Compact architectureCAS 36 switchgear is made up of 1 to 4 compact, small sized functional units. This one-piece unit with integral insulation comprises:b A stainless steel metal enclosure, sealed for life, grouping together the active parts, network switch disconnectors, earthing switches and transformer feeder fuse-switch combination,b One to four cable compartments with connection interfaces to the network or to the transformer,b A low voltage compartment,b A fuse chamber compartment for combined fuse switches.Performance levels obtained by the CAS 36 meet “pressurized sealed for life systems” definitions in conformity with IEC recommendations. The disconnector switch and the earthing disconnector provide the operator with all of the operating guarantees he requires:
SealingThe SF6 filled enclosure is at a relative pressure of 0.3 bar. It is sealed for life after filling. The sealing is routinely checked in production, giving a device with an expected lifespan of 30 years. CAS 36 therefore does not require any maintenance of active parts.
Disconnector switch breakingThe electrical arc is extinguished by using the SF6 puffer action technique.
The diagram opposite shows a cross-section of a CAS 36 2I + Q unit where can be seen the various compartments and functions: b Function (I) in the lower part of the CAS,b Function (Q) in the upper part of the CAS.Each function (I) or (Q) is equipped with a moving contact and two fixed contacts, one to close the switch and the other for earthing. The intermediate position, between closed and earth is “open” position.
EnclosureThe strength of the galvanized steel used to support the kiosk components makes it non-deformable and corrosion-resistant.The enclosure is made of 2.5 mm stainless steel.
Tank It is filled with SF6 gas at a relative pressure of 0.3 bar and sealed for life after filling. The sealing is routinely checked in production and gives the device an expected service life of 30 years. CAS 36 therefore requires no maintenance of active parts. The tank groups together all of the active parts: the disconnector switch, the earthing disconnector, and transformer feeder fuse-switch combination.
The performance levels achieved by CAS 36 meet definition for “sealed pressure system”, in conformity with IEC recommendations. The heavy duty, reliable and environment-proof design of the CAS 36 makes it extremely improbable that a fault should occur inside the switchgear. However, in order to ensure maximum safety of people, CAS 36 is manufactured to withstand an internal arc supplied power at a rated short-circuit value of 16 kA for 1 second or 20 kA for 0.5 seconds, without endangering the operator. Accidental overpressure due to internal arcing is limited by the opening of a safety valve in the lower part of the metal enclosure, without any event or projection towards the front of the device. After type testing carried out for 16 kA/1 s or 20 kA/0.5 s, the device satisfied the six criteria defined in appendix AA of IEC 60298 (IEC 62271-200).

Control panelOn the front face of each cubicle there is a mimic diagram showing the main circuit, including position indicators of the main switches.
Control mechanismMechanical and electrical control mechanisms for each switch are grouped on the front face under a control panel with a mimic diagram for the device status (closed, open, earthed).
Network and transformer disconnector switchesSwitching operations are carried out using a fast action mechanism, independent of the operator. For the fuse switch disconnector, the switching mechanism is armed in the same movement before closing the contacts. Once the closing operation has been completed by acting on the lever, it is essential to put the lever back in the opposite position for the springs to be re-armed and for the lever to be extracted.Opening is triggered by a fault (of the fuse striker or by the action of the tripping coil) or by a push button (never the lever). Closing is carried out with the lever.A lever with a anti-reflex device can be supplied as an option.
Earthing disconnector switchesA control rod allows the closing or opening of the earthing contacts. Access to his rod is blocked by a cover which closes when the switch or the transformer disconnector switch is open and remains locked if it is closed.
Locking devicesPadlocks can be used to lock access to:b the switch operating rod,b the earthing disconnector operating rod.

Description 0
SwitchgearThe disconnector switches have the following architecture.CAS 36 is a compact unit including:
b A mobile 3-stable position mechanism (closed, open and earthed) which moves horizontally. Its design precludes the simultaneous closing of the network switch and the earthing network switch.
b The earthing disconnector in conformity with standards, has a short-circuit making capacity.
b The disconnecting function is associated with the breaking function.
b Access to the cable compartments is interlockable with the earthing disconnector and the switch.
b Switch status indication: placed directly on the mimic diagram, these give the position of each disconnector switch.
Optionsb Auxiliary contacts (up to 2 NO + 2 NC) on each switch and earthing disconnector.b Function (I) motorized (48 Vdc) for line function.b Padlock on the switching rod for each switch.b Locking of the function (Q) for earthing.b Cable unit on the front face for two connectors or for installing surge arresters.b Tripping coil (220 Vac or 48 Vdc).b 400 mm raising plinth.
Fuse compartmentOn each CAS 36, the fuses are mounted in insulated resin fuse chambers. The three fuse chambers — for each function (Q) — are placed in the SF6 gas tank, and are perfectly sealed from the SF6 gas. When they are closed they are completely isolated from the outside and are therefore not affected by pollution, even in the case of flooding.A membrane carries out an important role: activating the trip mechanism for the switch when the fuse has blown or when it is overheating.Access to the control panel (on the front face) is interlocked with the earthing switch.

Fuses
Fuse dimensionsThe fuse ratings intended to protect the transformer depend amongst other things on the following factors:b Operating voltage,b Transformer power,b Fuse heat dissipation,b Fuse technology (manufacturer).
It is recommended to use the following type of fuse:b Fusarc CF type: according to dimensional standards DIN 43.625, with a thermal striker.
Example (according to the selection table below) General case: for protection of a 630 kVA transformer at 30 kV, we will choose Fusarc CF-36/31.5 rating 31.5 A fuses.
For more information on Fusarc CF fuses, please consult the Schneider Electric catalogue no. AC0479EN/FR.For installation of other manufacturer’s fuses, please consult us.
Fuse replacementIn the case of a fuse blowing, standard IEC and UTE recommend systematically replacing all three fuses.

Network cable compartmentStandard deviceb Connection bushings 3XM16 (interfaces between the inside and the outside of the tank, which is filled with SF6 gas),b Cable flanges,b Connection of cable earths,b Closing panel which optionally be equipped with a special panel (235 mm thickness) for two cable connectors or one connector with surge arresters.
Optional CAS 36 can be equipped with a 400 mm high raising plinth.
Connection between network cables and the connection bushings must be carried out with “T” connectors that are bolted and insulated at 630 A.Locks to stop access to the network connection compartment when the earthing switch is open.
Connection of cables for function QThe connection of transformer cables and connection bushings situated at the top of the switch must be carried out with “straight” or “L-shaped” connectors insulated to 400 A. Fixings for mobile cables are supplied.
InstallationCAS 36 is held by 2 brackets with holes for fixing:b On a flat base produced with guttering, hoppers or ducts,b On concrete walls,b On blocks,b On metal sections,b etc. CAS 36 network cables can be passed through ducts, etc. This addition simplifies civil engineering works and leads to a reduction in the depth of cable ducts, or even eliminates their use completely if the cable radius of curvature allows this. The raising plinth is fixed directly to the ground.
