UNDERSTANDING FILE FORMAT EXTENSIONS

EPS (.eps) Best for Printing logos This format can be opened in the Adobe Illustrator program and can also be opened with Adobe Photoshop programs that support Vector and Raster graphics. Only users with Adobe Illustrator or related programs can view EPS files. Preferred file format for logos.

AI (.ai) Good for Printing logosAdobe Illustrator file that supports vector-based artwork. Virtually identical to .eps files, these are okay to send as logos, where available.

Ideal for logos & vector/line art

TIFF (.tiff or .tif) Best for Printing images/photosTIFF can be high resolution and uncompressed so is popular for printed materials, magazines, and print advertising. It is possible to have a transparent background with a .tiff file. TIFF files are generally larger than JPEG files. Many computers are capable of displaying TIFF files. Considered a raster graphic image.

Photoshop PSD (.psd) Best for Printing images/photosThis is Adobe Photoshop’s standard file format. The resolution of a .psd (high or low) often determines its useability for either print or web. Photoshop users can alter file resolutions, so it’s not safe to assume that any .psd file is high enough resolution for print. Only users with Adobe Photoshop or related programs can view PSD files. Print-quality resolution is 300DPI (dots per inch). Considered a raster graphic image.

JPEG or JPG (.jpg)Good for Print, Web, PowerPoint and/or WordJPEG is a compressed format and can be optimized to a very small file size. It is popular for print and website work. Please note that any file with the name “web” in it is low-resolution (low res). Please note that a transparent background is not possible with this file format. If there’s a white box behind the logo, it will print with a white box. All computers can view JPEG files. Considered a raster graphic image.

Ideal for photos

PNG (.png) Good for web, Powerpoint and/or WordThis format is good for websites, generally similar properties of Gif format but better quality (16 million colors). This format supports a transparent background and holds up very well on screen.

JPEG or JPG (.jpg) Good for web, Powerpoint and/or WordThis format is good for websites but does not support a transparent background.

GIF (.gif) Okay for web, Powerpoint and/or WordCompressive file format that is good for graphics that aren´t real life color images (e.g. cartoon, logos, and vector graphics) because this file format has only 256 colors. A benefit of GIF is that we can use to create animation files called GIF Animation that are high quality and low file size (good for websites).

Ideal for web

PDF (.pdf)Okay for logos, typically used for finished ads or promosPortable Document File can contain a mixture of vector and raster (photos) images and can embed fonts thereby removing the need to include fonts with a project. A free PDF viewer is available at Adobe.com. This format is usually acceptable when providing a vector-based logo, but an .eps or .ai file is preferred. Typically used as proof or final art for viewing and printing of completed ads or promos.

BMP (.bmp) Avoid when possibleThis is a classic file format designed for Microsoft Windows and OS/2 platforms. BMP os ‘bitmap’ images use a deep color palette (16.7 million colors) that can be saved as RGB, Index color and Gray Scale modes. Typically a compressed bitmap is lower quality than JPEG and not as universally compatible.

Embroidered/Digitized formats Used for embroideryEmbroidery files types are determined by the specific piece of embroidery machine and is unique to the digitizing software possessed by the vendor. RMEF does not possess software capable of creating these files. It is recommended that an .eps, PDF, or .ai file be given to the embroidery vendor and they will create the necessary embroider file. Below are the multitude of embroider file extensions:
