Beginning in January, 2017, all students seeking a regular diploma must take a civics test and

score at least 70% as a requirement to graduate.

All juniors must take the ACT as a requirement for a regular diploma.

CLASSIFICATION OF STUDENTS

Students will be classified by both tenure in the school program and by credits earned. Year of entry will be the basis for determining graduation requirements. Classification is done at the beginning of fall term and is for one full year, with the exception of students in their fourth year who may move within range of graduation during the school year. Freshman--A student who has satisfactorily completed the eighth grade. Sophomore--A student who is in the second year of high school and has satisfactorily completed 6 credits. Junior--A student who is in the third year of high school and has satisfactorily completed 12 credits. Senior--A student who is in the fourth year of high school and has satisfactorily completed 20 credits. Graduating Senior--A student who is in at least the fourth year of high school and in range of graduation- SENIORS: Rising seniors must be certain that they are enrolled in all courses needed to meet graduation requirements. Counselors will assist in planning schedules to meet these requirements, but the final responsibility belongs to the student.

NCAA FRESHMAN ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Graduating students who intend to continue their athletic careers at the college or university levels must understand that inter-collegiate associations and individual institutions may have specific eligibility requirements in regard to course requirements, grade point averages, and standardized test scores. The counseling office at each high school can answer these questions for potential student-athletes on an individual basis. The following eligibility requirements are only a summary of initial eligibility for the NCAA. By the end of a student’s junior year, he or she should register with the NCAA Clearinghouse (www.ncaaclearinghouse.net), where all eligibility decisions are made. Students must also understand that colleges and universities may have additional requirements for admission and eligibility. 1. Students must complete 16 “core-course” requirements to be eligible for a Division 1 institution. 2. Students must have a minimum GPA and standardized test score on file at the Clearinghouse. 3. It is the student’s responsibility to insure that courses for which he/she registers are compliant

with NCAA Clearinghouse eligibility as well as the prospective institution. Dropping or changing classes after registration may jeopardize this eligibility. More information can be obtained from the athletic director.

Community colleges remain open admission to all high school graduates. However, these same high school units are recommended for students entering community college programs designed for transfer to a baccalaureate program. Students with deficiencies who are admitted to community college transfer programs must remove any deficiencies, for elective credit only, prior to receiving the associate degree in a transfer program. State Board of Regents Schools -- Austin Peay, East Tennessee, University of Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee State, and Tennessee Tech. UT System -- UT Knoxville, UT Martin, and UT Chattanooga Requirements for other colleges and universities may vary. It is the student’s responsibility to check private and out-of-state schools for information regarding specific requirements.

Mathematics

Four (4)credits in mathematics are required for graduation: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a

senior level or STEM mathematics course. Students must have a math course each of their four

years in high school.

Tier III Math Intervention - 3121 Prerequisite: Determined by school data team. Course Description: This elective course is designed to support students’ learning of the mathematical skills necessary to be successful in high school mathematics courses. Algebra I– 3102 Course Description: Algebra I A/B is a two semester rigorous math course that sets the foundation for all future math courses. By being spread out over two semesters, students will have time to cover the material required at a slower pace and thereby developing a strong foundation for the other math courses needed for college and career readiness. Students must take the state-mandated End-of-Course Algebra I test and successfully pass Algebra IB in order to meet the requirements for graduation. Algebra I A is considered an elective credit; students receive their math credit by successfully completing Algebra IB. (May be taught as an A/B course—31023 and 31024). Algebra I-Advanced – 3102A Course Description: Advanced Algebra I is a fast-paced, more rigorous math course that sets the foundation for the advanced math courses. It meets only one term of 18 weeks. Due to the fast pace and in-depth coverage of material, the student is expected to do more work outside of the classroom for successful completion of this course. Geometry - 3108 Course Description: This course teaches students to develop logical thinking skills by the use of undefined terms, definitions, postulates, and theorems. Higher level thinking skills are necessary for successful completion of Geometry as a foundation for upper level mathematics courses. (May be taught as an A/B course—31083 and 31084). Geometry Advanced – 3108A Course Description: Advanced Geometry includes all topics covered in standard Geometry with a more rigorous approach to geometric topics and a stronger emphasis on proofs. Due to the fast pace and the in depth coverage of material, the student is expected to do more work outside of the classroom for successful completion of the course. Algebra II - 3103 Course Description: Algebra II is a study of general topics of second year algebra. Successful completion of this course is required for entrance into Tennessee public colleges and universities. Algebra II is designed for students committed to entering some type of post high school academic program. Students will be expected to work many practice problems to ensure mastery. Key

