at our fabulous district assembly held on 10th & 11th may iPdg rtn. Jorson Fernandes gave the awards for rotary year 2012-13 for iPP rtn. siddharth Zantye’s year, and rC Panaji riviera bagged 21 awards. it was a proud moment for us at riviera. Besides the number of awards received, siddharth got - the rotary foundation district service award, and rotary international significant achievement award to Panaji riviera, and topped off saturday night with the announcement of “Best Club”, “Best President”- rtn. siddharth Zantye and “Best secretary” – rtn. dr. mahesh Pai. Congratulations to iPP rtn. siddharth, rtn. mahesh, and team riviera for a great year!

may for me and the team was a month to look back on the projects completed, compare them to the projects planned initially, and work on the ones not completed. most of this month went to plan big projects lined up in June.

nevertheless, our Club had it’s most awaited event – master Chef cooking competition with live cooking etc… was so much fun! Besides this we had a few other projects, Panaji riviera had the dedication ceremony of the matching grant project 2012-13 of providing green Laser Photo Coagulator to aravali Vikas mandal Hirabai narayan Prabhu Zantye eye Hospital, aravali. We also donated 2 wheel chairs to an old age home through Help age india. many thanks to our Friend of rotary ashley gomes for the donation. special thanks to rtn. dr. shekhar shirwaikar for rendering free treatment to a financially poor patient.

Our Club members have contributed rs. 1,70,000/- (2833 Us$) in total this month. rtn. Paresh sawardekar has contributed rs. 1,05,000/- (1750 Us$) to trF. i would like to thank all my dear members for their contribution to trF. Your contribution will go a long way to help the needy in some part of the globe!

trF trustee d. K. Lee says “We are this close to interrupting transmission of the wild poliovirus worldwide”. riviera is a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club. this is a big achievement in itself. However, i also hope that our club can play a role in this global phenomena of eliminating polio virus. Let us also try to raise money for Polio and create history.

Cheers rotary! Cheers riviera!!!

Yours in rotary,

We’ve all heard the story of the turtle and the rabbit. they used to be friends but one day they had an argument over who is the better of the two. the rabbit was a cunning little fellow

and he suggested that they have a race to see who was the faster of the two. the faster one would naturally be the better one. they both agreed on a route and started off the race.the rabbit blasted off at tremendous speed while the turtle trudged along laggardly doing the best he could. the rabbit soon ran out of breath and seeing that the turtle was way behind decided to take a break and relax for a wee bit before continuing the race. He sat under the shade of a tree and soon fell asleep. the turtle in the meanwhile, made up for lost ground and seeing the rabbit fast asleep plodded on, overtook him and finished the race emerging as the undisputed winner and needless to say the better of the two. When the rabbit woke up he realized that he had lost out to the turtle. the moral of this story that we have all grown up with is: “slow and steady wins the race”. But our version of the story doesn’t end here!the rabbit was certainly disappointed at the turn of

events. He did some introspection and realized that he had lost the race only because he had been over-confident and careless. Had he been a little more sensible and not fallen asleep he would have easily outdone the rabbit. He had to drive the

point home that he was indeed the better of the two and salvage his pride. He challenged the turtle to another race and the turtle once again agreed.this time the rabbit was committed and went all out. He did not stop anywhere and allowed nothing o distract him

Gather Togetherand even before the turtle had made it to the half way mark the rabbit had crossed the finish line. He had beaten the turtle and how!the moral of the story is: “consistency and speed coupled with commitment will beat slow and steady any day, every day”! it sure is good to be slow and steady but it is definitely better to be fast, consistent, reliable and committed. But our story doesn’t end here…the turtle was licking his wounds and could not come to terms with the fact that he had been humiliated in such a fashion – he had been beaten by several miles. He realized that the way the race was presently formatted, there was no way he could beat the rabbit. He did some thinking and challenged the rabbit to another race – this time in a different format and on a different route.the race track this time, covered some distance on the ground, across a river and again on the ground before reaching the finishing line. the race started and the rabbit raced ahead at full speed until he reached the river. Once there, the rabbit was at a complete loss and sat there wondering what to do. the turtle in the meantime trudged along, got into the river, swam across to the other bank, continued walking and completed the race without much ado. the rabbit was left on the shore twiddling his thumbs. He had been beaten again!the moral of the story: “to succeed, first identify your strengths and your core competency and set the playing field to suit your core competency”.But our story still hasn’t ended.the turtle and the rabbit by this time had got tired of this fighting and constant bid to outdo each other and they sat together and discussed the issue. they had a hunch that

