Apply online at www.moreheadstate.edu/apply or in person at the Admissions Center. You should apply in the fall of your senior year of high school. There are deadlines for most types of financial aid and scholarships. Some MSU scholarship applications have deadlines as early as Dec. 15 of each year. It’s always best to apply early. You will be required to complete the FAFSA each year. All students are required to either live on campus or have a housing waiver on file. Once you have completed your Undergraduate Admission and Scholarship Application and paid your application fee, submit your high school transcripts, ACT (or SAT) scores, and transcripts from any colleges/universities you have previously attended.For more information, contact: Enrollment Services - Admissions

Once admitted, you will receive an application for student housing. Student housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-serve basis, so it’s important to apply early. If you have a disability and wish to use accommodations, you are advised to discuss your needs and MSU’s documentation requirements with the Disability Services Coordinator before the start of your freshman year.For more information, contact: Disability Services

Received a formal letter within two weeks, stating whether you have been accepted, denied, or received conditional admittance. If your application was incomplete, for example, missing documents, you will be notified.

First Step to Success - Apply to MSU

Your attendance at Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) is the next essential step to becoming a successful MSU student. The day’s activities will provide you with an overview of the educational opportunities and services the University has to offer. While at SOAR, you will register for fall classes and meet other students, faculty and staff who are excited to welcome you to the MSU family.

SOAR registration opens on Feb. 15. These sessions are for admitted students only. You must be accepted to MSU before you can register. If you have questions regarding your admission status, contact the Office of Enrollment Services. There is no fee for SOAR. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

Determine if you need to complete placement testing

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) has mandated placement testing for Kentucky college first-time freshmen with any of the following: ACT English score of 17 or less, an ACT Math score of 18 or less, and an ACT reading score of 19 or less. If possible, placement testing should be completed before you attend a SOAR session. For more information, contact: Testing Center

Find out if you are a candidate for the Success Academy

The Success Academy offers new students who do not meet the Kentucky CPE College Readiness Standards in two or more areas the opportunity to complete some or all developmental courses prior to full-time fall enrollment. Since the five-week program begins in June, students who qualify may apply their financial aid for the current academic year to Academy tuition. The summer program provides intensive instruction and tutoring in two developmental courses and one general education course. The Academy introduces students to campus life and helps establish the study habits and self-discipline needed to be a successful college student. For more information, contact: First Year Programs

Have your EagleCard photo taken.

The EagleCard ID is your official MSU photo identification and financial key to MSU’s cashless society. You are required to carry your EagleCard at all times.For more information, contact: EagleCard Office

Review banking information from U.S. Bank.

U.S. Bank is MSU’s student banking partner and can be linked to your EagleCard. Save time at SOAR by completing your U.S. Bank application in advance. For more information, contact: EagleCard Office

Complete your Health History Form

If you have not already returned your Health History Form, bring your completed form to your SOAR program and return it to the Counseling and Health Services display table. Students under the age of 18 must have the completed form signed by a parent/guardian. For more information, contact: Counseling & Health Services

If you will have a vehicle on campus in the fall, register your vehicle.

A valid MSU parking permit must be displayed on vehicles parked on property owned or controlled by MSU. Enforcement of parking permit requirements begins on the first day of classes of each term. To purchase a parking permit at SOAR, you will need to know your license plate number, make, model, and year of your vehicle. Parking permits are $120 per year for zones AH, AZ, C, E and S. Parking permits are $60 per year for the Overflow Lot – Zone O. Cash, check, or major credit cards are accepted for payment. For more information, contact: Police Department

Make overnight accommodations, if needed

SOAR programs are one-day programs and do not require an overnight stay. If, however, you have to travel a long distance, you may choose to stay overnight. Visit the FAQs section at www.moreheadstate.edu/soar for a list of area hotels.

New Student Days is a three-day orientation program for new students held the weekend before classes begin in August. Activities include educational and entertaining programming. The goal of New Student Days is to help you become more familiar and comfortable with MSU.

The “Big 10” contains 10 recommendations that are fundamental to your college experience. Follow these guidelines to ensure success from your first semester to graduation.

1. Attend every class every day. Be prepared for class with the textbook and supplies, and arrive on time.

2. Get a syllabus for each class. Read and understand each syllabus, especially the learning outcomes and grading policy. If you have questions, ask your professor. Get to know the faculty. Meet with them one-on-one for at least 10 minutes during the first two weeks of classes.

3. Meet with your academic advisor in the first two weeks of classes. Continue to meet with your advisor monthly during the first semester, then as needed or required. If you do not know your advisor or if they are unavailable, contact the Office of Academic Advising and Retention. 5. If you find yourself falling behind in classes or not understanding the material, discuss the issue with your professor. If the issue persists, work with your academic advisor, and seek tutoring within your academic department or at the MSU Tutoring and Learning Center.For more information, contact: Tutoring & Learning Center

6. Physical activity and healthy eating habits are key to student success. Be sure to take advantage of the Recreation and Wellness Center and all the wellness opportunities available to you.For more information, contact: Office of Recreation & Wellness

7. Become familiar with MyMoreheadState. Learn how to navigate your EagleMail account and check it often for important notices such as financial aid updates, billing statements and payment information, as well as course-related information from your instructors.

8. Meet with your academic advisor at least two weeks before advance registration to develop a class schedule for the next semester. When you register for classes, choose days and times that will enhance your chances of completing your educational goals. 9. Understand the eligibility requirements for any financial aid or scholarships you have received. Most scholarships will require a minimum GPA and possibly other requirements for renewal. Understand your program of study and know the requirements for completion. Talk to your academic advisor!

Know your schedule for the next semester.

Be familiar and comfortable with the MSU campus.

Have made new friends and joined a club or organization.

Your Second Semester at MSU

At the end of your first (Freshman) year at MSU, you should:

Have chosen your major and worked with Career Services and the Exploratory Program to ensure it is the right major for you.

Have met with your academic advisor and have a schedule of classes for the next semester.

Have met with your financial aid counselor to ensure your financial aid is in place for the next semester/year.

Have met with Career Services and inquired about internships or co-ops in your chosen field and when you should apply for them.