algebraic concepts will be explored and expanded. The use of the graphing calculator is a vital part of this course. (May be taught as an A/B course—31033 and 31034). Algebra II Advanced – 3108A Course Description: This course teaches all topics of Algebra II at a significantly faster pace, in greater depth, and with supplemental topics. Strong analytical thinking skills beyond the rigors of algebraic computation are essential for this course, which strongly emphasizes the concept of proof. Due to the fast pace and in-depth coverage of material, the student is expected to do more work outside of the classroom for successful completion of this course. Bridge Math – 3181 Course Description: This course is designed to introduce concepts previously studied in a new approach. Connections will be made between concepts allowing for a more in-depth understanding of topics and for problem solving applications. Students will look at multiple representations of concepts, blend their new understanding of topics with applications, and have the opportunity to model contextual situations. Concepts to study will include linear and quadratic functions, similar triangles and proportions, angle properties, scientific notations, polynomial arithmetic, radical expressions and probability. This course is required for students who score below 19 on the Math portion of the ACT. Bridge S.A.I.L.S. Math – 3181S Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Course Description: Mathematical skills in this course are alignment with the Developmental Studies Program for Mathematics (DSPM) outcomes, the curriculum standards and are required in order to prepare a DSPM student for college level mathematics courses. These new skills are introduced in conjunction with appropriate mathematical concepts and related to previous learning. Applications of these skills should play a principal role in the learning and assessment process. Technology is used to strategically enhance the student’s understanding of core concepts via the use of multiple problem solving strategies. Finite Math –3182 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students for both college and the workplace. Students choosing this course would be less likely to enroll in a STEM Calculus course upon entering college. However, this course will provide a foundation for students entering a business application Calculus course or other general education mathematics course. Topics include Mathematical processes, number & operations, Algebra, Geometry & measurement, data analysis, statistics, and probability. Statistics –3136 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Course Description: This course introduces students to the basic concepts of both descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include collecting, displaying, interpreting, and analyzing data; surveys and experimental design; drawing conclusions about a population from a sample and predicting with data. Students must have a good understanding of equation solving and be comfortable working with functions and their graphs.

Pre-calculus –3126 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II. Course Description: This course combines topics from areas of higher mathematics, including trigonometry, complex numbers, and analytical geometry, sequences and series, probability, exponential and logarithmic functions, graphs, and vectors. Students who successfully complete this sequence will have a strong background for Calculus. Students who complete Pre-Calculus are expected to enroll in AP Calculus AB or Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Advanced Algebra & Trigonometry –3124 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II. Course Description: This course is designed for college-bound juniors or seniors that have completed Algebra II but need math review in preparation for college. The course reviews and extends concepts of Algebra II which includes the study of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Additional topics include matrices, mathematical modeling and sequences and series. Students who successfully complete this course should have the skills necessary for pre-calculus at the college level.

Advanced Placement Math Courses

(These courses may only be available at certain schools, virtually, or not at all)

AP Calculus AB –3127 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and either Pre-Calculus or Calculus. Course Description: This course is devoted mainly to the topics in differential and integral calculus. The scope of the course follows the topics listed in the College Board Advanced Placement Mathematics Course Description. Successful completion of this course will prepare students to take the AP exam with the possibility of earning college credit. Students must attempt the AP exam in order to receive AP credit on their high school transcript.

AP Calculus BC –3127 Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, either Pre-Calculus or Calculus, and AP Calculus AB: Course Description: This course reviews all the topics covered in AP Calculus AB plus additional objectives and additional topics. The scope of the course follows the topics listed in the College Board Advanced Placement Course Description. Successful completion of this course will prepare students to take the AP exam with the possibility of earning college credit. Students must attempt the AP exam in order to receive AP credit on their high school transcript.

Social Sciences

Three credits in social sciences are required for graduation: Economics, US Government and Civics,

United States History and Geography, and World History and Geography.

