DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
INLET AIR FILTER:
Inlet air filtration is accomplished by a large 99.9% efficiency at 3 micron and above, dry type air cleaner. This is morethan suitable for the vast majority of applications; however, where high dust and dirt contamination is present, optionalfiltration systems are available.
AIREND
Since the airend is the fundamental component in any rotary screw compressor package, reliability, performance andefficiency are determined, for the most part, by the design, manufacturing tolerances and assembly of the airend itself. All other elements in the compressor system are essentially support and monitoring devices, included to insuredependable service and performance.
The pairs of rotors in SSR 2-stage compressors fit into a combined airend assembly. Compression is shared betweenthe 1st and 2nd stages, flowing in series, which increases overall compression efficiency up to 15% of the total full loadkilowatt consumption. To achieve peak efficiency, our two stage, rotary screw airend uses different Ingersoll-Rand profilerotor sets, because the two compression stages have different objectives. Our first stage rotors utilize a profile for highdisplacement, and discharge at relatively low pressure. The second stage profile achieves high efficiency compressionto final package pressure. The rotors are manufactured from AISI-C-1141 forged steel, rotor housings are made of closegrain high quality cast iron. After machining, all components are dimensionally checked to insure accuracy.
Air enters into the inlet of the 1st stage and is compressed as the male and female high displacement rotors rotate andmesh with each other. To further enhance airend efficiency, coolant is injected into a channel at the 1st stage dischargeport. A precisely machined liquid orifice in the channel creates a curtain of coolant in the interstage passage. Air passesthrough the curtain on its way to the 2nd stage, and through contact cooling, significantly lowers the 2nd stage inlettemperature. This patented process eliminates expensive non-contact cooling devices such as air or water to coolantheat exchangers.
Cooled air from the interstage enters the inlet of the 2nd stage and is compressed by the high efficiency 2nd stage maleand female rotors. The compressed air passes through the 2nd stage discharge port, now at desired system pressure, and exits the 2-stage airend through the discharge flange.
DUPLEX TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS
The bearing configuration used is the tapered roller bearing. The tapered roller bearing essentially consists ofconstructing the roller elements, as well as the raceways, so that lines drawn coincide with the working surfaces of therollers and races will all meet at a common point on the axis of the bearing. This allows the bearing to handle all loads, radial, thrust or both. With this bearing configuration, the discharge end of the male and female rotors are each equippedwith a pair of tapered roller bearings offset at opposing axis for maximum absorption of thrust and radial loads.
High quality cylindrical roller bearings are used to carry the radial loads on the inlet end of the rotors. All bearings, whetherthrust or radial, are premium cost, vacuum degassed, which provide truer, harder running surfaces for both inner and outerbearing races.
Coolant dams are machined at the duplex taper roller bearing locations. The coolant dam provides an area for coolantto collect or pond when the compressor is shut off. Upon startup the taper roller bearing which is resting in coolant pondedby the coolant dam begins to rotate and is immediately lubricated. Airends without coolant dams have bearing systemsthat operate dry for approximately six seconds on start up.

THREE GEAR INTEGRAL DRIVE
In order to utilize the inherent efficiency advantage of the SSR motor and airend, it was necessary to develop a meansof efficiently transmitting power from the driver to the compressor. The integral gear drive system was chosen becauseit is an efficient, reliable and rugged design. The drive gear (center) is mounted directly on the motor shaft, and the drivengears are mounted on the shafts of each male rotor, eliminating maintenance prone and mis-aligned coupling or powerrobbing belts. The loads generated by the driven gears help to offset the load on the drive gear, further enhancingreliability and life. The flanged motor is doweled for permanent alignment to the airend. The use of optimizing(AGMA Class 11) gears allow the rotors to rotate at a specific speed, which allows maximum airend efficiency. The gearhousing is completely sealed against atmospheric contaminants to insure life-time trouble-free power transmission. Aself-centering Teflon impregnated motor shaft seal provides a positive system against leakage to the motor windings. Theentire assembly is vibration isolated from the package.
HIGH EFFICIENCY MOTOR
The main drive motor is exactly matched to the requirements of the SSR 2-Stage. Torque and load requirements of thecompressor were matched to specific design criteria that enabled the SSR motor to develop peak efficiency and powerfactor at full load. This stated efficiency advantage is illustrated if one were to compare SSR motor efficiencies with typicalNEMA motor efficiencies; generally this advantage is 5%.