May 2014

Page 9: Rivulet may 2014 issue

9

n i L e s H a m O n K e r ’ s B L O g

had they worked together and capitalized on each other’s strengths and performed as a team, they could have run the last race a lot better and could have possibly broken all records. they decided to give it a shot again.this time however, the rabbit carried the turtle on his back from the start line upto the river bank. Once there, they swapped positions, the turtle took the rabbit on his back and swam across the river. On the other side of the river, the turtle rode on the rabbit’s back once again and they got to the finish line together in record time. they had not only broken all previous records but had both emerged as winners in their own right. the sense of satisfaction was tremendous.the moral of the story : “it’s great to know your individual strengths and core competencies but the key is to work together as a team with others and harness others’ strengths and bring in synergy rather than work at cross purposes. that alone is the secret to great achievement”.so collaborate as much as you can and work together as a team to take on whatever it is that you set out to do. Your team will not only add value to you but multiply your value. Your team will complement you and take care of things that you are not particularly good at while you are able to focus on the things that you can do well. it’s a simple case of 1 and 1 being not 2 but equal to 11. as an individual player, you will no doubt show glimpses of brilliance from time to time but your overall performance is likely to be below par because there would always be situations when you will fare poorly and someone else does well. the key clearly lies in collaborative effort and situational leadership. it’s about working together with people, assessing each other’s strengths and letting the person with the relevant core competency in a given situation to take the leadership position.

it’s not merely about who’s the boss – it’s more about who’s the boss in a given situation and letting him/her take over. teamwork is seldom about people coming together

and doing things your way or my way; it’s about unde rs t and i ng the situation and letting the person best suited to handle the job do it! teamwork divides the task but multiplies the chances of success. r e m e m b e r ,

individually you may be but a drop of water – together, you can be an ocean!as andrew Carnegie said, “it marks a big step in your development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you can do alone.” and for the naysayers who doubt the power or force of individuals working together – a snowflake is perhaps one of the most fragile and delicate things you can find; but the sheer power of a bunch of snowflakes sticking together and moving in one direction as an avalanche makes it virtually unstoppable. and so it is with people. in the words of mother teresa, “i can do things you cannot and you can do things i cannot; together, we can do great things.” in the end, no matter how good you are, you cannot whistle a symphony - it takes a whole orchestra to play it!

10 Foods to Eat EvEry dayFor PErFEct skin

1. RED BEll PEPPERS

red bell peppers are a tasty vegetable that can be enjoyed either cooked or raw. One red bell pepper contains more than 100%

of your daily vitamin C needs. it also contains significant amounts of dietary

fiber and vitamin B6. moreover, it is rich in carotenoids that can help prevent wrinkles and increase blood circulation to your skin, helping it look more youthful. due to their carotenoids, red bell peppers are also great to fight acne.

a red bell pepper is a perfect, low calorie snack that contains about 30 calories and has a really satisfying crunchy bite. Keep slices of red bell peppers in the fridge, so you will always have something healthy and tasty to reach for when you are having a snack attack. the fiber that a bell pepper contains will help you to feel full longer with very little calories. Plus, you will have a flawless skin!

2. DARK CHOCOlATE

this is one of my favorite foods to eat every day for perfect skin! dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids and flavanols that promote glowing skin. the antioxidants in dark chocolate will help reduce roughness in your skin and protect it against sun damage. moreover, cocoa relaxes arteries, increasing blood circulation that leads to healthier skin.

Buy cocoa powder or raw cacao for less fat. and if you like dark chocolate, eat your ounce of dark chocolate

every day and make sure you choose at least 80% cacao content in order to avoid milk and added sugars found in a traditional chocolate bar.

