The Scroll of the prophet Isaiah was
handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place
where it is written: “The Spirit of the LORD is on
me, because He has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for
the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the
year of the LORD’s favor.” Luke 4:17-19/Isaiah 61:1-2

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live
peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2
Never in my lifetime has our nation been so politically divided as it is today. I remember well the
waning days of “Jim Crow” and the emergence of the civil rights movement. I remember when John
Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated. We weren’t as divided
than, as now.
The way I recall, it was during the days of the Viet Nam War, when anarchy ruled on college
campuses and black power riots broke out in the streets of the inner cities of America, that the
political polarization began. Even then, there was more agreement on values and beliefs in America
than we see today. And, believe it or not, less political animosity was evident. I think the change in
civility that we now see reflects a change in our national religious conscience. Today our nation
seems divided over whether or not we are a nation that honors God, “one nation under God with
liberty and justice for all.”
Recently Ann and I visited Washington, DC, with our daughter and her family. We viewed and
considered some important historical documents regarding the establishment of our nation. Clearly,
the birth of our nation was seen by our founding fathers as an act of “divine providence.” For the
most part, our founding fathers believed that we were a free nation because God ordained it to be
so!
But, contrary to other nations, they believed that a nation could be ordained and blessed by God
without its government compelling the acceptance of a national religion or restricting the free
expression of other religious beliefs. Religious beliefs have been the fodder of many civil wars in
history and our founding fathers hoped to form a nation that would last.
The fact is, however, that our religious beliefs inform our civic behavior. As the people of our nation
have become more secular and atheistic, the core values of a free society which include civil
behavior, civil expression of differences of opinions and especially sanctity of life have eroded.
President Lincoln asserted that our nation was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition
that all men are created equal. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of his dream that his four little children
“would one day live in a nation where they would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the
content of their character.” The underlying belief of President Lincoln and Dr. King was in the
sanctity of life.

If it were up to Christians today, especially
those of an evangelical bent, I believe that the
vision of President Lincoln and Dr. King would
be within our grasp. The problem lies with
atheistic secularists who seek to rule by
oppression, dividing us by the color of our skin
and ethnicity, establishing a class system based
on academia and demanding that we ignore the
quality of peoples’ character. This will not work!
A nation that refuses to be under God
indivisible, will not the “United States” because
there are no true lasting values around which to
be united.
Many say that religion and politics do not
mix. But I believe that our faith informs our
intelligence, and politics is clearly a matter of
intellectual opinion. So, while we agree that the
first amendment to our constitution is a
cornerstone of our democracy, Christians must
understand that the foundation of our political
persuasions are, in the end, faith-based. Today,
more than ever before, our faith must inform
our political beliefs.
It’s something to think about!

BoBB (Band of Baptist Brothers)
This is our Men’s Ministry Team here at The
Creek. We meet every third Sunday morning at
7:30 at the Old Stage Grill for fellowship and
planning. We do mission trips, help organize
work days at the church, provide assistance in
the parking lot each Sunday morning etc… If
you have a heart for these ministries or just
want a group of men to fellowship with on a
regular basis, we invite you to join us Sunday,
August 19, at 7:30 am at the Old Stage Grill.
For questions, see Jimmy Merrell.
JOY Group (Jesus Our Yahweh)
We’re a fellowship group with no gender or
age requirements! We’re open to the
community! We’re open to suggestions for
fellowship events on the fourth Thursday of
each month. Sometimes we take off to
explore, or shop, or just have lunch and games
at the Old Stage Grill or The Creek. If you’re
looking for a fun group, fellowship, and a little
adventure, bring a friend and join us Thursday,
August 23. Check with Mae Burcham and
watch the bulletin for details each month.

Ministry Team Signups in September
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared
in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
What are the good works God has planned for you? Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:27, “Now you are the
body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” Throughout that chapter, Paul writes about how all
the parts of the body are to work together to make the body function well. We need you to step up and
sign up to fulfill your function in the Body of Christ here at The Creek. On page five you will find a list of
each area of ministry and what teams come together to complete that ministry. Take time to ask God
where He has planned for you to work.
