WSBVI 4-H Club The Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired 4-H Club (WSBVI) is looking for youth and adults who would like to make a difference in the lives of others! Many WSBVI members need one-on-one assistance with project activities during their 4-H meetings. Meetings last one hour on the first and third Tuesday of most months starting at 7:00 p.m. Our October meetings will be on Tuesday, October 4 and 18, and one evening will include a bonfire complete with S’mores! Volunteers are asked to come at 6:45 p.m. to get instructions on the project of the evening. These kids are a lot of fun to work with and love coming to 4-H! Anyone can help, even Cloverbuds and parents! We are also looking for older youth who might be interested in leading a project. This would be a great youth leadership project, or if you are thinking about a career in teaching or working with special needs youth, you can get some hands-on experience. You don't have to make a long-term commitment…even one or two meetings will really help! If you would like to help or have any questions, contact Kathy Farrey at [email protected] or 754-0139.

Children’s Christmas Benefit

More info will be available in the November/December Cloverpatch. Check out the Facebook page “Orfordville Children’s Christmas Benefit” for the latest information.

4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl November 3 – Pizza Party

Cavy & Hamster Project New Members Welcome!

Do you own a small pet such as a guinea pig or hamster? Have you ever thought about showing an animal at the fair but thought you couldn’t because you live in the city? Well then, the Cavy & Hamster project may be for you!!!

Cavy is the scientific name for the familiar guinea pig. Cavies and hamsters shown at the fair can be from a pet store, an adoption or rescue, or from a breeder. They don’t need to be purebreds as we also have a pet class division for those of mixed breeds. Members can show up to four animals total in any combination of cavies or hamsters. They can also exhibit in showmanship for each species as well as with posters and displays. Don’t worry, your animal won’t have to stay at the fair all week. They will only need to be there on judging day.

You must have your animal(s) in your possession by April 1, 2017, to show at the 2017 fair, which means you will still have plenty of time to decide what animal would be right for you. Our first couple of meetings will be held this winter, and we will discuss animal selection as well as the care and health of your pet.

So, if you are looking to try a new project this year, check out Cavy & Hamster! If you would like more information, please contact Kathy/Mike Farrey at [email protected] or 608-754-0139.

4-H Mechanical Science Leaders Meeting Mechanical Science leaders and youth leaders, mark your calendars for Thursday, October 20 for a planning meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Courthouse. ALL leaders in Mechanical Science (Rocketry, Bicycles, Aircraft, Small Engines, and Models) are invited and encouraged to attend! Help plan the countywide events and set the dates for the project in 2017!

Fair Exhibits Left! There are still Rock County 4-H Fair exhibits and Wisconsin State Fair exhibits at the Rock County 4-H Fair Secretary’s Office! If you have not picked up your exhibits yet, please do so soon. It is best to call the Fair Office at 755-1470 to make sure the office is open before making a special trip.

Attention: All 4-H Fair Trophy Winners! If you won a trophy at the Rock County 4-H Fair, it is YOUR responsibility to send a thank you note to the trophy sponsor. Send that thank you note today! If the name and address of the sponsor was not on a card attached to the trophy or plaque, call the Fair Office at 755-1470.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU We would like to thank all the Fair Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Junior Superintendents, UW Extension Office, Club Chairpersons, Leaders, FFA Advisors, Exhibitors, and Parents. It’s October…

…time to start planning and setting your goals for the 2016-2017 4-H year.

Challenge yourself

and try something new!

Ask a leader or a 4-H friend about a new project area that sounds interesting.

Look through the “Rock County 4-H Project Guide” that you will receive from your club leader.

Check out the project pages on the Wisconsin 4-H website at http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hprojects/. On these pages, you’ll find descriptions for statewide projects, Internet resources and links of interest, county fair exhibit suggestions, state specialist contacts, and other suggested 4-H resources.

How to Select 4-H Projects

1) Make a list of things you like to do or want to learn more about. Talk over your list with your parents, leaders and friends. They may recognize some special things you are good at that you don’t even realize you do well.

2) Compare your list with the projects described in the Rock County 4-H Project Guide. Ask your-

self if you have the equipment, money, and time to do the projects that sound interesting.

3) When you’re ready to sign up for projects, ask your club organizational leader or parent to help you sign up on-line at https://wi.4honline.com and choose from the drop down menu of projects.

Please note: First year 4-H members in grades 3 - 5 who have not been Cloverbuds may enroll in up to two (2) 4-H projects. The maximum number of projects for all other members is seven (7) only if one of the projects is Youth Leadership. Otherwise the maximum number of projects for all other members is six (6). Clubs may not set any additional project enrollment requirements. Members on probation may enroll in only one (1) project. And remember, you’ll learn more than “subject matter” as you complete your projects. You’ll learn many “life skills” that you’ll use every day of your life, such as understanding yourself, solving problems, communicating better, making decisions, and working with others.

Good luck in your project selections. Have a great 4-H year!
