RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I have run Manson Anchors and Manson Marine for 20 years in the Marine Industry. I grew up in a boating family and it’s ‘in the blood’. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: I want to continue the tradition and history of the RNZYS whilst being relevant to new Members. This includes the continuation of initiatives both on and off the water to ensure we are a vibrant and ‘buzzing’ club. My goal is that we ensure sailing is the fundamental pillar on which all else sits. We must ensure that sailing is at the forefront of why we exist. The Club needs to improve other aspects of on-water activity as well as its world-class racing offering. We need to be leaders in ensuring the Harbour and Gulf are maintained for generations to come. We are the custodians responsible to all those who have gone before and all those following on.

I have held various positions within the New Zealand Marine industry, including being the President of NZ Marine for 7 years as well as a Life Member, board member of ICOMIA for 4 years and Chairman of Boating Industry Training for 4 years. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: I have had several goals over my period on the General Committee; they have not been limited to the following, but in terms of a brief view:

    Get the Club to be more financially viable;

    Create a friendlier family-oriented, harmonious environment for the younger and family Members;

    Establish greater Member participation and use of the Club;

    Establish a robust maintenance plan for the longevity of all the RNZYS assets to ensure the future of the Club’s position and growth;

    Try to ensure the Member usage of the Club is not lost to the commercial need to exist;

    Ensure greater sailing and on the water experiences are available to all Members new and old.

I have won National and Regional events as recently as last year. I currently own FP40 catamaran Good 2 Go and skipper Force 11 in the Club Marine Insurance Winter Series. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I am the Owner/ Director of Storepro Solutions Ltd – racking, shelving and storage and Go Green NZ Ltd – industrial products. I am also involved in commercial property investment. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: On the General Committee I want to:

    Continue to evolve the RNZYS to ensure it remains as the premier yacht club;

    Foster a continued team collaborative approach from the Committees;

    Involve and include more rather than exclude. Whilst encouraging more members, I want to focus around actual retention and usage and loyalty around that Club usage;

    Respect the tradition of the Club but ensure we are catering to a younger audience and being current and “today”;

    See greater global planning around the facility and tools we use, not decision based on a quick fix, thereby ensuring the longevity of the club; and

    Most importantly have fun and make the Club inviting for all of us.

I have largely sailed around the Gulf although I have also completed some offshore miles. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I have worked for 36 years in the corporate environment, including 14 years’ executive experience, I have and continue to serve on the boards of a number of businesses and Trusts. I am a chartered member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: Joining the RNZYS General Committee gives me the opportunity to contribute towards making RNZYS the best it can be. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I am the Owner/Director of Structure Design, a consultancy with 18 employees. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: I have enjoyed making a positive contribution to the turnaround that the Squadron has experienced, and am keen to continue to see that the Squadron prospers. The resolution of Kawau Island Yacht Club and transformation to Kawau Boating Club has been satisfying and now leaves us in a position to plan the future of the entire land holding. There are several exciting initiatives that I am hoping to progress over the next 12 months.

I successfully campaigned the Elliot 1050 High Voltage from 2005-2011, with a number of crew sourced from the Youth Training Programme. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I am an Accountant with a strong commercial financial background at a governance level with a number of significant non-profit organisations. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: On the General Committee I seek to:

    Follow a lifelong interest in boating/ sailing;

    Make a positive contribution to the overall direction and development of the Club through active participation on the General Committee and sub-Committees, including the Youth Training Committee.

