Twenty Years Ago August 22, 2001 Bob and Rosie Schettler were the winners of the $1500 prize in the St. Bernard’s Parish Raffle. Ed Montgomery was presented with a plaque that was presented to his com- pany for the excellent job they did to restore St. Bernard’s Church. The engagement of Amy Dunn to Michael White was announced. The couple are planning a October 13 wed- ding. Christ the King Alumni playing on the KHS Freshmen Football team include David Boeckman, Josh Snyder, Mike Wittry, Alex Schleisman, Tim Schrad and Joe Anthofer. American Legion Auxiliary members honored for perfect attendance for the 1990-91 auxiliary year were Marion Quinlin, Dorothy Pollman, Elise Herman, Eunice Reising, Jackie Buelt, Mildred Schelle, and Elizabeth Stork. Mr. and Mrs. William Schreck an- nounced the engagement and approach- ing marriage of their daughter Elaine to Ray Nieland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nieland. Preceding the meeting, a dessert was served by Marilyn Vonnahme, Marilyn Mueggenberg and Jamie Wiskus. The meeting was called to order by President Marsha Stork. Marilyn Von- nahme gave the opening prayer in the absence of the Chaplain. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited and a moment of silence was observed for the deceased. Roll Call was answered by two officers with the Secretary being absent. There were 15 members in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Renee Mueg- genberg, Secretary Pro Tem and were approved as read. The Treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer, Pat Olberding. She also gave a report on the July 4th celebration. The reports were placed on file for audit. Bills were presented for postage and the Appreciation supper. Eileen Sander made the motion to pay all bills and the motion carried. An Installation Ceremony for new officers: Ann Schmitz, Vice President and Jennifer Custer, Treasurer, was then held. Marilyn Mueggenberg was Sgt-At- Arms and Renee Mueggenberg was Installing Officer for the ceremony. President’s report: Marsha and Renee had attended the Past District President’s Luncheon in Pocahontas on June 21st. She thanked Peg Derner, Nancy Pudenz, Renee Mueggenberg and Ione Koster for helping with the Honor Guard for Leone Buelt’s funeral. She also thanked Ann Schmitz, Jen Custer, Eileen Sander, Pat Olberding and Mary Lou Hermsen for attending the Carroll County ALA workshop. Standing Committee Reports: Bloodmobile – On June 28 there were 26 eligible donors with 32 units collected. One first time donor and two people reached the one gallon milestone. The next bloodmobile will be Monday, August 23. JR Activities - Junior Camp is being held August 15-20, 2021, at the Newton Christian Conference Center in Newton. August 20th is the JR Convention. Membership - the year ended with 101 paid members. Poppies - Marsha reported that she had given a certificate to Callie Kokenge for helping with poppy distribution. V A & R - Renee stated that she had sent 3,993 coupons worth $9,987.59 since the June meeting. Communications: Marsha read ‘thank you’ cards from the Wilma Boes and Leone Buelt families, the Breda Day Care and a card from MaryAnn Naber- haus. She also had received a note from Terri Taylor about the Foster Grand- parents program. Anyone interested can contact Terri @ 712-292- 5293. Old Business: Marsha reported on the July 4 celebration and the donations given this year. She also stated that a Welfare Account had been opened to keep a separate accounting of General and Welfare monies. The grave markers that were ordered had arrived. New Business: There will be a Memorial Service at Holy Spirit on August 21st at 10:30 a.m. for Marita Buelt and an Honor Guard is requested. Marsha passed a sign-up sheet for anyone interested in being on the Honor Guard for future funerals. She informed the membership that the Unit was asked if we wanted to purchase a double-sided, 3 x 5 American Legion Auxiliary flag to be used in conjunction with The American Legion flag at the ballpark for future celebrations. Jennifer Custer made the motion to purchase the flag and the motion carried. Discussion was raised on adding members in ‘memory care’ to Rule #4 of the Standing Rules and was tabled pending further research. August Birthdays: Ann Funke, Vicki Gross, Marcia Kollasch, Charlene Lux, Mekysha Sander, Missy Sander- Stork, Christy Schettler, Ann Schmitz, Marsha Stork, Carolyn Vasos, Kassie Wernimont, Doris White and Breely Knobbe. Eighty Years Ago August 16, 1941 Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Roth and Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Bohnenkamp left on a trip to the Black Hills, S.D. and Yellowstone Park. Cynthia Hoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Hoff, underwent a tonsil- lectomy at the Lake City Hospital. Miss Marilyn Koenig of Halbur un- derwent a tonsillectomy at the Carroll hospital. Pvt. Wilfred Naberhaus spent his furlough with his parents. He was sta- tioned at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo., A heavy downpour of rain visited this locality and was a great relief from the drought experience the past several weeks Ninety Years Ago August 26, 1931 Due to the drought the potato crop was reported to be very short. The children of Albert Reiling ten- dered him a pleasant surprise on his birthday. The marriage of Miss Florence Olberding of Arcadia to James Quinn of Bancroft took place August 18 at Arcadia. Hazel Smid returned home from Des Moines where she had spent two months at the James Owens home. Edward H. Von Glan won first in the Carroll County 4-H health contest with a score of 98.3 percent.