A. FRAME:
Motor frame and end brackets are of cast iron with integrally cast feet. This provides maximum strength and rigidity forbearing support, uniform stator/rotor gap and flanged permanent alignment of all mating parts.
B. ELECTRICAL DESIGN:
Speed, torque and operating characteristics have been designed to match the load of the compressor. Motor efficiencyand power factor have been optimized to cover the entire capacity range of the SSR 2-Stage and are all rated at a 115°Fambient.
C. BEARINGS:
Vacuum degassed ball bearings for the drive end and roller bearings for the discharge end provide dependable andreliable service. Both bearings are grease lubricated with bearing housings having inlet and relief fittings to simplify thelubrication procedures.
D. INSULATION:
The SSR high efficiency motor has class F insulation as standard. That means it is rated at continuous duty for up to a115°C temperature rise. However, no SSR motor is ever applied for a temperature rise over 95°C, a difference of 20°C.The extra conservatism built into every SSR motor means more reliability, increased life, and a much more forgiving motorunder adverse conditions.
And even with all these unique features, the SSR motor still utilizes NEMA design standards.
E. WIRING:
All windings and leads are copper with triple coats of insulating varnish to add extra margins of protection to the driver.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM
A. COOLANT FILTRATION:
The full capacity coolant filters are 4 micron, spin-on, replaceable elements with pressure bypass.
B. COOLANT/LUBRICANT HEAT EXCHANGERS:
Integrally mounted (remote on 500 HP) aircooled heat exchangers are designed for ambient temperatures to 115°F. Thecore, fan and fan motor are all mounted and prewired within the compressor package. Watercooled coolers are shell andtube type designed to use fresh cooling water at inlet temperature up to 90°F. Other materials of construction and highertemperature ratings are also available.
C. COOLANT/LUBRICANT TEMPERATURE CONTROL (AIRCOOLED AND WATERCOOLED UNITS):
The thermostatic control valve with three ports, (1) for the coolant from the cooler, (2) for the coolant from the pressurizedreceiver/separator, and (3) for the coolant to the airend, is mounted in the piping system. The temperature sensitiveelement controls the quantity of coolant from each source, cooled and uncooled, necessary to provide the proper injectiontemperature and assure fast warm-up.
D. COOLANT INJECTION:
Coolant is injected internally to the 1st stage female rotor and the male and female rotors in the 2nd stage. This insuresthe best possible presealing of the rotors. Coolant is also sprayed into an interstage coolant curtain to cool the interstageair and improve efficiency.
E. COOLANT/AIR SEPARATION:
After compression and discharge from the airend, the air heavily laden with coolant travels to the receiver/separator.Entering through a tangential inlet, the air coolant mixture is directed in a circular motion around the inside of the tank. The vortex or circular motion separates a major portion of the coolant from the air through centrifugal force. The air isthen directed through baffles, which further reduces the coolant content. The vortex action and baffling results in a pre-cleaning of the compressed air, prior to entering the separator element.
The separator element is a molded fiberglass two-stage reinforced separator. On all size SSR compressors, the carry-over, after the separator element is 3-5 ppm. Compressed air then enters the optional aircooled or watercooledaftercooler, where the carryover of 3-5 ppm will be further reduced by the aftercooler and condensate separator to a finalcarryover figure of 2 ppm.
Hence, when calculating coolant makeup for SSR compressors, always use 3-5 ppm by weight.
MICROPROCESSOR CONTROL
The SSR 2-Stage compressor includes a microprocessor based control module which provides for starting, capacitycontrol, operating control, and safety control of the unit.
A. COMPRESSOR/CAPACITY CONTROLS:
The Intellisys microprocessor controls Ingersoll-Rand's innovative stepper motor inlet-control for precise inlet throttlingto match system requirements. This advanced control system will automatically throttle the compressor to matchpressure to load through our exclusive stepper motor.

The newly enhanced PNLD II units are heavy-duty industrial drain valves that remove condensate without wasting
compressed air.
The pneumatically-powered PNLD II requires no electricity, pre-settings, or manual intervention. Designed to complement all
compressed air systems including compressors, filters, water separators, dryers, coolers and receivers, the PNLD II is easy to
install and will not clog.
