The only filly in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on Saturday, Bob Peters’ homebred Delicacy (Al Maher) became the fifth

filly since 1950 to win the race and is only the second, Zarita (Pentire) being the first, to complete the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) - South Australian Derby double.

The dominant winner of the Australasian Oaks the week prior, Delicacy had completed the WA Oaks (Gr 3, 2400m) - WATC Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) double in her home state, but despite this her owner was not overly confident going into Saturday’s race.

“I was not confident (going into Saturday’s race),” Peters told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The track was quite wet and finished off being a Soft6. Her biggest attribute is the ability to sprint hard at the end of the race and a wet track takes that away. I was also aware of the fact that she had been up a long time.

“I was then even less confident in the run, especially when she got so far back.”

A winner of the WA Champion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ascot on 15 November, the daughter of Emirates Park-based stallion Al Maher (Danehill) finished fifth in the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1500m) a week later before being spelled. She has had eight starts this campaign, winning her last six and will now be spelled with a view to the spring.

“She will be spelled. I will spell her in South Australia to get over the run and decide what I am going to do after that,” said Peters.

Asked whether she will remain under the care of trainer Grant Williams or transfer to a Victorian-based trainer Peters said: “I am not sure, I have not made a decision on that yet.

“I will talk to the handicapper in WA to see what her rating will be now. She was reasonably rated but is probably not now. I don’t know.”

Peters, who bred and raced both Delicacy’s dam the dual winner Simply Wicked (Scenic) along with her granddam the four-time Listed winner Street Talk (Marauding), is of the view that this filly is now starting to rate right up there with the best horses he has raced.

Those include his four-time Group One winner Old Comrade (Old Spice) who won the Fruit ‘N’ Veg Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2000 and then the following year as well as the 2001 Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) before he defeated Northerly (Serheed) in the 2002 Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

“She’s rating quite highly now. I have won two Group One races with a few that I have had and then I have had one that won four, so she is getting on the way up there now,” said Peters.

As to whether Delicacy will remain in training past next year will depend on how she comes back after her spell as will her potential spring targets.

“A lot would depend (on how she comes back),” said Peters. “They are broodmares for a long time and she is only young at the

moment. A lot of three-year-old fillies don’t come back after a long campaign and she has had a lot more runs than most fillies would have had so you have to be a bit wary over whether she would come back or not.”

Delicacy beat the New Zealand raider Werther (Tavistock) by a length and a half on Saturday and the plans for the Andrew Campbell-trained gelding look set to change following his performance.

The original plan had been for the Championship Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) winner to spell, however Campbell will sit down with Werther’s connections in the next few days to discuss whether to send the horse to Queensland or stick to the original plan and send him back to New Zealand to spell.

“He has thrived since he has been over here and has come through the race in superb fashion,” said Campbell yesterday.

“The plan had been to just come for the one race and then send him home for a spell but he has done that well that we do need to think about Queensland as they are only three once and while he is in top form he has to be a big show in a race like the Derby.”

Campbell acknowledged that Delicacy could be one of the best fillies in Australasia.

“She could be the best staying filly they have seen here in a number of years,” he said.

“My fellow went a super race and tried to fight back when she went by but she looked like she was in a different class. I guess in any other year we would be celebrating a victory right now but unfortunately he struck one like this.”

One of four stakes winners by the Cambridge Stud-based Tavistock (Montjeu), Werther is out of the Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare Bagalollies who won twice over 2000 and 2100 metres.

“I did say to the owners he would be a top stayer once he matured and he has certainly shown that now we have him racing in these middle distance events,” he said.

“I think he is probably still six months away from his best so we have a lot to look forward to in the spring if he can come up like he has for this campaign.”

AUSTRALIASILENT ACHIEVER RETIRED

Silent Achiever (O’Reilly) has been retired after finishing tenth in Saturday’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), her sixth unplaced run this preparation. She is now likely to be bred to Southern Hemisphere time, with Frankel (Galileo), Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) and Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) being mentioned as possible mates. Silent Achiever retires as the winner of ten of her 36 starts for prizemoney of $3,145,677 in a career highlighted by winning the 2014 The BMW (registered as H E Tancred Stakes) (Gr 1, 2400m) and the 2012 New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

GREEN MOON RETIREDAnother out of Saturday’s Doomben Cup to be retired is the 2012 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Green Moon (Montjeu). “Not sure we have ever owned a horse that tried so hard, today he said enough,” part-owner Nick Williams said on Twitter. The now eight-year-old entire retires with seven wins and four placings from 36 starts with $5,377,992 in prize money.

LEEBAZ SPELLEDLeebaz (Zabeel) has been spelled after Saturday’s Doomben Cup where, as second favourite, he dropped out after leading to the home turn to finish 14th behind impressive winner Pornichet (Vespone). It was only Leebaz’s sixth unplaced run in his 18 start career, with seven wins, including the A D Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at the Gold Coast on 25 April. Meanwhile,

Team Hawkes-trained stablemate Our Boy Malachi (Top Echelon) is to head to Saturday week’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) after his third in the BTC Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday.

SRIKANDI TO 10,000Trainer Ciaron Maher said yesterday the he could not find anything amiss with Srikandi (Dubawi), who finished eighth in Saturday’s BTC Cup at Doomben, after she blundered at the start. An impressive first-up winner of the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on 25 April, Srikandi will now progress to the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) on Saturday week. EL ROCA PULLS UP OK

El Roca (Fastnet Rock) has pulled up well after his first run for 12 months when 11th in the BTC Cup. El Roca was trapped deep before tiring from the home turn with trainer Trent Busuttin fearing the lightly raced four-year-old had broken down. But he subsequently pulled up sound although no decision has been made about his next start.

