Here we are mid May, which is deadline for me to write my Editorial our June issue. We have a big, big Memorial Day Weekend coming up, so we will report on that in the July issue, but we are sure that it will be a good one. Word from our friends is that the town will, once again be full. Really full. The town needs that, and deserves it, too! Just this month Rocky Point offered many events: Over Cinco de Mayo Weekend, we had over 50 people join us on our 32nd bi-annual Rocky Point Times El Golfo 4x4 Run - 3 days and two nights in El Golfo de Santa Clara, finishing up back in Puerto Peñasco with our ‘Survivors Dinner’ at La Casa del Capitan Restaurant on the top of Whale Hill. Thanks Cristina for your, as we all agreed, excellent service, GREAT Margaritas, and superb food! For many of the brave souls who joined us, the El Golfo Run had been on their bucket list for a while, and now they can scratch it off. Fun was had by all. What a great weekend! The next trip Sandy is planning for the 26th-27th-28th of October. So, if this has been on YOUR bucket list, make your plans now. Also, the same weekend, Peñasco had it’s first (as far as I can remember) Doggie Fashion Show over in the Mirador Area, at Paradise Beach Club where children and pets are always welcomed. Same weekend was the

Tequila & Mariachi Fest in Old Port. Then, on May 11th, Mark Mulligan (congrats, Mark, on your new baby girl!) swooped into town for a one-night-only performance, sponsored by SeaSide Reservations. And then there was the ever popular Chili-Cook-Off at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay.

Also in Cholla Bay was the final phase of the CBSC Annual Fishing Derby and the Fish Fry. The Mayan Resort held it’s 2nd Annual Uniting Nations Cup Golf with over 80 golfers from US and Mexico signed up to compete during the 4 day event. Las Conchas held their Annual Las Conchas Party (Sandy says, “Sorry”, for flubbing the date). Memorial Weekend the Rocky Point Riders 4th Annual Bikers Beach Fest was held, and the Puerto Peñasco Business EXPO was sold out in the Shrimp Plaza.

Before I give you some of the highlights for June, I have to WARN you, once again about following the speed limit. For those people who reported seeing my white Denali pick-up pulled over on the Peñasco/Sonoyta Hwy by four, count ‘em 4, black and whites...yes, that was me driving. I had just passed the car in front of me and, yes, I was going a bit over the limit and, yes, I was lucky and told to, “Slow it down”. The reason for the 4 units

was that the ‘first’ one just happened to be the Comandante, the Boss, and the other 3 pulled up to see who he had ‘caught’. Whoa! But seriously, we have been receiving many reports from travelers who say they have been stopped for ‘speeding’ through the town of Sonoyta, especially at

the south end as you come over the little knoll and must DROP TO 40km...NOT 40mph. So, once again, let me say FOLLOW THE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS (even if the locals don’t, and you seem to be holding up traffic), and NEVER PAY CASH TO A OFFICER ON THE STREET! It’s not only

in Mexico where you must be vigilant about the speed limits. Why, Ajo and Gila Bend have slow sections, and last week for the first time ever, Sandy and I saw a Sheriff unit tucked back in the Mesquites and Palo Verdes at the Border Patrol Checkpoint, south of Why, AZ, where the signs tell you to drop

from 65, down to 55, 45, 35, 25, and finally 15 mph. After Sandy posted the sighting on our Rocky Point Times Facebook Page, we found out that we were way behind the times. Many people had already seen, and experienced the sting of a speeding ticket in the areas around the Checkpoints.

Ok, on to two huge events one planned for June, and one for July: The June ‘biggie, is RCPM-Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers will be back in Rocky Point for 3 big days! Friday, June 8th, at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay for “A Hot Dog and A Smile”, Saturday, June 9th, at Wrecked at the Reef (new venue) for the big concert, and Sunday, the 10th back at JJ’s Cantina for Bloody Mary’s at the Mañanathon. For information and tickets go to www.azpeacemakers.com. The new event planned for July will be the 1st Annual Las Vegas Night sponsored by the Sonoran Resorts and the City of Puerto Peñasco. The date is July 7th.

17 historical tidbits you might not know about Rocky Point

Did you know?

1. The city was founded officially in 1928, although unofficially for centuries before many humans traveled here and called it home.

2. Inhabitants of Rocky Point were once referred to “as people in the sand”. In 1698 Padre Kino created this name for the early settlers.

3. Whale Hill and parts known as old town had rock caves and flesh eating creatures. According to research compiled by a Brown family history page, what we know as Whale Hill was once a beacon, a landmark reaching out in the middle of the sea attracting traveling tribesman and other nomadic tribes. Native Americans, specifically the Hohokam Indians from Arizona are said to have journeyed down to the sea for trade, salt, and fresh fish as well as many other adventurous wanderers. One historical document describes very early visitors practicing cannibalism. I like to think, luckily, the sweetness of the Rocky Point shrimp helped changed that.

4. In 1826 Lieutenant William Hale Hardy, a retired official from the Royal Naval English Army visited Peñasco and charted the hill in present day Old Town as Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco). Shortly after, Spanish charts referred to the hill as Punta Peñasco.

5. The Al Capone connection- yes, the notorious mobster Al Capone visited Rocky Point. His excursions to Rocky Point, have been cited in several historical sources. Go try a slice of pie at Capone’s pizza place and ask for the history or stop by La Roca hotel in Old Port and talk to the owner. He will give you the facts, a few stories and if your lucky enough (or if you book a night at the hotel) he might just give you the tour. During prohibition Al Capone and numerous prominent friends gambled, drank and partied the night away in Puerto Peñasco. You can even

stay where they partied. Check out some prohibition gangster history while in town. Just goes to show, even a guy from Chicago back in the late 1920’s knew a good thing when he found it.

6. Rocky Point’s first airline service was Scenic Airlines. In the 1920’s and 1930’s an American, John Stone established an airline called Scenic Airlines offering direct flights from Tucson and Phoenix. ( hmm…sounds like a man before his time. Where are you now Scenic Airlines?)

7. Americans traveled to Mexico to drink alcohol in 1920’s. John Stone, who owned Hotel Cornelia in Ajo, Arizona journeyed down the road and built a hotel with gambling and of course alcohol, attracting American tourists who were not legally allowed to drink in the USA. ( history does repeat itself)

8. At one time there was a movie theatre in Peñasco. It was located in an old building in Old Port. It’s been a long time since movies graced a big screen in town; most forget, and long for the entertainment of film. Soon to open, a 6 plex in the new Portomio complex located by the harbor on your way to old port. (If you happen to know the exact location of the old theatre please email [email protected].)

9. Major railroad was built by the Mexican government in 1930’s. It wasn’t until 1936 that Rocky Point had another opportunity to develop. Mexico President Lazaro Cardenas started the process of building a railroad connecting the area to central Mexico with a major railroad and sea port at Rocky Point.

10. World War II history documents the United States military paved the road from Lukeville to Rocky Point, with the intention of completing a port for military use. The American port was never completed.

11. In 1941 the village had approximately 187 residents.

12. Puerto Peñasco separated from Caborca and elected their first mayor in 1952.

13. Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, joined fellow space mates Alan Shepard and Buzz Aldrin and practiced moon walking for their upcoming Apollo 14 spaceflight at the Pinacate Biosphere. The terrain was discovered to be the closest resemblance to the moon. Follow in their footsteps and take a tour or hike at the Pinacate Biosphere Visitors Center. (the center is located 27 miles north of town, on the way in from the Lukeville border)

14. Cholla Bay did not have electricity until 2000. What? How did they see? Guess they used the brilliant stars to guide them. Some had solar others had

generators. Not too many blowdryers or microwaves were used at night.

15. In the boom of 2005, 2006 Sylvester Stallone with a group of investors looked into buying property in Sandy Beach and Golfer Tom Lehman checked out the master plan of Sandy Beach Resorts.

16. 14 years ago you couldn’t own property as a US citizen. There were 99 year leases and other type of arrangements, but in the mid to late 1990’s the fideicomiso, what we know as a bank trust was available to serve as the legal instrument for non Mexican citizens to purchase property ( my look how far we have come in such a short time).

17. In 1999 you could ride an ATV from Playa Bonita resort to the Reef campground and not pass any high rises. It was a long empty piece of sand until the Princesa was started in 1999 and completed in 2000. Now over 44 multi level towers (count ‘em) and a housing community take up the majority of the once empty beach and skyline. WOW all that in less than 12 years!

It’s valuable and interesting to look back to the future. Puerto Peñasco is relatively a very young town compared to other historical cities in Mexico, its only just begun and has a bright future ahead. Still a young teenager navigating it’s adolescent years, it’s teenage angst struggling with gossip, the up and down of growth spurts and fitting in with the crowd. Peñasco has no colonial walls or haciendas from 300 years ago, but what it does have is dedicated residents and business marking their place in history.

Think of it as the young soul of the Sea of Cortez. The exciting news is, just like a typical teenager, we all have the opportunity to see her grow and come into her own.

In researching history of beach towns, you inevitably run across the tale of one’s grandfather, having the opportunity to buy beach front property in some beach town perhaps it was Newport Beach, California in the 70’s where dirt roads connected the neighbors and not all areas had electricity. Beach shacks were everywhere. Or Cabo San Lucas, when trailer parks once stood and the roads were dirt with no airport. No matter where you look back in time especially at beachfront property, a similar story of what was then, will surface. It’s the principle of supply and demand. They’re not making any more of it. Charming sea-towns like Puerto Peñasco are rare. Puerto Peñasco or Rocky Point, whatever you like to call it, is still in its teenage years, it’s nice to look back at the short historical moments...but I can hardly wait for the future. To quote a song…The futures so bright I got to wear shades.

Anita Kaltenbaugh lived in Rocky Point as a single woman by herself for 2 years, has driven hundreds of time solo across the border from Phoenix to Puerto Peñasco and has only dozens of stories to tell you about all the good incidents and wonderful folks who call

Puerto Peñasco home. Her friends and family have trips planned for April, May and June of 2012. Check it out for yourself before buying into the media blitz.

DID YOU KNOW?

(City of Puerto Peñasco Press Release, May 2012)

The connectivity between commercial flights for Hermosillo, Las Vegas and Puerto Peñasco with Aero Mexico will, hopefully, soon become a reality for visitors wishing to come here to enjoy the natural beauty that it is offered here in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora Mexico. This is what our Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro sustained in a meeting with the Executive Director of the airline, Sergio Alonso Allard Barroso, and Juan Nicolas Rhoads Fontanot who is the Director of Commercial Planning. Accompanied by the Coordinator of Tourism Encouragement in Sonora, Javier Tapia Camou, and also from the OCV (Tourism) offices, Hector Vazquez, our Mayor stated that he is very grateful that the flights will be now coming to our International Airport Mar de Cortez.