A unique air valve design uses magnetic force to ensure a positive opening and closing that prevents attraction of metal
particulate. Then an innovative ball valve support-and-positioning system prevents side-loading which causes premature
sealing failure around the valve stem. Finally, a rifle-drilled discharge porting ensures that scale and rust exits through a fully
ported 1/2" (12.7mm) ball valve. The result? PNLD II saves enough compressed air to pay for itself in six months or less.
*The high-pressure PNLD II is fully stainless steel.
*All calculations at 70°F and 70% relative humidity.

General Description
H Filter Series
Ingersoll Rand Air Filtration
The high efficiency filter is designed to remove liquids and solids from compressed air. The filter removes particles down to 0.01 micron-liquids down to 0.01 mg/m3 W at 21°C (0.01 ppm W at 70ºF). The initial dry pressure drop at rated inlet air pressure and rated flow will not exceed 1 psig, where as the initial wet pressure drop will not exceed 3 psig. These filters should be preceded by a G pre-filter. The H series is especially suited for applications such as protecting instrumentation systems and gauging equipment, air bearings, advanced pneumatic and in sophisticated process and electronic plants.
The filter utilizes the coalescing method for removing contaminants. The filter elements are easy to replace with a no-touch process. They are constructed of multi-layered borosilicate microfiber media; glass filled nylon end caps, and perforated stainless steel inner and outer support cores. The housing is constructed of either pressure die-cast aluminum, extruded aluminum or pressure vessel quality steel. The filter has an automatic drainage system for constant removal of contaminants.
The no-touch process makes element replacement a quick & easy task. The durable stainless steel element inner and outer core will withstand sudden pressure surges up to 100 psig. The element top end cap has an over molded seal and patented tapered location that ensures a perfect seal.

NL MODULE FILTER SERIES
Standard Construction
General The NL module is a coalescing type, self-cleaning filter separator designed to remove oil and water aerosols from a compressed air system with a minimum of pressure drop. The NL Module removes oil and water aerosols from the compressed air system down to 0.5 PPM by weight. Coalescing filters are often rated in filtration efficiency by micron size. This measures the effectiveness in removing dirt, rust and scale from the air. The NL Module can be expected to remove 99.9% of all particles 0.1 micron and larger.
Filter Element The element is a unique deep bed design made up of special glass fibers that are wrapped and layered between two carbon steel screens. This design provides a large filtration surface area resulting in high coalescing efficiency, very low pressure drop, and superior filtration even at low flow conditions.
Filter Tank The filter housing is a specially designed tank that facilitates both proper air filtration and drainage while maintaining a minimum of pressure drop.
Operation As air flows through the filter, from inside to out, the oil and water aerosols coalesce forming a liquid film, which drains from the surface of the filter to the bottom of the tank where it is removed through the optional automatic drain valve. This continual coalescence and drainage provides sufficient self-cleaning of the element.
All NL modules are supplied with a filter maintenance indicator and safety relief valve.
The NL Module element is time proven to have a lifespan of over 10 years and a pressure drop of less than 0.5 PSI during normal operation.

NIRVANA CYCLING PRODUCT SPECIFICATION
SCOPE
This specification describes a complete
mechanical refrigerated drying system
for the removal of moisture, oil aerosols
and other contaminants from a
compressed air or gas stream. This is
accomplished by cooling the gas with a
refrigeration unit to a temperature at
which the contaminants condense and
are separated from the gas stream. The
dryer shall be complete in all respects,
including integral component
equipment, inter-connecting piping,
wiring and controls. The dryer shall
only require connection to utilities
furnished by others.
OPERATING CONDITIONS &
PERFORMANCE DATA
The nominal flow rating of the dryer
(SCFM) shall be rated for the following
conditions:
Inlet Air Pressure: 100 psig
Inlet Air Temperature: 100 °F
Ambient Temperature: 100 °F
Outlet Pressure Dew Point: 38 °F
COMPONENTS AND
CONSTRUCTION
Each dryer shall be complete with the
following items:
1. Precooler/Reheater exchanger.
2. Cycling refrigerated chiller sections.
3. Refrigeration system equipped with
independent fully-hermetic compressor
and air-cooled or water-cooled
condensers.
4. Centrifugal air/moisture separator.
5. Condensate drain to automatically
discharges condensate.
