Our information sources include:
• Market observations from Robert Half recruiting professionals who specialise in the Finance & Accounting, Financial Services and IT fields and make hundreds of temporary and permanent placements each year
• Insights from our directors and senior managers
• Independent research we conduct regularly among senior business and finance leaders, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs)
• Our comprehensive analysis of current and future hiring trends
The Salary Guide includes projected average salary ranges for Finance & Accounting, Banking & Financial Services and IT positions in Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Shanghai. The salary ranges represent average remuneration only because factors such as seniority, skills and industry can impact pay levels. Bonuses, incentives and other forms of remuneration, such as benefits and pension schemes, are not taken into account.
We recognise that salary ranges may vary by industry and are influenced by other factors such as hard-to-find skill sets. Please speak with one of our Robert Half consultants in your part of Asia to discuss specific factors affecting your organisation.
5Robert Half • 2015 Salary Guide
The vibrant Asian economies, including China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore continue to present opportunities, and reflecting this, the business leaders we spoke with revealed high levels of optimism – both for the growth of their local economy, and for business growth in 2015.
A focus on quality
As sentiment remains positive, companies across Asia are placing renewed emphasis on securing the top candidates in their field. Sought-after qualities for professionals continue to be exposure to cross-border transactions and multiple currencies. Fluency in English continues to be highly desirable – reflecting ongoing globalisation. Nonetheless in today’s competitive market, firms need to make themselves attractive to candidates. Performance reviews must be transparent, and ideally, career paths should include global or regional mobility.
Work-life balance moving up the business agenda
As quality professionals look for and seize new opportunities, businesses need to meet new talent attraction and retention challenges – looking beyond salaries to create a positive work culture. Supporting a work-life friendly environment is becoming an important focus of attention among companies to enable employees to balance their work and personal commitments. It can be a leap of confidence for employers to offer this sort of flexibility but the rewards are there.
Achieving the right remuneration mix
Of course employee pay packages still pack considerable clout when it comes to recruiting and retaining the best people. Companies that do not offer competitive salaries may put themselves out of contention when it comes to attracting skilled professionals. This highlights the need to stay abreast with current salary levels – more so because we are seeing a growing pattern of professional staff prepared to negotiate their salary. Here too, it pays for hiring managers to adopt creative strategies. When a firm cannot afford higher salaries, it is critical to offer ‘something extra’ and this can take the form of better insurance coverage, more vacation days or performance-based bonuses. Also, consider flexible work arrangements or telecommuting.
In today’s competitive market, awareness of current salary and hiring trends, coupled with a healthy dose of flexibility could be the key that ensures a win-win for both companies and candidates.

Hong Kong
The opening of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and establishment of the regulatory body – the Independent Insurance Authority, are both driving changes to the business landscape. While sentiment remains positive, companies in Hong Kong are placing renewed emphasis on securing and retaining the top candidates in their field.
Finance & Accounting
With 81% of CFOs and finance leaders confident their firm will achieve growth in 2015, the market remains robust as companies continue to make both new and replacement hires. Experienced and younger finance and accounting professionals are well-placed to climb the career ladder in Hong Kong as future leaders.

Japan
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ‘Abenomics’ continue to favour the business sector, and the delay in introducing a second consumption tax hike is likely to support consumer sentiment. The recruitment market is very active at present – both on the candidate and employer side. A sense of optimism is expected to carry over from 2014 into the current year, and little or no slowdown is anticipated. With Japanese companies increasingly looking to take their businesses abroad, demand for bilingual talent remains strong.
Finance & Accounting
Finance and accounting professionals in Japan are increasingly called on to have strong communication skills – not just in order to work effectively with other departments, but also to inform and persuade key stakeholders both domestically and internationally.

Four in five CFOs (82%) report difficulty finding quality finance and accounting professionals, and key roles that are most difficult to fill include business and financial analysis, and accounting professionals.
There continues to be strong demand for finance and accounting professionals within the pharmaceutical, healthcare and IT sectors.
Faced with intense competition for quality candidates, 59% of CFOs in Japan expect to increase salaries for their finance and accounting teams this year. 47% of CFOs also plan to increase bonuses.
As quality professionals look for and seize new opportunities, businesses need to meet new retention challenges – looking beyond salaries to create a positive work culture and offer a healthy work-life balance.

Banking & Financial Services
The hiring market for banking and financial services professionals is very strong in Japan at present. In this environment, top talent is likely to receive multiple offers and prompt action will be the key to secure the best people.
Almost two out of five (37%) business leaders in Japan plan to expand their financial services teams in the first half of 2015.
19Robert Half • 2015 Salary Guide
The roles experiencing greatest demand involve valuation, product control, regulatory, audit and actuary, cross-border M&A and transfer pricing. Along with experience, companies are looking for JGAAP in securities, finance modelling, regulatory reporting and business audit skills.

Technology
If the current IT hiring market in Japan could be summed up in a single word, that would be ‘positive’. Without a doubt, the market is the most buoyant we have seen since the collapse of the financial markets in late 2008. Businesses must be flexible in order secure the best available talent in the market – they can recruit opportunistically and be flexible with expectations when it comes to salary, age and industry experience.
One in four (23%) CIOs in Japan plan to expand their IT teams in H1 2015. Recruitment intentions are being bolstered by new projects and domestic business expansions. Nonetheless, attracting and retaining quality IT talent remains a challenge this year.
Demand is strong for candidates with proven experience in data analytics, mobility services, online/digital and technical front office securities.

Singapore
Singapore’s business environment remains competitive though the Fair Consideration Framework legislation may have an impact on businesses and their hiring strategies. Companies are placing emphasis on top quality candidates – hiring the ‘right’ person for the job and developing talent from within the organisation.
Finance & Accounting
While companies are taking a cautiously optimistic approach to expanding their finance and accounting teams in the first half of 2015, there is an increased focus on the quality of hires and emphasis on recruiting strategic decision-makers and key talent.
The majority of CFOs (94%) report difficulty recruiting quality finance and accounting professionals, and key roles that are most difficult to fill include accounting and financial planning and analysis (FP&A) professionals.

Demand is especially healthy for finance and accounting professionals within the consumer goods, oil and gas, business services, laboratory, scientific instruments and medical devices sectors.
Remuneration continues to be important in attracting and retaining quality finance and accounting professionals. 75% of CFOs in Singapore expect to increase salaries for their finance and accounting teams this year. One in two (51%) CFOs also plan to increase bonuses.
Banking & Financial Services
Our Robert Half recruitment team is seeing significant movement among banking and financial services professionals as talent switches between different employers. Banks and financial services companies today face equally great challenges in finding and retaining top talent.
Banks that are looking to generate higher revenues will bolster demand for private banking, corporate banking and asset management professionals, while demand continues to be robust for quality candidates with a proven track record in risk and compliance, internal audit and regulatory reporting.
Along with experience, firms are looking for excellent communication and business partnering skills, and the ability to work with offshore staff members.

While companies continue to face intense competition for top talent with proven specialist skills this year, employers are also adopting a strategy to control costs which impacts their hiring and remuneration plans. In this hiring environment, candidates need to look beyond salaries and evaluate their career options with other important criteria, such as training and development, and consider how their career can benefit long term from taking on a role.
For finance and accounting professionals working and looking to grow their careers in Shanghai, high-quality presentation skills and good English – plus the ability to connect with a global team – are critical to career success.
