SPOTLIGHT on shows A bimonthly newsletter for Rome Little Theatre and Friends of the DeSoto members and contributors JUNE/JULY 2013 I had a chance to sit down with the talented director of RLT’s next show, “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” Virginia McChesney, and we both found out some things about each other that we didn’t already know! Virginia and I met in a costume class in the theatre department at the University of Georgia in 1972, over 40 years ago, and we have been friends ever since. At RLT, she directed me as Rev. John Hale in “The Crucible,” and I have directed her as Queen Aggravain in “Once Upon a Mattress,” both memorable situations for both of us. I had great difficulty with Rev. Hale’s dialogue since many of the lines were similar (I must have tried to keep straight at least twenty different terms to describe the devil, so many lines were similar!), and Virginia doubted she could carry off the singing role of Aggravain in the musical. I got through it, barely, much to my disappointment at not being perfect for my friend, and she was a hilarious smash in one of the few (if not the only) musicals she has performed in with my encouragement and assurance. As the only person at RLT with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in drama and theatre, she is an invaluable resource to our community theatre, and she claims to have been involved in over 120 productions here and has directed well over 50. She is also fond of saying she has done everything at RLT from scrubbing toilets to running the box office to directing shows, and she has! She usually directs at least one show per season with RLT, and performs in at least one each season too, and she is a familiar face in the box office. The first show Virginia directed at RLT was “Never Too Late,” and she remembers that the cast was many of the founders of RLT, many of whom have since passed away but are fondly remembered, such as Dan Biggers and Abby Snyder. She really couldn’t pick a favorite, but Virginia especially enjoys bringing life to classic dramas and comedies, and audiences of recent years will remember the wonderful job she did on “Play It Again, Sam,” “Inherit the Wind,” “To Kill A Mockingbird,” “Chapter Two,” “And Then There Were None,” and “The Man Who Came to Dinner” along with her many other victories. She also remembers her first performance on stage at RLT as Lady Alice in “A Man for All Seasons.” Virginia, with your experience and talent, we think you should stick to directing and performing and leave the toilet scrubbing to someone else from now on! Virginia is also one of the elite few who has been justifiably awarded an RLT Lifetime Membership Award and is one of the only performing artists to be awarded the Rome Area Council of the Arts Artist of the Year Award. But she’s doing all she does for the love of the theatre, and she does not relish the accolades or honors, as you will know if you have ever tried to find her backstage after a production to congratulate her. And these are all factors which will bring us to the reason why Virginia wanted to use her considerable talents to direct the 2003 play, “Shakespeare in Hollywood.” The play is written by Ken Ludwig, the comic genius behind such wonderful plays as “I Hate Hamlet,” “Moon Over Buffalo,” “Lend Me A Tenor,” and so many other plays and adaptations. Virginia said that after reading the play, she wanted to direct this wonderful comedy because “it made me laugh.” The play is about the making of the Hollywood movie of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” so it is a play about the making of a movie version of a play. There are characters in this play that are real and fictional, and there even is a time-travel element when two of the characters from the play become real and come to Hollywood in 1935. Max Reinhardt, James Cagney, and Dick Powell will all make an appearance too. Virginia said our audiences can expect all kinds of surprises, so pay careful attention from the first to the final curtain, or you might miss Tarzan, the fairies, the men in tights, the lion, the rapid-fire “Seinfeld”-like repartee, and a plethora of other surprises. Virginia said her greatest joy in directing this show has been the impressive commitment of so many of the actors, while her only real issue is others in the cast who have not shown the same level of commitment. Hopefully all will learn from the experience of working with this amazing, organized and dedicated director. So what’s next for this talented RLT icon? Well, she’s looking forward to directing the final production next season, the Jones-Hope- Wooten comedy “The Dixie Swim Club,” and I can personally recommend that production as I have directed two plays by this trio of comedy writers and I can guarantee a good time will be had by all. Finally, I asked Virginia what one show would she really like to direct if she had the chance, and she thought for a moment and said “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” (by Tom Stoppard.) Let that be a warning and a challenge, all of you who vote for a season at RLT! Virginia and I both saw an unforgettable production of this show at UGA forty years ago, and we have never forgotten it, and it’s high time for a local production! And thank you, Virginia, for all you mean to RLT (and to me!) Always, Virginia is a Master at work no matter which room of the theatre she occupies! « YOU DON’T NEED A MASTER’S TO DIRECT “SHAKESPEARE…” BUT IT HELPS! By Wendell Barnes

