The holidays are upon us once again and many think that this is the time of year to be thankful for what we have (or don’t have as the case may be). Although I am writing this in October – I am mindful that it will reach most of you in November and so I think about what you would like to see in the last newsletter of 2012. This has been an extremely interesting year to be both a volunteer and a Board member. We saw an increase in adoption events where we showcased our beautiful cats and kittens and an increase in fundraising events a new Empty Bowls event and a 5K Fun Run and Walk and a second night of Bingo (which as we speak should be about two weeks old). We saw a drop in our funds to a point where we were very afraid that we might have to shut our doors. Then, we saw what I hoped we would see a rally by our donors, volunteers, and adopters to save our “little shelter on the corner”. Our finances improved, but we are not out of the woods yet. We are still not sustainable which means that we could find ourselves back in August, 2012 at any time. I have said this before and I will reiterate you are the hopes of this shelter. You - the adopter that tells their friends about the great cat you got from Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue. You the donor that sponsors a cat and comes to our Bowls event. You the volunteer that showcases our cats at adoption events. By the way, did I mention that all of you can be the same person? So, celebrate the holidays with those you love (and your relatives too….) but please be mindful that we still have work to do and, even though they LOVE turkey and climbing your Christmas tree, the cats would probably prefer to see their brothers and sisters find a forever home. Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue Newsletter November 2012 – February 2013

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings and Happy Holidays. The holidays are upon us once again and many think that this is the time of year to be thankful

for what we have (or don’t have as the case may be). Although I am writing this in October – I am mindful that it will reach

most of you in November and so I think about what you would like to see in the last newsletter of 2012.

This has been an extremely interesting year to be both a volunteer and a Board member.

We saw an increase in adoption events where we showcased our beautiful cats and kittens and an increase in fundraising

events – a new Empty Bowls event and a 5K Fun Run and Walk and a second night of Bingo (which as we speak should be

about two weeks old).

We saw a drop in our funds to a point where we were very afraid that we might have to shut our doors.

Then, we saw what I hoped we would see – a rally by our donors, volunteers, and adopters to save our “little shelter on the

corner”. Our finances improved, but we are not out of the woods yet. We are still not sustainable which means that we could

find ourselves back in August, 2012 at any time.

I have said this before and I will reiterate – you are the hopes of this shelter. You - the adopter that tells their friends about

the great cat you got from Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue. You – the donor that sponsors a cat and comes to our Bowls event.

You – the volunteer that showcases our cats at adoption events. By the way, did I mention that all of you can be the same

person?

So, celebrate the holidays with those you love (and your relatives too….) but please be mindful that we still have work to do

and, even though they LOVE turkey and climbing your Christmas tree, the cats would probably prefer to see their brothers and

sisters find a forever home.

Happy holidays to all…..

Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue Annual Meeting

December 11, 2012, beginning at 7:00 John Collins United Methodist Church

2320 S. Bannock St Board of Director Candidate’s biographies

Kevin Snow Kevin has served for one year on the board of directors and for two years as volunteer coordinator. As a small business owner, he has great managerial and organizational skills which he has brought, and will continue to bring, to the Board of Directors. His goals for the shelter are focused mainly on improving the welfare of the animals in our care and promoting our name through adoption events and other media. Katey Tarkington Katey has volunteered for RMFR for two years and has served for one year as the President of RMFR’s Board of Directors. She has experience in human resources and on other boards. Her primary goals for the shelter are to improve the grant writing program, help create a strategic plan RMFR’s future, and increase our name recognition within the Denver community. Valerie Searles Val has been on the board for one and a half years, serving in 2012 as Vice President. She is also the games manager for the newly established Sunday night bingo game and works as an ambassador for the shelter at many of our community events. Her goals for the shelter include achieving and maintain financial stability for the shelter through bingo and other events. Val has been with the shelter for many years. Aubyn Royall Aubyn has served on the board of directors for the University of Denver Law School’s chapter of the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. She has prior fundraising experience and has recently become involved in large fundraising efforts for RMFR and will continue to play an important role in achieving sustainability for the shelter. Her goals for the shelter include promoting sustainability and longevity for RMFR while preserving the rescue’s core values. Sustainability means: (1) being able to take in the maximum number of cats that the rescue is permitted to; (2) having enough funds to cover all necessary expenses while also saving for future projects, (3) expanding the rescue’s public visibility in Colorado; and (4) gathering new, generous donors

