Counselor’s Corner As parents, we want our children to shine in everything they do. We want them to feel accomplished in whatever they take on: academics, sports, music, dance, bowling. Of course our gifted children are well aware of this expectation. They rarely struggle with anything, so in return we hold high expectations for them. And guess what? They do so, too! A perfectionist, especially those that are gifted, can be unsatisfied with their performance; even when they have done beautifully! This type of struggle can be debilitating. It keeps them from taking risks. The fear of failure is so strong they avoid work, play, and anything new. That could also translate to refusing to complete basic work at school, blaming others for their own lack of follow through, and making excuses. You may see your child become rebellious or defiant due to the fear of not being "good enough." So.... how do we help them manage? Tell them about your mistakes. Normalize this experience for them. Of courseour gifted children are well aware of this expectation. Theyrarely struggle with anything, so in return we hold highexpectations for them. And guess what? They do so, too!

eviewRRCounselor’s Corner(Continued from page 1) Some great things have come from mistakes! The Frisbee, Post-It Notes, and Toll House Chocolate Chip cookies{thank goodness}!

Teach them how to practice, but also how to lose. Because so manythings come so easily to gifted children they would rather give up or noteven try, than fail. Find an activity they will have to work at --piano lessons, swimming, horse-back riding -- and sign them up!

Work with them between lessons. This will help them learn that greatthings come through hard work. Then, here's what's important and sotough, teach them to lose. Graciously. Play games with them. Start withgames of chance, then work towards games based on skill.

Place focus on the process, not the end product. You can start bychanging what you say. Saying "you're so smart!" may reinforce to yourchild that they did well simply because they are smart. Instead try:

• You never gave up, even when it was hard.• You tried really hard on that!• You have really improved on ___________.• I can tell you studied very hard!• You are not afraid of a challenge! I like that!• You remembered to ______ {specific skill}! Great

thinking!• I love that you are always prepared for class {dance

class, swim lessons, school}.• You handled that situation really wellbecause ________.• You don't have to be perfect to be great.• I believe in you.• I love your creativity.• I'm excited to spend time with you.• You make me happy.

Did you breathe a sigh of relief that your child is not in an upper gradeso this is not a problem yet? This article was requested by a first gradeteacher....

Be mindful how you speak to your child, that becomes their inner voice.

Caren K. Potter, M.A.School Counselor

eviewRROn December 21, members of the Providence Spring CharacterClub, along with their parents and faculty club sponsors, Mrs.McMurray, Mrs. Adamson and Mrs. Fletcher, visited the RonaldMcDonald House, a facility here in Charlotte which offers hope, support and love to families who have to travel here to get medicalhelp from area hospitals for their children’s serious illnesses.

The Charlotte Ronald McDonald House is one of more than 300houses operating worldwide today. By staying at a RonaldMcDonald House when coming from out of town, parents can better communicate with their child’s medicalteam and keep up with complicated treatment plans as needed. Supporting the local Ronald McDonald Househas been a third grade service learning project here at PSE for several years and one also supported by the PSECharacter Club.

After touring this facility, the group walked over to the Levine Children’s Hospital to deliver a very special giftfrom the Providence Spring School Community. They presented 193 books to hospital representatives whichhad been purchased by PSE families from our Fall Book Fair. Each book contains a special bookplate indicatingthat it was a gift from Providence Spring Elementary given in honor of Superintendent Ann Clark’s CMS “NorthStar” Reading Initiative. These books will be enjoyed by the young patients at the hospital and by adults wholove to read to them.

These pictures show the smiling faces of PSE Rockets who want to be involved with giving back to thecommunity. Fortunately, we have a school full of caring and giving student “do-gooders” who have adults, bothparents and teachers, to help them with their efforts. This winning combination of adults providingopportunities for children to express their compassion in real life situations is an important part of their growthin becoming the empathetic problem solvers of tomorrow. Thanks to all who were involved in this very nobleand very important service learning project.
