RIVERVIEW CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society
chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.
Scholarship: Sophomore (after completion of 3 high school semesters), junior, and senior students who have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, and dependable persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

the decision of the Faculty Council concerning my acceptance or non-acceptance into National Honor Society, and I
understand that my application will become the property of National Honor Society. Under no circumstances will it be
available for review by me or my parents after I have submitted it for evaluation. I also agree to fulfill all National Honor
Society obligations if accepted. I understand that my acceptance and retention in National Honor Society is based on my

As the parent or legal guardian of a National Honor Society candidate, I understand the procedure for acceptance into this
very prestigious organization. I agree to accept the decision of the Faculty Council concerning my child’s acceptance or

submitted it for evaluation. I realize that my child’s grade point average is not the only determining factor for induction
into National Honor Society and that he/she may be removed from the organization, after due process, of it is determined
that he/she is not fulfilling his/her obligation to the society.

Look over Sections I.-VIII. to become familiar with the various categories. Then list all activities in which you
have participated during high school in the appropriate section. Include clubs, teams, musical groups, etc., and
major accomplishments or awards in each. Include activities you know you will participate in during this school
year. For example, if you know you will participate in track, but the season hasn’t begun, please include it. If you
participated in any service activity within the school activity, list that along with the number of hours you
performed the service. Generally speaking, service activities are those which are done for or on behalf of others
(not including immediate family members) for which no compensation (monetary or other) has been given. You
must also obtain the signature of the adult who can verify your participation in each activity.

