21Introduction – EN1317
• CEN published EN1317-1 and -2 in ‘98
• EN1317 is a performance standard for road restraint systems
• The experience of applying EN1317 (some hundred tests performed) raised some questions
• To answer to such questions new scientific knowledge is needed
• This requires a research project

Questions to be answered
• Relevance of EN1317 to safety in real life accidents
• Uncertainty of vehicle acceleration measurements in crash tests
• Repeatability of tests made in different laboratories
• Final choice of a Severity Criterion

21The Project ROBUST
is funded by EU
• The need of research was firstly acknowledged by WG1
• WG1 promoted a European Reserch Project
• A Dedicated Call was published in 2000 under Measurement and Testing
• The proposal was submitted in fall 2001
• The Program started in February 2002

21Project objectives
• Consider the relevance of EN1317 in respect of real life and provide data to assist updating
• Develop knowledge and understanding on some of the questions which are still open to interpretation in EN1317
• Define improved methodologies for measurements and data acquisition in impact tests
• Improve reliability and general acceptance of computational mechanics applications for impacts against vehicle restraint systems
• Develop a sound and generally acceptable scientific basis for the standard severity criterion for acceptance of road restraint systems

21Work Packages
• WP1 Barrier performance from real life accidents– Large number of single vehicle accidents on road
restraint systems, with little detail– Very small number of well selected accidents with full
detail, to be reconstructed by full scale tests and computational mechanics
• WP2 Collection of test data from EU laboratories– Data and experience from test performed in
accordance with EN1317– Comparative examination to identify and prioritize
research items
• WP3 Instrumentation and measurement– Effect on measurements of the vibrations of the
accelerometer mounting block– True filtering techniques vs moving average

Work Package 4 – Purpose
• Evaluate the repeatability of tests
• Evaluate the effect of different vehicles on test results (light and heavy vehicles)
• Provide full scale test data for the validation of computer models
• Reproduce a real life accident to help reconstruction

21Concluding Remarks
• Project progress is ahead of schedule
• Research is well focused on some crucial items
• Results will allow a significant step forward
• The final results will include recommendations for upgrading EN1317
• Such recommendations will be submitted to TG1 for review and subsequently to WG1