Javier Tapia Camou said that Aero México has plans to extend their reach, and are considering this tourist destination as an opportunity to connect Rocky Point with Hermosillo and Las Vegas. They are now working on analyzing the project and, in about a week, they should have a concrete answer. They explained that they are looking for commercial flight connections, apart from the charter flights we now have coming in, and hoping this idea will come to fruition, benefiting the city of Rocky Point with a great flow of tourism, both national and international, and boosting the economy. They (city officials), are currently working with various charter companies such as “VivaAerobus” to also have charter flights, beginning this summer, from Ciudad Juarez.

Mayor Zepeda Munro pointed out the City’s interest and ambition to support this great measure, to be able to meet the criteria to have these types of flights for this city. They have agreed to work diligently with government officials, in a coordinated manner, to make this a reality for our tourists and visitors.

I t all began in 1994 with the first hi-rise development in town, Plaza Las Glorias Hotel & Condos (now Peñasco del Sol & Condominiums Pinacate). After that, it was Princesa de Peñasco in 1998, Sonoran

Spa in 2000, and Sonoran Sea in 2002. Miguel Guevara was the Project Director and Mary Snyder the Sales Director, for these 4 resorts. They were all completed, sold out, turned over to the homeowners, and are currently managed and rented as some of Peñasco’s favorites.

With 7 additional rental properties popping up on Sandy Beach, the Guevara/Snyder development team decided the town was ready for a unique project that did not allow rentals. So in 2004, Guevara joint ventured with Carlos Saenz, who owned and operated Palmar RV Park for many years. In 2005, the RV park came down, with constuction and sales beginning for Puerta Privada. The project was sold out, completed and delivered by 2007. Combining past experience, reputation, and proven track record, Puerta Privada continues to be the leader in setting

the standard for quality construction, design, and finishes.

The project consists of two towers that run directly parallel to the water, providing 180 degree views of the ocean to the south, and golf course views to the north, from every single condo. They are

quite spacious with the 2 bedroom units just under 2000 sq ft and the 3 bedroom units at 2750 sq ft. Marble floors, beveled cut glass, granite countertops, reverse osmosis water/ice, stainless appliances and dual pane windows are just some of the features that come standard in all of the units.

The common areas include 2 negative edge pools, one heated and the other Olympic lap length, 2 hot tubs, u n d e r g r o u n d parking, pet park, basketball, and lighted tennis court.

The 3 story amenity building, fabulously detailed with carved cantera stone, features a state of the art fitness center (with resident personal trainer), a game room loaded with air hockey, pool table, shuffleboard, foos ball, darts, and touch screen video game computers.

The top floor clubhouse is beautifully furnished with full kitchen and bar areas, plasma TV’s, BBQ’s poker tables and fireplace.

This is where the true heart of Puerta Privada begins. It’s not just a project but a home away from home, with a family feel. Most of the owners have condos in other developments, or businesses in town. Why do they prefer Privada? Due to the non rental policy, (long term leases ARE allowed), there is such a community atmosphere, since everyone knows their neighbor, and they are all there for the same reason. Every month there are events, golf or tennis tournaments, art shows, holiday parties with bands, etc. Or the last minute, everyonebring-something-to-share, get togethers at the pool or clubhouse. Many of the owners have said that they have made some of the best friendships here, which will last a lifetime.

Almost all of the current HOA board members, including the p r e s i d e n t and resort a d m i n i s t r a t o r, have served on other boards in Peñasco. This e x p e r i e n c e , coupled with the lack of rental, which causes wear and tear, allows Puerta Privada to maintain some the lowest HOA monthly fees on the beach.

This unique project has it all…quality, reputation, privacy and, in today’s market, the opportunity to take advantage of some terrific, resale opportunities. Visit the “Privada Lifestyle” and experience it for yourself. You’ll be glad you did!! For pressure free information, the furnished model on Sandy Beach is open 7 days a week, 9AM-5PM or checkout the website at www.PuertaPrivada.com.

Got a ? for Cap’n Greg? Email to [email protected] or send to RPTimes: PO Box 887, Lukeville, AZ 85341

Spring break, the Easter week festivities and filling out tax forms must have burned out everyone in April, because Cap’n Greg didn’t get any questions for May. So I decided to manufacture some editorial content.

On a recent Wednesday afternoon, thirst overcame common sense—again—and I met my good friend Frank for a cool refreshment at Capone’s. (Rufus didn’t get to ride on Frank’s golf cart and that was one perturbed pup.)

Anyway, Frank and I talked about how Peñasco has changed over the years, and that most of those changes have been good. For example, just recently El Greco’s Greek Restaurant has given us another choice for dining, and the Sam’s Club now being built will be a future shopping option. Workers are removing the sunken remains of the Fiesta Cruiser from the harbor entrance, and with that old rust bucket out of circulation, there will probably be more and better boats available for the sunset cruise experience.

I never thought much about it, but Frank says bars have it tougher than other businesses in Rocky Point because they depend not only on spring break and holiday crowds, but also on patrons who live here full time. I recently stopped in on brothers Luis and Carlos, and local entrepreneur Joel, who were hard at work resurrecting the Sunset Cantina across from the Peñasco del Sol hotel. They told me the Cantina is being reborn as a place to enjoy life in the slow lane. Besides drink specials and a killer view from the upper deck, they say they are working with El Greco’s downstairs and Filibertos down the street so their customers can have food to accompany their libations. Also, there was talk about bringing back the regular dart tournaments that drew locals to the Cantina for so many years.

As much as he’d like another glass of Indio, Frank says he has to go or Rufus will be jealous. We’ll meet again soon. In the meantime, I think I’ll head on over to the Sunset Cantina and see what’s up. Maybe enjoy some olives and feta cheese from El Greco’s. When it comes to Rocky Point, there are so many choices, yet so little time. Let’s try to enjoy them all, amigos. And amigas, too.

And of course, the city of Puerto Peñasco and all of our friends including Mario Lopez, Dr. Socorro Ruiz, Jesus, Edith - our new veterinarian and the dog catchers who were busy at work prepping and providing after-care for the animals.

WHY SPAY/NEUTER?The single most important thing that

we can do to save cats and dogs from all the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes is to spay and neuter them. Spaying and neutering are

routine, affordable surgeries that can prevent thousands of animals from being born, only to suffer and struggle to survive on the streets, be abused by cruel or neglectful people, or be euthanized in animal shelters for lack of a loving home. Spaying and neutering makes a big difference: Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens!

Sterilized animals live longer, happier lives. Spaying eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat periods, eliminates the risk of uterine cancer, and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight, prevents testicular cancer, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Altered animals are less

likely to contract deadly, contagious diseases, such as feline AIDS and feline leukemia, that are spread through bodily fluids. Puerto Peñasco has low-cost or free spay-and-neuter clinics that make it easy for everyone to do the right thing and have their animals sterilized. Call (011-52-638) 388-5152 at

the city or call Nancy at (011-52-638) 383-1012 to find the next low-cost spay-and-neuter clinic.

Spay-and-Neuter FAQsWill my animal›s personality change

after spaying or neutering?Spaying and neutering will only

reduce or eliminate the behaviors that you don›t want, such as aggression and urine marking. Neutered males are less likely to roam, fight, or mark their territory with urine, and spayed females experience less

hormone-related moodiness. In exchange, your companions will likely become more interested in you (rather than finding a mate) and will still protect your family.

Why should I have my male cat or dog neutered?

Male animals contribute to the companion animal overpopulation crisis even more than females do. Just one unsterilized male animal can impregnate dozens of females, creating dozens upon dozens of unwanted offspring. Neutering

also eliminates male animals› risk of testicular cancer and reduces unwanted behaviors such as biting.

Is sterilization safe?Spay and neuter surgeries

are the most commonly performed animal surgeries. Most animals experience

relatively little discomfort (anesthesia is used during surgery, and pain medication is generally given afterward) and are back to their normal activities within a day or two.

“BROADY” OUR PUP OF THE MONTHBroady was found by Anita from

Giuseppis one morning on her way to work at Sandy Beach. I received her call about 7AM that morning. Broady had been hit by a car and Anita was crying hysterically. Broady had been at Chochoys for over a week when I picked him up yesterday. His leg and hip were badly injured. With pins in his leg and hip we are hopeful that Broady will make a complete recover here at the center.

Donations are needed for Broady’s care here at the center. He will need several months of care for his injuries to completely heal. Broady is only about 4 months old so his chances are good.

We are seeing more puppies being dropped off and need your help. If you are a rescue or are interested in fostering puppies or kittens until our Adoption day please call Mario at the city 388 5152 or Nancy at AACORP (011-52-638) 383 1012. We need ALL rescues to step up and help.

NEEDSWe have been at this same location

now for 11 years. This is the only site that we have in Mexico. We are a 501©3 non-profit US corporation and your donations are tax deductible. Please help with a tax deductible monthly or one time donation. You can also donate through Paypal on our web site www.rpaac.org/donate or mail checks made out to AACORP. PO Box 1031, Lukeville AZ 85341. Our biggest needs this month - $$ for medicine, medical treatment and to purchase food. With summer just around the corner we could use dog beds. Costco has great dog beds for only $25 and the dogs love them . You can also order the above ground Kuranda dog beds direct from our web site. –THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HELP.

Other needs are bleach, laundry soap and Downy ,Disinfectant, antibacterial waterless hand soap, paper towels, all sizes of trash bags, small and medium collars, canned cat and kitten food, cat litter, cat litter pans with tops for the cat pan liners and of course dry cat , puppy and dog food dry and canned.

Our feeders and water containers are getting old and starting to crack. We like the 2 ½ gallon size for both food and water. These can be found at Petco and Petsmart. We have about 8 – 10 feeding stations at any given time (outside) and two inside for the kittens and puppies. We also need the smaller feeders for the babies in the kennels – one quart size for food and water.

If you have a vehicle to donate and need a tax deduction please call Nancy at (602) 412 3932 or in Mexico (011-52-638) 383-1012. We are in dire need of an SUV to transport animals and supplies.