I have worked as professional crew, raced and cruised in the Mediterranean, United Kingdom, Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: My background is in Commercial Law, Investment Banking, Business Development and Wealth Management. I have also owned a construction business. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: The Squadron is a better place in terms of engagement and communications with regards to Members, finances, improvements to infrastructure, management and staff. We still have room for improvement. I am keen to continue working on delivering value to our different groups of Members over the short and long term to preserve and grow the Club’s position locally and internationally.     SUMMARY OF SAILING/ BOATING EXPERIENCE: I have had a lifetime of sailing and boating experience, including over 40,000 miles offshore and representing the Squadron at the Kenwood Cup in Hawaii.I have sailed centreboard classes through to years cruising and racing up and down the coast and am now enjoying launching. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I worked as a boat builder for many years and am now the General Manager of Auckland Coastguard. I have undertaken committee work for decades. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: I believe I have contributed well to the General Committee over the past term. I have Chaired the Boat Management Committee, provided a 10-year Capex plan for the Squadron vessels, been involved as required with the Sailing Committee and have used that information and experience to participate in General Committee decisions. My maritime experience and years of experience within the Squadron add value to General Committee discussions. I now own the launch Affinity and have a half share in the yacht Boogie Flash which we race regularly. I have recently purchased an interest in the classic yacht Rawhiti (A2). RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I have a commercial background of 36 years. I started my own company importing various products in the mid-1980s and have progressed into specialised printing. I am now involved with property and have consulting roles. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: During the time on the General Committee I have enjoyed making a positive contribution and have developed a far greater appreciation of the Squadron’s requirements. I would like to continue my support and to work on the projects we are committed to. I am proud of the Squadron’s traditions and values it upholds. I believe in our future and am dedicated to encourage the growth of new Members along with the next generation of being involved. I was race crew on Little Jim and Northerner in the 1960s and other boats in recent times. I have competed in offshore sailing/ racing in the North Sea and Baltic while living in Germany. I have completed sea passages to Antarctica and India. I have owned my 12m keeler Chiloe since 1995.

    RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I am the previous owner of a national Information and Communications Technology (ICT) education company. My business strengths are planning, governance and financial controls. I have held numerous directorships during my career.

    GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: My goal is to be an active and committed member of the General, Membership and House, and Finance Committees. I also wish to be a team member on any major projects that the General Committee enter into. In addition, I wish to:

    Contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the RNZYS;

    Contribute to the future direction and development of the RNZYS Youth Training Programme;

    Use the experience and relationships I have gained as a community leader with Auckland City, NZTA, Pounamu Development Auckland etc, to ensure the best interests of RNZYS, as they relate to Westhaven and the city are fully represented and listened to.

    SUMMARY OF SAILING/ BOATING EXPERIENCE: I grew up sailing dinghies competitively, including the following classes, Optimist, P Class, Starlings and the Europe Dinghy. As an adult I have continued racing Pied Pipers, Farr 1020s, Elliott 5.9s and Young 88s. I also love cruising with my family in our Genesis 320, Extreme. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: I am a lawyer with 19 years of experience in the field. I work at Fletcher Building and specialise in Corporate Governance, Regulation, Commercial Contracts and Health and Safety. In the past I have also advised America’s Cup teams, including the Challenger of Record for the 2007 event. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: I am very proud to be a member of the RNZYS, which has an impressive yacht racing programme and diverse membership and range of boating activities. The Youth Training Programme is world-leading. The first objective of the General Committee should always be to maintain the pre-eminence, and not dilute, the importance of sailing being at the centre of RNZYS activities. I have a 7-year-old daughter who loves sailing and boating and already talks about the RNZYS as “our yacht club”. I am keen to encourage more ways for children and families to participate in club activities. I think I can contribute to the governance of the Club with my experience in the corporate world and by adding some diversity of thinking to the General Committee. I am familiar with the new Health and Safety legislation and the importance that strong governance plays in complying with the law, without over-reacting to it. I would like to contribute to the governance of the Club and believe I have the valuable skills, experience and perspective to add.

    SUMMARY OF SAILING/ BOATING EXPERIENCE: I have extensive sailing/ boating experience of both personal craft and big boat sailing of over 60 years.

    RELEVANT EXPERIENCE INCLUDING BUSINESS BACKGROUND: My professional career has included over 35 years in the international transportation, largely shipping business, based largely in Asia. Currently I am the Chairman and Director of an International Security Company, Navsec, as well as holding the position of Chairman of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover Auckland 2014/15 and for the upcoming event in 2017/18. I have previously served on the RNZYS General Committee between 2012 to 2014 and, during that time, was asked to fulfil the role of temporary RNZYS General Managers during changeover between permanent General Managers.

    GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN JOINING THE GENERAL COMMITTEE: My goals in returning to the General Committee are three-fold; I want to:

    Ensure the high standard of governance is maintained together with profitability;

    Ensure the reputation of New Zealand’s #1 yacht club continues and that management of on-water activities such as the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover continues;

    Assist in improving the relationship between the General Committee and Boat/Race Management. I believe my previous experience on the General Committee, professional career, current role as Chairman Volvo Ocean Race Stopover appropriately equips me for this role.
