The Inspectorate aims to provide a high level of confidence in the robust details scheme. It is

effectively an additional layer of consumer protection which does not replace, but is

supplementary to, the responsibilities of building control bodies and warranty providers. It involves

the collection and review of performance data

Visual Inspections.

robustdetails

Green : These are plots that when inspected comply fully with the Robust Detail.

Amber : These are plots where the inspector has identified slight deviations from the Robust Detail that could be easily put right and the builder agrees to do so within twenty eight days. In these cases the inspector is of the view that the fault or faults identified would

not have any significant reduction on the sound insulation performance.

Red : These are plots where the inspector has identified significant deviation from the Robust Detail which is likely to lead to a

significant reduction in performance.

Green visual inspections = 72.3%

Amber visual inspections = 17.1%

89.4% of all Robust Details are built correctly

or so nearly perfect as makes no difference.

Red visual inspections = 10.6%

Out of the 10.6% red visual inspections only

2.1% would actually translate to a failed test.

Green CategoryIn this category the test results meet or exceed the requirements of the RD

performance standards. Specifically:-

47 dB DnT,w + Ctr or greater and/or 60 dB L’nT,w or lower.

Amber CategoryResults in the Amber Category fail to meet the requirements of the RD performance

standards but satisfy the requirements of the Building Regulations Part E. Specifically:-

45 or 46 dB DnT,w + Ctr and/or 61 or 62 dB L’nT,w.

Red CategoryResults in the Red Category have failed to meet the requirements of the Building

Regulations Part E. Specifically:-

44 dB DnT,w + Ctr or lower and/or 63 dB L’nT,w or greater.

Robust Details Ltd (RDL) monitors the construction of a sample of robust details by carrying out visual inspections of, and acoustic testing on, a percentage of plots registered.

Acoustic testing of E-WM-7 has identified cases of unacceptable levels of acoustic performance where some types of wall tie have been used. RDL has therefore, taken the step of temporarily suspending E-WM-7 for the registration of new plots, or amending existing plot registrations from another RD type to E-WM-7, pending further investigations. It is anticipated that a revised version of the E-WM-7 pattern will be published once these investigations have been completed.

Our investigations to date have shown that an acoustic performance sufficient to satisfy the requirements of Robust Details has been achieved where the two leaves of the cavity separating wall are untied. To date, there have been no reported under performing tests using this form of construction. However the suitability of this approach in any particular case should be based on appropriate advice from a structural engineer.

Should you wish to adopt this form of construction, outside of the robust details scheme, we would strongly advise that you seek the block manufacturers guidance. It would also be necessary to consult with your building control body about their likely requirements for pre-completion testing.