African American History - 3442

Course Description: Students will examine the life and contributions of African Americans from the

early 1600’s through modern America. Students will explore the influence of geography on slavery

and the growth of slavery on the American continent. Students will consider urban and rural African

American communities and institutions in the North and South leading up to and during the Civil

War. Students will investigate the rise and effects of Jim Crow and trace the impact of African

American migration through the early twentieth century. Students will explore the impact of the

Harlem Renaissance and the conditions and contributions of African Americans during the Great

Depression and World War II. Students will examine the successes and failures of the Civil Rights

Movement and consider the contemporary issues confronting African Americans.

Ancient History – 3402

Course Description: Students will examine the major periods of Ancient History from prehistoric times to 1500 AD/CE. Major emphasis will be given to the Neolithic Revolution, the development of river valley civilizations, the rise of Greece and Rome, and the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Contemporary Issues- 3435

Course Description: Students will use inquiry skills to examine the issues that impact the

contemporary world. Included in the course will be analysis of the historical, cultural, economic,

and geographic factors that have raised certain issues to levels of concern in our nation and around

the globe. Students will engage in research and problem solving in order to better understand and

assess significant current issues.

Economics - 3431 (1/2 credit)

Course Description: Students will examine the allocation of scarce resources and the economic

reasoning used by government agencies and by people as consumers, producers, savers, investors,

workers, and voters. Key elements of the course include the study of scarcity, supply and demand,

market structures, the role of government, national income determination, money and the role of

financial institutions, economic stabilization, and trade. Students will examine the key economic

philosophies and economists who have influenced the economies around the world in the past and

present. Informational text and primary sources will play an instrumental part of the study of

economics where it is appropriate.

Psychology - 3433 (1/2 credit)

Course Description: Students will study the development of scientific attitudes and skills, including

critical thinking, problem solving, and scientific methodology. Students will also examine the

structure and function of the nervous system in human and non-human animals, the processes of

sensation and perception, and life span development. Students will study social cognition,

influence, and relations. Students will examine social and cultural diversity and diversity among

individuals. Students will study memory, including encoding, storage, and retrieval of memory.

Students will also study perspectives of abnormal behavior and categories of psychological

disorders, including treatment thereof. Students will elaborate on the importance of drawing

evidence-based conclusions about psychological phenomena and gain knowledge on a wide array of

issues on both individual and global levels. Throughout the course, students will examine

connections between content areas within psychology and relate psychological knowledge to

everyday life. Students will explore the variety of careers available to those who study psychology.

Sociology - 3432 (1/2 credit)

Course Description: Students will explore the ways sociologists view society, and also how they

study the social world. In addition, students will examine culture, socialization, deviance and the

structure and impact of institutions and organizations. Also, students will study selected social

problems and how change impacts individuals and societies.

United States Government and Civics - 3417 (1/2 Credit)

Course Description: Students will study the purposes, principles, and practices of American

government as established by the Constitution. Students are expected to understand their rights

and responsibilities as citizens and how to exercise these rights and responsibilities in local, state,

and national government. Students will learn the structure and processes of the government of the

state of Tennessee and various local governments. The reading of primary source documents is a

key feature of United States Government and Civics standards.

United States History and Geography: Post-Reconstruction to the Present - 3416

Course Description: Students will examine the causes and consequences of the Industrial

Revolution and America’s growing role in world diplomatic relations, including the Spanish-

American War and World War I. Students will study the goals and accomplishments of the

Progressive movement and the New Deal. Students will also learn about the various factors that led

to America’s entry into World War II, as well as its consequences for American life. Students will

explore the causes and course of the Cold War. Students will study the important social, cultural,

economic, and political changes resulting from the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, and recent

events and trends that have shaped modern-day America. Additionally, students will learn the

causes and consequences of contemporary issues impacting their world today. Students will

continue to use skills for historical and geographical analysis as they examine American history since

Reconstruction with special attention to Tennessee connections in history, geography, politics, and

people. Students will continue to learn fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography

within the context of United States history. The reading of primary source documents is a key

feature of United States history standards. Finally, students will focus on current human and

physical geographic issues important in contemporary America and the global society.