ShadowShe was grandpa’s shadow when she

was young and always begged him to take her to Puerto Peñasco with him when he went fishing with his buddies. Alas, he never did, declaring it a “men only” trip and not suitable for little girls. Eventually, in 1975 she did come to visit and see what this beach was all about. Her parents were coming here quite frequently.

Handsome strangerActually as she tells me, her mom

never met a stranger. One day when her parents were on the beach, her mother heard a Mexican speaking English so she struck up a conversation with him. He was a well known musician and living between Mexico City and Los Angeles. He was here at the beach to vacation with his daughters and to visit his sister. Over time her parents and the musician visited many times on their trips here and she told her daughter what a wonderful man she thought he was.

MatchmakerSomewhere along the line mom,

you remember the one who never met a stranger, decided that these two, now-single parents, were a good match and when he mentioned that he was coming to Arizona to bring his daughters to visit the Grand Canyon, mom saw her opportunity. She explained he would have to come through Wickenburg, where she and family lived, to get to the Grand Canyon (which if you live in Arizona, you know is not true!) So anyway, he did visit them and mom tried to get her daughter to go on the trip with him and act as their guide – but she didn’t.

HistorySix months after his trip to Arizona,

he called her for a date, came to Arizona to take her out and this time she went. The second date was in Puerto Peñasco. I can’t let this go by, without telling you about that second date. She came to town with her parents and they were dressed very casually, she said she was wearing levi’s and tennis shoes. Upon arriving she found that he and his family were going to the Black and White Ball and invited her family to come, no one seemed to mind how they were dressed. Needless to say she and her family had no idea what the Black and White Ball was, so after arriving dressed as she was, it was a little surreal.

In spite of that, they had a wonderful time and partied (as we tend to do in Peñasco) until the wee hours of the morning. That is the story of how Iva met Armando and as they say, the rest is history. Three months later they were married and decided to live in Puerto Peñasco.

The LighthouseTheir first plan was to build a small

hotel on their property on Whale Hill next to Casa de Capitan, but they decided that would not provide a place for Armando to play his well known jazz music, so the Lighthouse Restaurant came to be. It opened in February of 1998 and I and a group of 12 friends were there the first week. I didn’t know Iva and Armando at that time but am so happy to have gotten to know them since.

Family AffairIva has sons, one of whom, Mark,

works with them at the Lighthouse. Armando has daughters and they have a son, Armando, Jr. who, like his dad is also a local musician. His band “Reband” is a very popular local group. They play at the Lighthouse Friday and Saturday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm and then start at the new Thunder on the Beach (at the old waterfront Portofino location on the Malecon) at 10:00 pm.

I encourage you to visit this great local restaurant and experience the spectacular views of Puerto Peñasco and, of course, our phenomenal sunsets. Be sure to have their very special Mexican Coffee with your desert. I’ve included a couple of photos of a local women’s group, Las Mariposas, who came to the Lighthouse for their recent fund raiser pajama party and brunch. Iva is always happy to arrange

special group events so give her call when that need arises for you and do enjoy the Lighthouse, a piece of the Puerto Peñasco paradise.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, July the 7th! It will be a great night of Las Vegas style fun at the Sonoran Sky Beach Front Condominium Resort to benefit the city’s municipal charity, DIF. Try your hand at Black Jack, Poker and Roulette to build on the $300 in chips you get with each ticket. Tickets are just $30 U.S. each, or two for $50. There will be food and a cash bar, too! Use your winnings to bid on dozens of gifts that will be on display throughout the night and available after the gambling is over!

All this fun, all these great prizes and every penny of the ticket sales will go to facilitate the City of Puerto Peñasco municipal office on Integral Family Development (D.I.F.), an important subsistence program for local needy families now in its 35th year of helping children and parents in need through various activities.

Current DIF president, Mrs. Marcela Albelaiz de Zepeda, wife of Mayor Alejandro Muñoz Zepeda, has directed

the organization through phenomenal growth for the last three years and her work continues through the Las Vegas Night for Charity event.

The U.S. citizens who love and visit this beautiful beach town have always been pleased, even eager, to help the local charities because they do so much for those in need. We’re hoping you will be motivated to assist on July 7th, and this time be able to help yourself to some great prizes donated by the local businesses. Even if you’re not sure if you can make to the event, be assured that 100% of each ticket price will go directly to DIF with your name on it. You can purchase tickets at any Sonoran Resorts Sales Office, or you can purchase them on line by visiting www.sonoranresorts.mx/LasVegas .

If you own a business in Puerto Peñasco, please consider donating a prize for the auction by contacting Jim Ringquist, Director of Sales at [email protected], or calling his office at (602) 476-7511. Locally, his cell number is (044-638) 105-9357.

There had been talk of opening another public beach for about a year, but when the City of Puerto Peñasco decided it was time to move, the project came together in record speed.

Almost overnight, it seemed, the parking area, palapas, and soccer field was constructed, and the people followed. I drove through this past weekend and the beach was full of people enjoying the sun, sand, and ocean.

Although our city is surrounded by beaches, and all beaches in Mexico are public domain, there are still several beaches that have limited or no access to the public due to private developments and subdivisions blocking the most direct access. Now, we all have one more public beach with easy access, ample parking, and palapas for shade.

You access Mi Playa Beach by going down Fremont (the road towards Los Conchas) and turning South about 1/2 way between Sinaloa and Josepha Ortiz de Dominguez. You can’t miss the big “Mi Playa” signs like the one shown here.

My son Zack and I recently sat down for breakfast at Max’s Café with John McBride. He, along with his wife Max, has owned and operated Max’s Café for the last 13 years. Max’s has always had a great following for breakfast and lunch with people coming from all over for their chilaquiles and expresso drinks. But the talk of the town of late is their amazing dinners. The dinners vary from chateaubriand to thin crust pizzas, but the best thing about Max’s dinners is, not only are they top shelf, but the prices are equally attractive which helps us all in these tougher times. Heck, you only live once, tell them Marco said you owe it to yourself, so use the savings on a large extra glass of vino!

Zack and I had the pleasure of ordering our breakfast from Perla. We tried the flapjacks and sesame bagel topped with

egg whites, tomatoes and onions. Perla has been a long time waitress at Max’s and is always there to greet you and serve you with a smile. She

concocted some really cool hot chocolate drinks for us on the expresso machine. Great work Perla! And the food was muy BUENO! Max’s has indoor seating at various tables, indoor bar seating and outdoor patio seating accompanied by a fire pit. They offer free phone service to America and free WIFI and internet service. While I was there, I logged onto their WIFI and caught up on some American emails until I realized, isn’t this why I am here?! So, off went the computer and emails, ahhhhh, relaxation, Mexico!!! Max’s also offers a full bar and has an amazing Bloody Mary, which they claim has13 ingredients…I would tend to say 14...you have to include VIBE...as the place has a cool vibe to it.

Max’s always has specials each day but hugely popular is Thursday and Sunday night as they offer ½ price chicken wings. So, if you are into wings that come in 8 different flavors and are looking for a bargain, Max’s would be a great place to check out. The restaurant is open EVERYDAY. Around 7:30 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Max’s has live music playing a wide variety of American and Mexican classics. Max’s is located off of Calle 13 on Paseo Las Glorias across from the Peñasco del Sol Hotel. So, please check out Max’s Café and say. “Hi”, to John and Perla and the whole gang. Tell them Marco sent you for one of the best Bloody Mary’s in town!

Best wishes to all for a super June 2012! Always remember to live in the present moment. Yesterday is gone...it’s history! Tomorrow has not arrived. NOW is here for you to enjoy. Look around you NOW

and soak up life. It is your gift to yourself EVERY day. So, treat yourself to another beautiful day…and hopefully, your treat is another relaxing day right here in Mexico’s best beach, our very own Rocky Point!!! ADIOS AMIGOS and see you at the beach!

YOU MUST FILE AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT!If you feel you have been wronged by an officer(s), you MUST make an official complaint so that the police department can take action. If they have no record of the incident, then they have no proof. Telling your friends and complaining to others will not get the problem solved - it only creates more problems and allows the officer to go on “doing business as usual”. File a complaint and save others the same grief you have gone through and make our city a better place.

PETS

Only domestic animals (dogs & cats) are permitted into Mexico and you are allowed only two (2) animals per vehicle. You need to carry a copy of your pet’s current rabies vaccination certificate as you may be asked for it as you cross the border.Mexico has many stray animals roaming the streets so please keep an eye on your pet. Many pets are lost in Rocky Point each year due to unfamiliar surroundings and firework noise. If your animal is lost while visiting Rocky Point, we have found the best thing to do is scour the area where he/she was last seen. You can also pass out flyers to taxi drivers and water truck delivery men and post them all over town. Putting an announcement on the local AM and FM radio stations are also a good idea. Be sure you have a collar and tag on your animal as well as a current photo.

Contrary to popular belief, your pet is not welcome at most establishments, especially where food is served. Please check with the staff before bringing your pet inside as the business can be fined for health violations.

TRAVEL BEYOND THE FREE ZONE

Puerto Peñasco is located in the Free Zone, where you do not need vehicle/tourist visas to visit. If you plan to travel beyond the Free Zone you will need the following: FMT (personal tourist visa) and your vehicle permit if you plan to drive.

Personal Visa (FMT)Available at the Immigration Office in Sonoyta, on your right as you cross the border. They are open from 8:00 AM until Midnight. You will need to bring your birth certificate and/or valid driver’s license. You can either park on the U.S. side and walk across or you can go through the border and park. You will need to show your ID and fill out the necessary paperwork (it is in English and Spanish). Once you have filled out the paperwork you will take it over to Banca Serfin, pay approx. $195 pesos (per person) and return to the office to give them a copy. At this time you cannot obtain your FMT in Peñasco, but the Immigration office can

stamp your FM3 or FM2 for travel beyond the free zone. If you are flying into the airport you can obtain your FMT when you arrive at the Peñasco airport. By law, anyone who stays in Mexico for more than 72 hours, is required to have an FMT, whether you stay within the Free Zone or not.

