POSTURE • A speaker’s posture gives the audience a good

idea of his state of mind. Slouching and slumping makes you seem weak and ineffectual, and will cause the audience to lose interest in what you have to say.

• Your stance is also an important part of posture. Ideally you should stand with your feet apart, at about the length of your shoulders.

EYE CONTACT• Everyone knows that eye contact is equally important in

all face to face communication. When we look at Somebody’s face we focus primarily on his eyes and try to understand what he means. The eyes, along with eyebrows, eyelids and the size of pupils convey our innermost feelings.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS• Whatever we feel deep within ourselves is at

once reflected in the face. It is very much important in any face to face communication event. We convey a lot without speaking a word. Every facial muscle is an instrument of communication.

Effective body language supports the message and projects a strong image of the presenter. Audiences respond best to presenters whose bodies are alive and energetic. Audiences appreciate movement when it is meaningful and supportive of the message. The most effective movements are ones that reflect the presenter's personal investment in the message.

POINTS TO REMEMBER Never be up tied or stiff while making movements. Avoid body language that may be misunderstood or look

unprofessional. E.g. Winking A consistent eye contact is a positive sign and must be used Avoid fiddling with things around. It may distract the

attention

Each body part movement signifies something and helps in interpreting. E.g. Standing with hands on hips signifies aggressions, nodding signifies agreement and active listening, biting nails signifies nervousness.

Unlike emails, body language does not give time to think. Hence they must be used appropriately

Page 19: Role and importance of body language

Presenters who care deeply about their material tend to use their entire bodies to support the message.

When people don’t know whether to believe what they

are hearing or seeing, they go with the body language.
