International Work Experience

China

Negotiated a five-year MOU between Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China and the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, OSU. Continuing to develop a student exchange program and an education abroad program (2018 – present).

Director, China Undergraduate Research Abroad Program; A cooperative program with the School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University and Guangxi Ecological Engineering Vocational and Technical Institute, Liuzhou, Guangxi. Created and led an annual program to Liuzhou where students participate in developing and executing research projects in eucalyptus, Chinese fir, and Masson pine forests, working with Chinese faculty and students. (2011 - 2015)

Received the Golden Silk Ball Award (2011) from the People’s Government of Guangxi Autonomous Region, P. R. China, for work and achievements attained in the development of Guangxi Province.

Chaired Technical Session 1: Biology & Medicine I. Conference on Biodiversity and Ecosystems, June 12-June 14, 2015. Suzhou, China.

Chaired the Forum on Green Economy and Eco-Civilization. BIT, Inc. 1st Annual International Conference of Emerging Industries. November 6-7, 2013. Shenzhen, China.

Provided a lecture series on Forest Carbon Sequestration and Forest Management in Guangxi Province. Lectures presented at Guangxi Ecological Engineering Vocational and Technical College, Guangxi Forest Research Institute, and College of Forestry at Guangxi University. May 9 – 17, 2007, and June 23 – July 1, 2009.

Hosted Visiting Scholars from Guangxi University and Guangxi Ecological Engineering Vocational and Technical Institute (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015, 2016)

Pacific Millennium Corp., Ltd., San Diego, CA and Hong Kong. Consulting activities both in US and Anhui Province, Peoples Republic of China. Collected growth and yield data, and soil data, to determine feasibility for the company to build a pulp mill in Anhui Province. Provided a final report and recommendations, including comparisons with data reported by Chinese government. Work activities from May 1992 – February 1994.

Russia University Partnership for Management and Economic Analysis of Forest

Resources and Products in the Tomsk Oblast, Russia. Served as Director of the joint program between The Ohio State University and Tomsk State University (2001 - 2006). Project funded by the College and University Partnership Program for the Newly Independent States of the Former Soviet Union Russian Federation, Humphrey Fellowships and Institutional Linkages Branch, Office of Global Educational Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Department of State, The United States of America. Project involved collaborative work with faculty in the Forestry Department at Tomsk State University, Tomsk, Russia, to develop economic opportunities in the forestry sector through education, technology, and research exchanges and collaboration; economic case studies of forest products enterprises were developed. A faculty exchange program with the Department of Forestry at Tomsk State University was conducted. Work activities from September 2001 – August 2006.

Director, Undergraduate Honors Program, School of Environment and Natural Resources, OSU. 1999 – 2015. Provided oversight for the Honors Program, including the awarding of scholarships in the School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Director, China Research Abroad Program. 2011 – 2015. Created, implemented and provided oversight for the undergraduate research program in south China, collaborating with Guangxi Eco-Engineering Vocational and Technical College, Liuzhou, Guangxi, China. I was responsible for all travel arrangements and itineraries, and all fiscal aspects. A total of 25 select students participated in the program over the five years of its existence. The program included a spring semester course in Chinese culture and research proposal development, three weeks of field data collection in south China, and a fall semester course in data analysis and final report writing.

2018 – Present Northeast Forestry University MOU Committee, Chair. Committee to develop a variety of programs in cooperation with Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China. Programs include 3+1+1 academic program, education abroad program and student exchange program.

2016 – Present Academic Affairs Committee, School of Environment and Natural Resources, as the forestry curriculum representative. Oversee changes and updates to curriculum within the School.

1999 – 2015 Director, Honors Program, School of Environment and Natural Resources. Responsible for administrating the SENR Honors Program, and evaluating scholarship applications. The committee made the final decisions on scholarships

2015 – 2016 Chair, Faculty Search Committee, Forest Economics tenure-track faculty position. School of Environment and Natural Resources. Responsible for refining the job announcement, advertising the position in all of the appropriate outlets, receiving and evaluating all applications, making phone calls to references, and scheduling interviews and establishing candidate itineraries. The search had to be conducted twice to find the successful candidate.

2013 Waterman Woodlot Management Planning committee. Wrote the management plan for the Waterman Woodlot that is used for outdoor laboratories for many classes. Worked with other faculty and staff from the School and other pertinent departments in writing up the management plan.

2010 Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife curriculum committee to revise and evaluate the curriculums for the change from quarters to semesters. Evaluated all courses for content and need for restructuring, establishing new curriculum goals, acquiring revised syllabi from all faculty, putting together the curriculum in a revised sequence to fit semesters.

2001 – 2002 Graduate Studies Committee, School of Natural Resources.

2001 Ad hoc committee to develop a proposal for combining forestry, fisheries, and wildlife curriculums. This committee was formed to develop new curricula by combining the separate curricula to take advantage of faculty and institutional resources, to make curricula more attractive and more useful to students.

2000 – 2001 Academic Affairs Committee, School of Natural Resources. Reviewed proposals for new courses and course changes within the School.

2018 – Present Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) faculty mentor. Guide students through an exploration of education-enhancing experiences, interact with students one-on-one and in groups, and provide advice and mentoring that will help students in their transition from student to globally- minded professionals.

2013 – Present Eminence Fellows Program and Scholarship Committee, University Honors and Scholars Program. Evaluated scholarship applications and conducted interviews of the top in-coming freshman for full-ride scholarships.