World Geography - 3410

Course Description: Students will examine the global perspectives, basic concepts, and fundamental

questions of geography. Students will focus on the ways through which all places on Earth are

interconnected and how the human use of Earth's surface varies over space. Topics studied in the

course include physical processes, human populations and migration, regions of the world,

resources, and the tools used by modern geographers.

World History and Geography: The Industrial Revolution to the Contemporary World—3415

Course Description: Students will study the rise of the nation state in Europe, the French

Revolution, and the economic and political roots of the modern world. They will examine the origins

and consequences of the Industrial Revolution, nineteenth century political reform in Western

Europe, and imperialism in Africa, Asia, and South America. They will explain the causes and

consequences of the great military and economic events of the past century, including the World

Wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and the Russian and Chinese Revolutions. Finally,

students will study the rise of nationalism and the continuing persistence of political, ethnic, and

religious conflict in many parts of the world. Relevant Tennessee connections will be part of the

curriculum, as well as appropriate primary source documents. Students will explore geographic

influences on history, with attention given to political boundaries that developed with the evolution

of nations from 1750 to the present and the subsequent human geographic issues that dominate

the global community. Additionally, students will study aspects of technical geography such as GPS

and GIS, and how these innovations continuously impact geopolitics in the contemporary world.

Advanced Placement Social Science Courses

AP U.S. History –3440 Prerequisite: World History and Geography. Course Description: Rigorous and challenging classwork with a strong emphasis on extensive reading, writing and research skills is associated with this college-level course. AP level classes require more independent practice and outside reading than Honors level classes. Coursework requirements are guided by the College Board, therefore; students enrolled in this course are expected to take the College Board Advanced Placement Exam in May. AP US History integrates biographical, economic, social, political and cultural perspectives of American history from the Age of Exploration to the present. Students will be required to master the following historical skills: chronological reasoning, comparison and contextualization, creating arguments from evidence and interpretation and synthesis.

AP World History–3449 Prerequisite: None. Course Description: Rigorous and challenging classwork with a strong emphasis on extensive reading, writing and research skills is associated with this college-level course. AP level classes require more independent practice and outside reading than Honors level classes. Coursework requirements are guided by the College Board, therefore; students enrolled in this course are expected to take the College Board Advanced Placement Exam in May. AP World History is a comprehensive study of the progression of humans throughout the history of the leading civilizations of the world. Students will learn about the origins and consequences of the great military, economic and cultural events of the past centuries. Topics of study include the Renaissance, the Reformation, the rise of modern states, monarchies, the Enlightenment, revolution, WWI and WWII and its aftermath.

SCIENCE

Three (3) credits in science are required for graduation: Biology, Chemistry OR Physics, and one

other lab science.

Biology I -3210 Recommended prerequisites: Physical Science or Physical World Concepts

Course Description: Biology I is a laboratory science course that investigates the relationship

between structure and function from molecules to organisms and systems, the interdependence

and interactions of biotic and abiotic components of the environment, and mechanisms that

maintain continuity and lead to changes in populations over time. Students explore biological

concepts through an inquiry approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Technology & Engineering,

and Mathematics are taught in the context of the content standards for Cells, Interdependence,

Flow of Matter and Energy, Heredity, and Biodiversity and Change.

Biology II -3216 Recommended prerequisites: Biology I and Chemistry I Course Description: Biology II is a laboratory science course in which students engage in an in-depth

study of the principles of biology. This course emphasizes internal and external anatomical

structures and their functions, the environmental interaction of organisms, processes of living

things, mechanisms that maintain homeostasis, biodiversity, and changes in life forms over time.

Students explore biological concepts through an inquiry approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry,

Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics are taught in the context of the content standards for

Cells, Interdependence, Flow of Matter and Energy, Heredity, Biodiversity and Change, Comparative

Anatomy and Physiology, and Botany.

Chemistry I – 3221 Recommended prerequisites: Physical science, Algebra I

Course Description: Chemistry I is a laboratory science course in which students investigate the

composition of matter and the physical and chemical changes it undergoes. Students use science

process skills to study the fundamental structure of atoms, the way atoms combine to form

compounds, and the interactions between matter and energy. Students explore chemistry concepts

through an inquiry-based approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Mathematics, and Technology

& Engineering are taught in the context of the content standards for Atomic Structure, Matter and

Energy, and Interactions of Matter.