With Mary Ortwein,RLT Office Manager

Our Annual Gala is about to take placeon Saturday, June 29, at the Eco

Center on the river. You'll be receiving moreinfo soon. We're looking forward tocelebrating our 2012 season at RLT andhope you can join us. We thank the GALACommittee for all their hard work in planningthe evening. Training for the new ticketing system washeld at the theatre in April. People can nowchoose to make their reservations online orthrough the box office. Your ticket is now afull page size. Condolences go out to Dave and PegWillis who recently lost their son, Marty. Mayhe rest in God's eternal peace. Our deepestsympathies go out to Mollie and Quentin

Brown on the loss of their Mom, DebbyBrown, who gave so much to RLT. It's graduation time, and we especiallycongratulate all our RLT graduates as theymove on to new phases of their lives. Keepin touch with us! The Executive Director applications arebeing accepted until June 1st, and hopefullywe'll be welcoming him or her into theimportant position soon. It looks like my part-time position as Office Manager will evolveinto a part/part-time position as Box OfficeManager, so I will be able to enjoy moretime with family and friends. «

See you at the theatre!

The RLT community was stunned andsaddened by the sudden death of

Honorary Lifetime Member Debby Brown. For many, many years, Debby was apermanent fixture and friendly familiar facefor people who came to the Theatre. Wayne Jones left a wonderful tribute toDebby on our Message Board, that bestdescribes RLT’s feelings for her: “Although we were proud to share Debby’stalents with the community, she was truly anRLT family member in the strongest senseof the word. As far back as I am allowed togo, I know she co-directed Jack and theGiant with her son Quintin, and produced atleast 12 shows –The Hobbit, TreasureIsland, Jane Eyre, A Night of One Acts, Tom

Sawyer, Camelot, Jack & the Giant,Miracle on 34th Street, Les Miserables,Nuptials, Trick or Treat, and Angel Street. She also spearheaded several specialprojects, such as many Haunted Theatres(she was crazy about Halloween!), severalKid’s Theatre Camps, where many futureRLT stars began their stage careers, andof course, one of her final projects, the twoReel Trees events that gave us thebeautiful ceiling in the arcade. Debbieserved for at least 5 years as VP ofProduction, 2 years as VP of Membership, several years as an At-Large Member ofthe Board, and for many, many shows wasHouse Manager, Graphic Designer,Window Decorator, Set Decorator, andserved on many Casting Committees. Herlasting impression on RLT, however, in thisperson’s humble opinion, is howsuccessful she was into making us a “bigtent”–getting so many of us into the RLTfamily. In my RLT life, no one has beenbetter at doing this, and this is to me a

lasting legacy, and why even now, severalyears after her active involvement, wecontinue to succeed and thrive. It is a tritestatement to say Debby will be missed, notonly in our family but in our arts and historiccommunity here. A giant packed into asmall body is what she was. She will alwaysbe loved and missed by those of us luckyenough to have been part of her magic.” Rome Little Theatre would like to presentthe June 8th performance of Shakespeare inHollywood as ”A Night for Debby.” Allproceeds from this performance will go toDebby’s family. Please go to romelittletheatre.com to ordertickets online, or call the box office at 706-295-7171. «

Members shall have the opportunity tomake reservations on a first-come/first-serve basis for allregular season productions before the Box Office is opened tothe general public.