Automobile VisaIf you plan to drive beyond the State of Sonora, you will need to obtain a permit for your vehicle. The cost for this permit is approx. $290 pesos. This can be done in Sonoyta or at the checkpoint outside of Guaymas. You will need the original and 3 copies of: • Registration, Title and the valid driver’s license of the vehicle owner• Credit card in the vehicle owner’s name• FMT, FM3, FM2, Passport or birth certificate• Leasing contract (if the vehicle is rented or leased), which must be in the name of the person importing the vehicle. If the vehicle belongs to a company, the papers certifying the employee works for the company. If you do not have a credit card you can post a bond payable to the Federal Treasury issued by an authorized bonding company in Mexico. As an alternative to posting bond you may make a cash deposit at Banco del Ejercito in an amount equal to the value according to the “Table of Vehicle Values for Bonding Companies.”At Banco del Ejercito your credit card will be charged approx. $30 USD. A cash deposit will also be accepted if you do not have a credit card. Your deposit plus any interest will be returned to you when you leave Mexico. You may choose to obtain a bond through an authorized Mexican bonding company located at all border crossings. The bonding company also assess taxes and processing costs for this service. The vehicle permit is good for 6 months and for any type of vehicle weighing under 3 tons. When departing Mexico, and if you are not planning to drive the vehicle back into Mexico, the permit must be canceled with Customs. If your car is found in Mexico, beyond the Free Zone, and beyond the authorized time, or without the appropriate papers, it will be confiscated.Always carry the importation permit with you when driving your vehicle into Mexico. Take it with you when you exit the vehicle - do not leave this document in your car. Make a copy and leave a copy in the car - same with your insurance. The sale, abandonment or use of the vehicle for financial gain, a criminal act, etc. will result in its confiscation. The vehicle may be driven by the spouse or adult children as long as they have the same immigration status. It is a good idea to get a notarized document, if you are driving a vehicle beyond the free zone that is not registered in your name, nor the owner is in the vehicle. It should simply state that the owner has given you permission to drive the vehicle, you may want to include the make, model, year, color and VIN number.

FIREARMS & DRUGS

Firearms, illegal drugs and ammunition are NOT allowed into Mexico. Hunters may bring their firearm with the proper paperwork/clearance. Possession carries a pentalty of 5 to 30 years.

IMPORTING

You may import up to $1,000 USD in new merchandise per vehicle without the assistance of a Customs Broker. To declare items you are bringing into Mexico, turn left as you cross the border, just beyond the chainlink fence. Park in the designated spot and go into the Aduana Building in the middle of the two lanes. See Crossing the Border for more information on declaring merchandise. If your merchandise totals more than $1,000 USD per vehicle, you will need the assistance of a customs broker. Customs brokers are located on the Mexican side of the border. Park on the U.S. side and walk across to one of their offices.

Jonni Francis / Realty Executive

Press Release May 2012

The journey to Rocky Point began in 1999, when I initially relocated to Puerto Peñasco with the idea of selling real estate. This was the first of yet another

major change in my career path, which led to securing the franchise with Coldwell Banker Affiliates de Mexico in 2002. This proved to be a success story for me personally, as well as for those agents who joined the company.

For the past 10 years, my business relationship with Coldwell Banker Affiliates has been more than supportive, and an image I was proud to present.

The time has come to renew my contractual agreement with the Affiliates. The decision has been made not to renew my franchise agreement with Coldwell Banker Affiliates de Mexico as another opportunity has presented itself.

The great team of professionals you have come to know will move with me to Realty Executives - including: Larry Rebling, Monroe Riddle, Morley Shaw, Romeo Torres, Brad Henderson, Eddie Benavidez and Gregg Hayes.

In 2011, those real estate agents listed in the Rocky Point Top 5 include John Witt (Broker for Realty Executives), Dan Monroe, Brad Henderson, Eddie Benavidez and myself.

Combining the professional experience of the Top Producers, at one company, creates a powerful, tenured real estate team dedicated to servicing your real estate needs.

Our business location and phone numbers will not change. The only change will be to the signage:

We look forward to seeing you here in Puerto Peñasco or speaking with you about the tremendous real estate opportunities along Sonora’s Gold Coast.

Sincerely,Jonni FrancisRealty Executives

If You Think Good People Are Hard To Find, Meet Mark

and Barb Olszewski!

At first blush one could get the idea that our little paradise by the sea is bubbling over with charitable organizations. Taking a closer look, however, reveals that there is very little duplication of effort and a whole lot of cooperative endeavor toward providing for all the needy citizens of this deserving community.

As with any volunteer effort, or any effort for that matter, the effectiveness of reaching goals is directly related to the motivation of those who are willing to take massive, immediate action to get stuff done.

Mark and Barb Olszewski who moved to Rocky Point nearly two decades ago from Tempe, Arizona and who are known and appreciated by dozens of charitable organizations and thousands of local citizens—kids and parents alike.

Their good natured good will is contagious. Their energy is awe-inspiring. Their ability to fulfill the wish lists of myriad charities is downright enviable. Plus they have consistently provided the wide variety of school supplies and equipment for the 10 schools and nearly 2,500 students in the “Adopt a Class Room” charity they personally founded in 2003.(http://www.rockypointclassroom.com )

Their ingenious approach to solving specific challenges and needs of the various charities is surely what has endeared them to so many worthy organizations in the community. They’ve secured wheel chairs for La Montaña School for special needs kids; wheel chairs, walkers and canes for the D.I.F. (The official government organization to assist needy families); cash, clothing and toys for Esperanza Para Los Niños home for underprivileged children; and food for the indispensible “2 Fish Ministry” that serves over 70,000 meals to the needy each month.

In 2007, Mark and Barb got involved helping La Esperanza Para Nueva Vida (Hope for New Life) Assistance Center,

the all-volunteer n e i g h b o r h o o d social assistance o r g a n i z a t i o n founded eight years ago by Harold and Kathy Tuttle and Robert and Pamela Martin. ( h t t p : / / w w w .

laesperanzaparanuevavida.mex.tl)Blanca Estela Soto Ayala, a licensed

Physical Therapist in her parallel life, has been the energetic visionary and volunteer Director and President of the organization since the beginning. She’s grateful to Mark and Barb for their help in raising thousands of dollars to build the basketball courts and two additional buildings to the center. This has enabled them to provide classes teaching sewing, haircutting and cooking as well as computer skills on computers donated through the efforts of Mark and Barb.

Between the two of them, Mark and Barb have developed dozens of contacts in the U.S. and Mexico such as the Tuttles, Martins and AIM, who have provided truckloads of school supplies to their “Adopt A Class Room” program; as well as 2-4,000 pounds of fresh vegetables that are bagged and distributed through the neighborhoods each month.

They have raised thousands of dollars with creative fundraising activities such as Barb’s Rubber Ducky Race where they dumped 1500 numbered rubber duckies into the Sea of Cortez and gave out hundreds of donated

prizes as the tide brought them back to the beach.

Mark, an avid swimmer, Certified Dive Master and underwater v i d e o g r a p h e r , once raised several thousand dollars by swimming from the Old Port to The

Reef—yes, you read that correctly! He has also been Santa Claus to literally

thousands of kids throughout Puerto Peñasco and known to ride his unique miniature Harley Davidson through the neighborhoods dressed as Santa to the amazement of children all around.

These are but a few of the amazing feats accomplished by this unassuming couple. As if these weren’t enough they have just begun another major charitable endeavor to provide food for the thousands of residents here who have been caught in the economic crash from the tourism downturn.

Shortly after relocating to Rocky Point and looking for ways to expend their energies, Mark was helping in the opening of a then newly redecorated Margarita Villa as well as working as Dive Master aboard the popular “Island Explorer”. Barb found herself managing the local Dive Shop.

It wasn’t long afterward that they launched Rocky Point Boat Charters (http://www.beachseasun.com ) which led to many long term relationships both locally and throughout Arizona, California and other states.

One of those relationships was established with famed Arizona Republic writer Arthur G. Sloane (red cap in photo) who was just beginning his Rocky Point

Tour series to raise money for veterans with special needs. He and Barb hit it off right away and she worked as his destination operator for several years. His tour participants would even bring school supplies with them for the Adopt a Classroom program.

Mark, Barb and Arthur along with Sandy O’Hare of the Rocky Point Times are once again working together, this time to collect food for the needy in our fair town. The food drive began on April 24th and will run through June 8th. Arthur Sloane announced the drive in his column in the Republic on April 25th. If you can possibly contribute to this worthy cause, there are several ways to do so. If you’re not planning to be in Rocky Point during the drive, you can call Arthur Sloane at 480-802-6810 and arrange to drop your donation by his home.

If you plan to be in Rocky Point between now and June 8th, you can call Mark and Barb before you leave home on their Phoenix telephone number at 602-324-9529, or from your land line in Rocky Point to 383-4963. If you know where the Rocky Point Times office is, you can always drop your non-perishable food items off there. There should be more drop-off points added in the near future and we will be sure to keep you advised. As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated by everyone involved in this important food drive, especially Mark and Barb Olszewski, who will even come by and pick up any food items you’ve brought down to Rocky Point with you. Just give them a call.

You’re not in a conversation with this pair long before you notice something missing: the absence of negativity. It’s made even more obvious by the abundance of enthusiasm with which they approach everything they do, indeed, even their philosophy on life and their faith in humanity.

“Why are we here on God’s earth if not to help our fellow man in need.” says Mark, who grew up 100 miles south of Chicago in the small town of La Salle-Peru. “My Dad taught me to look at others’ needs before my own; to help them until they can help themselves. Then they will know how to help others when they can.”

Barb is from the same philosophical mold, raised in a part of Missouri so rural the family mail box was seven miles from home! “We always helped others,” Barb confides, “living that far from nowhere, it was second nature!”

If you think good people are hard to find, talk to these folks. They are good people!

TURN ON, TUNE INAND DROP DOWN

Turn on to the Earth’s energy, Tune in to your body, and Drop down into the sea.By Rosarie Salerno

The Earth is electrically charged, known to electricians as ground; the Earth naturally produces electrons. Electrons can possibly be the most effective antioxidants. Recent “Earthing” research has shown that the body responds to the electrical charge from the Earth. You can see and feel this electron energy, vividly demonstrated by lightning. When an electrical system is installed in a building, the electrician grounds the wiring into the earth; so too is our body grounded to the earth, when we are not insulated against the current. Electrical wiring is insulated by a coating of non-conductive material like plastic to inhibit its electrical effects. So do asphalt, plastic or rubber soled shoes, wood, and sealed concrete inhibit your body from being grounded. Our ancestors, and currently some 3rd world countries, walked barefoot and were in contact with the natural electrified surface of the Earth.

When a part of the body is injured in any way, such as from a bump, pathogens or toxins, the immune system responds, sending white blood cells to the injury; the inflammatory responsekicks in and begins the healing process. This response sends free radicals to the injured tissue, breaking apart the damaged cells so that healthy cells can move in and repair the injury. Unfortunately, healthy tissue is also attacked by the free radicals; the surrounding area also becomes inflamed. The inflammatory response manifests itself in five ways as: pain, redness, heat, loss of motion, and swelling.

