introduction

Best known for:

being the first black man in major league baseball

3 Key qualities

1. Brave2. has perseverance3. holds on to dreams

What I find interesting:

He plays baseball

I CHOSE THIS PERSON BECAUSE...

he plays baseball and my grandpa got to meet him. he showed people that black people and white people are equal.

i am not concerned with your liking or disliking me... all i ask is that you respect me as a human being.

_ jackie robinson

some people on pepper street in pasadena, CA were very mean to black people. one family threw rocks at jackie because he had yelled at a girl who called him a realy, realy bad name.

i think he felt mad because the girl insulted him bucause of the color of his skin.

dont yell at my daghter!

I read that after jackie retired from baseball, he helped black people have their rights. he opened a bank that helped black people who were poor have enough money to survive.

I think that it is generous of jackie to help other people because he was rich and he could have just used his money for himself but he didn't.

thank you so much!

I dont have enough

money to buy a house

looks like you need a

loan

i read that jackie made a promise to branch rickey that he would not fight back even though people would be very, very mean to him. they would do horrible things to him like throw rocks and kick them with their very sharp cleats, but he said he would play.

I think it is brave of him to make that promise because he knew people would do really bad things to him.

I will play!

and I will not fight

back

I read that people insulted him like saying black people are dumb and that he is never going to play baseball as good as a white player. but, he knew that it was not true, so he just ignored them.

I think he has a strong mind to be able to hear those insults and still think what he thought. a lot of people said that, but he did not believe them. he just thought what he thought.

I read that he got a lot of letters threatening to kill him or his family if he kept playing. people threw rocks at him and beat him. they tried to kill him, but he kept playing baseball.

i think he has a lot of perseverance to keep playing because he could just go home and be too scared to play baseball again. but, he kept playing.

now baseball players, black or white, are treated equally. they play at the same parks. they don't have a negro league separate from major leagues. the white stadium seating is not separate from the black seating. every baseball player respects the other ones black or white.

he got drafted into the army and black people weren't being treated the same way as the white people in the army. he talked to the army head and talked to judges in court and gained some rights for black army men.

one time jackie got into an argument with a white policeman, and he had to go to jail for a night. a new minister came to his mom's church and they started talking. he started to believe in god, and this helped him control his temper.

jackie showed perseverence when he kept playing when people did bad things to him.

jackie showed compassion when he opened a bank for poor black people when he retired.

TOOK ACTION BY...jackie MADE A DIFFERENCE because he made it so black people could play major leage baseball.

I was a change maker when i wrote a note to the cheese company asking them to change their wrappers.

I'm similar to my change maker

because i love baseball.

my change maker

is connected to satchel paige

because he also helped make

baseball fair after jackie died.
