THE COMING SEASON

As the season approaches for opening the clubhouse at Summerville and yachtsmen are beginningto stir themselves preparatory to an active summer

on and near the water, the officials of the RochesterYacht Club beg to call the attention of all membersto the many features that have been planned forthe good of the sport and the enjoyment of

everyone affiliated with the club. lt has beenthe aim of officials and committees of this organ-ization each year to set a new standard forthe succeeding season, to improve and strengthenthe association and do everything possible consist-ent with resource, to establish a service in every

department that would meet with general approval.Last season, in the face of adverse circumstances

a great deal was accomplished to bring about thedesired result. ln spite of discouraging factors thatseemed well -nigh impossible of circumvention, many improvements were made and a service was

established that was concededly the best in the his-

tory of the club. The experiment proved costly, butit reduced the complaints materially and an effortwill be made again this season to set an even highermark, the idea being to serve the best there is,under the assumption that our members will showtheir appreciation by an increased patronage thatwill warrant continued efforts to improve the gen-eral tone of the house.

By an unfortunate circumstance there will be no

race for the Canada's Cup this year and in a

special circular sent out to our members and yacht-men in general we have explained the controversythat resulted in the withdrawal of the challenge bythe Canadians.

The incident, which happily was marked with

4

THE COMING SEASON

the best of good feeling, requires no further com-

ment, and an overburdened public welcomes its

passing. But as much as we deplore the situation which

makes a race for the Canada's Cup impossible, we

turn with great enthusiasm to the big power boatrace which will be conducted under our manage-ment in August for the "Rudder Cup." Ourfellow member, l/lr. 'l`homas Fleming Day, wholast season greatly stimulated yacht racing on LakeOntario by offering a handsome cup for a long dis-tance race, has again come forward with another

trophy, this time for a 300 mile motor boat race, which will be started and finished at our club housestation. It will be the first contest of the kindever held on Lake (i)ntario and will attract con-

testants from all over the Great Lakes and theAtlantic Seaboard, to say nothing of the manypleasure craft that will be on hand to vitness theevent. Particulars of this great race will be avail-able later and we feel confident that as much in-terest will be manifested in this contest as has beenshown on the occasion of our splendid regattas ofthe past.

V/'ork on the Basin anchorage has been progress-ing slowly for the very good reason that no arrange-ments have yet been made with a dredging firm to

undertake the contract. l_t has been deemed ad-visable to wait until such a firm has other workto do in this vicinity, when the task of opening upand dredging our property can be done at a mini-mum of cost to us. Negotiations looking to thisend have been entered into with out~of~town con-

tractors and it is confidently expected that at a no

distant date we will see a fine anchorage groundfor our ever-growing fleet.

CAFE SERVICE

The cafe this season will be in charge of l/Ir. L.P. Heck, formerly of the Powers Hotel, who comes

to us highly recommended as an efficient steward, and who knows the needs of this department ofthe club's service. One fact should be impressedon the minds of our members in connection withthe cafe service, and that is, when contemplatinggiving a dinner party for four or five or more, tryand arrange to give the steward advance notice so

that he may know how many to count on, andabout what the dinner is to consist of. ,lfor in-

stance, if you are desirous of having a dinner servedfor your friends on the veranda, and wish certaindishes served that are somewhat out of the ordinary,a day's notice to the steward will enable him to

procure the best and the freshest there is on themarket and result in much better satisfaction to

you and your party. Nearly all of our membersrealize that the patronage is very meager during the

week, except on club nights and the week end, and

consequently it is entirely out of the question to

carry a big stock of seasonable foods _ the losswould be too great. l'lOVCVCl', with the exercise ofa little advance thought, the cafe can be made to

produce the best there is and served in first-class

style. Sometimes a few hours' notice would be

sufficient; if you are going down in your auto, a

telephone message to the steward before you start

would facilitate matters greatly and tend to discour-

age complaints. On club nights, Saturdays and

Sundays, it is expected that the service will be more

satisfactory, but there will be less cause for dissatis-faction if our members vill observe the custom

outlined above.