The Board of Directors proposes that Article I, Section2 of the By-Laws should be amended to strike thephrase “before the Box Office is opened to the generalpublic.” The revised Section 2 will read as follows:

Section 2. All members shall enjoy the rights and privilegespertaining to membership, including all phases relating to theproduction of plays. Members shall have the opportunity tomake reservations on a first-come/first-serve basis for allregular season productions.(Ratified by the Board of Directors at May 21, 2013 meeting. To be proposed at the June 29, 2013 Annual Meeting.)

Comment: This amendment is designed to modernize ourticketing practices using our on-line ticketing system. Theticketing system will allow any purchaser to reserve theirparticular seat(s) at the time of purchase. This will be animprovement over our current manual ticketing practices. However, this feature does not give a preference for amember’s seat selection over a non-member’s seatselection.

After youhave

laughed with allof the Hollywoodluminaries at allsix performancesof “Shakespearein Hollywood,”

and marveled over another masterful Virginia M. McChesneyproduction, you are sure to be searching for other theatreexperiences “Beyond the RLT.” So come with me as weexplore what’s going on at theatres near us. Of course, thecollege theatre departments are closed down for the summer, but we are looking forward to their new fall seasons to beannounced soon. Berry is already out, and we know that theywill kick off their season with the wonderful musical, “A GrandNight for Singing,” a revue of the music of Rodgers andHammerstein, the end of September. More information aboutthis and Shorter’s new season will follow in the AugustBackstage Pass. Most of you also probably already know thatwe are expecting some major renovations to the DeSoto thissummer, so there is also no scheduled summer performancehere either. But there are lots of other things going on near usto satisfy your theatre sweet tooth! Calhoun Little Theatre atthe Ratner Theatre inside the Harris Arts Center is presenting“A Grand Night for Singing” before Berry does it May 30th-June2nd. Performances are at 7:00 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 3:00 p.m.on Sunday. www.harrisartscenter.com/committees is whereyou can reserve your tickets. Later in the summer they will bepresenting the comedy classic, “Arsenic and Old Lace, August23rd-31st., and you will be reminded of this in the nextnewsletter. Pumphouse Players at the Legion Theatre inCartersville is always busy. May 31st-June 8th will see theirproduction of Steve Martin’s hilarious comedy, “Picasso at theLapin Agile.” Following that this summer, their children’s

production of “A Little Princess” will be presented June 28thand 29th. More information is available atwww.pumphouseplayers.com. For the first time since I havebeen writing this column, nothing is scheduled to be going on atthe web site of the Fox in Atlanta after the run of “Sister Act,”the musical that originated at the Alliance Theatre a few yearsago and then just closed a long run on Broadway, playing theFox April 23rd-28th for eight performances. There are anumber of concerts and special shows coming up, but noBroadway shows listed on the Fox website. But a little birdietold me to check with Theatre of the Stars, and I learned that“Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” the long-running West Endmusical about the life of the rock and roll superstar gone toosoon, will grace the Fox July 9th-14th. Later in the month thosemischievous Andrew Lloyd Webber “Cats” will purr their wayinto the Fox July 23rd-28th for the umpteenth glorious return, tobe followed by another homecoming, Atlantan Jennifer Hollidayin her Tony-winning role as Effie in “Dreamgirls” August 2nd-11th. And before summer ends, the hit Roundabout Theatrerevival of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” will play the FoxAugust 20th-25th. The Broadway in Atlanta series will start atthe Fox in November with “Ghost,” the musical version of thepopular Academy Award-winning movie. So there is lots to lookforward to in the coming year at the Fabulous Fox!www.foxtheatre.org The Alliance’s last show of the season, theglorious new musical in its American premiere, “Zorro,” was lotsof fun, loaded with Spanish influenced music by the GipsyKings and lots of flamenco dancing, but it ends on May 5th, andI’m sorry if you missed it. It was magnificent, and hopefullyBroadway bound! Their new season is set to begin inSeptember with a new musical, “Harmony,” with music writtenby the one and only Barry Manilow!
