Queensland Bushranger Information
James Alpin McPherson
(1842-23 August 1895) otherwise known as the Wild
Scotchman, was an Australian bushranger active in the
area around Gin Gin, Queensland in the 19th
Century.
He was born in Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Alpin went to a Brisbane school where his diligence
pleased teachers; he learnt some French and German,
and became a fluent and entertaining speaker.
Apprenticed to the builder, john Petrie, he attended the
Brisbane Mechanics’ school at night and achieved
prominence in its debating class.
McPherson was remanded for holding up the publican
near Bowen, where he was committed to the October
Assizes at Rockhampton. He escaped from the ship at
Mackay, stole a horse and began to rob mail coaches on
the roads between Maryborough, Gayndah and Gladstone, sometimes sending
stolen cheques to Governor Bowen. The government raised the price on
McPherson’s head to £250.
On 31st
March 1866 The Scotchman was waiting for the mailman near Gin Gin
Station when he was recognized by John Walsh who quickly organized an armed
party of four.
McPherson’s horse was too fatigued to outpace his pursuers and when they fired
he surrendered.
Aged 53, he died on 23rd
August 1895 at Burketown, north Queensland, survived
by his wife Elizabeth Annie, nee Hausfeldt, whom he had married in 1878 at
Blackall, and by four Sons and two Daughters.
Captain Starlight.
Henry Readford was born in
Cudgegong to a respectable
family. He originally operated
in his local area, but moved to
better cattle rustling territory in
Longreach Queensland.
Henry’s biggest feat was
stealing 1,000 head of cattle where they were over landed through largely
unexplored country, travelling along the Barcoo River and Cooper Creek as
well as the Strzelecki Track into South Australia. Renowned Cattle Duffer he
set out from “Bowen Downs” with about 1,000 head of stolen cattle. This
was a remarkable feat, given that the same journey led to the death of
explorers Burke and Wills just nine years before.
After his return to the east, Readford faced charges of cattle stealing, the
trial being held at Roma, Queensland. The jury returned a verdict of not
guilty, in 1881; several counts of horse stealing resulted in Readford being
jailed for eighteen months in Brisbane. After his release, he drove cattle
from the Atherton tableland to Dubbo. In 1883, on behalf of Macdonald,
Smith and Co., Readford drove the first mob of cattle to the Barkly Tableland
in the Northern Territory where he established Brunette Downs near Corella
Creek and settled down as the station manager.
In 1899 he became the manager of MacArthur River Station. He went on to
become a property manager, one of very few bushrangers who were able to
settle down into a respectable life thus ending one of the most daring
escapades in recent history.