3. SAlMON

salmon is an excellent food to fight stress, anxiety, and depression. salmon also provides most of

your daily vitamin d needs. and as you may already know, Vitamin d is

responsible for keeping your heart, bones, colon and brain healthy. it also helps prevent colon cancer, anxiety, depression, heart disease and bone disease.

salmon is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are excellent for fighting inflammation, wrinkles and acne. its high omega-3 content also helps hydrate your skin from the inside out. moreover, eating salmon keeps your scalp hydrated and promotes strong, healthy hair.

4. COCONUT OIl

Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat with about 90 percent of calories as saturated fat. it contains lauric acid, a powerful antibacterial and antiviral agent that keeps away viruses, infections, inflammation and acne. Coconut oil is also rich in essential fatty acids and Vitamin e, which are perfect for keeping your skin moist, soft, and wrinkle-free.

Use coconut oil as a body cream and consume 1 tbsp. of

Are you tired of using different expensive and ineffective beauty products? It’s time to throw away all those ineffective products and start eating foods for perfect skin. You can go from terrible acne to no acne in five months. Its hard, but possible, and less expensive than turning to pricey products. While some foods can aggravate your skin, others can enhance it. raw coconut oil every day. Coconut oil is especially good for your thyroid. Plus, there’s considerable evidence that this oil can help lose weight. so many health benefits, don’t you think?

5. GREEN TEA

Well, though green tea is actually a beverage, tea leaves come from a plant. it is suggested to drink green tea every day because it has a great source of antioxidants and a unique amino acid, L-theanine that helps relax

your body and lower stress.

When the tea is hot, the bionic brew releases catechins, a kind of antioxidant with proven anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. green tea may

also reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure. drink 3 or more cups of tea

every day for better results.

6. SPINACH

spinach is a healthy and nutrient-rich food you should certainly include in your everyday diet. You may hate spinach, but it is a wonderful source of iron, folate, chlorophyll, Vitamin e, magnesium, Vitamin a, fiber, plant protein, and Vitamin C. due to their antioxidant abilities, Vitamins C, e, and a are especially great for your skin.

spinach contains antioxidants that fight against all types of skin problems. add it to your everyday diet and see what happens. By eating spinach, you’re just cleaning your skin from the inside out!

7. SEEDS

Chia seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds are all great for your skin. Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are both rich in selenium, Vitamin e, magnesium and protein. selenium and protein keep all wrinkles away, Vitamin e enhances moisture in your skin and magnesium lowers your stress

levels. the healthy Omega 3 fatty acids in flax, chia and hemp seeds are perfect for fighting wrinkles and acne. Plus, these seeds are rich in protein.

Just sprinkle seeds right on top of your salad or oatmeal and enjoy the great taste

as well as perfect skin. add seeds to a fruit yogurt and it will taste even better. You can also add raw pumpkin seeds to your oh-so delicious smoothies. and what are your favorite seeds? How do you eat them?

8. CElERY

another food to eat daily for perfect skin is celery. many of us underestimate this veggie, but celery contains Vitamin K that keeps the blood circulation healthy and helps to reduce high blood pressure. this can reduce your stress level, and as you know stress can cause bad skin, migraines and even cancer.

Celery also contains natural sodium, potassium and water, and can help to prevent dehydration. Hope you know that dehydrated skin means dryness, flaking, wrinkles, and even breakouts. make sure you consume celery every day or at least every other day. if you are counting calories, don’t worry, celery is very low in calories!

9. PAPAYA

Papaya is a wonderful fruit which has a rich history and numerous nutritional benefits. it is very low in calories (only 39 calories per 100 g!) and also contains no cholesterol. so if you are trying to lose weight, consider eating papaya every day to maximize its health benefits.

a great beauty food, papaya is low in fructose and is excellent for digestion! the antioxidant nutrients found in it, including Vitamins C and e and beta-carotene, are great at reducing inflammation and acne. moreover, Vitamin C may also protect your skin against sun damage.

10. CARROTS

Carrots are good not only for your eyes, but also for your skin. they are especially good for clearing up breakouts.

