• The highest number of car user deaths last year was in Cork (14), followed by Donegal, Kerry and Kildare where nine car users lost their lives.

• The highest number of pedestrian fatalities occurred in Dublin (7), Galway (4) and Mayo (3).

• Clare and Louth recorded the biggest decrease in road deaths.

• Kildare and Monaghan are the only counties where fatalities increased between 2007 and 2013

• The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is a state agency formed by the Irish Government to promote road safety. Amongst the functions of the RSA are the promotion of road safety, research on accidents and road safety, driver testing and licensing.

• According with the RSA the rules of the road are divided into:

-Drivers-Pedestrians-Motorcyclists-Horse-riders-Cyclists

The purpose of the Rules of the Road is to save lives and prevent injury on our roads.

Example: The first category of the Rules of the Road is the minimum age for a firstlearner permit.

Sometimes collisions with animals can have manynegative consequences:• Loss of valuable livestock

or pets• Vehicle damage• Injury to, or death of,

vehicle occupants• Roadkill is a distasteful

sight, particularly costly to locations economically reliant on tourism

• There are three potential ways to change driver behavior. Primary

methods is changing driver attitude by increasing public awareness and helping people understand that preventing road

kill will benefit their community. • The second potential way is to make

people aware of specific hazardous areas by use of signage, rumble strips or

lighting. • The third potential way is to slow

traffic using speed bumps.
