1 PANORAMA MK2 RUDDER ANGLE INDICATORThe Panorama Mk2 Rudder Angle Indicator is designed foroverhead mounting on the bridge. Panorama Mk2 substitutesthe previous model, Panorama. The splash proof ABS/PCblend cabinet contains 3 identical scales, for accurate reading ofrudder angles from any position in the wheel-house. Theindicator is designed for rudder angles up to 45 degrees oneither side of midship position. Scales for 60, 70 and 90 degreesare also available as option. The indicator has internal dial light(LED’s), adjustable by built in dimmer accessible on the rearplate (lid) of the indicator.
Optional remote dimming from a control panel can bearranged.

1.2 Mounting instructionsThe Panorama Mk2 indicator is designed to be mounted on theceiling of the bridge. The cables are run through the rear panelor through the ceiling.
Make sure that the instrument is mounted on an even surfaceso that the instrument housing does not get wry.
1.3 ConnectionsThe Panorama Mk2 is protected from ESD (static electricity). I.e.when mounting no special protection from ESD is needed.

After dismantling the rear panel (lid) the connection terminalsare visible. Wire gauges between 0.5 (AWG20) and 2.5 mm2
(AWG12) can be used for the terminals.
The electrical wiring between the PANORAMA MK2 indicatorand the RF14XU Rudder Feedback Unit is shown in Figure 1-4,Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6.
Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6 show complete rudder angle indicatorsystems including Robertson RI9 panel/bulkhead mountindicators.
If remote dimmer is preferred, the build-in dimmer can beremoved from the indicator (after dismantling the rear plate)and mounted e.g. in a control panel. A plug to seal the hole inthe rear plate is included on delivery.
1.4 Adjustment and controlWhen the instrument has been properly connected it must bechecked for correct indication and eventually adjusted.
Make sure the pointer is in exact centre position when the 24VPower supply is disconnected. If not, gently turn themechanical zero adjustment screw until it does.
Caution ! Do not turn this screw more than ±±±±90°°°° from it’s originalposition.
Note ! Before making further adjustment to the indicator, the RudderFeedback unit must be correctly installed and aligned (ref section 2.3)and adjusted for midship position (ref. section 2.6).
Turn the rudder to maximum position, port and starboard.
Note ! The instrument reading should be the same as the rudder angle. Ifnecessary R16 can be adjusted to make the instrument read the actualrudder angle. Potentiometer R16 is placed on the right side of thethree blue potentiometers. See Figure 1-2.
Remember to remount the rear panel plate with all 4 screws toensure the IP66 protection of the instrument.
To reverse the indicator deflection, the brown lead to terminal 8of the RF14XU terminal board must be connected to terminal 9,see Figure 2-4.

2 RF14XU RUDDER FEEDBACK UNIT
2.1 GeneralThe rudder feedback unit transmits a signal proportional to therudder angle. It is mounted close to the rudder stock and ismechanically connected to the rudder by a transmission link ina 1:1 ratio.
The RF14XU Rudder Feedback Unit consists of a glass-reinforced non-flammable polyester housing with a mountingplate of seawater resistant aluminium. It contains apotentiometer, limit switches and an electronic (drive) module. The electronic module contains a voltage section and afrequency section.
The voltage section outputs a voltage to the rudder angleindicator(s) which is proportional to the rudder angle. Thevoltage varies ±9 volts with half the supply voltage as reference.
The frequency section generates a variable frequency signalwith 3400 Hz as midposition reference. This section is only usedif a Robertson autopilot is connected to RF14XU. The signalvaries at a rate of 20 Hz/degree, increasing when the ruddermoves to port and vice versa.
The shaft of the Feedback Unit is free to travel 360 degrees, however only ±90 degrees from midposition are used for signalcontrol.
RF14XU is equipped with two sets of micro switches, which canbe used as electrical limit switches for the steering gear.

2.3 InstallationBefore installation check that the alignment mark on themounting plate agrees with the mark on the shaft. Bring therudder to midship position. The feedback unit should bemounted on a plane surface and secured by bolts through thethree holes in the mounting plate. It should be linked to therudder in accordance with Figure 2-2. It is important that thelinkage is linear, i.e. the A-a and D-d are pairs of equal length. This will give a 1:1 ratio between the rudder travel and that ofthe feedback unit shaft.

2.4 WiringWiring to the RI9 and the Panorama Mk2 Rudder AngleIndicators is shown in Figure 1-4. Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6 alsoshow how a combination of RI9 and Panorama Mk2 can beconnected to the RF14XU. The cables are carried through cableglands and connected to the terminal board. To avoid anymechanical damage, the cables should be run in a conduitbetween the rudder feedback unit and the rudder indicator(s).The cable screen must be connected to the internal groundterminal. Ref. picture below.
Figure 2-3 Screen termination
Note ! If the RF14XU and the indicators are powered from an unsmoothed24V supply, the enclosed 470µF capacitor must be connected acrossthe voltage supply terminals (+, –) to avoid off-set on the indicatorreading.
2.5 Other rudder anglesThe RF14XU is normally delivered for ±45 degrees rudderangle (violet, brown and pink wires are not connected). For ±60degrees, connect brown wire to terminal 10, for ±70 degrees, connect pink to terminal 10 and for ±90 degrees, connect theviolet wire to terminal 10. White wire must remain connected. To reverse the indicator deflection, the brown wire to terminal 8must be connected to terminal 9. All the above refer toconnections between the terminal board and the internal ofRF14XU, see Figure 2-4

Note ! Inside the Feedback Unit cover, a piece of moisture protecting spongeis attached. The sponge produces a corrosion preventive gas, and toincrease the long-life efficiency of the gas, avoid keeping the unit openover long time periods.
2.6 AdjustmentsAfter having tightened all mechanical parts and connected allcables, the following adjustment must be carried out:
1. Check that the rudder is set to midship position.
2. Measure the voltage between "U" and "+", respectively "–" onthe RF14XU terminal board. If the two measured voltages donot have the same numerical value, loosen the two clampingscrews on the potentiometer and turn the potentiometerhousing. (Figure 2-5 pos. 5) until the same numerical value ismeasured. The RF14XU is now set to midposition. Tighten thetwo clamping screws.
After installation, the cable glands should be sealed with siliconto prevent water from seeping in. Also apply silicon grease tothe gasket between the bottom and top cover.
