Late Notice OWENS James Homer James Homer (Cotton) Owens, 87, of Salem, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014. He was born October 1, 1926, to the late Oscar and Lilly Owen. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby J. Owens; daughter, Dreama Kiser; and brothers, Everett Owen, and Bill and Sammy Hubble. Mr. Owens was a proud US Navy Veteran, having fought in WWII. He retired after 34 years with Valleydale Packers in Salem, and later retired again from the Roanoke County School Board and City of Salem Schools. His passion was fox hunting, listening to the dogs run all night, and he loved talking on the phone with his fellow hunters. Family left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Karine and husband Richard Pierce, and Glenda and husband Buddy Bastress; grandchildren, J. Travis Pierce and wife Kristy, and Kristin Rickman and husband Tony; great grandchildren, Kendal and Brendan Pierce, and Caroline Rickman; brother in law, Leon and wife Virgie Jarrett; sisters in law, Billie Lee Jarrett and Gladys Owen; numerous nieces and nephews; and many kind neighbors and friends who always were there for him. The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to Salem Health and Rehab for their caring and compassion during this difficult time. Ray was born April 6, 1927 in Roanoke and grew up in both Roanoke and Salem, where he spent many enjoyable days hanging out with “The Lakeside Gang”. He was a natural athlete, played football and ran track for Andrew Lewis High School. While in high school, Ray joined the Navy and served aboard The USS Diamondhead during World War II. Upon returning from the service he graduated from Andrew Lewis and attended Bluefield College. Ray retired from professional life in 1992 as a senior engineering technician. He was a lifelong member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Salem, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher and sang in the choir. Ray was preceded in death by a dear son, Keith Steven Wilbourne; his parents,Vernon and Marie Wilbourne; sister, Martha Lester; brothers, James (Pinkie) Wilbourne and Thomas (Tommy) Wilbourne. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Finese H. Wilbourne; son, Kent H. Wilbourne and wife Stacey; daughter-in-law, Amanda Wilbourne and husband, David Holladay; two much loved granddaughters, Ruth Ann and Rachel Kay Wilbourne and two step grandchildren, Hannah and Will Holladay. Ray ret ired fromprofessional life in 1992 as asenior engineering technician.He was a lifelong member ofTabernacle Baptist Church inSalem, where he served as aDeacon and Sunday SchoolTeacher and sang in the choir.

He is survived by his wife of61 years, Finese H. Wilbourne;son, Kent H.