Through hundreds of thousands of scientific researches, chronic inflammation has been linked with chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, kidney disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, allergies, asthma, and cancer. The body can naturally stop the inflammatory response, but sometimes it doesn’t; that’s when it becomes chronic. Interestingly, 30 years ago there were 4 known autoimmune diseases, today there are 90, and more are being identified.

It is believed that inflammation is a consequence caused by insufficient electrons in the body. Electrons are negative and free radicals are positive, automatically neutralizing each other. The earth’s natural energy produces negative electrons that are absorbed, distributed and stored in the body tissue; ready for use. That is, if the energy can conduct into the bio-electrical organism, namely us. Research has shown that the electrons thin the blood, thereby reducing the viscosity of the blood through the vessels and arteries, reducing cardiovascular disease, the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

For absorption, the most sensitive part of the body is located in the foot, known as K1 in acupuncture, the ball of the foot. This acupuncture point is connected to all of the meridians and can send the electrons throughout the body. Kidney 1 is believed to be a major energy vortex having the ability to positively stimulate the body, mind, and spirit. If the ball of the foot can connect with the earth’s energy, for even 20 minutes, it may have a noticeable effect on the inflammation and the pain associated with it.

99.9% of the molecules in our bodies are water. Many people are dehydrated. Hydration is extremely important to the conductivity of the electrons. Our bodies are naturally made up of seawater; it is recognized that seawater is highly conductive of electricity, as is wet grass, and to a lesser extent arid land. Ideally walking barefoot in the sea or even on sea-wet sand will send electrons up through the foot and revitalize you. Injured and inflamed parts of the body may be immersed, as well. Some say they can feel the energy as a tingling from the sea water. People have reported that they can feel stress draining out of their bodies, the reduction of inflammation and pain, and better sleeping. Barefoot means no water shoes, flip flops, rubber- or plasticized-soled shoes.

Earthing is an enhancement to health; earthing is not medicine or a substitute for medical treatment. Earthing is safe, natural and free.

If you need any legal assistance or advice either in real estate transactions or in other investments in Mexico, please do not hesitate to contact us at (602) 266-0225,

or at [email protected] A. Tapia

Salazar International Advisors. Attorney at Law Licensed in Mexico with a Masters Degree in International Trade Law for the University of Arizona.

By Miguel A. Tapia

In real estate transactions, as in any other transactions, the majority of the time the problems arise when trying to short-cut the process in an effort to save some money, short cuts that ironically ends up costing more.

In a real estate transaction usually the parties that intervene are the legal counsel of the seller, the legal counsel of the buyer, the real estate agent, the Notary Public, the Appraiser, and in certain circumstances, a tax expert when there are issues of possible capital gains. As a principle or rule of thumb, all of these parties are strongly recommended to have in a closing, as all of them fulfill a very specific and important role.

The goal of a real estate transaction not only to have a smooth transaction, but also to have a secure one as well, one that brings as an end result the security of the seller in getting paid without having any tax issues, and the security of the buyer´s investment.

I often see transactions where seller and buyer do not have a legal counsel and as a consequence they rely solely on the Notary Public and the help of the real estate agent, and such professionals end up fulfilling such roles even after they have recommended that seller and buyer hire the services of a legal counsel to represent their interests.

I have great friends that are Notary Publics and have many friends that are real estate agents, and I strongly believe that when seller and buyer totally rely on them to conduct the closing, not only are they putting a burden on such professionals to perform actions that are not their responsibility, especially if something happens to go wrong with the title, the tax basis of the transaction, an issue with the legal representation, an issue with the legal description of the property, etc., but more importantly, they are putting a burden on themselves by risking the security of the transaction, or its appropriateness.

I have also seen transactions where seller and buyer do not get the Notary Public involved, and thus although money change hands in terms of purchase price, the transactions remains for years

in a private contract, which of course is not registered.

In my opinion the role of a real estate agent is to coordinate the sale or purchase of a real estate, and in doing so gather as much information as it can regarding such property, as well as gathering the appropriate information from seller and buyer as needed to have the closing, and of course more than anything, to provide its expertise as to the physical condition of the property in terms of functionality and quality.

The role of the Notary Public is the formalization of the deed that will contain the title by which seller will transfer ownership to the buyer. In other words, the deed that will ultimately get registered in the Public Registry. Without the Notary Public such transactions cannot be deemed as formalized according to Mexican Law. However, the Notary Public is an impartial party and does not represent the seller nor the buyer, and is not responsible to perform a throughout due diligence on the property, or the chain of title to the property, nor is he responsible for providing legal advice to the seller or the buyer in terms of the appropriate value to be used at the closing, which in itself could create a tax issue in the future.

The role of the legal counsel is basically to provide proper due diligence as to the chain of title and determine the legal status of the property, determine the appropriateness of the legal representation of the parties when executing the formalization of the deed, and provide legal advice as to any tax issues that may arise either at the closing or perhaps in the future.

When each party fulfills its role professionally and with a high standard of ethics, the transactions usually go smooth and are, most of the time, secure for seller and buyer.

Keep in mind that you do need to have all of such parties involved in order to carry out a proper real estate transaction (Real Estate Agent, Notary Public, Legal Counsel, Appraiser and in some cases the Tax Expert), as each one of them perform very important tasks that are needed for a pleasant and secure transaction, and in choosing them do your homework.

Do I need my own legal counsel for a closing? Is the notary public necessary or even

sufficient?

MareBlu Turns Two!By Dave & Debby Penn

Normally we write about the off-road racing in and around Rocky Point, but this time we were asked to check out the celebration at MareBlu Risorante on Sandy Beach next to the Reef. What a joy this experience was! Owner Julio Valenzuela and manager Ernesto make all who arrive welcome and appreciated. At the door, the hostess, Melissa, greets everyone with a beautiful smile and escorts you to the table of your choice, inside or out on the patio. The unobstructed view of the ocean is at its best from any seat.

The bartender, Ignacio aka “Nacho” learned his trade in the U.S. I don’t think you could ask for a drink he doesn’t know how to make.

The waiters are Alfredo, Miguel, Alan, Ernesto, Valentine and Jorge. What an energetic group these guys are. All have matching uniforms and look very professional.

The Chef, Victor Gutierrez was sous Chef for the Iron Chef winner in 2011. Now, Miguel Angel Morales is the sous chef in this highly organized kitchen.

My meal was Chicken Marsala, smothered in mushrooms, herbs and spices with a side of penne pasta.

Debby had Blackened Mahi Mahi and Shrimp over a bed of vegetables with rigatoni pasta. The green salad to start with was on a chilled plate with Italian Balsamic dressing. The entrée was served on a heated plate and beautifully presented. Everything was delicious and very memorable! How we managed to eat a slice of birthday cake after all this seems impossible, but it was so good! They home - make all their pasta, breads and desserts. The bread was served with an interesting tomato based whipped butter, unbelievably good!

We spoke to several diners, including Harriet & Michael from the Phoenix area,

about their meal. “We’re thrilled with the food here, excellent flounder and lobster dishes.” They visit Rocky Point two or three times a year and are very glad this restaurant is here and open.

Do you have some food allergies or special diet requests? Afraid to try something for fear you’ll have a reaction? It’s not a problem here! Just ask the chef to address your issue and he will create a meal to your ease and enjoyment.

We spoke to two couples who said the food here compared to the best in Boston, where they were from. They showed us one dish that MareBlu created for them, just how they wanted it. They really appreciate the special service.

Herber & Paulina, supply the music with Herber on the piano, guitar and vocals and Paulina singing. We heard easy listening popular songs from

the past from groups like the Beatles, Eagles & BeeGees. Great background music while dining.

If you are still with us, you are probably thinking this place is expensive, what with white tablecloths and cloth napkins, but you’d be wrong! The most expensive meal on the menu is $20.00! All others are less and the prices include the tax. Along with cash, Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Another couple of things we were impressed with; all the waiters were proficient in English, and they make everyone feel comfortable and right at home.

It is worth the drive. Come out on Sandy Beach next to the Reef and be pleasantly surprised, like we were. We are going back for sure.

They are open daily 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Reservations (011-52-638) 383-0605. See their ad in the Rocky Point Times. Visit their web site at www.mareblurockypoint.com.

On April 13, 2012 CBSC Horseshoe Tournament Chairman, Billie Carnes and Tammy Hicks presented the Puerto Penasco Cruz Roja with a donation from the 5th Annual Horseshoe Tournament that was held on March 24, 2012 in Cholla Bay.

At the tournament when Neil Mellon and Frank Sedlak came up to receive their 2nd Place Prize Money, they stunned us all by stating that they would like to have their winnings added to the donation to Cruz Roja! Therefore, we make that donation in their behalf as well! Thanks so much Neil & Frank - you guys are awesome!

The Red Cross (Cruz Roja) is the charity chosen by the Cholla Bay Sportsmens Club Horseshoe Tournament Committee. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament are donated to them each year. They do such an awesome job taking care of everyone and we love to be able to give back to them! Thank you Cruz Roja for the wonderful job you do! Another portion of the proceeds go towards maintaining the Marine Band Radio Base Station for the boaters safety on the Sea of Cortez. We have this radio monitored 24 hours a day! Without this, you wouldn’t be able to call for help when you’re out on the water.

On another note, the CBSC Horseshoe Tournament would

like to inform everyone that we had made an error in listing our Sponsors for this years tournament! We are deeply sorry and want everyone to know that ROGER CLYNE & THE PEACEMAKERS along with THE ROCKY POINT TIMES NEWSPAPER were also Sponsors of our tournament! Roger Clyne made a very generous donation of several of their CD’s for raffle prizes! I KNOW the winners loved them too! The Rocky Point Times Newspaper ALWAYS supports our event and does a GREAT job creating the Advertisements for the Tournament! Plus, they actually include my articles in the paper! Sandy, Tom and their staff do an impossible job of keeping EVERYONE informed of what’s happening in our part of paradise! A BIG THANK YOU to Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers AND The Rocky Point Times Newspaper!! I PROMISE to NOT make any errors next year (ok – I’ll do my best – I am human after all)! Everyone PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!! In these tough economic times, we need to help each other out!! We hope to see you all next year in the Bay!!

