Welcome to the RSO’s Diamond Anniversary Season. I invite you to join our growing audience and experience all that a modern symphony orchestra can be. We’ll celebrate the wonderful versatility of the RSO “Three Score”—through symphonic masterworks, fun pops events, and new concerts at new destinations.

You’ll hear the excitement and inspiration of large, symphonic masterworks performed with passion and commitment by more than 80 musicians and 150 singers at our Concert Hall Masterworks. These concerts give you the timeless experience of a symphony concert, featuring grand works from masters like Schubert, Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Brahms and more, performed at the Roanoke Performing Arts Theatre and Shaftman Performance Hall at Jefferson Center.

New this season, our innovative and accessible one-hour Destination Concerts will take you (and our talented RSO musicians) to the heart of Virginia’s Music City, downtown Roanoke. These concerts are performed in downtown venues including Mill Mountain Theatre’s Trinkle Main Stage in the newly renovated Center in the Square building. I know you will love the RSO’s virtuosity “up close and classical” with the music of Mozart, Handel, and Vivaldi, among many others, in these intimate and vibrant settings. And that’s not all: the RSO continues to connect to more audiences through our successful Picnic at the Pops series. Our Pops lineup begins with superstar vocalist and keyboard player Michael McDonald (formerly of the Doobie Brothers) and the RSO. Our new Holiday Pops will feature the brilliant and dazzling Broadway vocalist Rosena Hill with large chorus and orchestra. Our third Pops concert comes to you truly by popular audience demand in a special program—The Music of Pink Floyd. Don’t miss the unique social flavor and fun of RSO Pops this season!

It is a privilege to welcome you to a new season from the RSO - my 20th season as Music Director. 2015/16 will feature a blockbuster lineup from the RSO with great repertoire, amazing performers, and new programs. From symphonic and choral Masterworks (including a first-ever Gala Opening Night on Saturday), to trend-setting Pops events and intimate opportunities to hear the resident artists of the RSO, your RSO is defining how impressive a symphony orchestra can be.

In 1996, following a two-year search which drew hundreds of conductors from around the world, the RSO found conductor, composer, and pianist David Stewart Wiley.

The RSO’s young, new music director made his Roanoke debut in October of 1995 (auditioning for the job on a Monday Night Classics concert). He became the RSO’s fourth music director with the season that began in 1996. The first program included Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with soloist Norman Krieger in his RSO debut.