X. Essay/Personal Statement:
The objectives of the National Honor Society are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to
render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in all students at
Riverview High School. Membership in this society is a great honor, not a right. This organization looks upon
education as a product measured by four standards: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
Your personal statement is a very important part of the application process in that it helps the faculty council
become acquainted with you in ways different from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It also
enables you to demonstrate your ability to organize thoughts and express yourself. In your own words, explain in
your essay the qualifications you have that exemplify the ideals of the National Honor Society.
Type your essay on a new page. Use 12-point Times New Roman font.
XI. Letters (3) of Recommendation in regards to Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character: Please
ask recommender to address the four pillars in their letters. We want to see how others view your character.
Recommenders should be adults with whom you have worked closely with in either an educational environment,
in acts of volunteerism, or in a professional atmosphere. These need to be typed, SIGNED and attached to your
application.
Bylaws of the Riverview High School Chapter of National Honor Society ARTICLE I – MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. Membership in the Riverview High School Chapter of National Honor Society is an honor and privilege bestowed upon a student. It is not
a right. Final selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on an outstanding application, scholarship, character, leadership, and
service. Once selected, members have a responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
Section 2. The Faculty Council shall reserve the right to award honorary membership to school officials, principals, teachers, NHS advisers, or adults in
recognition of outstanding service rendered to the school in keeping with the purpose of the National Honor Society.
Section 3. Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony held in the spring of each year.
Section 4. Seniors who are members in good standing are eligible to apply to be nominated by their chapter to compete in the National Honor Society
Scholarship Program. The Faculty Adviser and Faculty Council shall choose the two nominees from Riverview High School who shall compete nationally
for this scholarship. These two students shall be chosen based on the following criteria; scholarship, leadership, service to National Honor Society
and other organizations, and character.
ARTICLE II - SELECTION OF MEMBERS
Section l. To be eligible for membership, the candidate must be a member of the sophomore or junior class. Candidates must have been in attendance at
Riverview High School the equivalent of at least one complete academic semester. Juniors planning to graduate at the end of their junior year are not
eligible to apply.
Section 2. Candidates must have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of at least 3.500. Candidates shall then be evaluated on the basis of their
completed applications, service, leadership, and character. No personal interviews will be conducted.
Section 3. The criteria of service are defined in terms of contribution to the school, classmates, and the community. The student who serves must have shown
active and consistent participation in school activities as well as outside volunteer activities. Applicants must submit written proof of this service (letter on
official letterhead from the organization served, complete with signature of supervisor and address and phone number where he or she may be reached) at the
time of application and following each academic quarter after selection for membership.
Section 4. The leadership criterion is considered highly important for membership selection. Students demonstrate this leadership by successfully holding
offices or positions of responsibility in the school and the community. A leader exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals. A leader is a
positive role model in the classroom.
Section 5. The student of character demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, responsibility, fairness, courtesy, tolerance, and cooperation. He does not
cheat and shows unwillingness to profit from the mistakes of others. He complies with school regulations. The student of character is a positive role model
both in school and in the community.
Section 6. For consideration for membership, applicants shall provide the following to the Chapter Adviser within the specified application period: signed,
notarized bylaws, pre-information and final information packets completed in blue or black ink only and including proof of all activities and
community/school service; a professional cover letter attached to the front of the application packet; all required signatures and dates. Incomplete application
packets will not be considered. All application materials become the property of National Honor Society and will not be returned to or reviewed by applicants
or their parents.
Section 7. The Riverview High School faculty and staff will review a list of students eligible to be considered for membership and will be asked to comment
on the character of these students. At no time will an applicant or his parent be allowed to review these comments. These responses will be part of the
recommendations used by the Faculty Council. The final selections are made only by the five members of the Faculty Council.
Section 8. After the selection meeting by the Faculty Council, the Chapter Adviser will inform each student of the decision of the Faculty Council.
Sophomores who are not selected will be encouraged to seek selection again the following year. The decision of the Faculty Council is final. Appeals are not
considered following the member selection process.
ARTICLE III– DISMISSAL
Section 1. Members who fall below the required cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.500 shall be warned in writing by the Chapter Adviser and given
one academic quarter (9 weeks) to raise the GPA to 3.500. If the student’s GPA has not recovered to at least 3.500 cumulative unweighted GPA
within that probationary period, he/she will be dismissed from National Honor Society. There is no appeal for students removed from National
Honor Society for failing to maintain the required 3.500 minimum GPA.
Section 2. Members are required to attend ALL scheduled monthly meetings. Failure to attend the mandatory monthly meetings will result in
dismissal from National Honor Society. Students missing a second monthly meeting will receive a written warning, placing them on probation with
National Honor Society. Any student who misses a third monthly meeting will be dismissed from National Honor Society.
Section 3. All infractions of school rules will be referred to the Chapter Adviser by the referring teacher and/or Vice-Principal. The NHS Chapter
Adviser shall conference with the referring teacher and offending member concerning the infraction and issue either a written warning or a dismissal
letter to the student, based on the severity of the infraction. After a second infraction, the student will be automatically dismissed from National
Honor Society.
Section 4. Serious violations of school rules or civil laws (cheating, fighting, willful disobedience, drug or alcohol abuse, stealing, etc, even in the
case of a first offense) and/or public misconduct that brings shame to the reputation of the Chapter will be immediately investigated by the Chapter
Adviser. If the Chapter Adviser decides that the facts warrant probation or dismissal, the member will be notified in writing.
Clause 1. Cheating is defined as copying the work of others, using unauthorized notes during a test, giving and receiving answers on an assignment, essay,
quiz, or test, plagiarism, selling answers to a test/exam, making multiple copies of reports/answers, or sending answers through an electronic medium.
Cheating will not be tolerated by National Honor Society. Should a member be found guilty of cheating, he/she will be removed immediately from
membership in National Honor Society. All NHS members will sign a special honor code that outlines specific obligations involving cheating.
Clause 2. Plagiarism is the attempt to pass off another’s work as one’s own. An incident of plagiarism should be regarded as serious, as one of the highest
academic crimes. An incident of plagiarism shall be dealt with in the same manner as cheating. Members can avoid plagiarism by always citing sources of
information on all school assignments.
Section 5. Serious disruptive behavior during member meetings will be grounds for immediate dismissal from National Honor Society at the discretion of the
Chapter Adviser.
Section 6. A member who has been dismissed from National Honor Society for any reason other than the GPA requirement may appeal the decision to the
Faculty Council. This appeal must be submitted in writing within five school days of the dismissal.
Section 7. A member who has received a written dismissal letter following an appeal to the Faculty Council may appeal the decision to the principal. This

