consumer can download his meter data in GB format, to mobile apps or web apps available in the market, to get reports on his consumption / carbon footprint.

• Detailed Analysis if required can be done based on the GB data by different 3rd party vendors available globally.
