From the Principals
13 November 2018
We were lucky enough to hear our talented SIMs musicians play for us at the senior
assembly on Friday morning. They entertained the audience with a number of tunes and
played confidently and enthusiastically. I thank their music teacher for the hard work in
preparing them. Well done to the students!
The majority of the assembly was dedicated to Remembrance Day and the ceremony
related to remembering and honouring those Australians who have fallen and served in
conflicts around the world, whilst serving for our nation. The Year 5 and 6 students from
Room 5 led the ceremony, explaining the program and the symbols involved, whilst telling
the story through their own poems and published poetry. Thank you so much to the
students for leading us through the moving ceremony and to Mrs Hooper for all her work.
Congratulations to the students on a fine effort in leading this very important event. Lest We
Forget.
Messy Mud Week is upon us again this year and classes have already begun enjoying the
fun and games associated with this event. Thankfully the weather has been kind thus far
and the students have been enjoying themselves. Please remember to have the students
bring a change of clothes so they can get really “down and dirty” in the mud.
Our future leaders will be on show this week with the Year 5 student candidates for student
leader positions speaking to their peers. These speeches provide an opportunity for the
students to speak publicly, explaining why they wish to be a Student Leader in 2019 and
getting some experience in public speaking. Once the candidates’ speeches are completed,
their peers will have the chance to vote, with the elections overseen by the WA electoral
commission, thereby providing another real link to the HASS curriculum studies by the
students, as seen in their excursion to the Electoral Centre last term. I wish all of them the
very best. Regardless of the result, they have all displayed their commitment through
nominating and taking part in the process. Thank you to Mrs Stanbridge for all her hard
work preparing and supporting the students.

On Friday November 23, there will be a special Japanese Culture Day for all students in Years 1 to 6. Regular classes have been cancelled and students will be allocated new groups for the day. There will be students from each class making up the new groups, with older students helping and looking after the younger students during the day. There will be two visitors helping with some special Japanese activities, such as origami, calligraphy, taiko drumming, dancing, costume dress-ups, games, crafts, quizzes and challenges. There is no cost for the day's activities, however, students may wish to pre-order a special Obentou lunchbox from the canteen or purchase a kakigoori (shaved ice dessert) for $1.50. The P & C committee are seeking volunteers to help with the kakigoori stall between 10.00 and 11.00am and / or between 11.50am and 1.00pm. Please contact them if you are available to help serve these desserts. Terrena Hall LOTE Specialist
Riverton Primary Campus is endeavouring to make our environment as autonomous as possible for our non-verbal students and for those students using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. A lot of the students in the centre have very good receptive language (can understand what is being said) but have poor expressive language (communicate their needs and wants). Around the Campus you may have noticed that we have placed wooden poles, these are our Communication Poles. These poles will be a place for our students to place their AAC devices, and also to access relevant words/ actions that they can access to express their needs and wants in the playground. We are in the process of painting them in bright colours and will talk to the students at assembly on Friday explaining to them the purpose of the ‘Communication Poles’. The students at Riverton are an exceptional bunch of students and their inclusive nature comes from acceptance and tolerance of others. We are very proud of the way our students accept and socialize with the students from the Education Support Centre.
The Garden Club has been super busy.
Have you seen the new garden at the
front of the school? It is amazing! We
still have one more member to set up
home in the garden.

Dear Families
Our Canteen is 60 years old and needs a major refurbishment in the next 18 months. This will
cost the school approximately $75,000 and ensure it keeps up with modern regulations. There
are a number of facts the Board knows about the canteen;
1. Some families are passionate advocates for our canteen while others may not care
too much.
2. It provides a great service and unites the school community in a unique way.
3. Our school is lucky to have a canteen open 5 days a week. Many schools no longer
have canteens at all.
4. Once a school loses a canteen it is unlikely it will return.
Could you please help the School Board make the best decision for the school community now
and into the future by completing the following survey;
Canteen Survey 2018
It will only take a few minutes and provide us with the necessary community insight.
Thank you for your time.