National Honor Society Social Media Contract
2019-2020
In the past, inappropriate use of social media by Riverview High School students participating in both
athletic, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities has resulted in the suspension from practices, games, teams,
clubs and events. In an effort to foster good moral character and to deter the need to enforce such discipline,
Riverview High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society will enforce the following guidelines as best
practices for the use of social media by any of the members of our organization. For the purposes of these
guidelines, social media means any form of electronic communication through which users create online
communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content including, by way of
illustration and not limitation, social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat,
Tumblr, iMessage, GroupMe, and Remind in addition to any other social media like sites.
Riverview High School respects the right of its students to use social media. However, it is important
that all of our students, specifically those directly representing our school, like NHS, understand the need to
exercise care in setting appropriate boundaries between their personal and public online behavior and to
understand that what may seem private in the digital world can often become public, even without the consent
or knowledge of the other person. National Honor Society students who use social media must remember that
any information posted reflects on the entire Riverview High School community and, as such, is subject to the
same behavioral standards set forth in the student hand-book. Please remember, that NHS is supposed to
represent the best of the best in all factors life, and we just want to make sure that our best is always what is
being presented.
BEST PRACTICES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA USE:
The guidelines are intended to provide a framework for Riverview High School National Honor Society
students to conduct themselves safely and responsibly in an online environment. As Riverview High School
students you should:
1. Be Aware that Privacy Settings are NOT foolproof: Students are highly encouraged to use privacy
settings on social media sites. However, students should be aware that privacy settings are not fool-
proof. Although social media sites provide their users with privacy improvement updates, the changes
occur frequently and can get complicated. Even if you diligently monitor your privacy settings, it’s best
to assume that anything you post may potentially be seen by your school, your parents, and strangers.
And don’t forget about those lovely things called screen-shots!
2. Avoid Posting Confidential Information: Be aware of the kind of information you are posting on
social media sites. Posting information such as your date of birth, address, phone number, class
schedule, social security number, bank account number, etc. is NOT recommended. Once such
information is posted, it become the property of the social media site.
3. Avoid Unprofessional Public Profiles: Any information you post on social media sites is considered
public information and may be viewed by members of the public. Be mindful of the image you create
for yourself online. Potential, current and future employers, as well as college admission
officers/recruiters may access the information you put on social media sites.
4. Avoid Posting Illegal Activities: Photos posted via social media become the property of the social
media site. You may delete the photo from your profile but the photo remains on the social media site’s
server. Internet search engines such as Google or Yahoo may still find that image long after you have
deleted it from your profile. In addition, even if your profile is set to private, a friend can always
download and save incriminating photos that third parties, such as the authorities, can use against you in
the future. Incriminating photos would include: photos or statements depicting violence; hazing;
bullying; sexual harassment; vandalism; stalking underage drinking; selling, possessing or using
controlled substances including marijuana; or any other inappropriate behaviors.
5. Avoid Bullying/Threats of Violence: While Riverview High School students have the right to free
speech, that right is NOT unlimited. Bullying is a serious problem and is not limited to student-to-
student interactions. Vicious treatment and hateful words often lead to violence, suicide, depression,
and discrimination. Riverview High School should avoid the following:
a. Derogatory language or remarks about teammates, coaches, students, teachers, faculty,
administrators, or representative of other schools
b. Demeaning statements about and/or threats to any third party
c. Creating serious danger to the safety of another person or making a credible threat of
serious physical or emotional injury to another person.
*Riverview High School students should be award that if their conduct is deemed inappropriate
such conduct may be subject to discipline, not only by school authorities, but also by law
enforcement.
6. Avoid Lying, Cheating, and Plagiarizing: This includes taking homework from another student,
copying work, passing your work on to another, and/or commit intellectual theft by misrepresenting
some else’s original idea as your own.
7. Stay clear of Profane or inappropriate language: slurs, cursing, bigotry, derogatory language of any
kind, or anything that does not represent RVHS well, will be subject to disciplinary action.
Again, all information posted on social media sites is considered public information. It may be viewed by
any third parties and used against you. It is best to assume that anything you post, may be seen by your
school, your parents, and your peers.
All NHS members subject to disciplinary actions if the above rules are broken and immediate removal from
Riverview High School National Honor Society.
Student and Parent Social Media and Behavior Contract
Both my parents and I have read the National Honor Society Bylaws, the application, and the social
media contract, and understand that if my behavior or academics fall below the expectations
provided, including my yearly evaluation, I will be removed from NHS Riverview Charter, and all
privileges that come with being an NHS member will be revoked.