Chemistry II - 3224 Recommended prerequisites: Chemistry I, Algebra II Course Description: Chemistry II is a laboratory science course that builds on topics introduced in

Chemistry I. This course investigates chemical bonding and how the kinetic molecular theory and

intermolecular forces explain the physical and chemical characteristics of matter. Additional aspects

of chemical reactions including limiting reactants, percent yield, equilibrium, reaction rates, and

thermochemistry are considered. Students explore chemistry concepts through an inquiry-based

approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Mathematics, and Technology & Engineering are taught

in the context of the content standards for Structure of Matter, States of Matter, and Reactions.

Earth Science - 3204

Course Description: Earth Science is a laboratory science course that explores origins and the

connections between the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the earth system. Students

experience the content of Earth Science through inquiry-based laboratory investigations and focus

on topics associated with matter, energy, crystal dynamics, cosmic evolution, and structure, cycles,

geochemical processes, and the expanded time scales needed to understand events in the earth

system. Earth Science provides the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind needed for problem solving

and ethical decision making about scientific and technological issues. Embedded standards for

Inquiry and Technology & Engineering are taught in the context of the content standards for the

Universe, Energy in the Earth System, Cycles in the Earth System, and Geologic History.

Ecology - 3255 Recommended prerequisites: Physical or Environmental Science; Biology, Chemistry Course Description: Ecology is a laboratory science course that enables students to develop an

understanding of the natural and man-made environment and the environmental problems the

world faces. Students explore ecological concepts through an inquiry approach. Embedded

Environmental Science - 3260 Course Description: Environmental Science is a laboratory science course that enables students to

develop an understanding of natural and man-made environments and environmental problems

the world faces. Students explore environmental science concepts through an inquiry-based

of the content standards for Earth Systems, The Living World, Human Population, Water and Land

Geology - 3205 Recommended prerequisites: Earth or Physical Science; Biology, Chemistry Course Description: Geology is a laboratory science course that explores the origins and the

connections between the physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern the earth system.

Students explore the physical aspects of earth processes and cycles through open-ended field and

laboratory investigations. Understanding the importance of these processes and how they influence

humankind enables students to make sound decisions about both their community and the earth’s

Human Anatomy and Physiology – 3251 Recommended prerequisites: Biology I and Chemistry I

Course Description: Human Anatomy and Physiology is a laboratory science course that includes of an in-depth study of the body systems that maintain homeostasis from anatomical, physiological, and histological perspectives. Students explore anatomical and physiological concepts through an inquiry-based approach. AP-Biology - 3217 Recommended prerequisites: Biology I and Chemistry I Course Description: The AP Biology course is designed to enable you to develop advanced inquiry and reasoning skills, such as designing a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and connecting concepts in and across domains. to a two-semester college introductory biology course and has been endorsed enthusiastically by higher education officials AP-Chemistry - 3225 Recommended prerequisites: Chemistry I, Chemistry II. Course Description: The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. This course is taken with the idea in mind that students will take the AP Exam to receive college credit or placement at the student’s college of choice. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, in their first year, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register in courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses. Such credit and placement tied to the AP Chemistry exam could lead to students' readiness for and engagement in the study of advanced topics in subsequent college courses and eventually the achievement of a STEM degree and successful career.

Language Arts

Four (4) credits in English are required for graduation: (English I, English II, English III, English IV)

English I- 3001 Course Description: This course begins with a grammar review emphasizing mechanics and usage. Developing complex sentences will begin the writing curricula. Paragraph development will involve developing topic sentences into short paragraphs using formula writing. Students will be introduced to the elements of fiction in a short story unit that will prepare them to identify the same elements in subsequent works of literature. An informative research project will introduce the fundamentals of research. A poetry unit will introduce figurative language as well as other common poetic devices. Weekly vocabulary will emphasize identifying word parts and using context clues. English I Advanced is an option for students with qualifying scores on TCAP and EXPLORE. English II-3002 Course Description: This course is designed to develop students’ proficiency in writing paragraphs and the developing essays. Appropriate vocabulary assignments will be included. Literature assignments will include a variety of short stories and novels will be read. English II Advanced is an option for students who successfully completed English I Advanced. English III - 3003 Course Description: This course will include assignments from appropriate grade level vocabulary, composition and reading materials. Reading assignments will be chosen on a variety of topics from conventional American literature anthologies and library resources. Students will be encouraged to improve their speaking and listening skills. Newspapers may be used to stimulate an interest in current events. English III Advanced is an option for students who successfully completed English I Advanced.