T h e AZUL Bar, p o o l s i d e /lounge bar at Bella Sirena R e s o r t ( f o r m e r l y SWIM), had

their Grand Opening celebration last month, right after the HOA meeting at the Resort. The lucky owners present, along with guests Fausto Soto and Rosie Glover, were treated to an array Chef Luca’s (owner, Pane e Vino) fabulous food. The AZUL, will be run by

Karina Ortiz, Chef Luca’s wife, and Chef Luca will open his new restaurant at the Resort, soon. The food served at the event was a wonderful selection, including; Zucchini quiche lorraine, P i z z a (Sardinara), P o t a t o croquettes, Meatbal ls , A s s o r t e d c h e e s e s , S a l a m i , Marinated ar t ichoke, Mozzarella caprese, Sun-dried tomatoes, Salatini with puff pastry, Hard broiled eggs stuffed with tuna, Roasted bell pepper, and Tinga mini tostadas (Shredder chicken with chipotle). Oh my, your mouth watering, yet? Speaking from a personal standpoint, we can hardly wait for Chef Luca to open at the Bella

Sirena Resort. We are assuming (Uh Oh, you know what that means) that Chef Luca will retain his “PANE E VINO” name for his new restaurant, since he now has such a great following. We will let you know, as soon as we know.

I thought that I would take a few photos of ongoing projects each month for awhile to keep you up to speed with the progress. Some projects seem to be moving along more quickly than others but I’ll just post the pictures and let you be the judge. Here are some very recent photos:

Fiesta Cruiser. As you can see, they are slowly taking this old heap apart. Since it’s just outside the port, hopefully they will mark it well when it’s below the waterline for safety.

The Convention Center is moving right along. Every day there is a small army of people working on it and they seem determined to complete it in record time.

Sam’s Club is making great progress as well. They say that it will be open in June and they have been selling memberships at Bodega Aurrera (Walmart). BTW, USA memberships will be honored here.

The Cineplex is moving a little slower but it is moving. It was projected to open in April and that didn’t happen, but they are working on it and making progress. Better late than never, and I know that a lot of people are looking forward to its completion.

By Gretchen Corpe Ellinger

In 1992, after a 300 mile drive from north-central Arizona, I parked near the Viña del Mar in Old Port, and stepped from the car. A long panoramic look at the Sea of Cortez, the fish markets, the palm trees along the sidewalk, the little stores selling souvenirs and a few genuine handcrafts, the few restaurants, bars and hotels…I was enchanted! It was love at first sight! I knew I would live here some day. After a long weekend in Paradise, I was sooo sorry when the time came to depart – we had eaten well, experienced warm Mexican hospitality, dipped in the Sea, shopped a bit, but I knew we had only scratched the surface, and there was so much left to see, do, and learn.

After years of looking and learning, I fell in love all over again, this time with Cholla Bay. A property “with potential” jumped into my life, and weekends and vacations over several years turned my little piece of Paradise into a home. Construction was a new kind of adventure and, despite the inevitable ups and downs, my home turned out beautifully – well enough to become Casa Monica Cholla Bay Bed & Breakfast, which has been very good to me, allowing me to meet and get to know interesting people from all over the world who somehow find their way to Puerto Peñasco.

Many of them fall in love, too, and come back over and over, or find their own little pieces of Paradise.

Nearly ten years of living in Puerto Peñasco, and visits to other cities in Mexico, plus two long road trips – one all the way to Cancun and back, the other with a Mexican family to the state of Jalisco – has slowed me down, helped me to appreciate the rich and varied culture of Mexico, and allowed me to make many friends, some of whom are “redirected northerners” like me, while others are Mexicans who patiently help me to learn their language and customs. I have fallen into what I hope is a long love affair with Mexico.

Our city has so much to offer, and we all have our favorite things to do, see, visit, eat. Over the years I have written about restaurants, stores, craftsmen, interesting people, and more that I enjoy, but I have only scratched the surface! I think I know Puerto Peñasco / Rocky Point well, then someone raves about a place of which I have never even heard! What is your favorite in our city? It could be a beach, an activity, a restaurant, a food, a store, a view, a character, a service, a doctor, a restaurant…please share! Email me at [email protected], and tell me your favorite and why you love it. I will “share the love” in future issues.

Born and raised in the historic Arizona border town of Douglas, Tony Ballesteros began his interest in photography in Douglas High School while taking printing class and serving as the school printer

of the weekly Douglas High newspaper. Not satisfied with the photos being taken for the paper, rather than complain, the determined young Tony found a Brownie and started taking the photos himself with amazing success that began his life-long love and career in photography.

Tony joined the Navy in 1971 and took advantage of every relocation they chose for him to advance his skills as a photographer—from landscapes and people studies to bald eagles, crab boats, sea otters, whales…”and a lot of snow shots” in Alaska.

After the Navy, and 15 years as a Special Olympics coach, Tony returned to Douglas in 1992 and opened an antique store. This allowed him to actively buy, sell and collect cameras of all types as he continued to seriously advance his photography skills.

Tony discovered Puerto Peñasco in the mid-eighties, and knew then where he was going to live when he retired. He would travel to this quiet, pleasant little beach town every chance he got and camp on the beach. In fact, his favorite camping spot on Sandy Beach was right where the Sonoran Spa and Sonoran Sea Resort Condominiums were built! This was destiny to Tony and he purchased one of the first units sold at the Sonoran Spa, and has lived here full time since 2005.

With his gregarious, fun personality and eclectic curiosity and interests, Tony has never met a stranger and has become a respected link with the workers, visitors, businesses and residents of this small community by the sea, all the while building his reputation as an accomplished photographer. He’s come a long way from the Brownie he used in high school.

Since the first digital cameras, Tony has surged with the technology, now on his third Sony, the latest 24.3 megapixel SLR 650A that can fire 10 frames a second through a powerful telephoto zoom lens that makes most admirers astoundingly ask, “How’d he get that shot?”

In March of this year, Tony’s one of a kind photo entitled “Save the Dolphin” won the Sonoran Resorts “Why I Love Rocky Point” photo contest grand prize out of over 200 entries and over 7,000 votes.

You’ll find Tony’s photos hanging in the lobby of the Sonoran Spa and, along with his collection of rare corals and shells, available for purchase at most of the local craft and art shows at Tony’s “Timeless Treasures” exhibits.

FIRST AID

Scorpion StingsFirst aid for any scorpion sting should involve cooling the wound, which allows the body to more easily break down the molecular structure of the venom. Cooling also reduces pain. Use ice or cool running water if available. On a warm night, a wet compress will help. Keep the victim calm and still. Panic and activity speed up the venom’s spread. Symptoms may include heavy sweating, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, loss of bowel control, jerky muscular reflexes, and respiratory distress. These serious signs are cause for quick evacuation to a medical facility. Antitoxins are available in many areas where dangerous scorpions live. The doctors, clinics and Red Cross are experts at treating stings.

Snake BitesYes! We do have snakes in Puerto Peñasco. Not usually found in city areas. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, or any other kind of venmous snake, seek medical attention immediately. Anti-venom is available here in Peñasco.

JellyfishThey are usually bright blue and are present in our waters during June, July and August, although they are sometimes hard to see because of the clarity of the water. Some years we have a few, and other years we have tons. In some beach communities, you will find far less than others. A good test to see if they are present, is to look along the tidelines for any that have washed ashore - if they’re up there then there’s a pretty good chance they’re in the water. Use caution when walking barefoot on the beach or digging through the sand with your hands, they can still sting you (I know from experience). If you are stung, get to a doctor or the Red Cross immediately for treatment.

Stingray StingsOur Rocky Point doctors, clinics and Red Cross are well adept at treating stings. The best way to avoid a sting is by doing the “stingray shuffle!” To avoid stepping on a ray, shuffle your feet slowly as you move through the surf to scare the rays away. Round stingrays are very good at burying in the sand and will remain buried even as you approach. By shuffling your feet you will brush against them and they will scurry away. If you walk through the water as you normally do you will most likely step square on the back of them which causes their barbed tail to come up and sting you. Be extra careful in area where the sediment is silty/sand or where the water is particularly warm.

What do you do if you get stung by a ray? Get out of the water and head to the nearest doctor. If you are stranded out where these facilities are not available follow these steps and seek medical attention as soon as you can. First, let the wound bleed - this will allow any toxins entered with the barb to get out. Next, immerse the wound in hot water, as hot as the patient can stand for approximately 45 minutes: This denatures the protein toxin and relieves a majority of the pain. Then treat wound as any other puncture wound or cut, keep clean and bandage: This reduces the chance of infection, promotes healing. If pain or bleeding persists, if wound is large or if patient shows signs of an allergic reaction, see a doctor immediately! If you are staying at a resort go to the desk or convenience store - they may have a first aid kit with a treatment.

FISHING & BOATING

PERSONAL WATERCRAFTYou do not need to obtain a boat permit for your persona watercraft. However, if you plan to fish from your boat, each person fishing must have a fishing license which can be purchased here in Puerto Peñasco. As with vehicles, it is a good idea to carry two copies of your title and registration for your watercraft and trailer. DO NOT BRING THE ORIGINALS! One copy should be kept on your boat/watercraft and the other shoud be carried on your person or put in a safe location during your stay.

FISHING PERMITSYou MUST have a fishing license for everyone onboard a boat, even if they are not fishing, permits are checked. You do not need a permit if you are fishing from the shore. Permits can be obtained locally at the Capitania de Puerto, M-F, 8AM to 3PM or at the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix.

Fishing Permit Rates (approx.) PesosDaily - $106.00; Weekly - $220.00

Monthly - $315.00; Yearly - $410.00

CHARTERS

Many charter boats and pangas are available for hire by the hour/half-day/day, or organized trip. We do not have any companies that rent boats for your personal use. Charter boats are located all over town and at the docks and on your way into Old Port (right hand side) as well as at Safe Marina and in Cholla Bay. Reputable charters are always the best choice. Please make sure there is enough safety gear on the boat for all persons in your party and that the captain has a marine radio in the event of an emergency.

“CALL USA” BLUE PHONESTHEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE!

To make a long distance call, your best bet is to find a cafe or internet cafe with a VOIP phone. Second best is to purchase a prepaid phone card (LADATEL) from pharmacies or businesses, and use one of the many pay phones along the streets - follow the instructions on the phone. You can also use one of the long distance (larga distancia) calling services located around town.

U.S. CALLING CARDSIf you use your calling card and dial an 800#, that is not toll free within Mexico, you will be charged twice for this call - 1 charge for calling the 800 #, and then a 2nd charge on your phone card. You may also use one of the long distance services to call the U.S. and Canada.