Carrots are rich in vitamin a and they help prevent the overproduction of cells

in the outer layer of the skin. that’s where excess sebum combines with dead cells and clogs pores.

another great reason to snack on some carrots is because Vitamin a

reduces the development of skin-cancer cells. so make sure you nibble on a half-cup of baby carrots every day for perfect skin. i love carrots and i think they make a great snack.

you don’t have to eat all these foods every day, but even some of them would be great! Be sure to avoid junk foods, too much sugar, trans fats and refined carbs for the best skin possible. which of these foods do you eat every day? Share your thoughts, please, and thanks for reading!

the great difference between voyages rest not with the ships, but with the people you travel with.

my sister and i were super excited about this holiday as our parents had never taken us to europe before. We landed at Heathrow airport and were picked up by dad’s best friend dr. irineu, a doctor practicing in London.

We checked into a hotel and irineu uncle took us to Windsor castle and eton. Windsor castle is the former residence of the Queen and is beautiful.

the next day was hectic. We visited Westminster abbey, Big Ben, witnessed the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace and London’s famed attraction madame tussauds. nats and i spent three hours taking photos with so many celebs – ‘Brangelina’, emma Watson, tom Cruise, Johnny depp and our very own Bollywood stars. it was absolutely ‘Paisa Vasool’.

the next day we set out for Cardiff, Wales on the Britrail. in Cardiff, we got onto the hop-and-hop-off bus which took us to the must see sites including Cardiff castle and millennium stadium. Later we spent a lovely evening with dad’s classmate dr. selwyn and his family and they treated us to Cardiff’s famous lip-smacking “Fish and Chips”.

We came back to London via Bath, a small quaint town and a world heritage site of stonehenge.

in London, we got onto the London eye, a great way to get a bird’s eye-view of London and fantastic photos too. next day we were up early as we had to take

the rail to edinburgh in scotland. Britrail is the best, most convenient and inexpensive way to see the UK. scotland is breathtakingly beautiful and the edinburgh castle is simply superb! the views from the castle to the coast are superlative. We also enjoyed the very much talked about scotch Whiskey experience and saw the largest private collection of scotch whisky in the world(which dad couldn’t seem to take his eyes off!!). the exciting part of the experience was the tasting of the various kinds of Premium scotch Whisky made in different parts of scotland.

On the way back to London, we had an overnight halt at Birmingham where we met dad’s cousins. the next morning we travelled to stratford upon avon, the birthplace of england’s most famous poet, William shakespeare. We also paid a visit to Bournville town which has the largest “CadBUrY” factory in the world. We could practically smell chocolate from a km away as we walked toward the factory. the factory has a very well organized tour which shows you how Cadbury came into making and how the various chocolates are made. We also participated in chocolate making and of course dad was like a kid in a toy shop!

the last day in London was reserved for shopping. the huge malls and high street shopping like Harrods’s and Westfield is great for shopaholics. We truly wished we had few more days for shopping. We zipped across London via the tube. i suggest that everyone buy an oyster pass as you can travel around London conveniently.

When the day of our departure arrived i certainly couldn’t part with that place.

METHOD1. Clean and pat dry 2 chicken breasts. Cut them

into 2 layers horizontally if too thick.

2. take 1 tbsp of olive oil, add some pepper powder and 1 tsp lemon juice. adjust the salt and marinate the chicken for 30 mins.

TAuRuS April 21 - May 21

much of the drama of the last few months has finally ended. you still have the occasional short-term challenges, but

nothing as big and ugly as what you were dealing with before. you are still experiencing positive financial growth and opportunities as well as some great social and commercial energy as well. you are getting along well with most people and able to persuade them to see things from your point of view.

GeMini May 22 - June 21

your financial problems have died down and you are able to make progress and set new goals within this

area of your life. your professional life is still a bit hazy, but overall you are making it work, mostly by not pushing it and trying to force things. you are finding time to spend with friends and loved ones despite some scheduling conflicts and a bit of a tug-of-war for your attention now and then.

CAnCeR June 22 - July 22

most, if not all, of the negativity of the last few months has finally ended. you still have some occasional little fires to put out here and there, but for the most part, you should be able to have fun, make progress towards

professional goals, and begin healing relationships and/or spending time with friends after months of uptight dramas.

Leo July 23 - August 23

you are dealing with some trust issues involving a friend, teammate, group, committee member, or internet entity.

but you are also enjoying a lovely social life and are moving into a time when you are ready for some quiet reflection. this month, you are encouraged to take that much needed vacation and think about what all has happened and how you can bring more peace and balance into the various elements of your life.

