Integrated smart system for expansion jointsIntroduc on

Bridge expansion joints compensate the de-forma ons of a bridge rela ve to the ends ofthe bridge. They ensure the con nuity of thecarriageway (serviceability) whilst avoidingrestraint loads. Their life expectancy dependson tra c loading, accumulated movements,clima c condi ons, and above all the type ofexpansion joint and the quality of its design,fabrica on and installa on.

The use of a ROBOSMART monitoring sys-tem can enable the life-cycle cost of an ex-

pansion joint to be op mised. Using sucha system, the structures behaviour can beassessed on the basis of con nuously meas -ured parameters, with data viewable onlineat any me of day or night.

Previously installed expan -sion joints can also be retro ed with anSHM system where required.