You cannot dial a U.S. 800# fromyour Mexican cellular phone.

The only U.S. cell carrier, we have found to work in Rocky Point 96% of the time, is AT&T’s International Plan. All services work - SMS, MMS, Blackberry, etc. Follow the instructions (left) for dialing the U.S. or Canada, and to dial a land line. To dial a cell phone, you may have to dial 044 + 638 + 7-digit number, or you may just need to drop the 044. Sometimes, when calling a local cell, I had to dial as if I were dialing a cell from the U.S.Check plans and where you spend the most time. TelCel’s Blackberry plan is much cheaper than AT&T’s, plus they have a reasonable International Plan for when I travel to the U.S. You can also get an unlocked phone, buy a SIM card, and switch chips as you cross the border. Mexico cell carriers are supposed to start fingerprinting everyone who purchases a cell phone or SIM card.

Around noon on Saturday, May 5 along, Sandy Beach, a colorful array of sails guided 14 catamarans into position for the annual Spring Fun Sailfest put on by Multihull Fleet 42 of Phoenix, the only open-class multihull sailing club in the Southwestern region. They also have a Laser Fleet, and in actuality welcome any other small monohull sailboats as well.

In their own words, “Everyone is Welcome in Fleet 42!” Learn more about this active sailing club at: www.fleet42.org .

The club holds two events in Rocky Point

each year. The next one is a two day racing regatta in October when they hold long distance triangle races on Saturday and shorter triangle races on Sunday.

The lengths of the catamarans in this two day Fun Sailfest ranged from mostly 16 footers, a few 18’s and a couple of the faster 20 foot sailboats requiring a crew of at least three sailors. Here are a couple of photos of these colorful vessels in various positioning maneuvers during the beginning heat of the triangle regatta on Saturday.

By Gretchen Ellinger

Great news on facility development! We are making good progress developing our expanded dog rescue facility. Thanks to some concerned and generous dog lovers, we have been able to purchase and have installed over 400 feet of good 8 ft. tall chain link fencing, enough to fence in the basic facility. We have lots of space for the facility and now have a master development plan.

The newly fenced area will surround the existing building and be subdivided into several large living areas. In keeping with our basic philosophy, dogs will live in large open yards with shelters where they will be safe and can run and play. Crates for transport only and kennel runs only for medical reasons. We will now be able to isolate new rescues from the general population to prevent the spread of contagious diseases and provide several segregated living areas. New dogs in isolation will have a health exam and whatever treatment required (and they ALL require treatment!) before being introduced to the general population. The new multiple areas will permit us to classify each dog and introduce it to a compatible living group. All dogs don’t get along with each other!!

The Parvo epidemic seems to have abated and, thanks to a donation from another generous friend, we are vaccinating as many dogs as possible. The City vaccinates for Rabies but not Parvo, so it hits the homeless dogs very hard.

Needless to say we are very excited that we are making progress toward providing better care for the many sick and malnourished homeless and abandoned dogs that come to us almost every day. Virtually every dog that comes to Barb’s Dog Rescue requires veterinary care, some more serious than others. Our

vet bills have amounted to thousands of dollars over the past year and with the new expanded facility, those expenses are sure to grow. You don’t have to look far to see the heart breaking need in Puerto Peñasco.

These Mexican dogs make the most amazing and loyal family pets. Not only do you have the gratification of knowing your care and concern gives them a life, you will soon realize that you have a new loving family member. Adoptive families of our rescues have shared incredible and heartwarming stories about their pets and most would never consider any other dog as a family member.

If you are a person who believes, as we do, that these homeless and unwanted dogs deserve better, please help them. We are in constant need of the basics; food, vitamins, collars, leashes, veterinary medicines and of course money. You can be assured that every donation will be used for these dogs.

We are also having a special fund drive to enable us to move ahead with facility development. Next we will be running water lines to the new areas, installing a new larger water tank and a water pump, plus upgrading the electrical system. Shelters and shade need to be installed for protection from the summer sun.

Please stop by and visit Barb’s Dog Rescue, say hello to the dogs and see the progress of our new facility. We are open to visitors almost every day from 9AM to 7PM. As you enter Peñasco from Sonoyta, about 8 miles north of town, you

can see two signs, one on each side of the highway marking the road to the rescue: DOG RESCUE, Need Food and Barb’s Dog Rescue.

You can also drop off your donation at Twin Dolphins Real Estate office on Blvd. Fremont, next to the Cruz Roja (Red Cross). Please call with questions or to arrange a visit. Call Barb at local cellulars (044-638) 114-1659 or Dee at (044-638) 384-0113. When calling from the States, you can call Twin Dolphins office at (602) 324-7241.

BARB’S DOG RESCUE NEWS LETTER“Help Us Help Them”

Three years ago, Puerto Peñasco opened its doors to iSPEAK Rocky Point, a language school teaching English to the locals of Puerto Peñasco. Today, iSpeak continues to be the # 1 option to learn not only English but Spanish too. Spanish classes are available on a daily basis and English classes are taught even on Saturday mornings from 9am to 2pm. Classes are available at all levels.

The diversity of the school’s classes, schedules, and plans of study have been a great “plus” for both Mexican and American students. Just meet with Isabel or Victor and they will schedule you according to your needs. Locals can learn English through both their revolutionary system TALL and a teacher, or, using a full-time teacher where interactive classes and activities provide a relaxing, fun ambiance to learners.

Spanish classes have been very successful and a great tool for those Americans living permanently, temporarily or simply visiting Rocky Point on the weekends.

How about learning Spanish “on the scene”? That’s what iSpeak offers you! You will learn how to order your favorite meal with your teacher sitting at the table with you in a restaurant. You will learn real life situations in class. Students are involved

in a variety of communicative activities, practicing the performance of tasks. You will practice one-on-one conversations where your ability to perform tasks in Spanish is assessed with feedback, and goals set for continual progress.

iSpeak is offering Spanish Immersion courses for those Americans in town for just a week. Learn how to communicate with the locals when you go shopping, to the bank, the gas station, etc.

iSpeak has always emphasized that language is developed through dialogues. Many language instruction techniques are based around grammar principles; however research in second language acquisition over the past three decades shows that focusing instruction on learning grammatical forms does not lead to fluency in real language use.

It is with this proven model and their teaching experience that the residents of Puerto Peñasco now have the opportunity to excel in their lives and careers. Those who are bilingual have a huge advantage in obtaining higher positions in their jobs along with better salaries.

iSpeak is the only Testing Center in Puerto Peñasco authorized by BYU to get a Certification in English.

LEARN WITH THE BEST!!! For information contact Isabel or Victor at the iSpeak office at the corner of Melchor Ocampo and Vicente Guerrero in Puerto Peñasco, by phone at (011-52-638) 388-8202, or by email: [email protected].

iSpeak Rocky Point, still the #1 option to learn English and

Spanish in Puerto Peñasco

Here is an article that I ran across regarding cruise ships in Mexico. Although it doesn’t specifically mention our city’s future port, it is still very good news overall. Our day is coming and we’ll get our share of the cruisers in the future.

In defense of that statement, in the very recent news was another story about Sonoran Governor Guillermo Padrés reaffirming the fact the our very own home port is coming in the near future. They were talking about it on the radio this morning as well. It seems that it is very close. My own opinion is that they are saving a big announcement to be used for impact prior to the elections in July. Here is a link to that article:

http://www.uniradionoticias.com/noticias/articulo112765.html. It is in Spanish so if you don’t read Spanish, you may want to copy/paste it into a translator program such ashttp://translate.google.com/.

Here is the article that I was originally referring to:

Article written by: Sean O’Neal 23 March 2012

As reported in the Wall Street Journal this week, Mexico has retained the coveted position of top cruise ship destination in the world! Additionally, there was a 7.1 percent growth in the cruise industry in Mexico. More than 5 million people on 1,800 ships arrived to the Land of the Sun via its picturesque ports. That adds to more

than half of a billion dollars to Mexico’s economy in jobs and revenue!

It is absolutely no wonder then that Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE: CCL) whose company commands around 49% of the global cruise industry, have recommitted to Mexico.

In a huge move and a true boon to both Playa del Carmen real estate and Puerto Aventuras real estate, Carnival Corporation, the British and American company, have just signed a pact to invest $150 million in port infrastructure in Calica, which is 6 miles from Playa del Carmen and just 7 miles north of the quaint seaside community of Puerto Aventuras.

The pact was signed on the beautiful island of Cozumel between Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, and Gerard Cahill, President and CEO of Carnival, and witnessed by none other than Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

According to Calderon, tourism wages are more than 30 percent higher than the average job in Mexico. And the tourism industry employs more women than any other industry.

President Calderón also emphasized the federal governments ambitious goal of becoming the fifth-most-visited country in the world by 2015.

“For this reason, I congratulate Carnival and I recognize the significance of the decision that Carnival made to invest in our country,” Calderón said.

This rapidly growing organization was created after seeing the desperate need families were faced with when the U.S. economy declined, heavily impacting Mexico, and the peso dropped dramatically. As a result, jobs vanished, more people became homeless and could no longer afford to feed their families. Pastor Stan Tedrow shared his burden to feed the hungry with his congregation, and two feeding sites were born on February 24, 2009 with more being added since then. Currently, citizens can receive a hot meal at Fountain of Life Mission in Colonia San Rafael and at Arizona Taco Place on Constitucion and at Aquiles Serdan across from Hotel Paraiso del Desierto on Constitucion.

Letters to EditorI love the RP Times and the valuable information

you provide each month. Anyone that owns property in Rocky Point needs to stay current on the activities and infrastructure improvements that will affect the long term value of our investments.

Neal

Do you know where La Cubanita (Art) moved to? If not, please tell me where a good bakery is...

Barbara Bahrenburg Rock

Hi Sandy. Do we need a passport to get into Puerto Peñasco now?

Debbie Michelle Napier

Hola Debbie. You need a passport to get back into the USA. It is a US law.

Hi Rocky Point Times, Hey I saw that police truck in Sonoyta, just around dusk. Then just before leaving town a cop stopped me to check my seatbelt. All is well, I had it on this time. Normally I take it off when I cross the border to be a rebel. LoL

Tommy Thomas Haines

Love, love, love your newspaper....will be down there in June...can’t wait!