ViRGo August 24 - September 22

your social life, teams, clubs, committee meetings, group activities, and/or internet projects are taking center stage. you would still like to spend more time focusing on your

loved ones, hobbies, and playtime activities, but your social obligations are demanding a lot of your time and energy. you are able to enjoy yourself even if you are feeling a bit torn between what the group wants from you and what you wish you were doing instead.

LibRA September 23 - October 23

you are still making a lot of progress at work and you are finding smart and creative ways to increase your share of the profits. however, you are still very much interested in traveling or political, cultural, academic, religious, or media

related activities and the concept of learning while opening yourself to new philosophies. it might be messing with your performance at work. but it is also something you and your social, professional, or romantic partner can do together. maybe the two of you should sneak off for a vacation together.

SCoRPio October 24 - November 22

you still have a bit of that uncertainty as to whether or not a romantic or financial partner can be trusted because neptune is causing things to look bad. but neptune might

just be creating an illusion, so you still need to base your actions on facts and not suspicions. but this issue is finally ending. now you are able to focus more on politics, religion, cultures, legal matters, academia, mass media, travel, and other global knowledge type activities. this is a good time for you to enjoy an exotic vacation, sign up for classes, broaden your horizons, and open your mind to learning new things and new ways of seeing things.

SAGiTTARiuS November 23 - December 21

you are alternating between productive days at work when you are able to make progress towards achieving your financial and professional goals and spending quality

time having fun with a lover, best friend, or business partner. you do not seem to be having any trouble creating balance between the two. you do sometimes have the occasional bit of drama but nothing major that would mess up your good mood.

CAPRiCoRn December 22 - January 20

you and your partner or rival have made a lot of progress towards working through your disagreements. things

are not quite perfect between you but you have agreed to a new start or maybe you just found a new partner and are phasing out things with the old partner. either way, you are making a fresh start when it comes to partnerships in general. remember that partnerships can include best friends and business partners too, it is not just romantic partners, so do not assume that you are dumping your lover for someone new. you could, but you certainly are not expected to. just be open to new beginnings and new ways of treating each other. you are moving towards a more positive relationship.

AquARiuS January 21 - February 18

you can successfully conclude a team project, networking endeavor, committee membership, or internet based project. you are also able to launch some kind of a

professional new beginning, fresh start, or key project and it appears to be going quite well despite lingering dramas from earlier this year. most of the time, you are happy and juggling all of life’s ups and downs without too much trouble. however, political, religious, academic, travel, and/or cultural arguments can really be annoying this month.

PiSCeS February 19 - March 20

this month is like a review of the year so far. you get a mini-version of all of the good and bad that you have

dealt with so far. you get a bit of financial, romantic, social, and playtime related drama. you get a bit of excellent social and community oriented bonding. you get a little more of that great bargain hunting and negotiating business energy again. and you get to be upset about something or someone in your home or private life again. nothing bad lasts too long and everything good is easy to notice and take advantage of.

may month was the month of district awards and international Conference.it was a month of getting recognition for the good work done by clubs and getting to known the power of internationality of rotary.

rotary international doesn’t have a special designation for may month. However some clubs designate may as “rotary international Conference month”. some also call it “Community service month”.

since may 2014 was a month of district awards and our Club was bestowed with 21 awards, which i guess were the most awards won by any club, its worth to dedicate the front page of this may rivulet to the district recognition our Club was honoured with and the team of 12 – 13 lead by iPP rtn. siddharth

Zantye. He certainly exceeded everyone’s expectations and this is the testimony of how good he and his team performed in 2012 – 13. i also take this opportunity to thank iPdg rtn. Jorson Fernandes who has boosted the morale of team riviera with such excellant recognition.

as we enter the last two months of the rotary year, i am happy to report that, as the editor of the rivulet, i have truly enjoyed the experience. i thank all my rotary friends who have taken their time, thoughts and skills to pen down all the beautiful articles for the rivulet.

Your effort has ensured that i have all the quality matter for the last issue of the rivulet 13 -14, however more matter is always welcome.

Light up rotary by engaging it, to Change Lives…Yours in rotary service,
