It’s been a busy month for mewith my Ma breaking her arm andchapter business. At this month’sBoard meeting I appointed BruceVanApeldoornaschairofthefinancecommitteewithJoePecksteppinguptohelp.Thefinancecommittee will belookingtocomeupwith a format forthe finance reportthat will be easyfor themembers tounderstand. Theywill also be prepar-ing for the upcom-ing budget for2007. I just wantto remind every-onethatthebudgetrequest forms havegone out and aredue in the chapterbyNovember1thisyear.Ifyouhavenotreceived one pleasecontactBarb in theoffice or myself.Anotherbigprojectwe will be doing isupdating our pro-cedure manual andif anyone wouldlike to help pleaselet me know or ifyou see things thatyouthinkshouldbechanged also let usknow. OnSeptember7ChuckMacalusoput on a great class for thosemem-berswhohadvolunteeredtobetourguidesatourmemorialonSeptember8. I thought the day went greatwith booths set up on the grounds,with information and product sales.A plaque was presented to me forthe chapter from County ExecutiveMaggieBrooksforoursponsorshipof

theevent.Ithinktheshowingbythepublicwasgreatwithpeoplecomingandgoingalldaylong. On September 11 Chuck andIgavea tourofourmemorial to exSenatorMaxCleland fromGeorgia,a triple amputee fromVietnam andaproudCavalrymemberof theUSArmy. In his words, “This is with-

outadoubtthebestmemorial in thecountry.” I thinkthat September 8was a turning pointinourmemorialthatwillgiveChapter20more of an owner-ship in the memo-rial. As of this writingI’m looking forwardtotheupcoming25year celebration ofourchapterandhopeall have enjoyed it.The celebrationwasa lot of hard workbyalotofourchap-ter members and Ithankthemforthat.I justhopeallofuswill be around forthe 50 year celebra-tion. What a yearthatwouldbe,mostof us in our 80sand some of us inour 90s. Canes andwheelchairs, danc-ing to the hits ofthe 60s, soft foodand lots of bath-

I just hope all of us will be around for the 50 

year celebration. What a year that would be, most of us in our 80s and some of us in our 90s. Canes and wheelchairs, dancing to the hits of the 60s, soft food and lots of bathroom calls.

ItisnowtimetostartthinkingaboutVeteransDay.Yes,onceagainit’s only around the corner. Wewill be holding our annual serviceon Saturday, November 11th at6:00 PM at the Vietnam VeteransMemorial in Highland Park. Wedo not read names at this service,onlyonMemorialDay.VolunteersfromtheMarchingUnitareneededto partake in the ceremony. PleaseE-mail or phone me right awayif you will be partaking in theceremony. Hopefully once againthisyear,immediatelyfollowingtheservice we will have our tailgatepartyagain.LastyearRalphPascaleoffered to make chili and all thefixingsforthoseinattendanceafterthe ceremony. It really turned outtobeagreat ideaandweallhadagoodtime.Pleaseplanonattendingonce again, the Marching Unit’sTailgatepartyaftertheceremonyonVeteransDay. MembersoftheMarchingUnitwereinvitedtoattendaserviceandceremony at Sampson State Parkthis year. The event was held onSaturday,August8th. Itwascalled‘ASalutetotheTroops’.Theyheldasmallparade,consistingofseverallocalColorGuardsandtheBuffaloSoldiers and us from Rochester.Theyhadsomevendorstheretosellfood andmilitaryT’s.While therewewere able to tour themuseum.Itwasquiteaninterestingday.Mostimportantly though, our troops,pastandpresentwerehonoredandremembered. There is talk of itoccurring annually and if they do,theywill inviteusback.Hopefullynextyearwewillhavealargergroupinattendance. OnSaturdayAugust 26th, theannual Marching Unit picnic washeldatIraJacobson.Eventhoughitwasnotaswellattendedasinyears

past,itwasstillagoodtimeforallthose that did attend. Food wasgood, company was good, weatherwasgood,andagreattimewashadby all.The highlight of this year’spicnicwasthepresentationofacer-tificate making someone in atten-dancean‘HONORARYMARINE’.ItwasdecidedbyseveralMARINEmembersoftheMarchingUnitthatthis title shouldbebestowedupon

someone who has been fighting atoughfightforthepastseveralyearswith first one disease and now asecondone.Thesecondhascausedthispersontoundergochemother-apy treatments, resulting in hairloss.Nowthatithasstartedtogrowback, I can remember this personcommentingtomeandsayingthatshecalleditherMarinehaircutandthat she wore it like ‘A Badge of

So she knows that she is notfightingthiswaraloneandthatherfellowMarinesareintherefightingwith her.Well, her husband Dick,(former Army) has called me tocomplain that she has been wak-ing him up playing that key ringat0500hours(that’s5AMtoyou

civilians) and telling him that it’stimetogooutanddohismorningrun.Yougottaloveher!SoMarines,whenever you see Sue, be sure togiveherabig“SEMPERFI”! BesuretocheckyourNovemberissue of the BTL for a full reportand pictures from the 10th annu-al trip to the Wall, for NationalPOW/MIA Recognition Day, andalsoonthe10thanniversaryofthededicationoftheVietnamVeteransMemorialinHighlandPark. TheHonorGuardwillresumemeetingagainattheOctobermem-bershipmeeting.Wemeet upstairsatIraat7:00PMbeforetheregularmembership meeting. All HonorGuardmembersareaskedtoattendandanyoneconsideringjoiningtheHonorGuardiswelcometoattendaswell.

