2017 Family & Friends Auction ChairsJamie Shanks and Alex Smith

Welcome to the 2017 Family & Friends Auction! We are so proudto be chairing this fundraising event in such an important year when we are combining the Rivkin Center and CanCan communities together for the party of the year! The Family & Friends Auction raises vital funds to provide hope for thousands of women and their families in our region and beyond. We are thrilled to blend two successful events together tonight.

We both became involved with the Rivkin Center separately at different times, but for similar reasons: our mom’s were diagnosed with cancer. Alex has served on the board of the Rivkin Center for 14 years and is a past board president. Jamie served on the board at CanCan for 7 years and was a key supporter in merging the two organizations, and has transitioned to be on the board of the Rivkin Center. In a crucial year for this event, it was important for us to bring together both the Rivkin Center and the CanCan communities to make a greater impact on women’s health. We are proud to be a part of this larger Rivkin Center family.

Tonight we celebrate women like Heike Malakoff, our 2017 Courage for Life Award Recipient, and other women like her who bring extraordinary courage and strength to their battles with breast or ovarian cancer, and help to spread awareness and early detection. We’re also celebrating people in our community like Chuck and Karen Lytle, our 2017 Babs Fisher

Valor Award Recipient’s, whose dedicated commitment to the Rivkin Center and the fight against ovarian cancer has fueled research against this terrible disease.

We also here tonight to raise MONEY! Our goal is to raise more than $1.2 million this evening to fund urgently-needed ovarian cancer research, as well as education and early detection for breast and ovarian cancer so that we can get closer to the day when women no longer die from these diseases.

Thank you to our generous sponsors, lead donors, and to the members of the Family & Friends Auction Committee for making this evening possible. Thanks to all of you here tonight who have made this gathering an important tradition (whether at the Family & Friends Auction or the CanCan Fundraiser), and provided generous continued support. And lastly, welcome to all of you who are joining us for the first time - welcome to the Rivkin Center family!

Please open your hearts and your wallets and give generously this evening, honoring the women we have lost and the women currently battling cancer. Your generosity will fund the work to ensure that future generations will lead healthier lives.

Sincerely, Jamie Shanks, Board MemberAlex Smith, Board Member

W E L C O M E

Together with a Passion for Women’s HealthWelcome on behalf of the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Board, and the team of the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer to the 2017 Family & Friends Auction! This year’s auction is a particularly special celebration, as we join together our Rivkin Center and CanCan communities for one very special evening.

The Family & Friends Auction was the way that my family first became involved with the Rivkin Center. Saddened by the loss of my mother, Colleen Kirwin, after an eight-year battle with ovarian cancer, we began looking for ways to put our grief into action in the fight against this disease. Fortunately, we stumbled upon the Rivkin Center website and learned that the Family & Friends Auction was just weeks away in downtown Bellevue – our own backyard! That was back in 2011 and today we’re proud to be part of the Rivkin Center family. This event is our favorite way to support the Rivkin Center and its important work.

Since its inception in 1996, the Rivkin Center has awarded more than $10 million in ovarian cancer research grants to scientific investigators, making it one of the oldest and largest non-profit global funders of ovarian cancer research. The Rivkin Center has become a vital source of awareness and education through the CanCan education program reaching women and family members throughout the Western United States. Finally, the Rivkin Center has become a major supporter of early detection screening for high-risk women in the Pacific Northwest.

This work and progress has been funded almost exclusively by private support from the community, including donors like you. Thank you to everyone in the audience tonight for being here to celebrate the continued success of the Rivkin Center, and for being a part of the important work ahead. Together, we can end the suffering caused by ovarian cancer and make an impact on women’s health.

Sincerely,Bobbie HintonPresident, Board of Directors

2017 Babs Fisher Valor HonoreeChuck and Karen Lytle

We are thrilled to honor Chuck and Karen Lytle with the Babs Fisher Valor Award this year.

Chuck and Karen Lytle are longtime Seattle area philanthropists who have provided significant leadership and financial support to many organizations in our community. Chuck served on the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Board of Directors from 2000 to 2012, and was instrumental in helping build the board and organization to what it is today. He is the founder and president of Lytle Enterprises, a senior housing company established in 1976. Chuck has also served as past chairperson of the Swedish Medical Center Foundation Board of Governors and served as chairperson of multiple committees at Swedish. He has served on the board of Payless Drug Stores, was president of Washington State Special Olympics, vice chairperson of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society for United Way, and vice president of PONCO. The Lytles are regular attendees of the Family & Friends Auction when they are not enjoying their home in the Palm Desert area. The Babs Fisher Valor Award is poignant in the fact that Chuck and Babs Fisher were on the Board of Directors for a couple years together. Eddie Fisher and the entire Fisher family are honored to award Chuck and Karen Lytle the Babs Fisher Valor Award for 2017. The entire Rivkin Center family thanks Chuck and Karen for everything they have done for the Rivkin Center and for giving back to our community is such a significant and generous manner.

2017 Courage for Life HonoreeHeike Malakoff

We are thrilled to honor Heike Malakoff with the Courage for Life Award this year.

In December 2003, five days after turning 34, Heike was diagnosed with breast cancer. Heike was young and active, with three children under two and no family history of breast cancer. She wasn’t in any of the traditional “high-risk” categories and discovered her lump while nursing her child. Heike’s experience inspired her and she got an idea - she wanted to help educate other women about breast cancer. Heike believes knowledge is power, and that knowing your body and being your own health advocate is extremely important.