Reading assignments will be chosen on a variety of topics from conventional British literature anthologies and library resources. Students will be encouraged to strengthen their speaking and listening skills. Special emphasis will be included on a variety of useful business related skills, such as completing forms, compiling data, completing resumes and writing reports. Newspapers and periodicals will be used. English IV Advanced is an option for students who successfully completed English I Advanced. Course Description: Students may earn an elective credit in this course designed to improve students’ decoding, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills through individualized learning pathways. Journalism - 3008 Prerequisite: Teacher Approval Course Description: This class involves a selected number of students who will produce the school yearbook. Basic layout, body copy, and print design will be taught. Speech - 3015 Course Description: This class assists the student to develop the skills to generate ideas, research topics, organize information, and prepare for oral presentations. Students prepare oral or published works, participate in group projects when appropriate, understand the key components of effective speaking skills (voice control, eye contact, tone, body language, etc.), as well as effective listening and feedback skills.

AP-Language and Composition – 3013 (satisfies English III graduation requirement) Course Description: This is an advanced writing course whose focus is the study of rhetoric and argumentation. Readings of selected nonfiction essays and American works of fiction (novels, short stories) are also required. Foreign Languages

Two (2) credits in the same foreign language are required for graduation Spanish I - 3021 Course Description: Through the introductory course in Spanish, students gain the ability to communicate in a wide variety of situations, from expressing likes and dislikes to ordering in a restaurant, all in Spanish. Vocabulary, grammar, and culture are woven together to help the novice language learner gain confidence. Technology is also used to enhance the learning process. Spanish II - 3022 Prerequisite: Spanish I Course Description: Spanish, in the second year, fulfills the basic foreign language requirements for students required by the Tennessee Diploma Project. Students continue to gain confidence in their Spanish-speaking abilities as they communicate in more real life situations. Vocabulary, grammar, and culture Knowledge will be extended to support more advanced conversation. Students will participate in many different learning activities and benefit from the continued use of technology. Spanish III - 3023 Prerequisites: Spanish I and II Course Description: This course focuses primarily on conversational Spanish and is for learners who want a more rigorous immersion in the language, along with exposure to more vocabulary and attention to even finer details of grammar. Students will develop appreciation of culture through the study of literature, the arts, and current events in the Hispanic world. Students should expect to express themselves in the target language. Use of technology will enhance the learning process. In addition, students will do independent research projects on topics of their choice. French I - 3041 Course Description: Students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading) with an emphasis on the ability to communicate orally. Emphasis will be placed on simple reading and writing. French II - 3042 Course Description: Students continue to develop proficiency in all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) with an emphasis on the ability to communicate orally and in writing. They learn to function in real-life situations using more complex sentences and language structures.

AP Spanish Language and Culture- 3025 Prerequisites: Spanish I and II Course Description: The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).