Tiffany Sailler Tiffany has served on the board of directors for one year and has organized events such as the Tipsy Tabby Pub Crawl and several high profile adoption events. Her job as a business analyst for a non-profit Denver hospital gives her a unique perspective on non-profit business and finance. Her primary goal for RMFR is to achieve sustainability so that we can continue to meet the needs of our cats for many years to come. Marc Steinman Marc has served on the board of directors for one year. He organized the Tipsy Tabby Pub Crawl and is currently working on the Pints for Pussycats event. He has a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and is working on an MBA in Finance. His goals for RMFR are to develop a well-defined strategy and business plan with measurable goals and to get involvement and support from the local business community. Julie Busby Julie is a long time volunteer with RMFR and has 18 years experience working for non-profits. At RMFR, she works on the grants committee and puts together RMFR’s e-MEWSletter. She also has experience organizing fundraising events and managing a non-profit office. Julie’s goals for the shelter include seeking and obtaining sustainable corporate and foundation funding; continuing to nurture individual giving; gaining better exposure of RMFR in the community by continuing with fund raising events and continuing RMFR’s culture of involving volunteers. Tom Giordano Tom has served as Treasurer on RMFR’s board of directors for one and a half years. He also has experience on other boards in the community. Tom’s goals for the shelter include continuing to improve financial management practice and establishing a process for financial management for the future. Tom’s shelter philosophy is easily stated, “It’s all about the cats.” Kathryn Gamelin Kathryn has volunteered at RMFR for approximately two years. She has rapidly become the “face of RMFR” by conducting television and radio interviews for publicity for the shelter. Kathryn is very active in helping with fundraising events and being a foster parent for many of the cats and kittens that need additional help. Kathryn’s primary goal for the shelter is to help achieve sustainability and to increase our presence in the community.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Tipsy Tabby Pub Crawl!

We had 35 attendees this year and gave out over $800 worth of Prizes. This year’s theme was famous musicians and we had some amazing, creative costumes. The stops this year were Star Bar, LODO’s, Giggling Grizzly and Scruffy Murphy's. Special thanks to all the bars and sponsors that helped us out for this event. The event brought in about $1,000 for the cats of RMFR. This will help

pay for things such as food and medical expenses.

This year the

RMFR’s Wine & Whiskers event was on Saturday, October 13th at the Studios at Overland Crossing and was a HUGE success. We raised $7,250 for RMFR and had a great evening. Special thanks to all of our volunteers who made this event possible, our guests for the evening, and all of our wine, food, and silent auction item donors! Tons of people were involved in making this event a success, and we can’t thank you all enough for what you do for the shelter!

Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue volunteers and

their friends did a FABULOUS job of manning

our beer booth and talking up the shelter at

Oktoberfest.

Thank you, John Elliott for persuading Human Movement to pick RMFR as their non-profit and pulling the liquor license. Without that, none of this would have happened. Kevin Snow, our Volunteer Coordinator extraordinaire, did a tremendous job of coordinating shifts and communicating to volunteers. Our "shift bosses" were invaluable for their extra hard work and dedication. They were also very flexible and easy to work with. THANK YOU TO VOLUNTEERS AND FRIENDS THAT VOLUNTEERED FOR A SHIFT (or several) at this event. Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue earned over $10,600. Everyone’s efforts had an incredible impact on our "little shelter on the corner." This is the largest event that we have ever staffed and everyone helped make that happen.

Thank you for selling beer – Love, Winkey & Socks

The RMFR needs your help! Yes, you! As you all know, RMFR is still in serious need of funds to stay open and many of you have been wondering, “What can I do to help?” The shelter holds a number of fundraising & adoption events, and along with volunteering to help out at one of those, you can always decide to hold your own fundraiser, like Annmarie Marino did in September. Annmarie held a garage sale and raised over $1,000 for the shelter! Annmarie, the kitties thank you from the bottom of their furry little hearts!

Annmarie has made Asia D and Little Hummer very happy!

Speaking of fund raising… Have you ever thought about joining the fundraising committee for the RMFR, but didn't know where to get started or what you might have to offer? Fundraising isn't as intimidating as it sounds, and we need help with a variety of tasks for all of our events. Don't like calling & asking people for money, but you're internet savvy? Hate the internet, but have writing skills? We have plenty of areas that we need your help with! Do you enjoy: - calling for sponsorships (monetary donations) - calling for product donations (items for raffles, silent auctions) - advertising/promotion - writing - social media - researching (phone, internet, or otherwise!) - driving to pick up donations - setting up / tearing down events - overall event anything else you think might be helpful! YES! I would like to volunteer for: _________________________ You know what I always thought would be a good fundraiser?______________________ Whether you want to help with one event or with all of them, we need you to contact - us! Please respond back to [email protected] if you have a skill that you could share with the kitties!

Recent RMFR Fundraising Events

Restaurant Fundraisers October 1 – October 31

Big thanks to our most recent Restaurant Night hosts, WaterCourse Foods & Piatti Ristorante & Bar. Both hosted several extremely successful fundraising nights for the RMFR in the past couple of years and they generously partnered up with us again during the month of October. We can also thank Virgilio’s Pizzeria & Wine Bar as well as The Melting Pot for giving us the entire MONTH to gorge ourselves, and donating 10% of the proceeds to the RMFR. Thanks to diners ordering RMFR and

ordering off the special menu we raised more than $3,500 during the month of October!

Thank you, WaterCourse, Piatti’s, Virgilio’s & The Melting Pot, for your continued support of the RMFR! Mail, email, or bring your itemized Virgilio’s receipt back to the shelter. RMFR will collect all the receipts & Virgillio’s will give the RMFR 10% of the receipt totals! Contact person – Tiffany Sailler

Foster Homes! We Need Foster Homes!

You can make a difference! Do you have experience with feline medical

problems, administering medication and recovery? We sometimes have cats

that need your help. Or, maybe you would like to help nurture a litter of kittens

and their mother, or a senior cat –still mischievous, just more experienced.

There are also opportunities to foster kitties during their end-of-life –a kitty

hospice, if you will. Open your heart and your home. For more information call

the RMFR shelter at 303-744-6076.