A total of 782 U.S. personnelhavebeenaccountedforsince1975.Weallknowthatsomewillneverberecovered or accounted for as theirbodieswere lostoverwateror frag-mented inanexplosionandamul-titude of other things that can oc-cur.But, thismonthonemorewasaccounted forandonemore familyfoundclosure. MajorBurkeHMorgan,USAF,was lost while on an armed recon-naissancemissionoverLaosonAu-gust22,1967,whileflyinganA-26AInvaderaircraft.MajorMorgan’sre-mainswere excavated fromaburialsite near his downed aircraft andturnedoverbytheLaoGovernment

I won’t mentionnamesbutyouareallinmythoughtsespeciallythismonthofSeptember. Thethankyoulettersarestillgo-ingout.Wehavesent75lettersoutthusfar.Ifyouseeahouseorbusi-ness that flies the POW/MIA andAmericanflagspleasesendmetheirhouse number and street and zipcodeortownname.Iwillsendthemaletterofthanks. Also, at our monthly meetingthe flag give-away is continuing. Anameisdrawnandtherecipientre-ceivesa3x5Americanflagand2x3POW/MIA flag. The only condi-tionsarethatyouhaveaplacetoflythem,andthatyouhavenotreceivedaflagsetinthepast12months,alsooneperfamily.Thisisonewaythatwe are trying to increase awarenessof this issue. beencommemorated.Whatanout-standing achievement and a truetributetothededicationandgivingspiritofourmembers.Whetherrais-ing funds from day one or helpingand honoring others with a “what-ever it takes” attitude, we have allstepped up whenever needed. Thestrengthandspiritofthischapterareawesome.

Paul Partridge for hisrecentdonationsof$250.00totheguysat205. Chapter 20 recently donated$100 to Chapters 205, 489 (At-tica) and 603 (Groveland) to helpdefrayexpensesandwejustreceivedathankyoufromJimStrollo,long-timeChapter603 staff advisor.Hisservice to VVA and constant influ-ence on 603 should also be recog-nized. The Vietnam Veterans GroupSan Quentin recently had electionsand we wish the newly elected of-ficers well. According to Jeff Lang-nese, their chapter received a nicethankyou letter fromLt.Col.LoriNoyes,RamsteinAirForceBase,forthe100phonecardsthattheVVG-SQdonatedtowoundedtroops.TheGolden Gate Chapter of the 82nd

Ernie Bullock is due to be released on August 30, 2006 and will be reunited with his family in Auburn. His wife Regina correctly predicted several months ago that he would be 

granted parole. I do not doubt he will lead a highly successful and 

productive life. According to Regina, Ernie will be attending some seminary 

classes at Roberts Wesleyan College here in Rochester. Ernie’s contributions to 

VVA while incarcerated at Auburn for 20 years and later at Groveland are 

indeed legendary. He led the old fashioned way, by 

personal example... We wish Ernie and his family the best of luck.

Airborne Assn. also assisted in get-tingadiscountfromWalmartonthephone cards. Of the 100 cards, 40each were donated by the VVGSQandthe82ndAirborneAssn.and20byWalmart.Itisinterestingtonotethat this whole process was startedbyanarticle inVVAChapter205’sNovember2005newsletterdetailingtheneedsofwoundedIraqiveterans.Greatjoballaround,guys!Youhavetopickyourspotsbutyoucanreallymake the systemworkwhen every-oneisgoinginthesamedirection. Things seemtobegoingprettywell forChapter190,Atmore,Ala-bamaandweare in regularcontactwith Craig McLaren there. In theirrecent newsletter The Eagle Speaks,Chapter 20’s renowned Fred Elliotwas recognized for providing themwith VVA’s updated incarceratedchapterslist.Fredisalongtimesup-porter of this committee, has gonein to visit incarcerated veterans onaregularbasisandprovidesuswitha strong voice at National. Andto think Ken Moore and I almostcost him the election at Anaheimyearsbackwhenwecampaignedforhim….. Andfinally,weallneedtoonceagain thankBTL editorBruceMc-Danielforhisoutstandingcontribu-tions to veterans incarcerated. Weknow thatmany incarcerated chap-ters receive this newsletter and itspositiveimpactontheseguysshouldnot be underestimated. It is indeeda“greatrag”andBrucedoesgrinditoutmonthaftermonth…yearafteryear….

I’m happy to report that the worst of the foodstorageproblemhasbeentakencareof.OneSaturdayasmallgroupassembledandsortedthroughthehugegaylordbytheshippingdoors.Thiswasacollectionofapprox.100whitepostal servicebins filledwithbagsofgroceries...the100ismyguess.Icanonlysaythatbythetimewewerefinished,itfeltlikeathousand.Inanyevent,thesebinscontainedtheproceedsofthepostoffice-sponsoredfooddrivefromthispastspring. Notonlywasthegaylordemptied,sowasthestoreroom. Lots of things were discarded. All perishables(rice,pasta,cakemixes,etc)weretakentoSt.Joseph’sHouseonSouthAvenue, a local food cupboard/soup

kitchen/emergency shelter that serves the poor andhomelessinRochester. The goods that are left in the store room are setaside for the Thanksgiving baskets. These goods arecannedandbottledthingsthatthemicecannotdam-age. My heartfelt thanks to those who volunteered togetthisjobdone,especiallytoPat,Nelson,Pete,CecilandNick,whospentmanyhoursatthestoretocom-plete this task.And thanks to thosewhooffered,butwhoseschedulespreventedthemfromgettinginvolved.IalsowanttomentionthatGarywasterrificwithhishelpasweplowedthroughthismountainofstuff. So,that’sthatforthefoodstorageproblem.We’llhavetodecidehowtohandletheThanksgivingbasketssoon,butthatwillbesimplebycomparison.:-)