Fine Arts

One (1) credit in a Fine Art is required for graduation Art History - 3515 Course Description: Art History introduces the student to various media, techniques, and processes. Students will both learn and use structures and functions of art, understand the relationship of visual arts to history and culture, and reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of various works of art. Visual Art I - 3501 Course Description: This course introduces the student to a survey program covering a wide variety of experiences in several art areas. The program includes basic art instruction in both two dimensional and three dimensional areas. Some of the areas to be covered are: drawing, painting, graphics, design, crafts, ceramics, and sculpture. Art II -3502 Prerequisite: Art I or teacher approval Course Description: The Art II course expands on the art experiences introduced in the Art I class. This course offers continued study and studio experience in varied media with more importance being placed on the esthetic appreciation and critical aspects of the student’s work. Course Description: The Art III course further expands the student’s knowledge and understanding of various art media and styles. The media and subject matter is selected by the teacher and is determined by the development and experience of each group of students. Students create individual projects and present them to the class at selected intervals. Emphasis is placed on the critical and appreciative aspects of the art experience. Music Theory and Harmony – 3514 Course Description: In this course, students will better understand music in relation to history and culture, and the relationship between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside of the arts. Students will listen to, analyze, and describe various genres of music, read and notate music, as well as sing and play an instrument alone or with others in a group. Instrumental Music-Marching Band – 3530 Course Description: This is a music class for students who have previously received instrumental music training. Students who elect to register for band will receive training and instruction in the following areas: marching band, concert band stage band (jazz ensembles; pit orchestra), ensemble, and solo playing. The more capable students may qualify to participate in the All-Middle Tennessee Band, All-State Band and Orchestra, and various instrumental music clinics. The two functions of the band are: 1. to provide interested students a program of music education. 2. to provide music for school, civic, and service-related activities. Vocal Music- 3531 Course Description: The fundamentals of vocal music will be taught in this class. The student will learn to read and understand musical notation by singing. Proper singing techniques will be emphasized. Those students who excel will participate in group performances during the concert seasons and will be encouraged to audition for the Women’s Choir or for the Show Choir. Women’s Choir – 3531GC (Audition Only-open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) Course Description: The students in this organization are chosen by audition. The art of choral singing and the study of voice will be emphasized. Literature from several periods of music history will be sung, and emphasis will be placed on public performances as a culmination of class work. AFROTC III 3333 Prerequisite: AFROTC I and II. Course Description: This course builds on the foundations laid in JAFROTC I and II. Course Description: The content of the course includes seven standards: Disease Prevention and Control, Nutrition, Substance Use and Abuse, Mental/Emotional/Social Health, Sexuality and Family Life, Safety and First Aid and Personal Fitness. Each content area is addressed in a classroom and/or physical activity setting. Personal fitness and nutrition should be emphasized and integrated throughout the course. Students are provided opportunities to explore how content areas are interrelated. Students acquire knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being throughout their lifetime. (1 credit-required for graduation) Personal Finance-3496 (may also be taught as CTE course CS5901)

Course Description: Personal Finance is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real world topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Students will design personal and household budgets; simulate use of checking and saving accounts; demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and credit management; and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions (1/2 credit required for graduation). Physical Education 3301 (1/2 credit required for graduation). This ½ credit requirement may be satisfied by several different options, including two credits in AFROTC, interscholastic athletics, etc.

Career and Technical Education

The purpose of Career and Technical Education is to prepare students for careers and post-secondary opportunities that lead to high paying, high demand jobs. CTE paths may lead a student to industry certifications, technical schools, community colleges, or universities. Students who do not choose an academic focus must complete a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program of study. A program of study is defined as three sequential classes in a specified CTE career cluster. Robertson County offers fourteen of the sixteen career clusters recognized in Tennessee. Programs not offered at smaller schools can be taken at the Springfield Career Technical Center (SHS CTC) during third block. Students enrolled in some programs that articulate to a technical school can dual enroll at Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT). Students in programs that more closely align with Volunteer State or Universities may participate in testing for dual credit.

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources

Agriscience – 5957: offered at all schools; fulfills 1 lab science credit Course Description: Agriscience is an introductory laboratory science course that prepares students for biology, subsequent science and agriculture courses, and postsecondary study. This course helps students understand the important role that agricultural science and technology serves in the 21st century. In addition, it serves as the first course for all programs of study in the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Cluster. Commercial Construction program of study intended to prepare students for careers in construction by

phases of building construction including roofing systems, exterior finishing, stair framing systems,

Foundations of Interior Design – 6014 @ SHS Course Description: Foundations of Interior Design is the first course in the Interior Design program of

study intended to prepare students for careers in residential and commercial interior design. Standards in

this course include career exploration of various options within the interior design industry as well as an

overview of the history of architecture and design. Projects will involve individual and team assignments.

Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to analyze and demonstrate the elements

and the principles of design, and apply these concepts using sketching techniques in the creation of

perspective floor plans.

Residential Interior Design – 6006 @ SHS

Course Description: Residential Interior Design is the second course in the Interior Design program of

study intended to prepare students for careers in residential and commercial interior design. Students will

engage in the development of board presentation techniques for residential spaces using textiles samples

and three-dimensional sketches. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to use

Course Description: Commercial Interior Design is the third course in the Interior Design program of

study intended to prepare students for careers in residential and commercial interior design. Important

components in this course include developing an understanding of specifications for commercial design,

building technology, building codes, product applications, and product testing research and development.