LANKAN RUPEE BONE BRUISINGLankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) is recovering from bone bruising to his off-hind fetlock, which provides an explanation for his disappointing ninth in the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on 6 April. “He had a bit of bone bruising on his off hind fetlock where he had an operation

as a foal apparently,” trainer Mick Price said. “At least we have a reason to give him a nice spell…he’ll come back in the spring.” Price added that the five-time Group One winner would now spell in the warmer weather in the Hunter Valley rather than in Victoria. SPEEDINESS RETIREDGroup Three winning sprinter Speediness (Testa Rossa) has been retired after finishing ninth in Saturday’s BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) at Doomben. “I’m privileged to have had the horse,” trainer Colin Scott said. Speediness raced 39 times for seven wins and 11 placings, which included three at Group One level for prize money of $1,086,972. “He was desperately unlucky not to win two or three million. He beat a lot of good top-liners on their day he just never, unfortunately, got to poke his head out at the right time.” BACHMAN FOR GRAND PRIX

Promising staying colt Bachman (All American) is to head to Brisbane for the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben on Saturday week after the colt’s encouraging third in the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. “It took him the first part of the race to get into his rhythm, which tells me he is looking for further,” trainer Gerald Ryan said of Saturday’s run. “He will step up to the 2000 metres in the Grand Prix Stakes and go another two weeks to the Derby.”

MONDAy 11 MAy 2015 ANZINTERNATIONAL SALES NEWS AL SHAQAB RACING STRONG IN PARIS

@ANZ_NEWS | 7 | ANZBLOODSTOCKNEWS.COM

Al Shaqab Racing bought the top two lots at Saturday’s Arqana Breeze Up Sale at Saint-Cloud and overall seven of the top ten highest priced lots on a day that saw the sale post record figures for the third consecutive year.

The top priced two-year-old sold late in the day when the Grove Stud-consigned colt by Oasis Dream (Green Desert) was sold for €600,000 to Nicolas de Watrigant. Catalogued as Lot 132, the colt is out of the unraced mare Vallee Des Reves (Kingmambo) who has produced five winners including the 2005 Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winning filly Maids Causeway (Giant’s Causeway). This is the further family of Group One winning sire Vespone (Llandaff) who sired Saturday’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Pornichet.

“His pedigree is obvious and we were expecting a good breeze from him, which is exactly what he did. This is a lot of money but he’s got all the attributes to make a stallion one day,” de Watrigant said afterwards and added that the colt would be trained in Chantilly by Francis-Henri Graffard.

The sale-topping colt had been purchased by Brendan Holland’s Grove Stud for US$150,000 at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The second highest priced lot had come only a few minutes earlier when Nicolas de Watrigant for Al Shaqab Racing went to €340,000 to secure Lot 129, a filly by Coolmore Australia shuttle Zoffany (Dansili).

Also consigned by Grove Stud, the chestnut filly is out of the winning mare Sweet Kristeen (Candy Stripes) who is the dam of three winners and a half sister to the grandam of the Group One winning filly Tiggy Wiggy (Kodiac) who ran third in last weekend’s 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

Grove Stud had purchased the filly for £36,000 at last year’s Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale.

Blue Gum Farm shuttler Canford Cliffs (Tagula) provided the third highest priced two-year-old to sell when Robert Nataf’s Horse France on behalf of Coolmore purchased Lot 2 for €320,000.

Consigned by Mocklershill, the colt is the first foal out of the winning mare Wonderous Light (Montjeu), herself a half sister to the Group Three winner and Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner up Ice Queen (Danehill Dancer).

“He did a very good breeze and Coolmore are keen to support the sire, who is having a very good start to his stud career,” said Nataf.

Stephen Hillen Bloodstock went to €310,000 for Lot 37, a colt by

the late Coolmore Australia shuttler High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), who sired a stakes treble on Saturday.

Consigned by Gaybrook Lodge Stud the bay is out of the Listed placed Green Desert (Danzig) mare Crystany, herself a daughter of the Group One winner Crystal Music (Nureyev).

A colt by Darley’s Lonhro (Octagonal) was also purchased by Al Shaqab Racing. Catalogued as Lot 99, the colt is out of the unraced Pacific Indy (A P Indy), the dam of one winner to date and herself out of the Group Two winner and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) runner up Sha Tin (Mr Prospector).

The colt was purchased for €260,000 on Saturday having been bought for only US$17000 at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

With the exception of the clearance rate which decreased only one per cent, all other figures posted increases. The aggregate was up 22 per cent and the average increased 21 per cent compared to last year’s sale, up to €8,203,000 and €60,000 respectively, whilst the median was up nine per cent to €60,000.

“We are obviously thrilled with another outstanding renewal of this sale,” Arqana President Eric Hoyeau said.

“The catalogue has improved dramatically over the last decade as a result of the confidence that we have built with vendors. They are assured to find the right buyers for quality horses, and the reverse is true with buyers – it is a virtuous circle that has really brought this sale forward.

“We have a very international clientele and most horses are going to be trained in Europe, including a good number in France. I would like to thank all the vendors, who work very hard selecting and prepping these horses, as well as the team at Saint-Cloud racecourse who have produced a top class track for the breezes. It is an essential element to showcase the juveniles in the best conditions.”
