MusicAcross Borders is a newdocumentary film created and directed byGameli Tordzro onhow music crosses various borders. It responds today’s migraZon debates and exploresmusicians’viewonhowtheirmusicencountersnegoZatessomeofthesebordersandimpactsonpeopleacrosstheworld.ThefilmanditsscreeningisapartofGameli’sresearchinCreaZveArtsandTranslaZngCulturesandisaboutDanishJazzmusicianandcomposerKatrineSuwalskiwithherbandAnotherWorld, theirmusical journey toGhana in2015andtheircollaboraZonwithGhanaianmusiciansTinaMensahakaElivavaandOdomankomaOkyeremaPra. Thefilmexploresthemusicalityoflanguageandtreatsmusicaslanguage.

MarieSchmidt(DK)HasplayedwithKatrineSuwalskiindifferentconstellaZonsfordecades,whichisheardintheircloselyknitandcreaZveinterplay.TogethertheyhaverecordedtheCD’sRiverPraandLialeBoat.MariehasalsoreleasedanumberofCD’swiththejazztrioSophisZcatedLadies.

MortenLundsby(DK)Denmarkhasproducedanumberofamazingbassplayers.MortenLundsbyisoneofthem.HeplaysinseveralDanishbandsandhehastouredallovertheworld.

AyiSolomon(GH)SolomongrewupinAccraandhaslivedinDenmarksincetheearly1980smadingabigcareerontheinternaZonalJazzandWorldMusicscene.HehasplayedwiththelikesofRandyBrecker,JerryBergonzi,AdamNussbaum.EspeciallyknownforhiscooperaZonwithNewJungleOrhestraandPalleMikkelborg.Heisco-produceronfivealbumswithKatrineSuwalski.

KatrineSuwalski’sAnotherWorldBand

KatrineSuwalskiisamusicianandacomposerofconsiderablescopeandimaginaZon.ShehascreatedherowndisZncZvefusionof JazzandWestAfrican Influences.Herexuberantmusichasapersonaltouchthatisunusual,extrovertandatmospheric,playedbysomeofthebestmusicians from the Danish Music scene. In her musical wriZng she is inspired by greatcomposers such as Manu Dibango and Abdullah Ibrahim. The band features originalcomposiZons by Katrine Suwalski and pianist Marie Schmidt. The band’s repertoire alsoincludesjazzstandardsandfolkmelodies.KatrinaspeaksEnglishandDanishtalkingabouttheimportance of taking down the barriers and that when we listen well enough, we canunderstandmusicandlanguagebyintuiZon.TinaMensahbeaerknownbyherstagenameElivavaTheAfricanGold(orElivavaforshort),isanAfroJazz,AfroPoprecordingarZst,singer,songwriter,Performerandchoreographer.SheisanaZveofNewBaikaintheBuemDistrictofVoltaRegioninGhana.ElivavacollaboratedwithKatrinaonherGhanaTourandspeaksabouthowwelosealotwhenwe neglect our music. And that one does not necessarily need to sing in a language theaudienceunderstandsfortheaudiencetounderstandandcomealong.

OdomankomaOkyeremaKwamenaPra starteddrumming at a very early age in Cape coastGhana. He speaks about how he became Okyerema (Master Drummer) at the age of 15becausehecouldcommunicatewithdifferentcommuniZeswithhisdrumming.Laterat45,he“obtained”theOdomankoma(Devine)ZtletomakehimaDivineMasterDrummer.PrawasoneofKatrina’s rhythmanddrummingteacherswhenshefirstvisitedGhana.Theyhavemaintainedthe linkandwhenKatrinawentbacktoGhanaaner20years inApril2015theycollaboratedaspartoftheAnotherWorldTour

GameliTordzroisaUKArtsandHumaniZesResearchCouncilPhDScholarontheResearchingMulZlinguallyattheBordersofLanguagetheBodyLawandtheState(RMBorders)ResearchProjectatUniversityofGlasgow.He studied Theatre direcZng and Film direcZng at the University of Ghana and the NaZonal Film andTelevision InsZtute. He lives in Glasgow andworks in performing arts, film and research. His work at PanAfricanArtsScotlandincludesnumerousartsprojects,programmesandpartnershipiniZaZvesincludingHesu(Spirit of Music) which he co-founded as the first PAAS’ African-CelZc fusion resident band and later theGlasgowHighlifeBand,andin2014,HaOrchestrathefirstAfricansymphonicorchestrainScotlandGameliisalsothemusician-in-residenceofUniversityofGlasgowGRAMNet.

Gameli’s Documentary filmmaking is driven by his passion formusic and its role and importance in everyday life. As a tradiZonalmusicianandcomposer,hisdocumentaryfilmmakingcareerstatedfromtheNaZonalFilmandTelevisionInsZtute(NAFTI)ofGhanainAccrawithhisstudentfilm‘ThePlightofOurMusicandDance’(BestDocumentaryWinner1995)commentsonthehowGhanawasindangeroflosingitsrichmusicanddance tradiZons.Gameli alsoaCriZcsAwardforTheatreinScotland(CATS)winnerforhisworkinKaiFischer’sLastDream(OnEarth)

The project is acollaboraZon between seven academicinsZtuZons(internaZonalandUK)andthirdsectororganisaZons,andwillrunfor3years(2014-2017).