Heike started the organization Check Your Boobies in 2005, putting women into action over their own health so they are more in control and less in fear of cancer. Heike created an education model that was frank, FUN, and fearless. Check Your Boobies evolved into CanCan Health, which merged with the Rivkin Center in 2016 to become the educational program of the Rivkin Center. CanCan educates women about ovarian and breast cancer: breast cancer is the most common, ovarian cancer is the most deadly, and the two are often genetically linked. CanCan continues to expand to more communities, corporations, and campuses, and educates thousands of women each year. Heike is currently the Director of Education and Marketing for the Rivkin Center and embodies the mission of the Rivkin Center: to save women’s lives and reduce their suffering through improved treatment, early detection, and prevention. Heike lives with her husband Ed and their three children Maia, Max, and Elias on Mercer Island.

B ab s Fi sh er

When Babs Fisher was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in October 2000, her family and friends rallied around her. Together they focused their energy on raising money and awareness for ovarian cancer. In 2002 they started the Fisher Family Golf Invitational to benefit the Rivkin Center.

Babs was known for her commitment and service to our community. Her smile instantly lit up a room and her loving spirit touched so many within our community. When she lost her courageous fight in 2004, Babs’ family knew that they needed to do more to find a cure for ovarian cancer. They did not want other families to go through the pain and suffering that they had experienced. With the outpouring of generosity and amazing participation from the community, and in collaboration with the White family, the Fishers created The Fisher Family & Friends Auction in 2008. We are so grateful to the Fisher family because tonight’s event has become the keystone fundraiser for the Rivkin Center.

In 2012, in continued recognition of the Fisher family’s long-standing commitment, the Rivkin Center established the Babs Fisher Valor Award. This award recognizes those who provide outstanding leadership in increasing awareness of ovarian cancer, inspiring philanthropic advocacy and helping to further the mission of the Rivkin Center. It is a fitting tribute to Babs, and to the legacy of the Fisher family advanced by Eric, Rod, Craig, and Eddie Fisher and espoused by their family, friends and the community.

L or i Wh ite & Mary Ellen BissellMary Ellen Bissell raised her nine children as a single mother while working seven days a week and returning to college to earn her education degree. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer during the time that her daughter-in-law, Lori White, was battling the same disease. A lifelong educator, Mary Ellen was extremely proud of all her children. Together, they shared this battle and the challenges of fighting this insidious disease. After a short 18 months, Mary Ellen passed away in February of 2003.

Lori White battled ovarian cancer for seven and a half years. She was a long-term patient of Dr. Saul Rivkin and truly admired him for his dedication to his patients and their families. Lori endured 22 surgeries and double-digit chemotherapy treatments during her battle. She never gave in to the pains of cancer and she lived her life as fully as possible with all of the challenges that came with the disease. Lori passed away in May 2003, just three months after her mother-in-law, Mary Ellen. As a nurse, she cared for children and adults alike, but clearly shined as a pediatric charge nurse.

Lori and Mary Ellen were the impetus behind establishing the LorLor & Mom Courage 4 Life Golf Tournament in 2002, which benefitted the Rivkin Center. In 2008, Lori’s husband, Joe White, and their son, Tyler, joined forces with the Fisher family to create the Fisher Family & Friends Auction, invaluably growing the Rivkin Center’s cornerstone annual fundraising event to new heights.

The Rivkin Center’s Courage for Life Award honors The White Family’s profound commitment, and the courageous battle that they endured with ovarian cancer. The award recognizes ovarian cancer survivors who demonstrate a profound passion for life, a generosity toward others and an important contribution to the efforts of the Rivkin Center.

12CHIHULY GLASS PIECE "DAKOTA MACCHIA"Dale Chihuly's Macchia series is renowned for its innovative use of color and extravagant design. Macchia, from the Italian word for "spotted," have brilliant and wildly contrasting color palettes, inside and out, that are separated by a layer of white glass "clouds" to maintain the vibrancy of the colors. Chihuly recalls, "When we unloaded the ovens in the morning, there was a rush of seeing something I had never seen before. Like much of my work, the series inspired itself. The unbelievable combinations of color that became the driving force."The 2008 Chihuly Workshop Studio Edition, Dakota Macchia, bursts in a kaleidoscope of color. To Babs —

Thank you, my friend, for sharing your love, and letting me share mine . . . .

Always, Carole

All of the arts of living, it seems,Are merged in the spectrum of love.Friendship, awareness, happiness - allFit together like a hand in a glove.

Love is the base and the top of the pyramidOf our existence, it’s true.It enlarges the vision and expands the heart; It can be found in everything we do.

Love is the power that lifts us to heights. It’s a dynamic motivation. It’s the creative fire, keeping our torches aflame. For progress, it’s an inspiration.

Love penetrates the mysteries of life. It’s the dove of peace, to be sure.It is tenderness, compassion, forgiveness and tolerance. It is in all our motives pure.

Love is the supreme good; and it’s down to earth,Yet it reaches the highest star. It’s the depth of humility and the highest high. It’s everything you are.

Love is the perfect antidote to fear,Washing away the negative feelings. The art of love is God at workThrough you in all your dealings.