6. Microprocessor based control system
to regulate and monitor system
operation.
7. Full cabinet enclosure to protect
internal components.
PRECOOLER/REHEATER
Stainless steel heat exchangers precool
the incoming compressed air using the
exiting chilled, dry air allowing
efficient heat exchange in the air to
refrigerant circuit. The outgoing air,
chilled to 38F, cools this incoming air
and, while doing so, warms the exiting
air to prevent condensation formation in
the compressed air stream.
Air-to-air heat exchangers shall be
designed to provide smooth, non-
fouling exchange surfaces with minimal
associated pressure drop.
The maximum design pressure shall be
220 psig.
AIR SIDE CONNECTIONS
All airside connections are made with
150# ANSI FLG, NPT for 60Hz and
50Hz design. The inlet and outlet pipe
is made from carbon steel pipe.
CYCLING REFRIGERATED
CHILLER
Compressed air from the
precooler/reheater shall be delivered to
the refrigerated chiller which consists
of stainless steel heat exchangers,
where heat from the compressed air is
exchanged with the thermal mass fluid.
Continuous circulation of the glycol
mass permits consistent and reliable
heat exchange allowing constant
temperature and pressure dew point.
The thermostatically controlled
refrigerant mass allows the refrigeration
compressor to cycle on and off
depending on the heat load to the dryer.
The temperature controlled operation
conserves energy, reduce wear and tear
on the refrigerant compressor, and
minimize freeze-up potential.
REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
The refrigeration system shall be
designed to dry a set amount of
compressed air and will consist of one
fully-hermetic compressor, thermal
mass circulation system, air-cooled or
water-cooled condenser and refrigerant
evaporator. Modulating device such as
a hot-gas-bypass shall not be used.
Refrigerant R404A shall be used to
minimize environmental hazard.
COMPRESSOR
A hermetically sealed compressor shall
be utilized throughout the Ingersoll
Rand Nirvana Cycling design range.
All compressors have an oil sump
heater with primary external motor
temperature protection and internal,
secondary motor temperature
protection. A primary, external sensor
with secondary, internal protection
monitors compressor discharge
temperature. The compressor is
installed on isolation mounts to reduce
noise and vibration.
DETAILED SPECIFICATION (50Hz / 60Hz)
PIPING
ASTM B75 or ASTM B743
refrigeration gauge piping shall be
utilized throughout the design. To
ensure proper oil return to the
compressor, all velocities through
refrigeration piping meet or exceed the
required specification.
Stress relievers shall be used
throughout the design to increase the
refrigeration circuit’s structural
integrity by minimizing vibration
transmissions and allowing for thermal
expansion.
THERMAL MASS COOLLING
SYSTEM
The thermal mass cooling system shall
consist of a centralized thermal mass
reservoir, thermal mass fluid and
stainless steel evaporators. Refrigerant
from each Refrigeration System shall
be circulated within the evaporator of
each module, liberating heat from the
thermal mass fluid. The thermal mass
shall thus allow the refrigerant
compressor to cycle on and off
automatically depending on the heat
load to the dryer. Evaporators shall
exchange heat between the refrigerant
and thermal mass fluid. The storage
container and exchanger system shall
be designed to deliver a 38°F PDP.
THERMAL MASS CIRCULATING
SYSTEM
Thermal mass fluid is transferred to the
air heat exchanger via the thermal mass
fluid pump. Pump shall be
maintenance-free, cartridge circulator
pump. Pump shall run continuously to
maintain flow through the air chiller at
all times.
CENTRIFUGAL AIR/MOISTURE
SEPARATOR
A vertical air/moisture separator shall
be located adjacent to the chiller
section. Compressed air and water
condensed in the chiller section shall be
delivered to the separator for the
separation and subsequent removal of
the water from the compressed air.
Separation shall be performed at the
coldest point in the system by means of
centrifugal acceleration, expansion into
an area of low velocity with sump area
and change of air flow direction. These
separation mechanisms shall provide
for separation efficiency in excess of
99%.
TIMED SOLENOID DRAIN
Condensate shall be removed from
separator by a timed solenoid drain
valve which is controlled by the
Microprocessor Controller.
MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLS
AND INSTRUMENTATION
The chiller section and associated
refrigeration system for each module
shall be controlled and monitored by a
fully integrated microprocessor. The
standard microprocessor shall