Students will work individually and in teams to make presentations to prospective commercial clients and

defend their designs and presentation boards. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be

able to create three-dimensional pictorial representations of objects by way of size, shape, shading, and

color using industry-standard software programs.

Advanced Interior Design – 6121 @ SHS

Course Description: Advanced Interior Design is an applied-knowledge course intended to

prepare students for careers in the interior design industry. This course places special emphasis

on an internship opportunity and a hands-on capstone project. Upon completion of this course,

proficient students will create a design for a specific space and purpose, either residential or

commercial, applying skills and knowledge from previous courses and industry-specific technologies.

Nursing Education—6000 – @SHS CTC Course Description: Nursing Education consists of 18 units of study dealing with direct bedside nursing care. Clinical experience will consist of supervised practice in the nursing home, as well as demonstrations in the classroom. Students can be registered by Tennessee Department of Health—after the completion of the course, 100 hours clinical and theory, passing a state test (both written and skills)—and will be job ready. Students may complete a clinical internship following this course. Jobs include registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, forensic nurse, and other occupations.

Clinical Internship – 5993 - @ SHS CTC Course Description: Clinical Internship is a capstone course and work-based learning experience

designed to provide students with real-world application of skills and knowledge obtained in a pre-

requisite Health Science course. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to

pursue certification in the pre-requisite course of Cardiovascular Services or Pharmacological Science

Once they have graduated and reached 18 years of age. Prior to beginning work at a clinical site,

students must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and deemed

competent in basic first aid, body mechanics, Standard Precaution guidelines, and confidentiality.

Business Management & Administration concentrators may also take this course as part of a career

Course Description: Cardiovascular Services is an applied course in the Diagnostic Services program of

This course is an essential experience for students who are interested in technology, innovation, design, and engineering. Advanced Design Applications—5920 – @ GHS, SHS CTC Course Description: This course consists of four units including Manufacturing, Energy and Power, Construction and Transportation Technologies. 1. The Manufacturing unit examines the advances that maintain manufacturing efficiency, how human consumption affects manufacturing and how process and changing raw materials can produce more desirable products. 2. The Construction unit examines a number of the factors influencing the design and construction of permanent and semi-permanent structures, the practices related to construction maintenance, alteration, and renovation and the functions of the primary systems installed in those structures. 3. The Energy and Power unit explores the relationship between energy and power technologies and all other technologies, and how they impact cultures, societies, and the environment. 4. The Transportation unit examines the complex networks of interconnect subsystems that each transportation system comprises and the roles of these components in the overall functional process of the system. Engineering Design—5921 – @ SHS CTC Course Description: In Engineering Design, engineering scope, content and professional practices are presented through practical application. Students in engineering teams apply technology, science, and mathematics concepts and skills to solve engineering design problems and project-based learning. Students research, develop, test, and analyze engineering designs using criteria such as design effectiveness, public safety, human factors, and ethics.

Maintenance and Light Repair I - 5879 @ SHS CTC Course Description: The Maintenance and Light Repair I (MLR I) course prepares students for entry into Maintenance and Light Repair II. Students explore career opportunities and requirements of a professional service technician. Content emphasizes beginning transportation service skills and workplace success skills. Students study safety, tools, equipment, shop operations, basic engine fundamentals, and basic technician skills. Maintenance and Light Repair II - 5880 @ SHS CTC Course Description: The Maintenance and Light Repair II (MLR II) course prepares students for entry into Maintenance and Light Repair III. Students study automotive general electrical systems, starting and charging systems, batteries, lighting, and electrical accessories.

Maintenance and Light Repair III - 5881 @ SHS CTC Course Description: The Maintenance and Light Repair III (MLR III) course prepares students for entry into Maintenance and Light Repair IV. Students study and service suspension and steering systems and brake systems. Maintenance and Light Repair IV - 5882 @ SHS CTC Course Description: The Maintenance and Light Repair IV (MLR IV) course prepares students for entry into the automotive workforce or into post-secondary training. Students study and service automotive HVAC systems, engine performance systems, automatic and manual transmission/transaxle systems, and practice workplace soft skills. Upon completing all of the Maintenance and Light Repair courses, students may test for the ASE Certified MLR Technician.
