On January 29, 2010, AVMD students participated in a cultural diversity assembly. The goal of the assembly was to help the stu-dents appreciate the diversity of our country, their cultural heri-tage, and the advantages of living in the USA where we can en-joy different food, styles, languages, literature, art, and music. The assembly began with a Power Point by Mrs. Woodley to the lyrics and music of the Black Eyed Peas’ song, One Tribe. The Student Council presented peace symbols crafted by Mrs. Johnson to the students who were selected by their peers as “Most Toler-ant Student of the Month- D.J. McCroy, Chelsey Kirby and Lety Montana. Wearing traditional clothing from several countries, students showed how people from other countries dress in a fashion show. Following the assembly, the students made a peace sign and the letters AVMS for a panoramic school picture. The morning ended with an International Food Fair where students tasted foods as var-ied as sushi, tamales, Italian cookies, and chocolate from a choco-late fountain.

The Office of the Pima County School Superintendent features an outstanding educator that is nomi-nated by his or her peers, administra-

tor, parents, or others. This Week's Educator Spotlight: Mrs. Georgina Woodley, Altar Valley Middle School, 6th and 7th Grade Social Studies "George" is continuously striving to integrate authentic and creative strategies for student engagement in her classroom. Technology is used everyday in creative, engaging ways such as her unique daily visitor created by George with it's own customized voice, who talks to the class giving hints to the meaning of the new vocabu-lary for the day. Students create PowerPoint and podcasts as well as other content based technology projects. Not only are her classroom skills outstanding, she has also volun-teered to tutor elementary students and has a group of high-risk middle school students that she mentors.

I was truly honored when my former profes-sors at the State Univer-sity of New York at

Geneseo asked me to co-author the fourth edition of Introduction to Communication Disorders. It was a challenging but very fun project to take part in. This textbook is written primarily for undergraduate students who are beginning their coursework in the field of speech-language pathology. The text pro-vides an overview of communication and feeding/swallowing disorders in children and adults, and describes how speech-language pathologists assess and treat these disorders throughout an individual’s lifespan. This edition of the textbook is also available inter-nationally for the first time which we are very ex-cited about. We hope it will be a big success in col-leges and universities throughout the world.

Quotations to Ponder Who will tell whether one happy moment of love or the joy of breathing or walking on a bright morning and smelling the fresh air, is not worth all the suffer-ing and effort which life implies. — Erich Fromm I arise in the morning torn between a desire to im-prove the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day. —Elwyn Brooks The miracle is not to fly in the air, or to walk on the water, but to walk on the earth. —Chinese Proverb