Patricia Newton Medrano

Stop by our offices while you are here. Bring cold beer! (Just kidding)

Well it’s about 50/50 any time we pass thru Sonoyta that speed traps are out--radar guns. But of course none of us exceed the 50-mph (US) speed limit on the highway between Sonoyta & Rocky Point! But that speed trap, we always have our eyes open and our foot off the gas--literally, you almost have to coast in those 10-mph sections almost surely designed for ticket revenue (or somebody’s revenue).

Debbie C.

Can you tell me if I need a permit to crab? I just bought an awesome crab trap and would like to crab where we stay in Playa Encanto. Thanks!

Sharon Libonati Weatherman

No permit, or license required for crabbing here in Rocky Point. Bring your crab trap with you!

To Whom it May Concern,I have been going to Rocky Point since we moved

to AZ in 1995, and have always found it to be my little oasis away from the desert. I also have been going to what has now evolved into Roger Clyne and the Peacemaker’s “Circus Mexicus” since its humble beginnings and have made the journey every year since. I appreciate having your publication to refer to, as I know many others do, to find out the “goings on” around town. With that said, one thing that I have noticed that never seems to be highlighted is the annual “Circus Mexicus” show.

I have many friends that used to go to the show with a blink of an eye, but due to all the media backlash and some negative travel advisories, many are too fearful. I find it sad, that this band who has stuck by Rocky Point through all of the bad publicity and brings two cultures together, raises money for a local orphanage (Esperanza de los Niños), and provides such an economic boost to the area...not to mention, good ole’ homegrown rock and roll, is not applauded in Rocky Point Times. I feel, that it benefits so many and it is a shame to lose potential would-be-goers to fear.

I know that with your highly popular and trusted paper as a resource, people will gain the confidence to come to the show and we can bring a much needed boost to the local economy and the wonderful citizens of Rocky Point! Let’s join together to make this year the biggest and best show yet. Mi corazón pertenece a Rocky Point!

Thank you for your time and your publication,Christine Erlandson

Thank you for your letter! I have been posting and promoting RCPM on our RPTimes Newspaper Facebook Page...but without them advertising their arrival, I just completely spaced it out. I just made myself a note to get their information into the paper, the month ahead.

Thanks again for the kick in the pants!

Hi Sandra, Every time I tell someone I just returned from Peñasco they ask me if it’s safe. My stock answer “it’s safer than Phoenix”. Hard to convince them though. Really sad!!

Dan Leatherman

I know! When will those people learn what we know. We have been asked, “Do you like it there?”, after we say we have been in Rocky Point since 1990!!!

I so agree, it is beautiful here, spread the word, come to Puerto Peñasco

Wilson Halverson

Yes, Rocky Point is a perfect 81 degrees today with a slight breeze coming off the Sea of Cortez.

Beachcomber

Totally excited to hit the BEACH. Mothers Day weekend, letting wife decide where we stay. Thanks for the referrals.

James Travis Hayes

You are welcome. Need more information...just ask.

I was just reading some past issues (January to be exact) and read the article about Gretchen getting stopped at the border with 60 lbs of dog food and no beef of any kind being allowed. So when we bring our dogs, we always just put in a few days of dog food in some cereal size type of Tupperware. Is that allowed? We won’t be bringing any beef any more so no more grilling hamburgers or sausage on the beach, but we can have sandwich lunches and eat out anyway. But I am concerned about our dog food, thanks!

Lauran Herbert

Yes, last November / December we, here at the newspaper office, were getting a ton of complaints and questions about bringing dog food across the border into Mexico, and beef and milk, etc. The ‘law’ states that we may bring enough food for our pet for one day. The idea of bringing your pet’s food in a Tupperware type container sounds like a very good idea to me. As far as curtailing your ‘Beach BBQ’s’ because you cannot bring hamburger, is not necessary, as we have the best Sonoran beef steaks and hamburger (carne molida) here in Rocky Point. So, I would say, buy your steaks and hamburger down here, and go have fun on the beach.

Hi Sandra,Keep it up! We get so much good info from your

paper :) Can I get a subscription in Scottsdale?Cindy Parkinson

Of course. We send the RPTimes all over the USA, every month! Just go to our website www.rptimes.com and click subscriptions to print the form.

Love reading this paper. Been going to Rocky Point for 35 yrs and your paper is the best.

Cindy Parkinson

Hey thanks! It’s always nice to hear from someone that you are doing a good job! We love our work, and we are almost half way through our 20th year! SandyO

Hi Sandra, was good to finally meet you! Once again our visit to RP was much too short. I’ll be sending you our projects as they roll off the assembly line. Jack has informed me the fiddle player knocked it out of the park for our politician song. Vi will get to hear the finished version on Tuesday. As soon as the visual for I’d Be Lyin’ is done, you’ll see it. I’m currently working on another version of I’d Be Lyin’. A friend gave me the idea when I told him of my unique friendship with Susan. He said it could be a film. So I’m “Hollywoodizing” the story to turn it into a romance based on two versions of I’d Be Lyin’. The first version will be a romantic, let’s get together song, and the second is sung at her memorial service. I’ve already written the song, and as soon as Jack get’s time to catch his breath, he’ll work on it. I’ve made some Hollywood contacts since winning the film festivals. One guy is a long time producer/director who loves I’d Be Lyin’. His wife almost died of cancer. So I’ll be pitching the story to him. Would be a good venue for a singer/actor. I’ve got a basic storyline for the film. It could be good.

Ed

Hey, it was really good to meet and talk with you two. We ALMOST came over to Puesta...ended up not eating lunch or dinner, had workers out at the “Ranchito” and then dear friends dropped in and we drank our way through the evening. Went to Giuseppis for breakfast this AM, as we were both starving!! Let me know about your work.

SandyO

Hi Sandra,They got us, just south of Why, coming north from

the border last Tuesday also. My mom didn’t slow down fast enough, coming up to the Border Patrol check, and then got us doing 20 mph just as we passed the 15 mph sign. The young lady that pulled us over just gave us a warning as well. The signs are too close together. But we learned our lesson. There is no wiggle room and feel lucky that we got off with just a warning.

Charmen Haag

Yes, that was our first time to see a Sheriff ’s car tucked back into the brush at the side of the road.

Hello Sandy, Alicia and Lannette,If you have requests for article topics, please let me

know and I’ll what I can dofor June or July. Also if possible, please send me

a May issue if my Border Patrol facility (Why, AZ) was published in May. Please use my Alaska address, below. Many thanks.

Linda Sharp

Yes, you were published in our May issue, and there have been several comments, which you may read on our Rocky Point Times Facebook Page. Yes, I will send you the copy.

SandyO

Sandra,Thanks for your recent online mentions regarding

RCPM’s Circus Mexicus Weekend in Rocky Point June 8-10. We really appreciate it. You need to know the Clyne’s, myself and many fans are avid readers of RP Times. It has been our intention the last 2 years to support our Mexico host venue in using RP Times to help promote our weekend. Unfortunately, we missed the print deadline last year. As for this year, we’ve been preoccupied with transitioning our Saturday night show to Wrecked At the Reef. We’ll be in discussion with Wrecked about using RP Times in the future. If there is any info you need from us regarding this year, please don’t hesitate to ask. In addition to providing a great time for a target 3200+ fans, we’re also supporting La Casa de Esperanza por los Niños, the Peñasco Youth Sports Foundation and the Larry D. Large Foundation with various fundraising efforts.

Thanks again,Keara Zito and Greg Ross

Well, thank you very much for that compliment! We will, of course, continue to sponsor and support RCPM’s Circus Mexicus Concert, here in Rocky Point next month on June 8-10.

SandyO

We’d love to see Pablo’s performance but we won’t be able to be there on Friday. Where can we find out when Pablo is performing again? Does he still perform very often? Love the Pablo!

Diamante 107

We don’t know. Email him at [email protected]. We love his singing, too! Remember him at the Black Dog all those years!!!

We just returned from RP. Didn’t see the Rey Del Mar

James Travis Hayes

Oh? I can’t imagine why not. They are always out there on the Sea for their fun sunset cruises. They have one ‘Pirate’ ship in Rocky Point and one in Guaymas.

Hello Sandra O’Hare! yes, we are moving to Bella Sirena soon, they are working in the remodeling, and definitely we’re closing the location in town when we move to Bella. Thank you for asking. Chef Luca, Pane e Vino

Great, Luca! Bella Sirena Resort is a beautiful location for your restaurant!

Hi Sandra, You’re welcome, and thank you for being a friend of Rocky Point!

Johnny Karma

What a nice comment! We LOVE Rocky Point! The RPTimes is in it’s 20th year, already!

Hi Sandra, one of these years...we will be there on the El Golfo Run...until then, enjoy the fact that you don’t have to worry about a couple of pasty white Midwesterners doing something stupid, like getting stuck and deciding to drink margaritas until someone comes to their rescue with a tow rope.

Marja Phipps

Maybe October? We had such a fun trip!

I need at least a month or two just to adjust to reality of life. No better place then Puerto Peñasco.

Edward Swafford

Hey, FYI, we got the red light yesterday coming into Mexico. We had just stopped at the border store to get two cases of beer. The guy told us we were only allowed to bring in 9 beers each! He let it slide this time, but told us next time he would take the rest of our beer. How are they guys at UETA ever going to sell whole cases of beer? Diana Brooks-Rose

There are restrictions on alcohol taken across the border, going north and south. If you don’t have a RPTimes Newspaper, you can read about it at http://issuu.com/rockypoint

Sandy, Candy & I want to thank you guys for a great time this last weekend on the El Golfo run, we had a blast & just want to tell you guys Thanks.

Dave & Candy

Sooo glad you two made it to El Golfo with us!

Hi Sandra and Tom, I want to thank you guys again for your efforts in putting on just another fabulous run to El Golfo. I did have plans to come to the Survivors party at the El Captain but I guess you heard that after we left the taco bar Jon blew his transmission/differential/belt??? (whatever it was) and I pulled him home. When we finally got it all wrapped up it was pretty late. Take Care of your selves this summer and let me know about October.

Frank

It was a great run, wasn’t it!

Hi Sandra, I was in Rocky Point in March, but can’t remember the name of the Pharmacy I went to. They were Very nice & would love 2 refer friends 2 them. All I can remember is that it was just off of the main street, and there was a Chicken restaurant & Pharmacy in building on 1 corner & a Tecate drive thru on the other corner. If anyone can help Me with this- I would Really appreciate it! :)

Tamara Dianne

Tamara, the pharmacy is Farmacia de Genericos y Similares 24 Horas, by Pollo Papago, north of Burger King...we think.
