Peritoneal dialysis is one of the
treatment options for Chronic Kidney
Disease. Usually patients suffering
from Chronic Kidney Disease are
advised to go for peritoneal dialysis.
Since peritoneal dialysis is done at
home the role of caregiver in
peritoneal dialysis is very important.
The key role of a care giver in
peritoneal dialysis is to look after the
patient with respect to their health,
disease, treatment, emotional
wellbeing and so on. Usually the care
giver is adequately trained by the
nurse to carry out the entire procedure
of peritoneal dialysis at home.

Role Of Caregiver In Peritoneal Dialysis
Caregivers are very important in PD as
their unavailability or unwillingness
can make the doctor change the
modality of renal replacement therapy
to HD. The importance of caregivers in
the success of PD has been visibly
seen.5 Caregivers are often spouses
or may be other family members.
These patients are usually physically
and/or mentally unable to provide the
necessary treatment for themselves
and hence require a caregiver to take
major responsibility for their
treatment.

Role Of Caregiver In Peritoneal Dialysis
It is to be made sure that the patient and
the caregiver have been adequately
trained by the PD nurse or the doctor.
Remember that good training is an
essential prerequisite for good results
on the therapy. By the end of this
training, the patient and caregiver must
be very confident on the practical
aspects of PD.
Many factors are believed to be closely related to the success of therapy,
such as: caregiver’s commitment (top most) responsible and fully
compliant involvement with treatment; good relationship and
understanding between the health care team, the patient, and his/her
caregiver; family and social support; proper and adequate dietary
conditions; adequate personal and household hygiene.

Role Of Caregiver In Peritoneal Dialysis
Caregivers are the individual(s) who
during the course treatment are most
closely and passionately involved in
caring for the patient and thus helping the
patient cope with efficiently and therefore
manage his chronic illness effectively.
The caregiver burden increases
significantly as functional and cognitive
impairments set in. This limits the ability of
the patient to care for himself. Additional
factors associated with caregiver burden
include the relationship between caregiver
(and their career) and patient, behavioral
and psychological symptoms displayed by
the patient, gender and adverse life events.
